Amazing pastries with large selection, good coffee, old school laid back ambience, low prices(approx $5 per pastry)and ample seating. A great place to either meet up with someone or sit and read/write. Quite popular and thus there is usually a 5-10 min wait at peak coffee times. Accept both cash and debit/credit. They don't display prices though. We had the lemon pie, saccertorte and Hungarian coffee. The lemon pie was phenomenal with a great lemon flavor and smooth texture and delightful shaved coconut base which tasted amazing. The saccertorte had a chocolate shell with raspberry jam that paired well with a nice interior. The Hungarian coffee was quite good and was not really bitter and came with a whipped cream topping.

A really fun and iconic shop near Columbia serving lots of traditional and delicious pastries! The inside is usually always busy but I’ve always been able to grab a seat despite the business. Don’t be turned off if there’s a long line, it always moves pretty fast

This place is seriously overrated. I was so excited, instead I was honestly shocked😳 It’s simply DIRTY and the pastries are old/poor quality!😵‍💫 Don’t believe me? Go and see yourself! Although I wouldn’t recommend this place to a friend! There is nothing authentic Hungarian being baked there. I bought several pastries and they were awful. Don’t be fooled by the appearance. The poppy seed strudel was just hard I couldn’t even cut I with a knife. The Isler (Ishler) supposed to be filled with jelly, however, there it’s filled with at least an inch cheap chocolate creme. The other cake with apricot jelly? (I don’t even know what it was cause the lady at the register couldn’t even explain) tasted simply odd! Also bought cookies and the almond horn to go, it was old🥴 also, no descriptions or prices at the pastries. Why?! The only menu on the wall which leaves you guessing what is what looks like it’s 100 years old and should be updated with prices. To top it off: I grabbed two glasses at the water station, both of them were completely dirty with lipstick from previous customers, first I thought I grabbed mistakenly the used ones but nope, those were the “clean” ones🤢 (I should have taken a picture but I simply left disgusted) Won’t be back!

FANTASTIC old school pastry shop, felt in Europe, they have outdoor seating. There is a line sometimes to the corner, it goes fast and well worth it! A very large selection of pastries which are constantly moving. I wanted to try ALL of them :) all appetizing. Tried the linzer tart and strudel - SPOT ON one of the most tasty, freshly baked, made to perfection pastries, paired with the latte. Very nice ambiance, pleasant staff, good prices and delicious old fashion pastries.

Smells heavenly in here! It’s warm, cozy, everything I’ve tried in this shop has been incredible. I usually go here in the morning with my boyfriend to do crossword puzzles with lattes and some lovely pastries. It sure gets busy so don’t be afraid to just grab a seat next to someone! Highly recommend the cheese pastries and croissants, have yet to try their cakes!

The by the pound cookies are what I recommend, grab to go and bring to the park! I think it's not worth a wait if the line is out the door, but when I'm there and the line is contained inside I always grab to go Add on: maple cookies are amazing! They are in the by the pound section if they have them. Delightfully maple tasting and not too sweet! Unique and delicious!

When we walked past this pastry shop, we couldn’t believe how many people were lined up outside. We decided to give it a try, although we generally don’t have a sweet tooth. They offer a wide range of pastries, which makes it harder to decide what to eat. The staff is super nice and patient, and they helped us pick a few pastries. The flavor was interesting and way too sweet for our taste.

The place is packed, and it’s understandable ! The staff is SUPER nice even during rush hours, their coffees are killers, so are their pastries. They don’t have signs to tell you what the pastries are, but they will gladly talk you through everything if you ask, even during a rush :) one last important thing, which is rare in New York and that I love : they don’t put loud music in. So if you are looking for a calm, respectful place to read or just be, go there !

Yum! I was fortunate to have an appointment nearby yesterday, I missed the work crowd and line. It ALWAYS has a long line on weekends. Alas, no wait and no rush, just lucky. I wanted everything but settled on an eclair, flourless raspberry and the best tiramisu I have ever had! Just having come back from a vacation in Italy, says a lot!

Since none of this information appears to be available online: Prices are not written anywhere neither online (somewhat common, still annoying though) *nor in the store* (uncommon for a bakery-café & certainly annoying). Everything was about 4-5$ (for individual pastries) at the time of this review February 2024. Which is within typical current nyc pricing for specialty bakeries so you’re not “getting a deal” here but I do think you’re getting a more special product so there’s value in that. Not a good enough price to keep me coming back regularly personally. All the strudel slices are 5$. All the hamentash cookies are 4$. They also serve baklava and my guess would be that they’re 5$/portion. The spinach cheese pastry is only made in the morning and runs out by about 12pm and costs 6$ I got the poppy strudel because poppy pastries are hard to find in nyc and I’m keen to come up with an inventory of the “best poppy pastries” in nyc. It was delicious. The poppi paste they make/use is delicious — it’s very easy and sweet and not too dense or intense or heavy. Which could also be considered a flaw depending on your taste. I appreciate both tastes. So if I were looking for an intense and pure taste of poppy I wouldn’t get this pastry. Waiting to try the poppy hamentash but my assumption would be that they use the same paste. Service was obviously excellent. The vibe or ‘cadre’ (as we say in French) is excellent. It feels like a café. This is what a café is. Neither an international chain nor a specialty coffee roaster but a « café » an actual café worthy of the name. The chairs and tables outside could have more charm however. All in all, great experience, this place is an UWS gem.

