I've visited twice and it's been amazing both times. The first floor fixed exhibits are super interesting if you're an NYC history geek like me. You can easily spend 4 hours here (including the 40 min intro film, which if definitely worth watching). Most events from the Dutch settling the city to present day are covered. There is lots to read, look at, and interact with, athough I wouldn't say that this museum is super kid-friendly -- it's very information dense. The revolving exhibits are fascinating, and this time there was an 80s NYC music exhibit (Hip Hop, Soul, Electronic) and a super interesting "Analog NYC" section.

Beautiful museum. The exhibits are engaging for both adults and kids and show different facets of New York. We especially loved the dollhouse exhibit. The 30 min video was very informative and interesting. The museum is designed in a modern and inviting way. A fun trip and unique experience. (Pay what you wish if you ask at ticket counter :) great gift shop too.

If you're looking for an interesting museum in the City, this is it. They have some really cool exhibits. I originally went to see the Puppet exhibit (which unfortunately is now over) but found other gems here. The interior is gorgeous as well! Its a great place to go if you wanna learn about NYC.

Small but great museum if you want to learn more about history of New York City. Pay as you wish to enter with suggested price of 20$. Exhibits are informative and engaging. Has a NYC music history exhibit, puppets of NYC, history of the city, a theater with a 20 minute video of how NYC of today was formed and a games arcade. Will take 2-3 hours to go through the exhibits. Would recommend a visit.

This is an interesting local history museum with permanent and temporary exhibits: from the history of New York City since pre-Columbian times to the modern day, this museum captures a snapshot of what NYC stands for. I especially liked the exhibit on the top floor which dealt with the impact of NYC on different art forms. My visit was really worth it, and best thing was the artisan market on the museum lobby!

Very nicely organized museum to learn about the city. Lots history to read and love that they high lights lots of individuals as well. It was very cool to see the music section as well as the movie section on the 3rd floor. It might look small compared to other museums in the city but three hours wasn't enough for us to get through everything!!! Will definitely come back soon for more! It was a nice 10 minutes walk through Central Park to the museum when you take 2 train from the west side! Highly recommended for both New Yorkers and tourists.

I was led to the museum through the great Gingerbread Bake Off. In the holiday season I love to enjoy the festivities that Christmas brings. Gingerbread appealed and I liked that they were iconic NY places. This was a fun exhibit to see. The museum overall has some really interesting exhibits especially if you are a history buff. Its challenging to capture some 400 years of NY history in a few rooms but the museum presents a great birds eye view. Its a place where you will want to take your time and read for sure. NY at Its Core has interesting exhibits and the Activist NY exhibit did a fantastic job of presenting easy to follow timelines of controversial topics that have rocked the city at its foundation. All were very well presented. Give yourself time to take it all in!

If you live in NYC, you must come here! You will learn about the wild NYC history and I promise the past stories of this city will resonate with you in some way. The visuals combined with projectors and technology make this a stunning way to take in the history of this city from the 1600s new Amsterdam to today. There are 4 floors full of interesting exhibits, plan on spending the entire day. There is a cafe on the second floor if you need a pick me up. There was a floor with photos of people and food through out nyc history and an eye opening exhibit on activism. There was one on communication, printing press, telephone newspaper and stock market back then when and how they were created. Plus there was a really cool gingerbread house exhibit you have to see!

Wow, wow, wow. I was here for three hours, and there was still more to see and learn. Having lived in New York City my entire life, I am embarrassed to say that I had never been to this museum before. The exhibits are exceptionally well done with a narrative that gives you context on the moment in time, with displays of artifacts from the period to help add context. The ground floor features a timeline that walks you through the centuries, what was happening, and who the players were. Once you head upstairs, there’s a fantastic video installation with classic clips from decades of movies that have been filmed in New York in a virtual surround experience. There are also contemporary installations that include an audiovisual map of hip-hop across the city to the tutu worn in sex in the city. I will most certainly need to return to this museum, and as a native New Yorker, I plan on contributing as a member to show my support

Lots of stories from the city. I particularly Lives the room that shows movies filmed in NY, film runs for about 15-20min and its so good. Make sure to scan QR to get full lost of books, films and music. There is a ginger bread house temporary Expo and it's just so cute. Entrance is 20usd but up to you if you want to pay less. Store is nice too to grab souvenirs.

