A modern and special Korean restaurant. A place that brings up good memories from upscale restaurants in Seoul. The dishes are wonderfully decorated and so delicious. It is highly recommended to take as many starters as possible and do not give up the excellent cocktails. The restaurant is not cheap but you get full value for money. We will definitely be back again.

This was truly an experience. Highly recommend making reservations to avoid waiting. Once we entered a nice lady asked us for COVID Vaccination proof and asked us to remove our shoes. We were then shown to out table. They have a unique and very authentic Korean table seating. They have an extensive menu which I was not expecting, considering this is all vegetarian restaurant. We did not like every single dish we ordered but overall the food was good. Also, if you don’t like mushrooms this is probably not the place for you. They have mushrooms in most of their dishes

fully vegan Korean restaurant. The vibes are amazing, and you have to take your shoes off to sit. The food is 4/5. Our favorite was the pancake set! The soy protein bulgogi stone pot is okay, as good as it gets for imitation meat I feel like (as a omnivore lol) I recommend🤩

We ate here on Thursday night before flying home the next day. My wife and daughter are both vegetarians so I've eaten at hundreds of vegetarian restaurants and none have impressed me until I ate here. The vegetarian food here is simply amazing. From the broths to the dipping sauces - rich and full of flavour. Truly exceptional vegetarian food (and this is coming from someone who dreads being dragged to a vegetarian restaurant by his wife). I also have to thank the person who was able to get us a table even though the place was jam packed. Thank you so much for helping make our last night in NYC awesome!

Delicious food with authentic Korean taste. Pure Vegan. They make you sit down in traditional Korean style. A great experience. Do make a reservation before visiting. A bit expensive though.

The most luxurious place I’ve ever been to enjoy both vegan and Korean food…and it was really memorable! I’m amazed by the possibility of vegan cuisine…the seasoning is very detailed! The dessert is also finger-licking good. Devine dinning experience!

This place was such a great finding! The food was terrific, and filling; the ambience was unparalleled. Overall, excellent value. Each course in the prix fixe a surprise and a delight. The Japanese decoration created perfect harmony and gave me a very relaxing time.

Tried the fried and silken tofu cutlets in spicy chili and soy bean sauce. The chili indeed had a super spicy bite. Kale dumplings in tofu skin were tangy and had a good texture. The seasonal king of mushrooms had a distinct flavor. Yet, the food did not wow me - I wonder what I missed. The seating with your shoes off is a nice touch. The tables are set very close to each other. The staff would need to bend over the table/ you to pour water into your glass if you are sitting near the wall. The vegan Korean dining experience seemed unique. You will require a reservation.

A Korean spot serving up vegetables in a cozy and traditional space. It's a no-shoes establishment where you get to sit on the floor and try a bunch of tasty vegetables. You get to rest your feet and leave feeling like you got a cultural experience with your dinner. Unfortunately, their food is hit or miss. Many of the appetizers we tried were average, if not just bad. The baby dumplings were flavorful but I didn't like the flavor palette. The pancake platter felt lacking (which I don't quite understand since kimchi pancakes don't even have meat in the first place.) The vermicelli noodle dish was bland. The mains were really tasty tho! We had the Mongolian hotpot and the spicy rice cakes. The hotpot stew was flavorful and the mushrooms were delicious. Overall, avoid the appetizers and get the mains. Perhaps give the rice bowl a try too, I noticed a lot of people had those! The service was a miss as well. Some of the staff didn't seem very friendly, almost giving off irritated energy... not too sure why.

Having a reservation here is recommended. Loved the food and service. Staff were attentive and friendly. Before being seated, shoes must be removed and staff will take care of them. Dining experience is one of a kind. We ordered Spicy baby dumplings, sesame leaf covered tofu, and tofu hot pot. All the items tasted fresh and to our likes. We will be back to try more items. Recommend this place.

We were recommended this place and let me tell you it doesn't disappoint. It isn't too common to have vegan/vegetarian Korean food so it was a treat. The fact it was done extremely well helps. The atmosphere was great, service was great, food was great. The tea was amazing and the soda I had was good too. There's not much to hate about this place. FYI you do have to remove your shoes and it does get busy. Would definitely recommend going out of your way for this place.

Stepping from the street into this tranquil space is like leaving New York and entering a secluded countryside temple in outer Korea. You walk in, take your shoes off and are escorted to your table. The table is sunken, so you gots to get down to eat. The food is stupendous. All vegetarian, all nutritious and delicious. I had the holiday prix fixe which left me super full after my meal. Definitely coming back soon and can't wait

The dim lighting, candles, and low seating at Hangawi create a comforting and quaint atmosphere. Guests remove their shoes at entry and are seated at open but intimate tables. This was my first experience with authentic Korean cuisine and Hangawi has lived up to its reputation. The food was rich with flavors seemingly familiar but unique enough to be new to me. I highly recommend the spicy cauliflower bites, I promise they aren't too spicy Genmar was a great server and all of the staff was attentive and hospitable. I drank like 5 glasses of water and my glass was almost never empty. Definitely check this place out if you're in the area, I know I'm already looking forward to my next visit

I love Korean food but can’t ever find truly vegan versions. This place has it all… huge selection of various different types of dishes and all of them are delicious. The vibe is great, the staff is exceptional, and the food is fantastic. Highly recommend for anyone, even if you are not vegan/vegetarian.

