Josh and the folks at Clockwork are refreshingly warm people who know their bjj absurdly well. They are amazing teachers of technique, super talented practitioners, AND humble, encouraging, and kind to their students. I am a fourth degree adult female brown belt from LA so was a visitor to Clockwork for six weeks while in NY for work. I came to Clockwork via a friend's glowing recommendation. I'm hopeful for an excuse to go back to NY just so I can train with them again! I was challenged and well taken care of at the same time. I had a blast every time I trained with them. At Clockwork, the instruction was thorough and questions were answered patiently and with great detail. The facility was clean and safe, well lit, spacious, and equipped with showers, lockers, and restrooms for men and women. This is especially important when doing contact training like bjj. The response time for inquiries about classes was same day. Anytime I attended class, the students seemed very happy to be there. It was a generous and welcoming community. I am very grateful to Josh and everyone at Clockwork. Go check them out!

If you’re looking for a place to learn jiu jitsu, you have struck gold. The instruction is world class, but the real deal sealer is the atmosphere. You can train hard, feel happy, and make great friends all in this one, inimitable place. This is a true nonpareil of the martial arts community.

Took my sis there who had never done BJJ before and I’m relatively new, found everyone super welcoming and helpful. Easy to get involved at your own pace for both of us and clearly really knowledgeable instructors. Awesome experience, will be back!!!

Visited the new Rockaway location on its opening day, visiting from Seattle. A lot of the Manhattan people were there, all of them were very sweet killers w/ great technique. I can’t wait to come back!

This review is a long time coming. After being out of Jiu-Jitsu for several years as a Blue belt and being 43 years old and 40+ lbs overweight I was determine to take control of my life and fitness. I was also a father of a young toddler so I didn’t want to be a fat dad. In January 2019 I came into Clockwork and met Josh and the rest of the team and they immediately made me feel really comfortable right from the start. The community was super friendly and the vibe really matched my personality. I started slowly and once I started becoming more conditioned I was eventually taking 4 class / week. The quality of instruction is what draws you in but it’s the community that keeps you there. Fast forward to today, I’m a Purple belt, in the best shape of my life and an active Jiu-Jitsu competitor. Of course this new found confidence permeates to all aspects of my life. This made me a better father, husband, son, and friend. So if you are thinking of trying Jiu-Jitsu come check us out. You won’t regret it! See you on the mats!

I have only been going here a few weeks, but I am already really impressed with the space. All of the people were super friendly on my first visit, the space was wide and clean, and one girl even offered to help me train if I had any trouble. Many of the bjj gyms I’ve been to in the past have been really sink-or-swim type of environment which I find really intimidating, so I really appreciate that this gym works hard to be accessible to newcomers like me, who have little background experience in wrestling or jiu-jitsu. They even have class only for white belts, as well as private instruction, which I haven’t seen at any other Bjj gym. The rates can be a little high, but I really don’t mind since the space is positive, and the instructors are high-quality.

Dropped in here to get some mat time while visiting NYC for work. It was awesome. I attended a mixed Gi class and a No-Gi class. Can’t say enough about the teaching and generosity of the instructors and other members. They made a relatively inexperienced white belt feel at home and comfortable. Highly recommend for all skill levels.

I've been training at Clockwork for about 6 months. I did trial classes at about three other schools before choosing to train here. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's such an easy environment to learn and grow. It's the type of gym I can see myself still training at a decade from now. The instructors are meticulous about their craft, very approachable, and inspire a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The white belt classes are perfectly suited for complete beginners. Jiu-jitsu can be a lot to take in at first, and I think many people quit early simply because they get overwhelmed and have no idea how to digest it all. The white belt classes do a great job of introducing you to the sport by only focusing on two techniques each week. That way you can really take your time to explore the techniques and concepts before moving on to the advanced classes. I highly recommend this place to practitioners of all levels.

I had been procrastinating on trying out BJJ for years because honestly I was nervous AF. I checked out all the gyms in the area and landed at Clockwork because it was the only one that had a white belt bootcamp designed for people with zero experience. It's also super clean. BJJ is insanely difficult, but everyone in this community is so genuinely kind and eager to help you learn. It's so much fun, literally my only regret is not starting sooner! If you've ever been curious, pop in for a free trial class 🤘

Clockwork Jiu Jitsu is one of the most fun and exciting environments to train in, for all skill levels. My last year at clockwork has been one of the most enjoyable years of my life and I will be a lifelong visitor of this gym. Josh and Kyle are both extraordinary coaches, and even better people. If you’re interested in checking out this incredible sport, give this gym a try.