Stopped by here on a Thursday morning to grab a snack during our walk and this was literally the best croissant and cheese danish I have ever had. It was soft and buttery and I am waiting to come back and have it again. I know the lines here are long on the weekends but at this time, there was just a short one!

Biggest and best croissant you’ll find on the UWS, and honestly nothing else compares to it in the pastry case! Plus the price is right and the coffee refills are free. Just don’t sit outside (because you’ll get attacked by the tiny annoying sparrows literally jumping onto your plate for croissant crumbs).

I heard this place when my bro brought home desserts. I had their pumpkin cheesecake and I fell in love. I happened to be in Harlem and the hotel I was staying at is in Harlem and since this coffee spot is close by, I decided to gave breakfast here. Posted here is what I had for breakfast. It has a grainy texture, Betty flavor. Sorry, I forgot what it's called but I loved it! It wasn't bust for a Sunday morning. I liked the vibe - cozy, intimate. People from all walks of life have breakfast here. Their pumpkin cheesecake (not posted) is my go-to.

I used to come here a few years back when some of the employees spoke Hungarian - unfortunately now non of them do. They have amazing pastries and coffee, it's a very cute shop that's always packed and full of life. Don't let the line on the street discourage you, it moves fast and it's worth it. Not too authentic, but we'll take it :)

The best bakery in New York! I don’t know the name of everything I buy there (there are no signs with the name), but it’s all SOOOO DELICIOUS!

Amazing pastries! Usually, it's a long line but worth waiting and they attend super fast. Place is quite small and you can see a lot of students and people staying for long time. Taste the coffee too.

This place was very hyped up to me, and it did not deliver the flavors that I was anticipating. The ambiance and vibe of the cafe is very homey with lots of space for reading, writing, working or whatever you may go to a cafe to do. The cardamom bun and the poppy seed danish were underwhelming, though. Not the place to go for pastries, but the place to go for a cool environment.

No-frills bakery perfect for a sweet snack. Came here to get some work done. The seating space is quite large but crowded. A lot of people come to catch up with friends, read, or work. There were a lot of dessert and pastry options. Service was prompt and friendly.

My FAVORITE pastry shop in NYC! Highly recommend everyone to give it a try! I stayed in NYC for a week and visited three times for either breakfast or afternoon desserts. EVERYONE please try their pastries (especially Napoleon cake!!)

I hadn't been here in many years, so I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it once was. I was wrong. We had about five desserts and three different types of coffee and all were excellent. We arrived around 1:00 in the afternoon and the place was packed, plus there was a line outside the door, but it didn't take too long to get a table. I highly recommend the sour cherry pastry and the custard field pastry, but I can say with all honesty that everything is good at the Hungarian Pastry Shop.

Wish I could come here more regularly. I love this place!!! The pastries are so good and the vibe inside the cafe is perfection. Apricot hazelnut cake pictured is great, got a slice of chocolate cake and cherry cheese strudel to go and have even most of it in one night. Idk why people say it’s overrated, this place makes me miss Central and Eastern European pastries 😭

Delicious pastries in a lovely atmosphere. We love coming here and getting typical Hungarian breakfast in a charming environment. Prices are modest, while staff is young and cordial and serve you quickly. My cappuccino and plain croissant were exquisite.

This place is so good there was quite a line before we could order. I have to recommend you try any of their chocolate cakes, especially the one shown in the picture.

Great energy and comfy environment. Cheesecake and almond croissant was great. Tho, the cheese puff wasn’t as fluffy puff as it looked; it had more of a biscuit texture than a puffy fluffy goodness. To each their own. I’ll be back to taste their other baked goods. Overall; GREAT. 😊

I feel this is an overrated place. I tried the poppy seed pastry and it was horrible. Filo dough was stale, dry and tasted funny, The poppy seed paste as well tasted weird (im a huge poppy seed lover/eater). The place is super crowded you can't get a chance to browse normally. All in all, i won't go again.

  • 2/5 Suki C. 5 months ago on Google
The pastries we tried here were not good - the poppy seed strudel had a paste that was too sweet and too thick and the pastry was dry, the Sacher cake was very dry, and finally we had a romkugle, which had a decent taste but the texture was waxy. It definitely did not taste like cakes/pastries in Hungary. Very long line on a Saturday afternoon - not worth it.

Amazing pastry. Good recommendations from friendly staff. Very good latte that has a reasonably sized (ie not huge) option. Not inexpensive (for a non-New Yorker not accustomed to city prices), but high quality. Would be delighted to return.
