Listen, we booked this room for our Harry Styles concert, and we were mislead by the photos online and the short distance from Madison Square Garden. While it seems to be like a convenient and affordable New York City Hotel, the actual problems with the room are not worth the savings. Our first room was covered in blood stains, full of mold and mildew, and the bathrooms were simply repulsive. The lamp was scratched and broken, and there was makeup and stains all over the beds. Our second room that we switched into -since the first room was disgusting- had again bloodstains all over the floor and outlets that either did not work, or nearly burned (our chargers were burning hot after only 3 minutes of being plugging in). The lights did not all work, and turned on randomly throughout our night at the hotel. In the beginning of the night, the outlet for the air conditioning did not work, and the room was simply boiling. Randomly, the outlet began working again and the AC could not be turned down to less than freezing. The kitchen light also randomly turned on and off on its own. The lobby, which is very clean and beautiful, is entirely misleading. There was so many other small problems, but I will spare who ever might read this by not mentioning them. Staff was quite kind.

Had a very pleasant stay at the Stewart last week. The staff from the front desk and lobby to the house keepers were all excellent. I stayed in a one bedroom suite and it was very spacious. The bathroom was well laid out and homey. The furniture was well kept, though clearly worn. The bed was very comfortable and clean. The space overall could use a refresh, new wallpaper and carpet. But was in good condition for its age. The only thing that was dirty was the curtain things at the top of the windows. They just need to get pulled down and washed. Overall it was a good stay and I would go back next time I’m in the area

I was hesitant to book a room at this hotel after reading a bunch of bad reviews, but I was going to a concert at Madison Square Garden and decided last minute to stay overnight. The room rates were very good on the website, and when I called to make a reservation, the person on the phone was very friendly. He got me an even better price than what I was seeing online. Check in was easy. The room was upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite and it was way more than what I needed. The room was huge. The furniture is definitely worn, and could use an update, but the bed was clean and comfortable, and so was the bathroom. There is self parking for $45 and valet for $70. It's a 2 minute walk to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden etc. Very good bang for your buck, as long as you're not expecting it to be a palace. People complaining about the noise - it's Manhattan, so yes there are sirens and street sounds all night.

We stayed three nights, and it was not a good stay. The staff was generally quite friendly, and the location was perfect for us, but this hotel has issues. They are understaffed, and I understand that this is a widespread problem. But it is an inconvenience to wait for a half-hour to check in. Maybe this is typical in Manhattan, so I'll let that go. When we got to our room, we found that it was not very clean, the bathroom sink had a slow drain, and several electrical outlets, lights, and the refrigerator did not work. We reported it the next day. They flipped the circuit breaker and sent engineering personnel up to make sure it was OK. Lights and outlets were restored, but the refrigerator never got cool during our stay, and we were told by engineering that there was no replacement for it. This is unfortunate because we needed it. On our last night, the room got warm, so we turned on the window unit A/C. It made a loud, growling noise and then immediately tripped the circuit breaker again. (So I guess we found the source of the problem.) I tried to report it @ ~5:40am by dialing *90 for the front desk and 0 for off-site customer service, and no one answered either call. Considering the cost of the room, that is unacceptable. When we checked out, I told the lady at the front desk, who was very friendly, about our issues. She replied, "And they didn't give you another room!?" Exactly. She removed about $120 of "fees" from our total, which left us with about $1,000 bill for this room for three days. This is still WAY too much for the quality-of-stay we experienced. It soured an otherwise good trip to NYC. Update: Perhaps the Owner missed the first sentence of my review. Let me repeat it: "...IT WAS NOT A GOOD STAY."

Great location, not great hotel. Located right across from Madison Square Garden, the hotel looks really "fancy" when you first enter. The lobby is big, and clean, and you would expect your room to be the same... but it's not. The room reminded me of a motel room. It was big and fit us all, but it was definitely dated. And the bathroom was so small, with the smallest shower I've ever used. It did have a great bar at the entrance, though. Parking is about $55 a day, and is under the hotel. But they don't keep the cars there the whole time. When we picked up our car up, it was filthy... as if it was outside the whole time. It was the cheapest hotel for what we were looking for, but I think next time we'll spend the extra money.