We came on a Sunday just after lunch with a sleeping baby and a 6 years old. There is an entrance without step on the side. We went to see the New York movie right away and that was really interesting. We loved the story telling installation and we listened to many story about New York with my kids. We watched the movie installation entirely too. It was so well done that we almost watched it twice. If you have time they do a tour that goes more in depth about the history of New York. It is really cool museum.

This is a great museum. I would highly recommend it. In particular, the activist of New York was an amazing exhibition that really stood out to me as something that was different and well structured. It was easy to go through each section and understand what the point of view was where it came from. What changed over time? The video as well on the ground floor was unbelievably. Interesting to see how New York has changed over time, where it started and that where it's going and overall a good museum where you can jump between the different sections and easily find your way

The Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) is a history and art museum in Manhattan, New York City, New York. It was founded by Henry Collins Brown,[1][2] in 1923[3] to preserve and present the history of New York City, and its people. It is located at 1220–1227 Fifth Avenue between East 103rd to 104th Streets, across from Central Park in Manhattan's Upper East Side, at the northern end of the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue.

Especially appreciated Rising Tide and Port City exhibits-- both very well done and engaging. Port City in particular uses technology well to allow the viewer to explore at your own pace. Super engaging museum and fascinating way to learn about the city.

Super interesting place. I came alone and came to learn, which I did. The history of the city is fascinating, and the museum actually does a superb job is presenting that. The building is nice, clean and accessible, and not at all crowded. (I went on a Thursday evening). Also, the gift shop is wild (& made me wish I had more $$$😉) Would definitely recommend for nerds!

This museum deserves more hype. It’s very well curated and very lefty. They have a lot of exhibitions about art, music, and activism. Some interactive exhibitions are even enjoyable for kids. One special thing about this museum is staff seem very passionate and content. Looks like this museum treat their people nice. Chris is a great guide for showing me around on 3rd floor and share his favourite part about this museum. And another gentlemen seems to know lots of language and making travel recommendations. Anyway, I am very glad I added this museum to my busy itinerary. If I’m a New Yorker I would pay visit regularly.

Great pay-what-you-wish museum. We only got through the first floor in an hour (the exhibits document the progression of NYC over time). It was great! Lots of cool artifacts to see from the 1800’s up to 2012. We’ll definitely be back to do the rest of the museum!

Highly recommend checking out this museum if you have even a fractional in the history of the city of New York. The museum itself is a beautiful building from the 1920s with a glorious marble staircase at its center. The exhibits were all marvelously well put together as well very digestible. There is a great 30 min documentary about the evolution of the city (narrated by Stanley Tucci) that plays in the basement. I highly recommend viewing this as it was very informative! A lot of folks seem to miss this when they visit as despite the museum being busy there were only 4 people in the theater including myself!

I was passing this museum at around 4 pm on the way to the park with a friend. I’m a native New Yorker and have been to almost every museum but this one. We decided to stop in and it was so interesting. There are many floors and we were not expecting it to take so long to see everything. The main floor had a few gingerbread houses which was fun. They close at 5 on a Sunday so allow enough time. There are educational short films and film collages about activism in the city, and human rightss. Period clothing on the third floor was enjoyable.

I hadn't heard much of this museum even though I grew up in New York City so I wasn't expecting a lot going into it. I actually decided to go here at the last minute instead of the sky scraper museum because it had better reviews. I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed the museum and how much content they have. The videos and exhibits are all well laid out and really informative. The building is also beautiful and right alongside the east side of Central Park. I will definitely be coming back to see the parts of the museum I didn't have time to see.

The security guard kept following my wife and I. We couldn't understand why the guard kept following us. We travelled over 600 miles to take a short four day holiday in NYC, spent the days going to all the museums and restaurants we could. The guard may have been on drugs.