An excellent restaurant for fantastic Korean food. Completely vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant.I loved the Hangawi Stone bowl for the main course meal. Vegetable dumplings were great appetizer option as well. Ginger tea is fantastic and recommend to get it. I spilled a cocktail by mistake and they were so kind to replace it and I was very impressed seeing their response. Thank you to their staff for their kind gesture. The atmosphere was great, food was fantastic and people are awesome at the restaurant. Must visit place if you love and appreciate amazing food options

This place is an incredible Korean restaurant! 🇰🇷 Hangawi offers a delicious 🤤 selection of Korean dishes. 🍽️ You can swing by during NYC 🗽 Restaurant 🍴 Week 🗓️ for a 3-course dinner and get an appetizer, entree, and dessert for $60. 💵 You can also construct the same deal by ordering from the Pre Fixe menu 📃 - definitely try the Truffle 🍄 Dumplings 🥟, Zen 🧘‍♂️ Stone 🪨 Bowl 🥣 (served very hot ♨️), and Trisome cake 🍰 (with chocolate 🍫, strawberries 🍓, and blueberries 🫐)! Service is quick ⏲️, the staff 👨‍🍳 is professional, the ambience 🎶 is great, and the place is beautifully decorated! 🛋️ Dining experience is super unique as you are required to take off your shoes 👟 before entering the dining area. I wish I came here sooner! ⏰

I’ve been here with friends and on dates. It’s super cute— low tables and low light, and you need to take your shoes off at the entrance. The portions are usually generous, except the time we went during Restaurant Week, when the portions were smaller and pricey. Overall a good experience. I’d suggest getting a reservation because it’s usually crowded for dinner.

this place was so yummy... vegan food aside. I didn't love every single thing we got, but it was a very good experience overall. the menu is a bit overwhelming and i had a bit of choice overload. I loved the sticky rice cakes! the crispy mushrooms were recommended to us... while the first few bites were good, I felt like it was really greasy. i LOVED the ambiance and sitting in the korean style tables. i would definitely come back here!

Would highly recommend coming to Hangawi if you get the chance. The ambiance is very pleasant and the service is great. We ordered the spicy baby dumplings and the rice cakes, which we would recommend getting. The crispy mushrooms were crispy and savory. We also ordered the plum tea and the shissandra chinesis tea. We both liked the shissandra chinesis tea more, but both were sweet and delightful. We ordered the noodles with matsutake, they had a very mild flavor and it was a very large quantity. Because we had lots of flavorful food beforehand, we weren't able to taste it. But if I went back and only ordered 1 thing, I would order it again. We ordered the spicy kimchi and tofu bowl. It was a nice way to end the meal. I would order it if you like kimchi.

I came here with my wife and my mother-in-law because both my mother-in-law and myself are vegetarian. This place is by far the best vegetarian dining experience after the Japanese Michelin star restaurant which was closed last year. We ordered a three-flavor pancake, fried cauliflower, plant-based bulgogi, kimchi stone bowl, and avocado stone cold. Everything was super delicious and I think it's one of the best Korean restaurants in the city (for vegetarians). The service was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and mixed with a little bit of Korean traditional colors and decorations. However, I wasn't impressed by the cocktail (I had reincarnation), compared to how good the food was. The big surprise that night - they do something different for the birthday song! Please do let them know if any of you are celebrating your birthday!!!

One of the best vegan restaurant I ever visit . Starting with beautiful design and unique experience of traditional Japanese sitting . The service is wonderful! The food is beyond expectations.Tempura boat and avocado bowl are my favourite. The desert tasting plate is great possibility to try all at once :) All the food is super tasty, cocktails and teas as well . Been there 3 times already. Definitely recommend for everyone to try .

Most people would assume Korean restaurant to provide a meat filled barbecue experience. To have a restaurant that is completely vegan and with so many flavorful options is unique. On top of that this restaurant features a visual treat with colors and lighting. You remove your shoes and when you think you're going to sit on the floor, there is a surprise hole on the floor for your legs to rest. The food was very unique with a Korean root called todok and the hot stone rice with todok was my favorite. The service was very attentive and helpful to navigate the menu.