I have given the hotel one star for the location, which is almost opposite Penn Station and one star for the facilities that were available. A number are not, for example there is no shop beyond a few cans of Coke in a fridge. I can only give this hotel two stars for the following reasons. One arrival we were checked in by someone who was fairly unhelpful, we asked about breakfast and other guest services and they responded with a shrug. Not a great start. It is evident that the hotel has seen better days with all the communal areas and rooms being a bit tired; I can cope with shabby but not dirty. The room, whilst spacious, had stains on the carpet and the furniture and there were areas in the bathroom (under the sink) where grime had been left to accumulate. The worst was the hairs in the bath/shower. I mentioned it to a different person on the desk and was promised housekeeping would visit and give it a clean but no one came, I ended up using a pack of anti bacterial wipes to do it myself. On check out I was informed that there were no charges to my room, I had been careful not to accumulate any, but was then charged $150 to my card. I have tried to contact the hotel by email and they have (so far) failed to respond. I have noticed a number of other reviews have also mentioned unexpected charges and a lack of contact /response from the hotel to explain. My overall impression is that the hotel hasn't had any significant investment for some time either in the decor, facilities or staff. The location is very convenient but you can do better elsewhere.

I give this hotel 5 stars. The suite was spotlessly clean and that's always my biggest bug bear in hotels. We were high enough up to not have any street noise disruption . We had a one double bed room suite. Sofa was very comfortable too. Shower roasting hot water and plenty of fluffy towels. Small kitchenette with 2 ring hob and a fridge so you can save so $$$ and eat in. This hotel location is ideal for walking Manhattan. Across the road from Penn railway Station and close to subway. Staff were very courteous and any request was dealt with very speedily. For price and location it's ideal and we will stay here again when next in NY.

When you first enter the hotel you are greeted by a grand and beautiful lobby. But after check in you soon realize the hotel does the bare minimum to hold its 4 star status. The housekeeping, front desk, and all personnel in the lobby were helpful and kind, the main stars of the hotel. But upon arriving to my room 2125 (request another room immediately) I was greeted by a roach and a sauna like room. I could not turn on or off the heating system. The elevators could be heard every few minutes. We requested mechanics to come and fix the heating issue since there were no other rooms available for our needs. The mechanics did little to nothing and were condescending. The first mechanic just turned on the AC which is locked away during winter months. The AC then stopped working after an hour, resulting in a restless night. The second condescending mechanic on the following day clearly unaware of the problems in their building did everything but try to help us. Just ridiculous there were no way to crack a window or control the heating system. Furthermore the room had many places where you can see cracked painting and lack of regular maintenance. The hotel doesn’t really represent what a 4 star hotel should be. You are better off going to smaller 3 star hotels for a better overall experience.

This was our second and final stay at the Stewart. I tried to give them a second chance but the room we had was very outdated. The only good thing about this place is Penn Station across the street. Beware when booking this hotel will charge you and $80.00 per night resort fee and let me tell you it is not a resort of any kind! The room was just horrible. The carpet was dirty and old. The bathroom could barely fit one grown adult and I am slim. In the shower I kept hitting my hand as one can’t spread your arms in the 2x2 shower. There was no closet it was an armour with a door that was broken and would not slide! The outlets in the wall were completely loose, I was worried the thing might spark a fire and burn the place down. The window ac unit had a filter that was full of dust!!! And forget about early check in they will upcharge you $50.00 on top of the daily resort fee. The hallways are very dark and the carpet is 40 years old you can see the wear and tear. Again if you want a room from 1985 go to the Stewart if not go else where.