This was an amazing museum that beautifully combined history and education. With the New York New Music:1980-1986 exhibit, they gave the experience a relaxed and welcoming vibe. The bottom floors are more about traditional history but the displays and graphics capture your attention while passing along informative information. I would highly recommend this museum for people with a casual interest in history as well as for people who study it.

I would definitely recommend this museum if you don’t want to get overwhelmed like with MOMA or Met and want to learn about the NYC. There are three floors, I would recommend to start with the first one and then the collections will go chronologically. There are also couple of special exhibits, e.g. one about puppets. There is also a pretty cool museum shop and there was a small cafe.

Visited a year plus back and just today and was wowed. The current exhibits are especially great - main level covers the history of NYC (with some fantastic data visualizations) and on the top floor they have a wonderful exhibit on NYC in the arts and pop culture. Take advantage of a docent tour or two on the main level - they are passionate and knowledgeable story tellers who will enrich your experience. Highly, highly recommend for New Yorkers and visitors. Budget at least three hours. I was there for nearly five, but was really enjoying immersing in the exhibits.

Alright so let’s start with the good. You learn a lot. They really do give you a good view on the city and it’s history and it’s not all good, which I like. Too often city or state museums just focus on the positive but not this one and that was great. The material was wide in range and it was put together great. The multi media aspect was also good. Now the bad. The size. There just is t enough to see. That’s good problem right? I wanted more. More objects on display and more stories to read about. Things out of their control. I lucked out and got parking just across the street but I can see that being an issue. The cost wasn’t bad. I went for free which you can’t beat but even the normal price isn’t bad for what you get.

Great museum. Definitely will come back soon. The outdoor movie series is great. They currently have an exhibit on puppets called, "Puppets of New York" that looks at the history of puppetry in the city and all of its contributions. Definitely worth seeing, made for the young ones and those who are young at heart. <3.

As far as museums go, it's pretty manageable with only 3 main floors and 1 underground level. That's the only reason for 3 stars. To be honest, I was a bit let down. There was only one gallery/exhibit where they truly talked about the history of NYC, and they jumped or summarized a lot of periods. Another exhibit on the second floor did have a recap of technology, mainly communications and work applicable, as it developed over the 1900s. That was it though on the history. Other exhibits showed contemporary photographs, odd food details, and a gingerbread contest. Finally there was a video presentation about the history of NYC, but it really was just a recap of everything seen in that first exhibit gallery. They basically talk mostly about the founding of the city and early growth. Then jump to the early 1900s and development of mansions and early skyscrapers. Very little history in between given exposition. No revolutionary War history, urbanization, changing trends, etc. Good if in that area near Central Park that day. Otherwise you can probably learn most of the history shown here online. One tidbit of information that I did appreciate and was new to me was learning about the stock market women first working there.

I personally loved visiting the Museum of the City of New York. It’s a small museum, but as a resident, I loved learning about the history of the city on the first floor. I think that the time lapse videos showing the progression of the density, diversity, and money through time to be absolutely fascinating and a cohesive way to illustrate the history of this amazing city! I highly recommend this museum to any locals to learn more about our great city ❤️

Although this is a big tourist destination, I've always heard that the Museum of the City of New York is an absolute must for New Yorkers. The museum is located on Fifth Avenue at about 103rd street, right across the street from Central Park's beautiful conservatory gardens. Lots to see and do in the area, so make a day of it. Suggested admission is $20 for adults, but free for anyone under 20 years old. Its about $15 for seniors (65+) and students over 20. There are also discounts available regularly via Groupon or your NYC Library Card. Be sure to check those out before visiting. I visited on a nice Sunday at around 12:30pm and it was NOT too crowded. There was enough space for everyone to take their time to read and see all of the exhibits without overcrowding. The Museum is amazing. Essentially three floors of well-designed exhibits offerings lots of information about the beginnings of NYC up through 2020. You'll learn about how New York came to be the iconic city that it is...and journey through its various decades. Though I've always visited museums to learn about other cultures and historic times...it is very different when you have lived through some of the exhibits...9/11...and most recently COVID-19 to name a few. The first floor is more of the information, taking you through each decade...must like what you would expect from a typical museum. There is also a FOod of New York exhibit currently in place there. The second floor has a lovely photography exhibit displaying photos of the "homes" of New Yorkers and another exhibit covering the various movements throughout the history of New York up through Black Live Matter. The third floor is dedicated to entertainment; music, movie and fashion that were influenced by New York. There is a large room surrounded by large monitors displaying popular New York-based movies...visitors can sit in the middle area and look all around..pretty cool. There is also a basement floor which has an informative movie showing every (30 minutes?!) about New York. There is a cafe there on the second floor which sells baked items from Amy's Bread. Street parking isn't bad on the weekends...particularly easy on Sundays when most of the parking restrictions are NOT in effect. I absolutely loved my visit to the Museum. Although I expected to be in and out in an hour or so...I ended up spending three hours there. While I think this is a great museum for everyone, I absolutely agree that it is a MUST for all New Yorkers.

