This was a former Military barracks which was off limits to the public. I've always wondered what it was like on the Island and today it's no longer a Military base it's now opened to the public. A short 8 minute ferry ride across, brings you to the 172 acre island. There's not much to do when you get there except walk the Island, or you can rent a bike to see some of the remaining historical buildings, and enjoy spectacular views of Manhattan from a great vantage point. There's a few places to eat, one of which is an oyster bar right on the water with pretty views of Manhattan.

The most amazing place. A must to visit a completely tranquil environment just a short ferry ride from Manhattan. Just a shame that they don't have more historic value...in my opinion some of the buildings should be open and set up to recreate what life would have been like to live on the island. The grounds, views and picnic areas are stunning

It is a pretty park with lots of walking and very hot. I am glad I visited but probably won't return. It's nice for people/children to visit from the city and need outdoor space. I saw a few families who brought their own bikes. The buildings are vacant. They offer shuttle service around the park but only Wednesday thru Sunday. Only 2 food places were open the day I visited and it was a little pricey but not bad. A nice looking spa is on the park. Only access is my ferry.

During Covid and Winter, I wouldn't recommend this place unless you're here for the National Park stamp / Junior Ranger or you're coming for ice skating for the Winter Village - too much is closed down so after making your loop around the island, that's all that there is to it. We started on a 12:45 PM walking tour on 2/19/2022 but cut it short and took the ferry back to the mainland when a spur of the moment snowstorm hit and the tour guide decided to still do the 15 minute introduction outside of the main building. I didn't have gloves or earmuffs and it was just way too cold to stand stationary for that long. If you don't care about National Park stuff, you should wait on visiting until the weather is warmer and more of the buildings aside from the bathroom and coffee shop open up.

Just a short ferry ride and you're away from the hustle of NYC. The view are amazing. Great for picnics and other recreational activities. Bikes are available for rent of all designs. 2 person and 4 person bikes as well. It is easily walkable and has an amazing view of new York city's lower Manhattan skyline. The statue of liberty is also within a close viewing proximity.

Excellent place to release the stress of NYC life. They have food vendors, bikes, hammocks, slides, zip lining, wall climbing, 2 Historical Forts, many activities for children. There is the hill with an amazing view of Liberty island, New Jersey and New York skylines. They have free bikes Monday to Friday for all the people that get there before noon. They have books exposition every weekend and free kayaking every saturday.

Great area for young children to enjoy and have fun. Adults can enjoy the lawn and walks (or biking) around the park. Make sure to bring own food and water (there are fountains) or you'll be spending more than you want to.

One of the best parks ever. The island is only accessible by ferry, which limits crowds. There is plenty to do. The views are unbeatable. It seems to get better with every visit. a very interesting museum about the history of the immigration to the US. the museum is very well equipped with documents, movies photos about the life of the millions that immigrated and arrived to NEW YORK-the gate to AMERICA and the NEW WORLD.

Fun place to visit with friends and family, especially to get away from the city; did not feel like I was anywhere close to NYC. It takes 5-10 minutes by ferry from either Pier 11 Manhattan or Pier 6 Brooklyn. Plenty of photo opportunities around, with great views of the city skyline and Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island. Recommend bringing your own food as the island food options are fairly expensive.

There's still a lot of work to be done here, but it truly is a unique place to visit. There are countless abandoned buildings to peak inside, plenty of places to eat and drink, historical buildings to explore such as Fourt Jay and Fourt Williams, beautiful scenery and photo opts. Not only this, but there is always something going on here, with art and public events taking place all of the time. There are temporary and permanent art exhibits places around the island. Very cool place to explore. You can rent bikes (super comfy seats) or carts to drive around the island. Theres also camping, but you have to pay a lot to do so. Looks worth it though because you stay in luxury teepees that overlook the Statue of Liberty. Just wish there was a bit more, like shops and to do's, but as I said they are working hard on building it up again.

Had a very good time over there. The ferry was free for NYC ID holder so that was a good surprise. Big enough to spend the whole day looking around for a whole day. My only complaint is they don’t have enough good food on the governors island itself. Governors island itself is pretty clean and all.

Wow this place is a hidden jem. A 5 minute ferry ride from Manhattan. $4 for the ride. Island is kid friendly. Glamping looked amazing. The Spa is incredible. And the view from the spa is surreal.

A brief ferry ride to the Governor's Island. Small enough island to enjoy in one day either by bike riding or walking. Fair amount of kid options to play and enjoy, especially the Playground place. Food options are just ok and most of the food trucks seem to only take cash. Usually an event going on do you can watch and enjoy.

If you want a quiet place for brunch-ing and picnics, somewhere with a bit of history, a place to detach from the city but not too far. Enjoy the day and bike along the island, or seat and enjoy margarittas as the sunsets or just a peaceful neighborhood to hang out in....this is your spot. Bike rental can be pricey...so if you have your own bike, you can take it along the ferry going to the island.

