An underrated museum. Depicts the history of the subway, the challenges faced and how the city evolved in parallel. It has 2 floors where the upper one has some exhibits and the lower one has actual older train coaches, the control station and the signals! (It's an unused subway station) You can enter these coaches, sit and take pictures. Fun to see the style/design/colours used before. Some Ads and Warnings are hilarious and take us back to the time 😂 Shop merchandise seemed a bit on the higher side. Staff is really nice. Museum is totally worth 10 bucks, highly recommend!

A NYC Historical Gem. I haven't been here in decades and it was even better than I remembered as a kid. Such an amazing display of the history of NYC transit. The art, old trains, information really made it a great visit. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable. I definitely recommend to everyone. Can't wait to visit again.

This museum is housed in an old subway station. The ground floor has various exhibits about transit history, as well as transit memorabilia such as old fare boxes. The basement floor has old subway cars, most of which you can enter and walk through. It's a lot of fun, especially for kids. Bathrooms are available, though no restaurant or place to eat. The souvenir shop has all kinds of fairly inexpensive transit related items. If you are at all interested in public transit systems, even if you don't know much about the New York system, this museum is a great place to visit.

The transit museum is really nice. You can see the process of creating the subways and they touch on how the workers were often taken from poor communities, mistreated, and the conditions they worked in. They have the old turnstiles and the old tokens, and the old trains you can walk in and read the advertisements from years ago! İt might say you only need 1.5-2 hours, but if you really want to experience everything it's easily a day. The gift shop is what i was hoping would be the best part, but i liked the trains the most. You can really feel like it's the 20's or 40's or 70's when you go in. Highly recommend.

The museum is underground and part of an actual subway, they have out of commission train cars from a hundred years ago that you can walk through and sit in. Many many different models. Lots of interactive exhibits you can walk through, touch, and sit in. Lots of information on the walls for those who are curious. There were many families with young children here, seems to be a great experience for little kids. They have lots of places for parking your stroller.

So impressed of this museum. I found the history and information here very impressive considering that where I live we don't have a subway. Very clean place, interactive enough, and things have been kept in good shape. I would recommend this for sure. Great and affordable things to get from the gift shop too!

My partner and I aren't big museum people, but in a city packed with some of the world's finest we felt obligated to at least go to one during our week-long trip to NYC. We are so glad we chose the Transit museum! Your $10 admission goes a long way here. The museum is located in an old subway station and has loads of train cars you can check out. They also have an exhibit on how subway construction was photographed at the time, which I found especially interesting. While we don't have kids, I could see them having a total blast here. My one gripe would be the lack of accessibility, as the only way to access the museum is down a set of stairs.

The museum is a full block long, the downstairs section is full of train carts from all the time periods of the NYC subway system. The gift shop is also great, the prices are a bit too high for my taste. Had a great visit! 10/10

Had a great time here. So many interesting facts about the history of the subway it really blew my mind. I love how they have all the different rail cars through the years not only on display but you can walk in them and sit in them. Cool seeing all the old advertisements on the subway walls. I was very impressed for such a low price.

Very well done museum! The main level has interesting displays, images, and other historical information and the lower level has a dozen or more actual train cars from different time periods that you can walk through and sit in. Just be ready to carry strollers up and down stairs and note that they don’t accept Apple Pay on site.

The New York Transit Museum, located on 99 Schermerhorn Street in Downtown Brooklyn, is an intricately designed compilation of transportation technology. This technology ranged from standard train cars to the more luxurious forms of transportation like high end train cars with cushioned seats and leather straps hanging from the ceiling of the train for standing passengers. Within each exhibit there is a little bit of history about how the development of transit began and the innovations created to keep people safe who chose to use public transit. This is museum is more than just organized exhibits that are used to display a specified timeline which is hidden behind inches of glass. Rather, this museum is a real life sized interactive experience that you have to see to believe. After visiting this museum and absorbing the knowledge that each exhibit provided, I can honestly say that I urge all New Yorkers in the downtown area to give this museum a shot.

The New York Transit Museum was a great experience learning about how the subway system was built. At $10 a person it's very reasonably priced. There's a ton of great pictures and artifacts to explore with detailed descriptions on how the system came to life. It's amazing they knew then what would be needed to help move people around the city.

This place was so much fun! Part of the museum is actually in an old subway terminal. So many cool pictures and replicas of trains throughout the year. Lots of photo Ops and interactive options. A must do for public transit lovers like myself. Only $10 a person.

If you like public transportation around the world, especially NYC, this museum is for you. They provide a very good experience. I would like that could be more interactive, with videos and stuff, but it is absolutely recommend. Tickets are 10 bucks and the store is not expensive compared to other "museum stores". The museum uses a decommissioned subway station. Excellent 👌

This place is the best! You can sit, stand, and pretend to ride some of the coolest train models spanning NYC’s rich transit history. They also have a turnstile display, multiple interactive setups, and a full scale bus inside the station. Plus, the entry fee is only $10. Make sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

Fabulous museum located in Brooklyn! Highly recommend visiting whether you are a tourist visiting the city or a local, the subway system is a very complex system that has taken over a hundred years of work to get to where it is today and this museum showcases all of it along with the bus system as well! The vintage train cars are incredible and really give you an idea of what it must have been like to use the system in those time periods.