Very unique dining experience. From when you first walk in, the staff is attentive and assists you to your table after confirming COVID VACCINATION status. You must take your shoes off before entering the main dining area. Food is delicious. Enjoyed my avocado stone bowl. The vegetable dumplings left a little more to be desired. Food is quite salty and I believe I have met my weekly sodium allotment from just one meal. Wish the portion sizes were bigger because I could easily eat two entrees and still feel hungry.

When you come inside you take off your shoes. You're seated at these comfortable low intimate tables. I wanted to try everything on the menu. The cocktails were good with suju, try the Lychee Mojito (sweet) or Purple Lotus Tea Martini. (Not that strong but tasty). Highly recommend choosing an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The recommendations I asked for from our server were on par. Everything he recommended was 10/10.

Unique Korean dining experience. You wouldn't even believe there isn't any meat in the dishes. Beautiful presentation and ambiance at this place add to the cultural experience that is having dinner at Hangawi. Must do things for vegetarians (or anyone in fact) in NYC.

Great time overall. slightly on the expensive side, really friendly staff, hard to get a seat without reservation. Make sure to call beforehand. Food was on point! Really enjoyable. Although the quantity isn’t much (especially for the starters) I would recommend to skip to the main course directly if you’re hungry lol.

Great selection of vegetarian food to choose from, definitely happy with that! We got some starters, green tea, lychee soda, and two different entrees. I did the mushroom sizzler which was super tasty! I felt that all the apps were just okay, the dumplings could have used some more kick. The mushroom sizzler was great. The space is definitely tightly packed. When you go in your are seated floor level on the ground however there is leg room beneath the table. This is not the worst but my husband who is 6’4’’ was a little worried about getting up easily. Thankfully everyone else around us had finished but if the restaurant was packed it could be awkward. Also this is a shoes off restaurant, plan for that! Over all amazing atmosphere, the food was good!

I went with my non-vegetarian mom, and we both enjoyed the food! We got the vegetable fritters, black truffle dumplings , pancake platter and Zen Stone Rice Bowl. I would highly recommend the pancakes and will absolutely get them again! I liked the stone rice bowl a lot too, and the dumplings were a great dish to share. In terms of vibes, HanGawi is a cool experience. You take off your shoes when you arrive, and the seats are cushions on the ground, with openings under the tables so you can still sit with your legs hanging. The tables are kind of close together and the waitstaff may have to lean over/around you to serve food though.

We were pleasantly surprised that it was NYC Restaurant Week. We called and were able to get a reservation. The food was PHENOMENAL. My partner ate the chef’s suggested meal, but i relied on the reviews and chose the Spicy Baby Dumplings and the Spicy Mongolian Hot Pot. Both were fantastic. I could eat that every day! Our vegan desserts were out-of-this-world good, and better for us than dessert elsewhere. The staff was attentive and it was fun to be in a themed place. Our first time having Korean food, and i’m glad it was at one of the best vegetarian restaurants in NYC.

  • 5/5 Heila M. 2 years ago on Google
What a gem! First of all I loved the seating and the fact you need to take off your shoes when you arrive. The service is so attentive, kind and fast. The food is soooo good. Honestly I barely noticed the place is vegetarian just because they have such a variety of dishes and everything looks delicious (and really was) In general it really does feel like a you are in korea. Loved it.

Having found a vegetarian Korean restaurant seemed a long shot until we visited this place. Generous hospitality, seating area, and ambiance make you experience Korean culture. A very impressive menu, their freshly squeezed juices were top-notch, must try! My advice is to make a reservation in advance by phone or email since they often reach capacity.

Where to begin? Having lived in Korea for three years, I'll say: this is as good as it gets! Food is absolutely outstanding. The vegan spin on crispy pork in sweet and sour sauce (탕수육) was the showstopper for us. The set menu looked fantastic, but everything à la carte was equally appetizing. We chose the latter for time constraints. Can't wait to come back for the seasonal prix fixe.

  • 5/5 Bryan L. 2 years ago on Google
A vegan joint that celebrates vegetables instead of wasting their potential in poor imitations of meat. Hangawi is proof that it is possible to create perfect savoury flavors without the crutch of cooked meat or dairy. The four style gimbap is a triumph. The quiet, reserved ambiance invites you to give your food more dignity, and the no shoes rule gives the place a feeling of extra cleanliness. Not a fan of the slippers for the washroom, though.

  • 4/5 Jean-Sebastien B. 2 years ago on Google
This was only my second Korean restaurant in NYC and the atmosphere and authenticity as great. Service was good and straightforward. The food was less than I expected. Maybe I was lucky but I hate the same things much better several times in Korea.

Amazing vegan Korean Restaurant!! Loved the food and the ambience. It’s cozy, neat and clean with authentic style. Food was exceptionally tasty with a very welcoming staff. Highly recommend this place if you’re a vegetarian and want to try some Korean dishes!!

