This was a big disappointment. I thought the tickets were kind of expensive but I went with it cause hey, it's New York. Half the exhibits were out of order or not working! Totally not worth it. We spent under an hour there. I found some of the workers to be very intense, bordering on rude. All the pictures I posted are of things that were broken.

This is our nation's only interactive museum dedicated to mathematics - and runs mostly on volunteers and donations in the heart of NYC. For that alone they get 5 stars. Great interactive exhibition tribute to math. Lots of activities, puzzles, experiences that all have some math element to them, like tricycles with square wheels, floor puzzles, fractal interactive video, a probability ball drop, etc. It's very much like a science center but for mathematics. Digital touchscreens with detailed explanations and mathematicians alongside most experiences. "Employees" (mostly local students) are super friendly and helpful. They have a small gift shop with math items. This place has a free time slot once a month at least where you can enjoy the place for free. Some of the activities are not working anymore or shut down. Some of the digital touchscreens are sluggish or unresponsive. It's also a little tight and should be expanded. Feels like it could use some TLC in general. I hope they are getting enough grant money from organizations like MSRI and the NSF. If not, those and similar organizations need to prop it up. Despite these issues, it was packed when we went and everyone seemed engrossed and interested. It's a fantastic, effective commercial for mathematics! I hope the next time I come to NYC, it's even bigger and better. Once improved, they should do more advertising and scheduling to bring more people in. Being in NYC, they have the ability to reach a wide demographic.

Ask questions! The museum is great, lots of things to do for both kids and adults. If you’re into the deeper meanings behind the exhibits, talk to the staff! Every person I talked to was incredibly friendly, and explained the math behind each exhibit really well. Special thanks to David, who was especially friendly, and super enthusiastic about explaining the proof behind the “Sixth Sense” game. If you’re planning on visiting, be sure to buy tickets beforehand (it’s a lot easier than the machines) and bring your COVID-19 vaccination card, or they’ll make you download an app and add a photo, which is tedious.

Small but packed with brain gymnastics for young and adults. $25/pp and $20/child. No parking and best to walk there. Highly recommend this museum! Plus your patronage goes straight into non-for -profit contribution. Learning + educational + tax deductible. Win-win✨👌🏽

This museum has a series of unique exhibits that deal with basic and not so basic concepts of math and physics. The museum is for older children but my five year old grandson has been a regular attendee at the museum for several years now. My two year was there the last time I was there and enjoyed it more than I thought she would. I recommend people of all ages, with kids of all ages go to the museum. Weather or not you think your a math person, you will enjoy it.

We spent a few hours here and my girls really enjoyed it. I love exposing them to different types of museums. We would definitely come and it wound be a different experience then. Even my 19 year old loved it. We spent some time in the puzzle area and we all enjoyed it. I rated it four stars because several exhibits were not working.

Sorry guys but the idea of a maths museum was brilliant but the way it has been taken over was awful. It was our 75 dollars worst paid in 10 days trip in Manhattan. Shape it so everyone has opportunity to enjoy, learn and spend more than 15’ there. 20% of them are not working so fix them all and good luck. & again I repeat: idea is amazing

A gem! A great idea, with great content. It requires at least a half-day to do justice to the material and admission fee. It could use more, enthusiastic staff & possibly some simple printed displays to explain the science and maths to visitors (especially children), otherwise reliant on significant parental input. Somewhat disappointing that many (20% of) exhibits were not working - but still plenty to inspire!

I think the best thing I can say is that the museum was mildly interesting. Beyond that? It was a huge disappointment. The exhibits that worked seemed incomplete, and a good 30% were closed. There were weird incongruities, ex instructions referring to different color objects than existed, and nonfunctional buttons abounded. There wasn't even a consistent target demographic. Exhibits that were approachable to children had no added value for adults, and those that were more advanced didn't have much that would engage a younger audience. This is a first, and I don't say it lightly, but if they offered refunds I would have taken them up on it. I left this museum thinking, sure, but entirely of the missed opportunity. --- As an aside for those that so choose to go, the museum is tiny. I believe I saw it indicates as an hour to two to visit. That's only plausible if one is explaining every exhibit to a toddler of prodigal patience. I'd expect nearly all visits to be under an hour.

