If you want to practice somewhere that has deep reverence and respect for the teachings of yoga and a strong and welcoming community, then come to the Shala. Barbara and Kristen and all of the teachers are incredibly kind, attentive and knowledgeable. I'm so grateful for this place.

My favorite yoga place, and so glad that they have online classes now. I moved away from NYC years ago and couldn't find a solid yoga studio to continue the practice that i developed here. But ever since the pandemic, I've been lucky to be able to go back to The Shala Yoga (virtually)

I have been going to The Shala for three years, consistently, and if it's up to me I will be going for the rest of my life! I think of it as Ashtanga-influenced Vinyasa. They are the perfect amount of challenging (enough to feel the effects on the body, but also calming and enjoyable). The vibe is welcoming, clean, and homey. Barbara has the vibe of a solidly good, thoughtful, caring human being and is a fantastic teacher. Each teacher does it a little differently, but they still have the consistency in style you'd look for in a studio. I look forward to Ashley's Saturday class all week. I travel a lot and when I do I visit studios all over the country, and The Shala is still my favorite.

I've been going to the Shala since 2012. The classes are Ashtanga influenced Vinyasa flow which provides a fantastic workout for the body. And the vibe is welcoming and warm. Barbara and Kristin have built something truly special at the Shala.

I've been going to The Shala for over a decade -- both the Union Square and the Fort Green studios. I've tried yoga studios all over NY and much of the world, and The Shala is unmatched. Even the most senior teachers remain students of the practice and bring their learning and discovery to each class. There is always something new to learn. The practice is rigorous but balanced. And every time I walk into the studio I feel like I'm going home. I can't recommend The Shala enough.

I stumbled upon The Shala 15 years ago and have been practicing here ever since. The founders, Barbara and Kristen, and all of the studio's teachers, embody a unique dedication, knowledge, and compassion for their students that is unparalleled. Having practiced yoga worldwide, and I feel lucky and immensely grateful to always return to The Shala's grounding space and community.

The Shala stands out as one of the very best studios in New York. I have been practicing at their Union Square studio for more than 10 years, and I recently began practicing at Fort Greene as well. They offer a wide variety of classes from Yoga Fundamentals to Intermediate/Advanced Vinyasa to Mysore Astanga. Besides the excellent teachers, both studios are homey and welcoming and feel like a refuge from the busy streets right outside. It doesn’t take long to become part of the warm community that The Shala provides.

Love The Shala! The Mysore and Vinyasa classes are exceptional. The teachers are very knowledgeable, kind, and helpful and the studio is spotless and simple. Because of the above, I took a 200 hour Teacher Training at The Shala as well and that was Awesome! 5 star in my opinion.

The Shala has been my home for yoga for over a decade and the community has become my family. It's not clicky in any way, nor does it promote its teachers as gurus. Instead, they focus on the breath in an ashtanga and ashtanga variations asana practice, and encourage students of all levels. The teachers are knowledgeable, kind and care about creating a community.

This is a gem of a yoga studio. I've practiced at both their union square and fort greene locations. You'll find high quality instruction in a beautiful and welcoming environment without pretension or flashiness. Great for beginners and serious practitioners. It can be hard to find ashtanga style classes and the shala is where it is at!