My partner and I stayed at The Stewart Hotel for a day stay via the Hotels by Day app. Check-in was seamless and we received a warm reception upon arrival. The hotel room on the other hand was less than pleasant. The carpet and couch in the room were visibly soiled. There was peeling paint in the bathroom and cracks in the ceiling. There was very noticeable dust on the lamps and the shower floor also looked like it hasn’t been cleaned in a very long time. The television also didn’t work. The hotel room was spacious but could use a deep cleaning and furniture upgrade. The nicest feature of the room was the wallpaper and space.

I stayed here with my son for his birthday. Staff and customer service was great. Reason for the 4 stars is hotel cleanliness it could be a little better. Rooms are great size. We had queen bed and sofa in our room, but I definitely wouldn't use that sofa to sleep on. (Can be dusted or vacuumed) to make it look more presentable. Other than that everything was great and yes I would stay there again.

Very busy, and perhaps overbooked as a lot of people did not get their room. We did not get the suite on our first evening because of the plumbing issue, and we stayed in alternate rooms- they were nearer street level, so incredibly noisy, and there was definitely a plumbing issue. The decor needs a wee bit of TLC!! On a positive note, it was warm, and the doormen and porters were very friendly and helpful. The higher up your room away from the street, the more the noise reduces.

Upon arrival we waited quite a bit to check in and then the front desk did not offer directions towards the room or advise the elevators need the room card for access. The exterior and lobby were beautiful but the upstairs hallways are very dark and the room itself was gross as far as I’m concerned. That’s no dig to the (apparently understaffed) staff, it needs to be deep cleaned and furniture needs to be repaired and replaced. The lights take 5-10 seconds to turn on after hitting the switch and there was a large gap even after closing the door where you could see into the hall. The AC didn’t really seem to be working and the TV does not have any channels or options to purchase anything to watch. I was also surprised for the price of the room that they don’t offer anything in the mini fridge. There are no individual shampoos/conditioners in the bathroom, they leave you one bar of soap and refill bottles of everything else which are attached to the shower wall. The towels smelled after getting wet and some were actually torn/shaggy. Water pressure and heat were good but there’s no bathroom fan just a vent in the stall and every fixture was crooked on the wall. One of the bed frames was also really crooked and you could see the yellow pillows beneath their covers in addition to the “comforter” which was so flat I thought they only provided a single sheet. Carpet needed to be badly shampooed or replaced completely and even the lampshades had stains. Overall it’s a roof over your head and there’s no bed bugs, but if you’re staying more than one night or actually want to get your moneys worth this is not the place to be. We will not be returning.

The room was dirty and not like shown in the pictures. It has cooking appliances but no cutlery, plates, cups or an sort of utensils. I asked reception for cooking crockery, plates, forks and cups. I got 1 pan and a plastic spoon. I called again and asked if we can have plates, cutlery and cups. I was given 2 paper cups. I ask a third time but gave up. We paid a resort fee and the facilities are almost non existent. It’s dull, dark and the photos have either been digitally enhanced or they have 1 nice room and the rest are dated. The noise was horrendous. It was freezing cold. Horrible place and I’ll never return. Heating broke and the engineer said it’ll fix itself. It banged and rattled all night. My family barely slept in 4 nights. Again I was told it always does it and it evens out. It clearly was air locked. Be careful if you book here. I wish I could give it less stars.

I clearly missed all the bad reviews when booking this hotel. I think I must have been so pleased with (and fooled by) all of the pictures and the proximity to Madison Square Garden that I overlooked the reviews (which is very unusual for me)! As others have noted, the pictures must be from when the hotel first opened. The rooms look NOTHING like what is pictured. The carpet and walls are filthy, the bathrooms are not clean (hair on the shower wall and in the bathroom sink to name just 2 things). The furniture (upholstered sofa and chairs) are worn and dirty, as well. Would not even sit on them. I wiped the vinyl chairs and used only those. Very hot in the room - cannot control the heat - so had to turn on both air conditioners to offset the heat. The 2 bedroom/2 bath that I booked months in advance was not available upon check in!!??!! They tried to give us a one bedroom something or other but, wound up giving us 2 rooms instead. This was not what we had wanted but, settled since it was the best available option offered. Cleary those that own and run this hotel don't seem to give a darn about all of these complaints and issues since the complaints are pretty much all the same and seemingly not addressed by management - other than what seems to be a very insincere reply to each review with apparently no action taken to address or correct and fix ANYTHING! I absolutely DO NOT recommend this hotel and I would NEVER stay in this hotel again!!