This was a neat museum, but also a bit smaller than I expected. My son is in third grade and about half of exhibits were just above his age, so definitely geared more for upper elementary to middle school. Still enjoyed though.

What a fun place. Granddaughter described it as more STEM than math. I’m not sure she realized that math unlikes STEM. The staff was very helpful and explained the math behind the activities. It was very hands on with lots to do. Wehadfun and wanted to stay longer but we had a train to catch.

Lots of fun, interactive, and educational exhibits. Some simple concepts and some with complex math underpinnings. The majority of visitors are parents with children let loose, so be prepared for the general chaos of attempting to seriously interact with any particular exhibit.

Great place for kids to get interested about math. Only downside is some of the displays where broken or were wear down. But great concept and not expensive at all.

Fun place for kids to make math a bit more tangible and enjoyable. Also great for adults who want to play a bit and admire the engineering of the exhibits. Alas, the one I had really hoped was working was not. Attached photo of an M-209 Hagelin machine -- the Allied rough equivalent of the German Enigma. Museum done well with friendly docents who are mostly recent graduates.

There is literally nothing for parents, still they made us pay 52$….few attractions were closed, I don’t get it. Also, after more than 2 years through the pandemic they still want to check vaccination docs and IDs! In my opinion this museum is expensive and not worth it.

The art exhibit by Anton Bakker was amazing. My 2 sons (9 & 12) enjoyed the experiences in the museum, such as riding a bike with square wheels on a surface that makes the ride smooth. Each staff member we encountered was enthusiastic about math and extremely helpful.

Many of the exhibitions are broken or not functioning properly, and most of them are for young kids, rather than being a medium for the whole family. It doesn't worth the entrance fee in my opinion.

My wife and I absolutely loved this museum! It is our favourite in New York. I must add that she is a maths lecturer and I am an engineer. The museum is packed with interactive displays and educational areas. A must for kids and basically anyone with an enquisitive mind.

It has a bunch of activities that make math fun. When I started the puzzle in the pic, someone stood by me said she was a high school teacher and knew it was impossible to fit all the pieces in the box. I made it.

Really awesome museum. The staff are super-friendly and helpful. Lots of interactive displays that remind you how beautiful math is. Only reason to dock a star was that quite a few exhibits were down when we went, which is unfortunate. Those that were working were fun and interesting. My son could have spent all day on the puzzles!

One of the most interesting places in NY. It is not only for mathematicians. Adults and children can find a lot of amazing exhibits. Helpful crew. The gift shop with rare products.

I've to say that I was expecting more than what we saw. 30% of the stands were out of order. And for the rest, it was too high level. Probably also to fit very young audiences too. The students there were more talking to each others or on their phones than supporting visitors. For me it was not worth the price of the tickets. The toilet is clean.

My kids love the National Museum of Mathematics. The entrance was off E 26th facing the park side. Their bathrooms were well maintained and the sink was in pentagon shape, which was kind of fun for everyone. There were a lot of activities for kids and adults. The gift shop at the front of the museum had a lot of fun toys for the kids to take a look at and to get for friends’ birthday parties. There is also a WholeFoods market nearby for lunch after a morning of fun activities in the museum and apply some of the math the kids learned. Highly recommend it for mathematical kids. :)

Super fun place for both kids and adults. There are lots of interactive things to do and always nice to combine theory with practice. If you are someone into maths and want to learn something interesting about maths this is the place!

The employees were great and helped guide us through the museum. There are tons of interactive exhibits and I would be really amazing for kids. It was fun for us 25 year olds. They have more artsy math exhibits as well as the interactive. It was just a solid fun time.

2 floors of interactive stations. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was not at all busy and there were no lines for any of the stations. A few of the stations were not working. Most exhibits are for kids around 5 to 12, I'd say, but everyone can appreciate the math.

Great place to bring kids to learn about math. All the exhibits are interactive and you will be able to take advantage of ASTC reciprocity.

This was an unexpected gem in the city. One of my kids even said, "I get it, it's a bunch of games and puzzles, but you use math to do them." It's a great mix of fun and games matched with learning. There are puzzles of all difficulty levels, some easy enough for kids and many tough enough to stump adults.

great place for everyone! so many fun things to do that are educational without the kids realizing it. Even the sink in the bathroom was math related! Wish we got to experience all of the exhibits, several were closed.

