It is absolutely unacceptable to charge one hundred and eighty dollars for a single cabin room when the hotel is under renovation and there are dust cloths every where, sheets hanging from the ceiling to close off the hallway due to construction. Construction started at 7am then you have to walk down a dusty, noisy, sheet covered construction site hallway to get showered or go for a pee. I’ve stayed here before and it’s fine, but I just got absolutely ripped off. See pictures, that was my view when the elevator opened to my floor, and hallway of my room view.

The Jane is probably the most dignified and distinguished cheap hotel in the world. I've stayed here dozens of times and have sent friends and family to stay at the Jane many more. It's a boutique hotel. I suggest checking their website and familiarizing yourself with the room options before booking. The building is old, the prices are low, the rooms are small and the West Side Highway and Park can be as breathtaking and charming as it is noisy. I find it's old world charm very comfortable as I appreciate it solid construction and function over space and newness. Chris, the manager goes above and beyond to be sure that his staff is as courteous and trained in the niceties of hospitality as you might experience at one of the famous world class hotels along Central Park but at a fraction of the price.

It seems that at one point, the Jane was a historic, affordable hidden treasure within Manhattan. As with most good things, it has been ruined in the name of progress. The website is a complete misrepresentation of the current state, and it is sad the beautiful architecture of the ballroom and all other public spaces has been demolished. I chose to stay there because of the pictures and the history, but it is nothing but construction tarp and noise. The only thing accurate on the website is the picture of the lobby and the bedroom. The staff and location are incredible, but you are getting nothing more than a bed and a shared bathroom for $200. Be warned, construction noise begins around 7:00am.

The JANE HOTEL is NoT what it used to be😭It was charming, safe, always a good restaurant & most importantly the Staff & Management were Impeccable and welcoming & Truthful !!. THIS IS NOT THE CASE ANY LONGER! First of all the Hotel is under a 2 year or longer reconstruction! the prices have gone up $100 a night at least!!! & DURING CONSTRUCTION, and they DO NOT WARN YOU UNTIL YOU CHECK IN! Too LATE!! I can understand raising the prices in a year or two after construction is completed!! However, NEVER DURING CONSTRUCTION, NOISE & OBSTACLES & rude workman everywhere!! Does not feel safe. The management has completely changed and do not respond to your inquiries or even to emails ??¿¿ REALLY? I have been coming to The Jane Hotel for 12 years or more! Basically same staff & management. Always helpful, kind and welcoming ~ which to me is important as a solo traveller! I always have had great rapport with everyone. It has always felt like coming home! THIS IS NOT THE CASE ANY LONGER!!! The rooms WERE adequate but perfectly clean. The shared bathrooms always had excessive hot water and were cleaned several times a day. $700 for 3 nights. Their website which i book from mentions NO CONSTRUCTION ~ which is odd that they do not warn you before booking. Also major construction across the street! Jolly good Time (NOT) !! I am not sure if the hotel was bought by another company and old management left or were fired, thinking it is my second thought! Sadly i WILL NOT EVER BE RETURNING TO THIS ONCE MAGICAL ICONIC HOTEL! There are plenty of great Hotels in NY for the same price and for sure better than what has sadly happened to The Jane. THE END🕳️

I got the small room, and it was small. Basically not much more than a bed. I wish I could say the bed was comfortable, but mine was not. Shared bathrooms and one shower for everyone on the floor. This did not create a problem if you aren’t showering during prime time. The location was excellent. The service was OK. If you’re just looking for a relatively “inexpensive” place to sleep in New York, this would be a good option. I’ll likely be back. But don’t expect anything fancy. Having said that, they have a pretty good night club on Friday and Saturday nights. Good option if you’re on a budget.

I was at The Jane Hotel for 3 days a week ago for a sentimental return to New York. This may not be a hotel for discriminating guests who clamor for hotel chains - but to my taste, it was great and I will stay there again. It was impeccably clean, the front desk (always occupied) was very helpful when it came to printing out my airline paperwork. They were great. It was a shame that the restaurant was closed after the pandemic - but hey! Can we not forgive that? The hotels in NYC have had a very difficult time! It's wonderful that rooms are available again - and what rooms! Like an ocean liner, lovely old wood paneling & details - you really feel like you are in Old New York - because you ARE! Lovely quality linens, bathrobe & slippers provided, and re: restaurant, the staff sent me to the Bus Stop Café on Hudson, another real find. As a woman travelling alone, I felt completely safe.