March 22 UPDATE: Just back from another stay in a one bedroom suite. The EDGE Designers had five floors blocked for their trade show so they were busy and we stayed on a different floor this time. The room was smaller than any I had previously seen (still big by NYC standards) and the bedroom was entirely interior with no windows which I got used to if I kept the door open. The tables were definitely scuffed and had seen better days, but it was all clean and in working order and they replaced several pieces from the room next door to us while we were there so they are refreshing rooms as needed. I still stand by this being a fabulous place to stay - without a doubt the best in this price point and even several above it. NOV 21 I am honestly shocked at the number of negative reviews for such a clearly fantastic gem. I’ve stayed in a LOT of hotels in NYC and worked professionally here in the industry in the past and have found the Stewart to be my new favorite for so many reasons. I’ve stayed in their one bedroom suites on three week-long trips now and they are enormous - bigger than many one bedroom apartments in the city for sure. They’ve all been quite clean, well stocked and maintained with housekeeping checking in to see that we were all set. The location is really central to everything and safe and secure. They kept lots of the old brick, moldings and the heavy real wood doors with what seems to be the original mirrors too! Kitchens are the only all new parts of the rooms I have stayed in which I appreciate. Again, I don’t know what sort of expectations many of these reviewers have had in their minds of NY &/or this hotel - but they sound unrealistic and like they’ll always find something to complain about (in the midst of a pandemic no less)!

Stayed here from 1/30/22 to 2/5/22. The room was pretty good a little small but definitely ain’t complaining about it. Everything was great. Maybe my only complaint would be the fact that you can’t control the heater and sometimes it would get too hot but other than that had a good stay.

We enjoyed our stay. The location at this hotel is perfect, walking distance to most tourist attractions and pen station. The women who cleaned out hotel is super nice. She would always make sure we were taken care of. And she gave me some bags for dirty laundry when I asked. I accidentally left my phone in our room after we checked out and a man was super nice and quick to take me back up to my room to find it. Some of the wall paper in my rooms bathroom was slightly pealing but other than that it was a nice place.

Room was decent and would have been 3 stars but they charged us an extra $100 fee of some kind 2 days after we checked out, did not provide a receipt of any kind and won’t answer the phone or the multiple emails we’ve sent. It even appears we are now blocked from sending them emails. Do not book with this hotel until you don’t care about hidden unexplained fees and poor customer service

If I could leave ZERO stars I would. We made our reservation in advance to then show up to the hotel and the lady at the desk said the hotel was full and that there was one room left that ‘we probably wouldn’t like because of multiple complaints’. She wouldn’t tell us exactly what was wrong with the room but told us to check it out for ourselves. We got to the room and words can’t even describe how disgusting it was. Stains on the walls and carpet, everything was very gross and carpet was also all ripped up. The smell was also horrendous. We then told them we wouldn’t stay there and that if they knew the issue was there then that room shouldn’t even be allowed to be occupied. The manager completely ignored our concern and even rolled his eyes. DISGUSTINGLY disappointing. They should be ashamed in all of their staffing for knowing and allowing this kind of disgust. We then had to find a last minute hotel. Very inconvenient that they didn’t even call in advance to notify us.