Great museum and great price! The first floor is the history of the subway and the bottom floor is all the old subway cars! Seeing the ads and what used to be is acceptable is hysterical! I totally recommend going for a day! It only cost $10 and we spent 2 hrs there! I probably wouldn't go back again, unless I was really into trains

I love this museum, it is located in the decommissioned Court Street subway station (what better location for a transit museum), the station was opened in 1936 and closed 10 years later in 1946 due to its proximity to other stations. The cars still have the old advertisements along with their period furnishings. Just sitting inside one of these cars sends you back in time, especially with the very moderate number of visitors. This is quite an exceptional museum.

Very nice museum if you like the subway. You get to try out different turnstiles from different periods, see how the subway was constructed, and more. The best part is downstairs on the tracks are models of all the subway cars which you can go into, sit inside, check out the vintage ads etc. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the cars are missing the iconic graffiti that plagued the subway back in the day. If I remember correctly, they said it's China's fault because the cars for the museum were ordered from them and the Chinese thought they want perfectly clean cars for the museum!

Cool little museum. Didn’t take us too long to go through but was interesting and fun. The kids I saw were so engaged, walking through the old school trains, turn style, posters, phone and interesting history. Entertaining enough for all but highly recommend for families and Children.

Transit nerd alert. The New York Transit Museum is a unique fusion of a subway station and a museum. It offers a captivating journey through a century of transit history in New York, where the vintage cars have retained their authentic look, feel, and even smell. Exploring the museum allowed me to immerse myself in the bygone era, discovering fascinating insights into life through the train advertisements and the food preferences of the past. In today's world, the cut and cover method used to construct the subway system would be deemed unimaginable, but it was this very unconventional approach that contributed to the remarkable rise of NYC. These trains were not just modes of transportation; they carried with them the dreams and aspirations of countless individuals.

This my second trip to this museum. The entry price differs for seniors, kids and disabled = discounted to $5. I purchased tickets while waiting online. The entry was $10 per adult. I enjoyed the museum. Very interesting. Cool props and loaded with information. Brought back memories of transit travel. They have a Spot It game for visitors to learn more and entertain the kids, with locating items. That was nice to experience. The restrooms were clean. Souvenirs are priced well for unique items. Museum Crew was polite, helpful and knowledgeable.

The New York Transit museum is amazing to understand the industrial history of NYC and the USA. The museum has photos from the early construction and model trains from each of its iterations at the lower level. During the summer the entrance of the museum can get a little hot and sweaty but after the first exhibit it will space out to be comfortable and breathable. A fun place to take children and take photos along the model trains and buses.

This was recommended as a rainy day activity. So very interesting to see, hear and experience history of NY subway system! Loved especially all the old subway cars from generation to generation. We were lucky to just be behind a school field trip so we’re able to take our time. Definitely to check out rain or shine.

I've been to the museum a few times, I always liked it, cause of the nicely illustrated history of the city. I even was a sustaining member mainly to get the chance to see the abandoned underground station below the City Hall to visit. Another benefit of this membership is that you can board the USS Intrepid on the Hudson River for free together with a non-member.

New York Transit Museum is one of the hidden treasures of NYC museums. Where else can you wander through a closed subway station filled with vintage subway cars? This family-friendly museum has an all-ages appeal and is more reasonably priced than most of the major museums in Manhattan. The museum is a short walk from the Brooklyn Borough Hall and Jay St./Metro Tech stations.

This is one of the few museums in New York that has affordable prices, children who love trains enjoy it and you can learn more about the history of this city. The children loved this experience! I recommend this museum, the prices of the trains are much cheaper to buy them in this store than in Amazon for those who want to collect them. The truth is that we as adults enjoy visiting it.

This place was a great place to experience the history of the transit system. The staff were kind and there was no line to enter. The museum includes a lot of interactive parts including turnstiles, old trains and buses. A great museum about the full transit history of New York. It’s includes information about the original tram system, buses, and the construction of the subway system. Biggest highlight is the functioning subway underneath the central area that includes old subway cars from 1907 to the modern day, with the original advertisements still in place. Only costs $10 per person so is very cheap and well worth it!

Nightlife at the Academy of Sciences was a great way to catch up with old friends that I met studying abroad a few years ago. I recently moved to the area, but the California Academy of Sciences' nightlife on Thursday nights seems like a hoppin destination in Golden Gate park for science and alcohol lovers to meet up for some fun. Most of the crowd seemed to be in their 20's and 30's, with a $15 entrance fee. I recommend buying your tickets online and also checking out the Planetarium show, which was definitely unique and rotates in variety. I had two manhattans for $12 which were pretty average, but you are walking through looking at animals and exhibits, so I wasn't too picky. Overall I would recommend it as a fun thing to do on a Thursday night, especially for a date.