This is an excellent place for kids to explore and adults to pretend they are smart enough to understand the mathematical concepts shared by the knowledgeable and very helpful staff. If you are into museums and science, I highly recommend you visit MoMath!

Fun place! You will see a lot of children there, but there are activities for all ages. The staff is friendly and accommodating and the price ($26) is reasonable compared to other museums in New York. The bottom floor is the better part of the museum, with puzzles and fun activities to complete.

Tons of cool exhibits, fun for kids but also older math geeks! The displays go into variable levels of depth so you can see a short proof of why one of the exhibits works, for example. Can be done in 1-2 hrs.

I would recommend this to anyone, no matter your age or background with mathematics. There's a ton of fun things to do and intuitive explanations for the math behind each attraction. I even got to geek out with some of the employees while going through the museum! Excellent experience overall.

This was a cool museum, but it would be great if the exhibits actually worked. Several (I'd say 25%) either didn't work or didn't work well. It was anticlimactic. I would recommend going, but the whole experience would improve if they services their exhibits. The gift shop had cool stuff, and there were really cool puzzles to solve in the lower level that I really enjoyed.

Fun and challenging interactive activities for kids and adults. Staff is helpful one explaining and assisting with activities. Good place to spend a couple of hours working out the brain.

The exhibits were very interesting and fun… so much to do, the kids had a blast and learned a lot at the same time. We went on a free play day but I definitely believe it’s worth the normal fee since there is so much to do and see.

Too expensive for a family visit. Most of the games and stations are for kids, it is not particularly huge. Would be helpful if someone could explain the math concept to the kids. Some stations are broken. For $80 for a family of 4, it is max 1.5-2 hr fun. A bigger science museum is probably a better bet for improving your kids’ IQs.

  • 4/5 Mikelle H. 2 years ago on Google
Some really cool stuff here! A little pricey but definitely fun to go once with your kids if they like math. We spent 2 hours and didn’t get to even see everything. Lots of things to do. It was extra special when the workers would help explain the different exhibits and how they work. Just wish there were a few more workers to help with that especially on the bottom level. There were times when we didn’t know how to use things or do things and it became frustrating. A few things were broken or closed.

Wonderful museum full of hands-on activities for kids! The math concepts are advanced but the kids have so much fun playing. Even if the concepts are over their head, they are now associating math with fun and play :)

We loved this museum!! it was so engaging for my four year old and also 14 year old friend. so it appeals to many levels of understanding and all ages. I geeked out about the floor levels, the basement is labeled as -1 on the elevator and stairs, and ground level is zero. I tried to explain negative numbers to my kids and this is a very concrete example that makes sense! love it! the sinks are pentagons!!!!! so unique! the square bike is so fun and we loved all the wooden puzzles and interactive, hands on games. the monkey, dino, and rabbit magnet puzzles were really interesting! We have a travel membership to the Kern County Museum in California and it has ASTC reciprocity. We were welcomed and the check in process with our membership was really simple.

Engaging, enriching, and exciting to see all the mathematical concepts brought to life through interactive exhibits. If speedy tourism is your thing, then 1 hour should do but if you relax and read a few explanations as well as play with exhibits spending 2 hours or more is easy. No food inside but plenty of options nearby. Whole Foods a couple blocks north offers lots of tasty and healthy options in their prepared food section to eat inside at the second floor tables.

The museum of mathematics is a very nice place to spend an afternoon with your family. There are activities for kids of every age from 4 to 16 years. The only disappointing point was that many games/activities were broken or out of service, i think that once you pay a quite expensive ticket you expect to find a large selection of options and all the game working. The staff that work there are very nice and helpful.

Lots of really neat stuff for kids of all ages to explore. Interesting and engaging... I didn't even know for the first hour there's a whole nother area downstairs. Only drawbacks: they close early, and some of their exhibits were broken. Make sure to bring your own snacks

Kids were complaining I was taking them to "a museum for MATH!" We ended up being there for hours. The kids were totally engaged and had a blast. It is a highlight for kids in New York for sure.