We had a great stay. The location of this hotel is perfect, walking distance to most tourist attractions and penn station/ subway. The women who cleaned our room was brilliant .She would always make sure we were taken care of and kept our room clean. Whilst the hotel furnishings where dated, the room was clean and everything worked having the kitchen in our room was brilliant. The hotel clearly has a great history and a typical NYC hotel. All the staff where so helpful and sorted our transport back to the airport with no fuss. Thank You

I gave this hotel five stars for the price you pay and what you get. I mean, it was a two bedroom two bathroom apartment with a complete kitchenette really. The beds were nice and firm and everything worked fine. It was clean. The location was fantastic and the housekeeping staff were really nice. Unfortunately there was a fire above us (this was 2 years ago) and our apartment was completely drenched. They gave us a smaller temporary room. I hope they truly renovate this gem.

it’s in a nice location, near times square and next to penn station. we were a group of 6, and they had 2 proper double beds but there was a futon and it was really uncomfortable. when we asked if we could change that in anyway, an employee gave us two single beds we had to make. for the rest, everything was good. the room was clean, peaceful and quiet. good overall.

Do not stay here if you would like your bond back! I paid a $300USD hold on my credit card. That card was stolen in NYC unfortunately so I had to cancel it. I advised this on check out and was promised it would be refunded onto a new card provided. This NEVER happened. Countless emails and phone calls never returned. I have been trying for months to have this money returned with zero success.

As native New Yorkers, we stayed at the hotel during our transition between our rental apartment and one we were purchasing. The hotel staff was incredibly accommodating and kind to us. Andrew offered exceptional service as a Manager as did Edward and their team including Jenny, and Anthony. I cannot tell you how wonderful they all are. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and really made our stay during this major transition comfortable. If you are from out of town staying here, the location is so central making everything walk-able that you would want to see. Having a small business, we truly valued more than anything the wonderful customer service this fab team gave us. We recommend this hotel and want to say a big thank you to the staff here and highly recommended it as a place to stay convenient and central to all you would want in New York. --Lauren + Lance

SCAM -In 35 years of travelling I have never been left with such a tainted experience. Setting aside building works outside all night the hotel after my departure charged my credit card $40.17 WITHOUT my approval - claiming it is a mandatory facilities fee. Having spoken to 3 members of staff including the manager Edward I was told they cannot do anything. So beware when you see a price of $99 per night plus taxes - they charge you another $40.17 per night. No where was this called out clearly or explained at check in. So please beware- I will be reporting to my credit card company. Alan G

This hotel was really great, had lots of character and was at an unbeatable location. Door staff was extremely caring and kind, especially the doormen/bellhops. They helped us carry our luggage up and down the stairs since the escalator was down, and helped us with bag storage/bag claim. Front desk was charismatic and kind, but did fail to tell us about the total for the room hold charge (not a big deal). The lobby was outstanding, a modern green art couch greets you along with a large glass tube chandelier. The elevators are fixed in old world charm, with what I assume are original plates and sculpture on them. Nice place to hang out. They also have free short term locked baggage claim. We got a studio room, which was really lovely and spacious. We had a small view of street which was cool too. This area is very busy all the time, to complain about noise would be redundant, it's expected of the location. This location is a few blocks from Penn and is within a 10 minute walk to Time Square. Lots of 24/7 delis, lots of pubs and cocktail bars, lots of good eats. It's central Manhattan baby. Overall it was a good experience! I would definitely stay here again and I would definitely recommend it to people who are staying in the city for the first time if its in your budget, since it's so accessible to Penn and the Time Square area. It was the most affordable option for a "oops we missed our train and we need a last minute room"!

The start of my stay was not the best, my room was three hours late. I did not get a key until around 7 pm. The front guest agent was very nice Alexis and professionally handled the delay but it was still a delay that affected the rest of my evening. I was not notified when my room was ready (it had been ready for an hour). The room overall was dingy and worn out, nothing like the pictures on the website. The room was very obviously lived in and I was taken aback considering the reviews I read were mostly positive. I really only stayed here for the two bathrooms suites- so I guess that's what I needed. Also, the bathroom sink did not drain and the shower leaked over the entire floor (pretty gross). I informed the front desk they sent someone up but it still did not drain properly the rest of the stay. The bright side all the staff I interacted with was very nice and helpful. But overall, the room needs better upkeep or worn items, furniture and wall paper.