Started training at Clockwork after moving to NYC 2 years ago. I got my blue belt here from Josh and left this past February because of commute (I moved). I dont think I can encapsulate my experience here into words, but this gym is the reason I’m still doing this sport and will continue to do so for years to come. With the amount of people that are in the gym, Josh somehow still manages to know me by name, cares for my progress, and checks up on me when I missed mat time - and the best part, this is true for every instructor at Clockwork. I’ve met and trained with amazing people here and the culture that this place cultivated is second to none.

Super welcoming environment for beginners! I'm in the Intro to Jujitsu class and it's very informative, open and really fun! Everyone is really sweet and encouraging--there are no expectations for certain levels of athleticism or prior knowledge, they really do a great job of teaching you what you should know to be safe and effective. The facility is clean and has a good amount of space--there are usually two full classes running at the same time with space to walk around. They're also queer friendly, even if it's not advertised. (for reference, I'm a trans man, and they're super respectful and honestly don't care but in like the best way possible). There's even a non-gender conforming/AFAB/female group that trains together there too! I know it's hard for some queer people to find a welcoming sports community but at Clockwork, it's a really great environment!

This place is excellent. A friend suggested I drop in while I was recently back in NYC - and I'm so glad I went. Clockwork was absolutely the most welcoming gym I've ever been to. The vibe is so relaxed, yet everyone trains hard and the skill level of the coaching is above and beyond. Took a class with Professor Josh and his instructions were perfectly detailed, and the drilling vs sparring was the right balance. This place is no frills, real jiu jitsu. These guys are dedicated to the art and it shows in the community they've built. If you're thinking about stopping in, do it. You'll thank yourself after. I can't wait to go back!

Best place to practice bjj in the city. Josh has cultivated a tremendous culture here and it’s by far my favorite place to train.

How pathetic. To get in touch with them "faster" you must fill out a form instead of calling on the phone?

I have been training bjj for about 10 years and after moving to NYC I needed to find a new place to train. After doing a lot of research and reading reviews clockwork checked all the boxes. The atmosphere and instruction are top notch. If you're looking for a high level gym that also passes all the vibe checks this is where you want to be.

I have appreciated the environment at Clockwork where I have felt free to carve out my own individuality as a grappler and BJJ practitioner. I think in a world full of opinions, one can get caught up with what's popular, but at Clockwork, you get to be you and that's refreshing. There's a place for everyone. The women are extremely welcoming and open to newcomers to the sport. Everyone seems to recognize the importance of seeing progress more than what happens on the mat. That's truly invaluable for the haul of training in such a physically and demanding sport.

Awesome spot! Really positive community with instructors who take a genuine interest in your life and well-being, both on and off the mat. Loved the people I met and the level of competition I was exposed to, I learned a lot in a short amount of time. Also was really flexible with when to start/stop/pause my membership.

I have been training at Clockwork for about 6-7 months now and I absolutely love everything about this gym. Josh, the head instructor, is an amazing guy and makes you feel like you are part of the family the second you walk in the door. He is also much better at remembering names than I will ever be. Afraid someone is going to make fun of you? Not going to happen. Come as you are and you will be welcomed with open arms, regardless of your background. "Should I get in shape before starting jiu-jitsu?" Nope! Clockwork doesn't have insane warm-ups and the tempo is very much "do what you are comfortable with." Training jiu-jitsu is the best way to get in shape for jiu-jitsu. :-) What I have never seen tolerated at Clockwork: being mean to others, being too rough with others, and overall being a less-than-nice human. If you decide to train at Clockwork, GREAT! If you try Clockwork and decide it's not the gym for you, that's OK, too! :-) -- READ BELOW THE LINE BREAK FOR MY ORIGINAL REVIEW -- I tried a BJJ class several months back and I really enjoyed it. Kyle Jackson was instructing the class and he made it very clear that we were there to have fun and not to worry about getting everything right on the first try. The welcoming atmosphere is fantastic for people who are new to BJJ and are nervous about attending their first class. Everyone was super nice and it was a fantastic class. My pet got sick so I wasn't able to sign up and actually ended up finding a school that suited me better as they offer Muay Thai and BJJ, but I highly recommend checking out this school if you are looking for an awesome place to train BJJ!

👍👍 It is an amazing stay for people that really just need a bed for the night in the middle of New York. We stayed for a week and first of all the location is unbeatable. Right next to central park and even in a 20 minutes walk distance to time square. I absolutely loved the immense gym. Alone for the...

🫤 Very disappointed with the gym's new timing. I chose PF over Blink Fitness although it was a little far away from my place because it would be open 24 hours and it really helps people who work different schedules. Remember, not everyone works 9-5. The 24 hour policy was what made PF unique and stand...