The location of this place is fine. It's the staff that don't tell you how to get out once you've checked in or the fact that it's nonrefundable and they wait until you've paid to tell you about the messy and confusing construction. I didn't feel safe, there were no directions on how to get out and if you went missing in that building, no one would know until they traced your debit card. Would not recommend.

Worst hotel experience in NYC by far. First, I booked a 3 night stay and they never disclosed they were doing a full renovation in the building, closing most (if not all) the public areas including the bar and the rooftop. Second, I knew that the rooms were tiny, but in my room the AC was broken and the heating system was on 90% of the time, so my room was literally a boiler. I request a room change but there didn’t want to even having some free rooms in my floor. Also the fire alarm sounded 3 times during my stay, probably because of the construction stuff. Last, when I asked for a compensation for all these problems above, they just said the reservation was not refundable. Make yourself a favor and stay away from this people.

The Jane Hotel is a delightful historic hotel in West Greenwich Village. Stepping into the foyer was like stepping back in time to the early 1900s. The hotel room was small but lovely. I loved the woodwork in the room, and the feeling of being in a cabin on an old ship. The bathrooms were very nice. The hotel and room were very clean. The roof top bar has an amazing view of the river and the city lights. A nice extra touch was that some of the reception and housekeeping staff wore uniforms of early 1900s hotel staff. The hotel was convenient to the Metro and buses. It was close to an amazing selection of restaurants. The riverside park and walk across the street were lovely. It was great value for the price. I stayed here for three nights in September. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very safe. I would stay here again.

The location of the Jane Hotel is great and it's a very reasonably priced hotel for the area. I loved being near the Whitney and the Highline and being in the village. When staying at the Jane Hotel there was construction going on. It didn't really impact the experience overall. We stayed in one of the double rooms with a bunk bed and shared bathroom. As others have said, the bathroom was clean and the rooms were quiet. So it served it's purpose as offering a place to sleep in an amazing neighborhood.

First of all, the hotel is under construction. Secondly and this is important: it's really a hostel, not a hotel. Very small rooms. Some with bunk beds offer the chance to save money. If you're willing to put up with shared bath and extremely tight accommodations. I suspect things will improve over time as the renovations are complete and as management continues. Personally, I was glad to get a room in my price range and so it worked out but others in my traveling party were disappointed with the bare bone accommodations.

It's a shame that the poor reviews for the club/bar are dragging down the overall rating of this place, because I thought the hotel was very charming for a one or 2 night accommodation... If you look at the plethora of photos, you'll know what to expect. Yes, rooms are small and bathrooms are shared (unless you get a suite). However, when I stayed everything was clean, and all the employees were very helpful. Room was comfortable, but tall people be forewarned -at 6ft (1.8m), I was longer than the bed. Can't comment on noise level since I stayed here before the club reopened.

Stayed in a bunk room with my teenaged daughter. I really enjoyed the hotel and the neighbourhood but it is a very very small room. Desk staff were pleasant. Decor is delightful. Very clean, especially the bathrooms. Disappointed we didn't get to see the ballroom. The Rooftop was open and I popped up for a glass of wine. The music was way too loud and there were few seats, as though it was set up for dancing, but that definitely wasn't the vibe of the clientele. It was really hot while we stayed here and it would have been nice to have a water carafe or something in the lobby to fill our water bottles. Overall, you can't beat this hotel for the price and I will stay here again.

I actually stayed some years ago but I really loved it here and will definitely return when back in NYC. It was very unique, charming and comfortable with a lovely cafe to have breakfast. I had heard some ghost stories and have to admit I think it’s haunted though I won’t go into why on here. Supposedly ghosts of Titanic personnel who escaped the sinking and stayed here after it happened still live here. Experience for yourself ! Very close to some lovely river walks where you can take pictures of the Statue of Liberty 🗽.