A very cool museum, definitely worth a visit. It’s pay what you feel admission, but the recommended is $20 per adult but free if you have ID NYC cards. Some of the exhibitions are amazing. We really love the activist room and definitely spent more time then we should’ve. The top floor has the century exhibition which is nice but the other exhibits were more interesting in my opinion. There’s a cafe too

The museum is housed in a beautiful building located across the street from Central Park. The museum offers many lively, interactive exhibits. Visitors can also view an exceptionally interesting thirty minute film, narrated by Stanley Tucci, covering the entire history of NYC. This film had been presented in a small theater in the museum. It is currently presented in a very large meeting room with more than adequate social distancing between the seats. The Museum of the City of New York is definitely worth visiting. There is also an excellent gift shop on the first floor.

I visited the museum with someone very close who is still quite new to New York City. We decided to go and see the museum and take a look at the history of the Big Apple. It is a wonderful museum full of interesting facts and exhibits about how the city that never sleeps came into existence the way we know it today. If you are curious about the development of New York from the time of the Dutch until present day then this museum is a must-see

We thought it'd be nice to bring the kids over for NYC history. I enjoyed the video that plays in the lower level the most. I thought that was the most overall history the experience offered. The photos of on the third floor and around some parts of the museum I also liked looking it at. The basketball, baseball, activism exhibits were okay.

Lots of space to wander around and explore the natural history, commerce, and art of the world’s finest city. Pairs perfectly with a day in the park and a stroll up or down fifth avenue. If you can’t squeeze you’re way into the met this is a great alternative for a quick visit.

I thought this museum was really cool! It tends to get overlooked because it has to keep up with the Met, MoMa, etc. This is unfortunate for them, but it isn’t necessarily a bad thing for you, as the visitor. You probably won’t be stuck in crazy lines or crowds, so you can move at your own pace with comfort. As far as the content goes, I really enjoyed the breadth. They had fantastic exhibits regarding the history of the city, a basketball exhibit, an activism exhibit, etc. I could go on about all of the exhibits, but you’d be better served to spend a few dollars to go see, and learn from, them for yourself. I will say that they had a futuristic exhibit that was closed due to COVID (in September 2020) that I’m bummed I didn’t get to see. With that said, the museum is still worth experiencing. It is very well maintained, and the staff are more than happy to give you some supplemental information if you ask for it.

Every New Yorker should visit — tucked a little out of the way from the other 5th Ave Museum Mile establishments, but worth spending a few hours here. Incredible NYC photography exhibits, great 30 min film of NYC’s history, and many angles on the city’s changes from its founding to 2020, even COVID-19 is included already in early 2021. The building itself is a work of art and a beautiful space! They also hold private events and receptions/benefits here if you need a venue. Grab an advance reservation for a $20 museum ticket on their website a few days in advance of your visit if you want to go (new COVID-19 protocols for limited capacity).

Pictures allows our impulses to travel more quickly and are being regarded as an unobtrusive facilitators of stabilizing , strengthening of life , but we have not reached similar levels of the pictures that people are fighting against a government or protect nature

Nice snapshots of NY history. They have a great data visualization room showing quantitative summaries of NY such as income distribution, race distributions by neighborhood, and more. Great for a rainy day.

