Like many others here who have cancelled their memberships - there is an experience outside of the gym waiting for you if God forbid you move away and can not use the gym anymore. I have not been to this gym in OVER ONE YEAR, after CANCELLING my membership THREE TIMES before that, and I STILL get charged for a membership. I donā€™t know if perhaps they just pass the phone around to whoever is going to be the manager that day, but each one Iā€™ve spoken to has been ineffective, and possibly just deceitful, about cancelling my membership and ending charges on a gym I no longer live in the same state as. Cancelling the credit card they charge doesnā€™t work either - they will send a collections agency to bother you and shake you down for money - money I need to live. Absolute scammy behavior from a business I used to enjoy and be proud to be a client of. I no longer recommend this gym to the large group of people I am connected with in the area. Please, please, save yourself the time and the money and find a gym that is run by professionals who are honest and competent enough to know that a cancelled gym membership does not mean you can continue charging people after you have terminated their contract. Itā€™s not this one. If you still need a NYC gym because home gyms are difficult for the type of apartments you have, church street boxing is far superior from my experience, and I have not had a single issue from them since Iā€™ve cancelled my membership with them after moving. While they may not be as equipment focused, their class plan and customer service are far superior. While this gym may be nice while youā€™re a member, itā€™s going to be an absolute pain once you leave. Maybe leaving a nasty review like this, the first I ever have done, will get them to stop STEALING from me every month. Maybe itā€™s reporting these charges as fraudulent - which they are. Maybe calling the agency that charges me on this firmā€™s behalf once a month will finally end this theft. Hopefully something will stop these charges before everybody who is being scammed decides to do something about it together. Be warned - multiple people are stating that you will be charged after you cancel - even if itā€™s three times. Manager/owner, if youā€™re reading this, please fix this reoccurring issue for everyone before it hurts your business. I genuinely enjoyed your gym while I was a member. I canā€™t see myself returning after this massive headache - even if I am somehow still paying for it.

ā€œWorst salesmen ever!ā€ I had this kid with pimples on his face at the front desk and try to sell me the subscription. And he compelled blew the sale, I was the most hot and ready lead. I came in ready to buy and I left with nothing. After an hour!!! Of him ā€œrunning the numbersā€ and ā€œchecking managementā€ then ā€œcalling the supervisorā€ he finally gave me the iPad to sign up. I was halfway done and then he took it away and called someone else and offered me a plan a didnā€™t want and how the plan I originally wanted was gone. I left in that moment and I was 30 seconds away from finishing the form and signing up. I wanted to pay in ful and upfront and even called before going to see if they had a deal. The said yes and to come in, and I left with nothing. I canā€™t believe me wouldnā€™t sell me the program. I was ready to buy and anybody could have closed me in 5 minutes. No wonder the gym has 3 stars, it all starts with the front desk.

I called to cancel my membership but the manager Carol was very abrupt in her answers and sounded like she just wanted to get the call over with. I could tell that the more questions I asked the more ticked off she sounded. And also she wasn't helpful in explaining why the membership fee still needed to be paid. The gym itself has a variety of machines and an open space which is decent. Customer service definitely needs to be better. I really wouldnā€™t recommend this gym because of this.

Back in August, I decided to join the gym before I went on vacation. While on vacation, I had an accident and hurt my back. When I returned, I put my account on hold for two months while I attended physical therapy and to give my back some time to heal. I was advised that if I needed to cancel, I had until Nov. 29 to do so and I would NOT be charged. Well, I cancelled about three weeks ago and still got charged. I spoke to Carol this morning and she is rude and very unprofessional. The owner, Richard Sam, really needs to get rid of her and fix these policies. Because I cancelled, it unfreezes my account and I got charged...really. !!!! So Retro Fitness got $150 of my money for nothing because I did not attend not one day. So Mr. Sam, if it's really your name and you are the owner, I would appreciate it if you contact me ASAP.

WORST RETRO EVER!! Everything you need in a gym but I agree with other reviews here -- the hours are absolutely TERRIBLE. Closed at 12pm on Saturday and closed all day on Sunday?! Unacceptable. It's the only Retro close to my job so I don't have much of a choice but I'm considering joining a different gym. Just can't with their hours.

No frills gym with tons of space and equipment. If you're looking for a club like experience to be a part of the 'scene', this isn't it. If you want to get a good workout in without having to feel cramped and wait for a bench, this is your place. I appreciate the industrial feel and what you get is definitely good value for what you'll pay. Staff is friendly and helpful too. One of the better Retro gyms I e been to.

Even if you are wearing headphones, the music is too loud especially on second level (basement) So be prepared to listen for their selection of vocals. If you can tolerate loud music- the gym is good

Cancelled my membership on 3/29, received a receipt from the club the same day letting me know my membership had been terminated and that I have no remaining balance. I'm now being harassed by ABC Fitness on an almost daily basis telling me my membership is still active and I have a growing past due balance. I have been trying to deal with this issues for more than 2 months and can't get a single person to help me. Was a very happy member of the club until this issue arose, and now the customer service or lack thereof is completely unacceptable and some of the worst I have experienced, including from the club itself, which I have called multiple times but no one seems to be able to help. About to lawyer up. Thanks for nothing.