I don’t usually post reviews about hotels, but after how many disappointed guests I talked to during my stay, I feel the need to share with others. First and foremost, if you stay in the cheaper ($200/night) bunk bed rooms, then this is 100% an under-construction hostel experience. Someone bought the “hotel” in Dec 2022 and it’s been under construction since. Pros: - Location is great is you want to be in the meatpacking district. It’s also surprisingly quiet at night for being so close to the West Side Highway - Private rooms, which can be rare to find at a hostel - Has hot, running water - The construction workers you share the bathroom with to get ready in the morning are all super friendly Cons: - The hotel is under construction. You can scroll through other’s photos, but most of the hotel is closed off with dust barriers and is inaccessible. The hallway smells like mildew so I understand the need for renovation - Construction starts around 7:30 each morning. This didn’t bother me since I had to leave for work, but annoyed other guests on vacation hoping to sleep in - Walls are paper thin. I could hear my neighbor’s tv, which they had on 24/7 - The beds feel like old boxsprings they forgot to put a mattress on. I couldn’t sleep the first night because no matter which way I turned there was a spring digging into my back. It’s also barely big enough for one person, so if you come as a couple, expect to sleep in separate beds - The rooms are small. Like, really small. The only way to open a suitcase is to put it on the bed, which meant only one of us could have a suitcase open at a time and had to close them back up to sleep at night. We also constantly bumped into each other or banged our heads on the bed trying to get dressed in the morning - The construction workers do use the same shared bathroom as the guests. This means if you shower after 7a you may be in a towel with construction workers walking in - The elevator was barely working on our last day. The stairs are closed to authorized personnel only so we waited about 10 min for the elevator to work again and then shared it with a worker and all his ladders and tools + us and our suitcases Bottom line: it’s very expensive compared to other hostels in NYC. I’ve paid $60/night for beds in cleaner, better located hostels via Hostelworld.

I chose The Jane due to its great location & interesting history, plus it was a bargain. However it’s quaint quirkiness and beautiful aesthetic elements are sadly overshadowed by its desperate need for a refresh. I stayed in one of the historic small rooms and it was clean, quirky and comfortable enough for my one night, plus a bargain. The bathrooms were very clean. There was no bar or main floor lounge open during my stay, as the staff said they thought they were getting ready to renovate, The staff during my stay were friendly but not overly interested and gave no information really at check in. Here’s hoping The Jane gets a refresh soon and it’s charm restored but still remains a bit of a bargain!

Under construction basically! NO ballroom, NO patio, NO bar! All you get is the room and the bathroom. No place to sit, no coffee; there is nothing there other than the room. And they vaguely said it will be like this for several more months. I was there beginning May 2023. I felt cheated because this info wasn’t on the website. Wish I had studied the reviews before booking. I was so looking forward to the upstairs bar and patio.

Stayed here in 2019 with my son, in one of the bunk bed cabins with a shared bathroom. We liked it so much that I brought my younger son last week. He’s only 5 so I got us a captains cabin with its own bathroom…can’t handle that shared bathroom with a small child. Perfect location, our room had a gorgeous view of the Hudson River and the hotel is right by the Pier 51 water playground. The only thing I didn’t like is that there isn’t any housekeeping service. But I still give five stars because of the rates, atmosphere, and location. Would definitely stay there again.

Have stayed here over the years and always love it. You can't beat the price, and if you're running around the city you just need a clean simple place to rest your head. The shared bathroom is fine, you get a robe and slippers. And, if you feel like splurging, get the bigger room. I stayed once and had a courtyard and massive bathroom. Also has huge history. Totally recommend

I loved the strange atmosphere of the hotel, and all the breaths of history over my shoulders. But I was quite disappointed that there were practically no common areas. The bar and the rooftop which you can see on many pictures are separated and not available for hotel guests. Our room was small, but beautiful. Not much to see from the dirty windows, the AC was weak and if you closed the curtains to cover daylight they covered the AC 😅. All in all, it was quite a lot like being in a movie of Wes Anderson or Stanley Cubrick. Including the dead cat hanging at the reception.

One of the worst experiences I’ve had a hotel. First, it’s an actual construction site. I got one of the rooms with a shared bathroom. Definitely not enough bathrooms per guest. People just sat in the small stalls forever. The AC was broken, mattress was hard as a rock. Room was dirty. And the place REEKED of cigarette smoke.

The Jane is little more than a construction site right now, both inside and outside - there’s another building construction site directly opposite. So, it’s noisy and none of the facilities are open. The bedrooms are pretty unique as they’re like ships cabins, but they stink of 100 years of cigarette smoke. Bottom line, it beats sleeping on the street.

Comically small rooms with a unique style. Shared bathrooms only but we only once experienced a wait for the shower. Staff are very friendly. Apparently haunted but we never saw any spookiness. Stay for the history, quirkiness, price and great location. Mattresses aren't the most comfortable hence 4/5 stars.

Oh, the Jane. Always my last resort and yet perfectly in tune with my needs: as in, cheap and perfectly located. Recommended for visitors traveling alone who do not mind a no-frills place to crash and plan on spending at least 15 hours per day out and about. Must pack: plastic flip flops, a toiletry bag with a loop (for hanging on a hook), and your own wifi. Not recommended for germaphobes: not because it is unclean (it's very clean) but because you will be sharing a bathroom with strangers in cramped quarters and these things might tick you off.