Born and raised in NY, I've never heard of this museum. I ran across a groupon for it and took my son here while visiting for the holidays. It was amazing! All the history. We happened to be there on a day where a famous hip hop legend was giving a tour there and interacting with the patrons. We had a great time here. I love that my son had fun interacting with the audio/video and the hands on learning tools. What a great experience.

We love this museum! It’s a little further north than the rest of the museums on 5th ave, so it tends to get ignored, but it is such a gem! It takes you through the history in such a clear and interesting way. Love the special exhibits. The room that covered activism through time made me weep. It made me proud to live here! (We went during COVID-times, and there are great precautions in place.)

Only made it to the gift shop as we got there very late in the day and didn't want to pay for a ticket to only have a little bit of time inside. Gift shop has a lot of fun items. Bought a vintage puzzle that I cant wait to find time to do! Very nice customer service as well.

The interactive design your own city exhibit-the highlight imo, was closed due to the pandemic. It was the sole reason I brought the children there!

Awesome museum with great exhibits, friendly staff, and very empty on a Sunday ! It felt incredibly safe to go to this museum during covid and although this museum is only 3 floors, it took us over three hours to get through everything! Definitely worth a trip

It was amazing and also the entry fee is pay what you wish, it was a very visual and interactive way to learn about the history of New York, also the whole staff was helpful and friendly. The New York, New Music 1980-86 exhibition was cool too and it features Madonna so extra points for that

We loved this museum. It had several unique exhibits, and was just the right size. Easy to spend 2 hours and see the whole thing. And there’s a great little cafe also.

Of the museum experience I’ve had in NYC I will say this was pretty lackluster. There were good exhibits but it seems like we only got 70% of the museum. It just was not exciting. I learned a little, not more than you can find online. The music history exhibit was pretty cool but overall I will skip it next time.

If you like new music, fashion culture, MTV in 1980's, you'll get more background knowledge here. History of New York city is presented by projection tech. You might react with projector screen. There is one thing I thought NYC could be better at other topic of exhibitions, such as doll house exhibition.

Pay what you can museum, near the northern end of Museum Mile on 5th Avenue. Beautiful building. Several impactful exhibitions: history of New York, food in New York, dollhouse by a New York artist family, Stettheimer, and more. Nice cafe on 2nd floor. Video on New York in theatre on lower level. And two gift shops!!

The museum demonstrates New York City’s history in a very interesting way, and with some interactive installations, it’s such a fun visit! There is a cafe in second floor. And many iconic stories, histories, music, images in the showroom.

Excellent museum. Worth going every time. At the moment there is a wonderful immersive exhibition "New York in movies". A must see! I also loved the musical display about the different boroughs and their music. Museum shop and café are fine, too. Oh, and don't miss the staircase!

A wonderful "little" museum that included a lot of variety. There were 4 exhibitions in total with each representing a different part of the city's history or culture. I paid 20$ but the entry fee was optional. If you 've already been to the National museum, New York Library and the MOMA this might curb a bit of that tourism itch. The first floor showed the main history of New york from New Amsterdam to the covid years. There was also a smaller room dedicated to New Yorks food culture. On the second floor there were two exhibitions with one taking a look into what people find home to be in the big city and the other side showed New Yorks resistance movements and struggles to change society in a variety of ways. It is definitely worth about 2-3 hours if you want something extra to satiate your curiosity about the "city that never sleeps". Additionally for those that enjoy history take the time to listen to some of the audio files and read the plaques instead of trying to find a famous "selfie picture" since you will be hard pressed to find any there. For art lovers the photos showing peoples ideas of home is a real treat. I had a great time and even if the café was slightly expensive the carrot cake was more made up for it. The museum is also conveniantly close to Central Park so take a stroll through on your way there or on your way home.

A nice place to learn tons about the greatest city in the world! The film section is definitely worth checking out. I sort of wish they had more to the place, but in the end it was at least worth the money spent.

Should be a tourist must. History through films, television and artifacts. Floor contents explained by guides, maps and in elevators. History film in ground floor and film on third. Small cafeteria and clean bathrooms