Iā€™ll provide the exact same words of warning provided by one of the earlier reviewers: ā€œif you join and try to cancel, they wonā€™t actually cancel your membership and will keep charging you indefinitely.ā€ Up until the end of January 2023, I was going to Retro Fitness about 2-3 times a week fairly consistently. I decided I wanted to cancel around February 2023, so I spoke to an employee. The employee assured me I was good to go on the cancellation. I did what any normal person would and took their word for it. I admit that it was a partial blunder on my part: I didnā€™t look closely at my statements and didnā€™t get a written confirmation. Fast-forward to December 2023, I realized Retro Fitness never cancelled my membership. I went in and spoke to Mike. I told him how I had spoken to an employee and that they had told me I was good to go on the cancellation. Mike told me I was out of luck on the refund since the other employee hadnā€™t followed cancellation procedures and because I didnā€™t get a written confirmation. But here are the facts. I had been going 2-3 times every week prior to my cancellation. Once I cancelled, I had not gone a single time in the 10 months I was charged. Furthermore, I had a serious injury that required surgery and immobilized me for roughly 3 months, so there was no reason I wouldā€™ve continued my membership as they claim. Mike then asked me if I wanted to cancel, and I, of course, confirmed I wanted to cancel since they claimed I hadnā€™t cancelled previously. I didnā€™t want to make the same mistake as last time and asked for a written confirmation of my cancellation. Unsurprisingly, Mike refused to provide me a written confirmation of my cancellation at that time. He said I would have to call in the following week for the written cancellation confirmation, even though I was cancelling that day. Itā€™s not hard to guess whatā€™s potentially going on if you put two and two together. To whoever is reading, this gym is an acceptable gym to join. But, please be extra diligent when you try and cancel.

Gym is fine until you want to leave. I moved across the country and was told the only way to cancel my membership was to physically come into the location where I purchased the membership, with a signed letter. On my next trip to NY I did just that. I never received a confirmation email and they have continued to charge me for months (still being charged). Beware of this company.

I came into the location to cancel my membership and took every measure to insure all proper documentation was submitted stating that I had moved out of the state. They have continued to attempt to bill me for the last year and a half and have now sent me to collections for $300. We plan on filing suit against these fraudulent charges.

UPDATE: welp, like others, I need to cancel my membership as I'm no longer in the area. NY law put in effect states gyms must provide an easy way for members to cancel such as online, and not require in person cancelation. Retro is still requiring members to talk to the never-there manager. I'll be disputing charges and contacting a lawyer soon to discuss class action if this keeps up. The review below about the spac/staff stands, as long as you're a member, just know you can't get out. =========== Review from 2yrs ago: Nice sized gym in the basement floor. Note that this means no windows, if that's important to you. 2 floors make up this facility which is of pretty ample size, giving it a more varied and spread out feel. I mainly go off-peak, so it's never been crowded for me. Given the good variety of equipment, generally clean and maintained, I'd say this is an excellent value for money. As with every gym I've been at, needs more cable carabiners, and fewer guys who think they're strongmen but never strong enough to rerack their weights.

Hereā€™s your warning - if you join and try to cancel, they wonā€™t actually cancel your membership and will keep charging you indefinitely. Dealing with my bank now and itā€™s just a hassle for no reasonā€¦.. Furthermore the guy who works at night blasts music and dances around not working. He was the original person I asked to cancel who just didnā€™t. Edit: I was charged for two months after I canceled. Because of my review they finally actually cancelled my membership. With that said I was still only refunded for one month that I overpaid. Still wouldnā€™t recommend this place but if you do need to cancel, do it through Mike because heā€™ll actually cancel it.

I am very disappointed at this facility. I had been charged for services that I cancelled in September 2020 due to the Pandemic. However, they were still changing my account for services. When I called them, they deny that I cancelled my account. This is a form of stealing on your face. Poor communication between The Retro Fitness at NY Plaza and ABC services. This is the worst place to do business with.

Retro is a great gym. The gym being in a work neighborhood instead of a residential area makes for great times where it seems to be almost like your own private gym during the right hours. The new young staff are very friendly and are happy to be there. Mike is a generous person with his time sharing his knowledge of body building. I see there have been complaints about the temperature but I think people forget they are supposed to sweat in a gym lol.