I've stayed here several times over the years. The location is fabulous - centrally located, and across the street from Penn Station. The rooms have gotten a bit worn and could use a spruce up. I realize the pandemic has been tough on tourism, so I can see it might not have been time for room upgrades, but out suite could have used a good deep clean as well. Staff is friendly and helpful. If I hadn't gotten an amazing deal on the room, I'd have definitely complained. It was fine, from r the reduced price I paid, but definitely not worth full rate.

We got this hotel for a great price and it's in a wonderful location next to Penn station NJ train and the subway which was perfect for us. The lobby area was beautiful, the staff was very polite and helpful, and the rooms were very charming and clean. You can tell the building is older but I see this as a feature, not a negative as it gives it a lot of charm. I highly recommend a stay here!

Nice clean room. Check-in and check-out process was very slow. Fortunately we were able to check-in our luggage to go out and have lunch ( our room wasn't ready) and at check-out, we were also able to leave our luggage to have lunch before leaving to the airport. The concierge was kind enough to have an SUV there ready to take us to the airport. Overall, great stay.

We booked two bedroom suite with total of three beds. The photos were amazing. But when we checked in the suite was as good as old apartment with torn carpets, bad furniture. The suite only came with two beds. They said that the property does not have any suite with three beds. After showing them the photos and the confirmation of my booking they agreed that it is false advertising. Would give them zero stars if i could.

Horrific experience there, absolutely old and dirty room, including hair and yellow stains on the bedsheets and stains on the carpet, holes in the furniture. When asking for a different room at reception I was told there was no other room available. This can happen, so I asked if they can please come clean at the very least my bed so I can sleep, it took 45mins for an old man to show up to tell me I should re-make my bed myself and shoved a ‘clean’ sheet in my hands. Upon unfolding the sheet, there was more stains which was the final straw for me. When demanding a refund and immediate checkout, two people also started physically fighting in the lobby and security had to intervene. As a single female traveler, that made me feel extra unsafe. I am really not a difficult customer to please (stayed in many hotels and hostels across the globe and I don’t require a five star experience) as long as my room is clean, but this is the most horrific hotel I have been to. Decided to leave at 2am and cancel my stay immediately to find another hotel because I did not want to stay. The only positive is that it seemed like the girl at reception was trying her best to help multiple unsatisfied customers best she could. The man at the front desk of my new hotel around the corner said they regularly get horrified customers coming from the Stewart hotel at all hours of the night so he wasn’t surprised. Please do yourself a favor and never stay in this establishment, even if it saves you a couple of bucks.

We came for a concert at the Garden, and decided to stay at The Stewart because of the close proximity and the larger room size (family with 2 teenagers). We were very satisfied! The beds were extremely comfortable and the room was very clean. I was a bit hesitant to book this hotel at first because of some negative reviews. I am so happy I did not go by the reviews - our stay was fabulous! The only negative thing I can say is the carpet needs to be replaced in some areas. It wasn't dirty - just a little worn. It is a beautiful old building and the charm made up for the carpets. If you are traveling with a family or even a group of friends, this is a great place to stay. The suites offer much more room than you can imagine in a NYC hotel, and having a kitchenette was a bonus! When we come back again, The Stewart is where we will be staying.

Truly terrible place to stay. Stained carpets; the rooms are worn and furniture beaten up; did not feel clean and the hallways are poorly lit and, frankly, creepy at night. Don't be fooled by the impressive lobby. I booked this spot bc it was walkable to penn station and is a unionized hotel, but never again! If the area hadn't been booked solid nearby, I definitely would have checked out early.