Obsessed. hostile yet has real charm. Clean. And beds are comfortable. Even can get extra pillows upon request. They could get new slippers though - mine had a hole this time lol. But even in covid still felt safe. Team always cleaning. It’s not really a place to relax due to shared cramped quarters but cheap great way to rest at the end of a long day.

This club was one of the worst clubs i've ever been to. Weak drinks in a wanna be cool place. We are NYC club regulars and have never had the guys in our party denied entry to a club. Even the security couldn't believe the bird faced looking girl that was saying who was allowed in and who wasn't said the guys in our group couldn't come in. Dont come here your not missing anything.

Stayed here in 2019, so this review is not the most current but it was overall positive. Shared a little bunk bed room with a friend. We loved it! The rooms are so unique! If you are someone who doesnt like small spaces though you may feel claustrophobic. It was quiet and we rested well. I had a lovely four-day stay at The Jane. I was traveling by myself for a music gig in mid-town, so the standard cabin was perfect: compact without sacrificing comfort. The shared bathrooms were very clean. The location is a minute walk from the Hudson and the riverside path. Great neighborhood, a ten-minute walk to Tea & Sympathy or the subway. I was disappointed (though not surprised) to find that the restaurant and the rooftop bar were closed, so the only reason for 4 and not 5 stars was the lack of any place to hang out inside the hotel. For $100/night, I'd definitely stay here again!

Probably a "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" story. After many years of supporting countless trips to Manhattan with an affordable stay in an incredible quiet neighborhood, with a quirky vibe and history and nautical ships cabin rooms, generally friendly staff, shared baths for a Euro feel (lots of Euros), I suspect this will be a huge pivot to a changed higher end experience. Based on current reviews as I looked to book, and room rates up from 125 to 150 now 200 to 220, even while undergoing what looks to be a very disruptive construction project on the common areas and the captains quarters maybe they want to lower guest count during the project, but my understanding from staff it is all part of a well funded plan to turn all of the larger rooms and some common areas (most of which other than cafe were not regularly open to guests) into a private residence club. Can't remember the name but there are a few around the US. I suspect room rates for their 50 square foot rooms won't return to reasonable, maybe to support justification for future remodel into larger rooms, and a fully private club. NYC life. Thanks for the great memories Jane!

I was delighted to have found the Jane Hotel in NYC. It was and on my next visits it will be the place I will return to. I loved his aesthetics, his vibe and above all the attention of his manager who solved all the problems that arose for me. It is in a perfect area in NYC: between Chelsea and Tribeca... you have the view of the river and the area is wonderful. Many told me that I was lucky to have found this gem. I spent some very nice days in NYC for my birthday and part of it was having been here in this place. Thank you very much to all.

You get what you get for the amazing location. Amazing walkability to shops, cafes, and the subway line. Bathrooms are dorm-style and co-ed (don't worry, the showers/toilets have solid doors). I stayed in the smallest room they had, and besides the beds it was standing room only. The less luggage you pack, the more comfortable you will be.

This hotel is such a gem! The location is great, right next to the Hudson River and The High Line - but what makes this hotel even more incredible is its undeniable charm. Before booking I read a review that said this hotel is like something straight out of a Wes Anderson movie. That describes it so perfectly. It's classic and unique. Every staff member I encountered was extremely helpful and hospitable. I couldn't be more pleased with my stay here. Everything is very well maintained. This hotel really made my New York stay special. Highly recommend!

I absolutely loved this cool hotel! I stayed in the captain’s cabin with my teenage daughter for three nights. Great price, and we were very comfortable. Loved sitting in the cafe before or after we ventured out. The historic charm had us feeling like we were in a Wes Anderson movie or Clue! Nice touches throughout considering how affordable it was. Only a block or two from High Line and short walk to Chelsea Market. Walked across the street to see sunset on the river! Will be back!

So the story goes something like that The Jane is slowly closing; they're renovating to be some new building for rich people, and while they do that they still operate. There is a lot of construction going on. I never heard any of it from my room. The room itself was reeeeally small but I was ok with it after some initial shock. I just ended up living out of the small bed. Reminded me of dorm life. The shared bathrooms always smelled like pee, which was annoying, but generally were clean enough to use. The staff were always nice. Construction workers were always nice. The fellow guests at the hotel were either old people, drunk overnighters and we had one crazy guy have the cops escort him to the hospital one night. All things considered it's about what I expected; still I can't help but think about what this place used to be and so 3 is fair I think.