Fantastic! Glad we finally came. MUCH larger than I thought it was. Bikes are a great idea to explore the island. Very good taco place or being lunch and a blanket and just hang out. Ferry from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park made for an easy and scenic (though brief) ride. Relaxing and is a great example of yet another place in NYC where you just kind of pinch yourself and say "am I really in the largest city in the US"? Seems remote yet the skyscrapers of lower Manhattan are right across the water.

This is a beautiful, eclectic (if somewhat busy) park that's a weird mix of old and new. Ive lived in NYfor over 15 years and this was my first visit, deciding to go on a whim There's a fort originally built in the late 1700s, but when you look in the windows of the barracks, the rooms look updated as recently as the 1990's, which is strange since no one lives there. The hammock Grove is absolutely lovely and the flora are beautifully kept. Food and drinks are ridiculously expensive though Will definitely make my way back.

Was not much to do. Says there is a slide but we could not find it. The crepe place took quite a while to prepare our food. The farm and composting area is very interesting! Great place for kids

Governor’s island is an awesome location to relax with family and friends. The ferry costs $3 for a round trip. It’s a great space to also chill and spend some alone time with yourself if you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I was there to conduct some research during FIGMENT NYC (2018) hence the large crowds, tents and art displays on the field. Though there were so many events on the island while I was there, I know that the island is big enough to always find somewhere quiet at all times during the open hours. The food trucks that are occasionally on the island can be pricey. So if you can, buy some food or put together a picnic basket before getting on the ferry.

Was nice to sneak inside on the NYC open house day, like a time travel. They hadn't opened it for the public since something like 1996. It would be amazing if they could restore it, and open it as a ballroom/bar/ restaurant some day.

I had high expectations for a day trip to Governors Island but it was honestly... a strange vibe. I think it's worth checking out if you live locally and just want something to do (maybe not on a peak summer day but in the slight off-season). That being said... I don't know... it was kind of strange with abandoned buildings and really expensive food carts. The food was fine/good but not anything to write home about. There are also some cool spots, and would probably have been better if I had brought my own bike. It's a pretty big place to get around, though you certainly can walk, and the bike sharing situation was not working well (most of them were out of order when I was last there). Strange spot, in my opinion, not the worst if you need some nature but I'd suggest bringing sufficient food, drink, snacks, a bike/be prepared to walk a lot, a picnic blanket, etc.

Governors Island is a unique and charming destination that offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City. Located just off the southern tip of Manhattan, this 172-acre island has a rich history and provides a serene retreat with stunning views of the city skyline. One of the best aspects of Governors Island is its accessibility. Visitors can reach the island by ferry, which adds an element of adventure to the experience. The short ferry ride itself is enjoyable, providing picturesque views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Lower Manhattan skyline. Once on the island, you'll find a variety of activities to suit different interests. The island's expansive green spaces are perfect for picnics, leisurely strolls, or relaxing in the shade. The bike rental services make it easy to explore the island at your own pace, allowing you to visit its numerous historic landmarks, art installations, and natural landscapes. The island also hosts a vibrant calendar of events and festivals throughout the year. From food festivals to art exhibitions, concerts, and outdoor movie screenings, there's always something happening on Governors Island. These events add to the island's lively atmosphere and make it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Furthermore, Governors Island offers a range of dining options, from food trucks and casual eateries to upscale restaurants. You can enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the breathtaking views of the harbor and skyline. One of the few drawbacks of Governors Island is its limited operating season. The island is typically open to the public from May to October, which means it may not be accessible during the colder months. Additionally, some visitors might find the island's relatively small size limiting, especially if they are seeking a more extensive outdoor experience. Overall, Governors Island is a hidden gem in New York City, offering a peaceful oasis with stunning views and a wide range of activities. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day in nature, cultural events, or a family-friendly outing, Governors Island has something to offer everyone. It's a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking a unique and memorable experience in the Big Apple

Easy access to this small and less known island right in the New York harbor area . You can take the ferry from downtown Manhattan and be in the island in a few minutes , walking or riding a bike this is a peaceful and well maintained place . In a busy day make sure you plan your return to the city .

One of my absolute favorite places to visit and relax, get away from the city hustle and bustle. You take the ferry over and feel like you’re in a whole new world! They’ve listened to visitors about having free WiFi in the park, more bathrooms, and water stations. You have so much space to social distance. I love the lavender farm, it smells beautiful going past it. The red chairs are iconic. The views are unbeatable from the hills. Hammock Grove is so relaxing, you feel like you’re in the Caribbean. Just wish they had more food options open on other days besides the weekend. It’s beautiful in all the seasons that it’s open. Blooms in springtime, relaxing in the summer, and foliage and pumpkins in the fall.