I had my New Year's eve dinner here. The food is amazing and everything is vegan! The vegetables are fresh and seasoned to perfection. The kimbap rolls are great, a must try. The todok hot pot was great too. The soju cocktails are good. Service is friendly and ambience is calming. All in all a great place to try and I would be returning for sure.

My husband and I ate here for the first time recently. The food was amazing, I especially loved the Korean Pancake Platter and my husband really enjoyed the Kimbap sampler. The service was so great—they really anticipated all of our needs. And the whole restaurant was so cozy and comfortable. I can’t wait to come back and try more!

By far one of the best restaurants i have been so far in nyc. Great food, great staff, great atmosphere- everything was just up to the mark. The place was very clean and had a unique concept of sitting similarly to the japanese style of dining. Everything is vegan in this restaurant. Recommend getting a reservation prior visiting this restaurant. I loved the bibimbap and its red beans ice cream. And would definitely recommend the spicy baby dumplings - though it says spicy but it was quite mild.

  • 5/5 Prachi G. 2 years ago on Google
Everything is absolutely delicious, maybe just the soup was not that good as per my taste because I don't like mushrooms. We ordered combination pancakes and combination sushi rolls, all were really good. For main course I ordered spicy rice seeing someone else's review here, absolutely loved it. A friend tried tofu steak which was very good and crispy, loved it. Some friends ordered stone rice dishes, they were also good and tasty but spicy rice cake and tofu steak was probably best. Also ordered a lychee drink, it was good. Also being a vegetarian it was a delight for me, having so many veg options, loved this place

Food was great 😌 nice Asian atmosphere Wouldn’t call it my favorite vegan place to eat in but definitely worth it 🙌 Waaaas hoping on taking my shoes off and relax, but we were seated at the regular table, which is no deal breaker since we were there for food 🍱 Oh and music is very ambient like everything meant for you to eat and relax Ordered their special stone bowl 🤤 🍲 , Korean pancakes and a mushroom soup with chili mushrooms 🍄 oh andddd their oriental lychee wine 🍷 which is surprisingly so tasty, sweet and reasonably priced 🙌 From all lychee drinks(tried soda, juice so far wine is the winner 😜) favorite dishes are mushrooms and crispy pancakes 🥞

  • 5/5 Michelle 5 months ago on Google • 6 reviews
Such a treat every time! My third time going here - my friends and I split the pancakes platter, crispy mushrooms, kimchi bibimbap, and spicy rice cakes. They used to have a black sesame cake that was amazing, but the chocolate cake was very good as well. My friends also enjoyed the teas. $50 for each of us split 3 ways. Truly worth it given how much we enjoyed each dish. My personal favorite was the spicy rice cakes (not spicy which may disappoint some, but very tasty). I’d recommend splitting dishes family style, you won’t regret the trip!

This place was cozy and with authentic seating it felt we were transported to a different country. I wanted to try Korean hot pot and bibimbap and both the dishes were amazing in presentation and the taste was beyond imagination. We like food spicy and it was the prefect spicy level. The purple lotus was not that strong but the taste was not to bad. We are definitely going here again..

Religious Experience. We had the spicy rice cake , ssam ban, and tofu kimchi hot pot. I cried multiple times during this meal . PLEASE get the Makgeolli wine - it’s incredible. This was so amazing. I love everyone who works here omg .

One of the best vegan places I have been to in NYC or elsewhere. Love the place, the seating is awesome, the aura, the ambience and the food is absolutely fantastic. The price is little on the higher side, we spent 60$ for two people Would definitely recommend one to go here

This was the first time trying Korean food and this place seemed like the perfect place to get started. Was very excited looking at the menu and the options available especially this restaurant being vegan. The ambience is just on point, the sitting is also unique where you basically have to sit on the ground. The staff is very helpful and welcoming. For food we started with the cauliflower bites which we read a lot of positive reviews about and it did not disappoint one bit. The baby dumplings were good but not as good the bites. For the entree's we had the Kimchi Stone Rice bowl, chilli mushroom and the Mongolian Hot Pot. The Kimchi Rice bowl was good but the star was the Mongolian Hot Pot. It was a spicy kimchi broth with mushrooms prepared 2 ways and veggies. The broth was extremely flavorful. For the desserts we took the mocha ice cream platter and the signature read bean ice cream. I did hear a lot of positive reviews about the desserts but it did not click for me. But overall a definite worth going for an experience.

Had the lunch prix fixe and it was fine, but didn't live up to the hype for us. The dishes seemed pretty standard and were on the light side of flavor, although the service and ambiance were excellent. Maybe we ordered the wrong things? Variations of the stone bowl fried rice, vermicelli, mushroom skillet, pancake combo platter-- but not sure we'd order any of them again, if we wound up back at this restaurant. Perhaps better to order a la carte.