Beautiful and historic landmark hotel w/ plenty of (former) reasonable priced rooms, a superb ballroom, good café and amazing views at its rooftop (all of them now members-only). Staff was good, special mentions to Jamie and José. You (presumably) still can have better deals if a frequent traveler. Nearby you'll find West Village speakeasy, the Highline, the Hudson Yards and the cyclable Hudson riverside. Now the downsides: you'll have to pay city tax and it can turn your stay expensive (even if it's one of Manhattan's most affordable), the rooms are extremely small, you'll have almost no amenity beside a bed for what you pay, the nearby subway stations is far away, the place is now under renovations and a lot of areas are closed and will be keep closed afterwards and the place used to get crowded during weekend's nights when the ballroom turn into a discotheque.

I was truly conflicted on how many stars to give this hotel. Staff was nice and helpful and they seemed to do what they could to keep the facilities clean. But it is off putting to see your neighbors be so gross. In the gated bathroom area people would not wash their hands. I am sure that’s everywhere but I don’t see it. Hotel should have someone spraying the door knobs so guest that are clean can see efforts are in place to not spread bodily fluids around. The bunk bed room in cramped. Two people can sleep but not do too much else. My cousin and I could not got in our luggage or change at the same time. I would do it again but only stay one day like I did last time. Great experience and unfortunately the hotel can’t make people be clean. Everyone should do it once.

Currently under renovation, so lots of the communal areas are not accessible which is a shame. But the overall charm and character of the building is amazing and so unique that it could never be replicated.. It feels like you're staying in a movie set, warts and all. Location is fantastic. A safe and trendy area a few blocks from the Friends apartment building. Plenty of independent coffee shops and bakerys near by. Chelsea market is a couple of blocks north. My advice for anyone travelling on a budget is to rent a Citi Bike. The cycle paths are very flat and safe. You can cycle to Times Square or lower Manhattan within 20 minutes from the Jane Hotel. Shared bathroom. Always clean, and the showers/toilets are locked rooms, so you feel quite private as its not an open cubicle like a public restroom. Bed was comfortable. My only other feedback would be that I didn't need to use the air con, but when I did turn it on to see if it worked. It was very noisy (definitely couldnt have slept with it on) But overall I'm so happy I found this hotel, and if I'm ever in NYC again it will be the first place I check for availability

I stayed here for a 1 night stay when I had tickets to see a show at Madison Square Garden. Yes, the room is absolutely tiny but NY is pricey and Expedia recommended this as one of the best priced options. So yes its small, yes shared bathrooms (to be fair were clean) and yes the bed was not the comfiest but overall, I think the value was there. I paid about $150 for a night and was in a nice neighborhood, safe to walk to & from Times Square/Garden at night. Lots of eateries & nightlife walking distance. Would stay again if I were travelling solo.

I stay here almost every time I visit NY. A great value for the price. Historic, kept clean, pleasant and helpful staff. Nestled in the West Village beside the Hudson in a safe, quiet area.

Make sure to use Hoᴛᴇʟʙoʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏm when booking your stay. They compare hundreds of booking websites and typically will have prices a lot cheaper compared to others! You're welcome :)! This resort is one of the most well known in the area. I have been staying here for a very long time. If you stay for a few nights you won't be disappointed. This hotel is awesome. Great history! Great look! Clean room! Small room (but we booked the cheapest category and know before), very cosy. Loved it and also love the breakfast/coffee store next to the lobby. Next time we'll be there again!

For the price it's at it's best. Rooms are small but clean. I shared the restrooms (toilet and shower), they were always clean. You can get a drink and a small snack in the cafe until 5pm. Greenwich village (where the hotel is located) is a nice neighbourhood with everything you need. You can go for a walk anytime in Hudson river park. I'd definitely recommend this to my friends and family.

I have stayed at the Jane 3x. Twice in the small cabin while on solo trips where I was absolutely happy with the cleanliness of the room and the shared bathrooms for the price, and this last time in the Captain's cabin, which was pretty amazing. The room had 3 windows and 2 AC units, a king size bed and a lot of character (as well as a private bathroom, alleluia). It is my understanding that not all Captain's cabins are the same size and shape so I might have lucked out here but every time I go, I meet friendly and helpful staff and I have a good experience. I have read all the reviews mentioning bed bugs but I can only go on my own experience which is always positive. The location is good too, as you get to be in the Meatpacking district which is very charming with its rows of townhouses and cobbled streets, multiple interesting restaurants and it's close to the water's edge, so you can see the Statue of Liberty from your window. About a 10 min walk from the subway. My only negative is that they now offer room service (outsourced from another restaurant) with a small menu that you have in your room, yet when we went on the app to order half the menu wasn't even there (probably because it was the middle of the week and not a weekend) but still, that was a tad disappointing.