Iā€™ve been coming here most weekdays for about 2 months. This gym has everything you need. Great selection of free weights, thereā€™s strength training racks, a functional fitness area, and so many machines that Iā€™ve only tried a third of them. The bathrooms are well kept and I always use the showers at the end of my workouts. No lines for the facilities and they have towels/shampoo/shower gel at the ready. Come and see Mike when you arrive. Heā€™s the best. No matter how rough im feeling in the morning, seeing his consistency reminds me I can make it. You just gotta show up

It's an absolute sauna in this gym. Downstairs is just awful; no idea how people workout there regularly. I normally complain about my home gym being too warm, but it's an ice box in comparison. Temperature read 76Ā°. Front desk says the building controls the temperature and they can't do anything about it. Hard to believe

This place is awesome. The worker Jimmy is awesome too, he makes awesome gamer smoothies which make my gamer muscles flex in agonizing pain making me stronger physically and mentally. However, I feel bad he has to walk to the other side of the store to get some ice for my smoothie. Pls fix that or else Iā€™ll change my review to a 1 star. thank you

I have been a member for almost 2 years now and I truly enjoy working out here. 2 floor gym with a great variety of machines to choose from, along with many cable attachments. Both floors are always clean and organized, machines are well spaced out and always available.

I have been coming to this gym for about two years now. I love the fact that the team is very friendly and helpful when needed. They have a variety of equipment to choose from I only wish that people that workout would take the weights off the machines when done. The trainers there are awesome and know exactly what they are doing to get you where you want to be.

I've only been to two Retro Fitness locations (here and Hoboken), but this gym is by far the nicer of the two. The staff seem quite friendly, the downstairs is very spacious with plenty of lifting equipment, and the gym is not crowded in the morning (around 8:30am to 9:30am), which is fantastic for someone like me who wants to work out before heading to the office. I think the lack of crowds may be partially due to people still not coming into the office because of Covid, so perhaps that could change in the future. But for now, this gym is very solid, especially for its price.

SO THEIR ARE A COUPLE CATEGORIES, I PUT EVERY ESTABLISHMENT IN, SUCH AS , CLEANLINESS, AMBIANCE, CUSTOMER SERVICE,, IT WAS CLEAN, YOU DEFINITELY GET A RETRO FEEL FOR IT BECAUSE SPACE THEY USED TO BUILD THIS GYM ,FEELS LIKE THE 1980'S, THE STRETCH AREA WAS SURPRISINGLY BIG ENOUGH, THEY HAD A COUPLE OF EXCLUSIVE EQUIPMENT IN THEIR YOU CANT FIND TO MAN PLACES THAT WAS LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT, THE AMBIANCE WAS LIKE BEING AT WORK, SO STRAIGHT DOWN TO BUSINESS, THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS JUST NICE, IM PRETTY SURE THEY DONT GET A BUNCH OF LIVELY CUSTOMERS ON WHITEHALL STREET. SO DEPENDING ON WHAT TYPE OF QUALITY YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, IF IT IS GREAT EQUIPMENT , AND SPACE TO WORK OUT THIS IS DEFINITELY THE PLACE... IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AMBIANCE LIVELY PEOPLE, OR BE IN A TOP OF THE LINE WORKOUT SPACE THIS IS NOT THE PLACE... THE BATHROOMS NEED REMODELING, BUT OVERALL, YESS I WOULD COME BACK TO THIS GYM... AND TURN A TOAD INTO A PRINCE..

I have been going to this gym for years and it is a well maintained franchise (you have to set your expectations based on that). The good thing is that they have free weights and the fees are reasonable. The manager Carol is always friendly and accommodating as is the staff in general. It is kept very clean. However, as is typical for this franchise they seem to have to play music (not a bad selection), but my only complaint is it can be a bit loud and unnecessary since most people wear headphones. Another issue with this club is it is very hot in the summer at times (a common issue with Retro Fitness--most likely having to do with the franchise rules). If they could add another station with bumper plates and another cage that would be great as I never use Smith racks.

I would much rather take a 25 minute subway ride downtown and work out here than go to the 49th St Queens location. Its like a Walmart inside the 49th st gym ( it's Packed no matter what time I have gone ) Thanks for the warm welcome Jimmy,

Huge space, two floors, with a big variety in equipment. Great price and kept clean. Honestly, all I need in a gym! Spoke to one of the personal trainers at length about my goals and am getting started with a tailored plan at a pretty reasonable price. I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of training sessions when they told me. I get my daily workout smoothies from the front desk there too before going into work. Nice people, always willing to help when I go them. The one thing Iā€™d improve is to have more locations so I can use the membership in the Bronx!

It seemed that one employee in Retrofitness gym in Battery Park didn't appreciate my previous comment and made a sly remark with a dubious tone trying to get my attention. The owner just stood there. Then when I went downstairs and was working out at least 4 patrons tried to make sly remarks and get my attention. I brushed one off and ignored the other three as if they were children. They actually seemed to be lifting like children by the amount of weight they were using, lol. Seems like the employee is getting creepier every time I visit the gym. He seems to be subtle and indirect but extremely disturbed in his attempts to distract. I suggest we all pray for him but give him no further energy. It's like a child doing anything to get attention. Let us all pray brethren.