The entrance to the museum looks like any subway station, and in fact, it's housed in a decommissioned station. After heading underground and buying tickets (recommend purchasing in advance) the exhibits start. It's a very interesting museum that goes into the history of the NYC subway, going back to its construction in the early 1900's. There's a ton of archival photos and interesting stories about the monumental feat of constructing a subway system. The museum covers everything up until the present day. One of the most interesting parts of the museum are the many antique subway cars, beautifully maintained with period authentic ads. If you live in NYC or are a transit aficionado, I highly recommend a visit.

What a gem. One of those quintessential “underground treasures” that I can’t believe isn’t a massive, overly crowded tourist destination like just about everywhere in New York. The setting is glorious--the museum is housed in an old subway station, so you descend stairs just as you would to enter the subway, and pass through turnstiles to enter a museum--clever, inventive experience. The museum starts off with a great history of the NY transit system throughout. The history section is occasionally moving and impressively informative, as the size and scope of the subway system and the struggles of the laborers who helped build it is well-depicted. But the highlight of course is the downstairs collection of impressively preserved historical subway cars going back over 100 years. The design of the cars, the artistry of the old subway ads, the instagrammable photo-op of standing in a subway car from the 50s? All extraordinary! Pretty reasonably priced entry, too--I think it was $10? A little disappointed it wasn't the cost of one swipe of a Metrocard, but what can you do? If you are a fan of New York City and its history and/or old trains—and why the heck wouldn’t you be—this is an underrated, can’t-miss visit. As it is in an old subway station, not well heated or air conditioned, so plan accordingly.

Subways and trolleys are an fundamental piece of NYC’s history. You’ll discover many of these artifacts in the New York Transit Museum. Here, you’ll find a fascinating collection of subway cars dating back to 1916! Also, find wooden elevated train cars that go back to the late 1800s! The trolleys are decorated with captivating old ads, much the same as when these vehicles were still connecting the city! Amazing place to visit!

A small museum dedicated to the many people and machines that keep NYC going. For those with small ones that don't read, you're going to enjoy going through the turnstiles, pretending to sell tickets, sitting in the bus, and exploring the trains on the lower platform. You will max out at about two hours. For your big kids, there's more history and how to exhibits, so maybe it will take a little longer. Note that the museum is NOT good for strollers or wheelchairs. To get access to the accessible stair, you need a separate entrance and have to call ahead and then repeat the process when you want to go down to the tracks. For COVID, they are timing entry and requesting proof of vaccination, in alignment with the city standard. (Kid exempt from vaccine proof). Masks are required. They've taken out a bunch of the interactive parts of the museum during this time (art programs, the toy train tracks in the back room, the electric fueling at the bus, sitting in the driver's seats). Tickets are affordable for such a small museum, the gift shop is excellent.

Wow! What a hidden gem in NYC! A very affordable museum that was the caked with tones of interesting things from the entirety of the MTA’s history! I’d HIGHLY recommend making the easier than expected trek. Heads up the entrance is actually a subway vestibule- it’s hard to miss! Look carefully!

A great place to learn about New York City's Transit System; it is historical, super engaging, and even fun for kids. I am an avid genealogist and amateur historian, born and raised in the Bronx. I enjoyed every second of it even though I am on the train a million times a week. I brought my father and brother. It was great; families everywhere, couples, old and young. I suggest buying your tickets in advance and arriving a few minutes before your allotted time. Don't go too early and don't go too late.

Very interesting and high quality place. Who would have thought such a mundane part of life could be so inspiring and fascinating. Going into all the older models of the cars was an incredibly interesting and fun part.

There's a bunch of different murals that could create an illusion when you take a photo. The place was fairly crowded when we went so I suggest you prebuy tickets online where you can choose a specific time. If you show up at your time, they'll let you in right on time so you don't really need to wait in line. You can also use those tickets anytime but then you may need to wait in the general line if there is a queue.

This museum has been on my list for a while. Decided to swing buy during a free Sunday and thought it was a great way to spend roughly 2.5 hours. It’s not huge but has a breadth of information to read on the walls - the photos were also pretty cool to see. The start of the exhibit seemed to not have ac and it was really hot; later on the museum was in fact cooler and the hottest portion of it was coincidently also where they detailed the digging of all the tunnels (which you can imagine was not pleasant). I don’t think it was planned and it’s really astonishing what workers endured to given nyc such a robust transit system

It was great learning the history of transit. Best museum I yet seen. My family and I enjoyed entering all the trains made in the 1900's.

Nice local museum to visit with family and friends. Very small, but interesting history and you can explore subway carts. $10 for general admission. When I visited on Sunday it was not too busy.

This is a really cool museum! Aside from their great service, the museum has old subways and you'll see the old models of the cars which is actually interesting.

Was impressed to be honest. It was like traveling back in time. Black/White Pic, Old train cars from 1916-1980 Old train cars even have that old smell to them, that was awesome tbh. At some point it got busy. Gift shop pricey. One very kind man that works there told us a little history, we learned something new. Helpful stuff.