Read about what to expect. The rooms are quiet clean and comfy. Huge 2 person Shower and bathrooms at the end of the hall were spotless. With only a couple showers per floor you might have to be flexible or go to another floor to shower. Although it was open most the time when I was there. Just be prepared. The front desk seemed helpful too.

Won’t stay again due to: heater not working, 2am screaming in street after the hotels bar closed and staff didn’t care, shower filthy, sink stopped and strangely no coffee ( considering how expensive the room is the cheap owners can’t afford cheap coffee makers like Motel 6)! Next time in NYC I will pay just a little more so not to pay high dollar for a dump!!!

Very nice, but very tiny rooms. I stayed two nights and had bug bites after the first night. They took this very seriously, disinfected all my belongings and the room. I was then given an other room (no bugs!) and didn't have to pay the first night - wow!

Good for what it was ... really tiny room with shared washrooms in a cool historic building. Great location near Greenwich village with lots of cafes and food nearby.

they actually made it impossible for me to book my room. Called multiple times and got hung up on and when I called the person out for being rude they said “there’s no point in talking” ... then I had a friend go in person and check if they had availability and they told her yes, but to me they hung up! I cannot believe that’s an experience in the hospitality industry especially at such a reputable spot in the city.

Be very careful when checking in and get a room on one of the top floors or bring ear plugs. The music from the "club" can be heard ALL night (until at least 2am). Sleep was extremely difficult. You also have to request having your garbage take out. After 3 nights I had to call the front desk. At $325 a night you kinda figure there'd be better service

I went here to celebrate my best friend's birthday in November and she was physically assaulted by two ladies. When I say physically assaulted, I mean it. She was hit in the head with a glass bottle and her forehead was cut open. Security saw her bleeding and instead of trying to help her, they escorted her to a private office behind the lobby so she wouldn't be seen by any one who was already there partying. I was appalled at how little the Jane staff did and how they responded to the situation. They just stood there and did nothing. After I took my friend to the hospital, we reported the incident and shared the blurry video we have of the girls running away. My friend did not do anything to provoke them, we were just dancing and minding our own business in the corner by the fireplace. I'm not sure if the girls were aiming to hit someone else and my friend got in the way but it was a horrible night. To top it off, nothing was done by security or staff at hotel and they TOLD US NOT TO CALL THE POLICE. They had our numbers and didn't even try to check up on my friend any time after. When I tried to follow up with them, the Jane Hotel stopped responding to my phone calls and emails. I then threatened to call the police, and they responded ONLY THEN to tell me the time to report the incident to the police HAD PASSED. This place is A DISGRACE. Please do not support this atrocious place.

I've been wanting to stay at the Jane for years, but finally ended up doing it during a weekend trip for a friend's birthday. I'd read a review earlier last year about renovations, and their website does have a(n easy to miss) banner at the top saying that it's under construction, but the actual scope of the construction is not described at all. Basically 90% of the interior is gutted, exposed and there is work being done EVERYWHERE. The entrance was extremely hard to find; the actual lobby entrance is under construction and has a sign with an arrow and street number pointing to the right, but the temporary current entrance is in the basement, which is also mostly under renovation. I actually don't know if it's legal to host guests with this level of construction this close places guests are exposed. The elevator wasn't working when I arrived, so I had to carry my bags up many flights of stairs and squeeze by construction workers who were actively working, peeling the wallpaper off walls, working on wiring, and everything in between. During my stay I was actually worried about the amount of plaster and probably asbestos I was inhaling. The elevator didn't work until late that night, so I had to go up and down the stairs while the crews were working a few times. Aside from the construction, the staff was pretty nice and polite, but I didn't really interact with anyone outside of checking in and out. The payment process was a bit strange and a little sketchy, and I was asked to sign a waiver stating that a temporary hold of $50 a day would be put on my card in case of incidentals, and that the hotel is not responsible for the theft or damage of any items not kept in the provided safe. May be a standard thing, but seemed a bit strange to me. I knew the size and quality of the room going in, and that was part of the charm, but the beds were very uncomfortable (you can feel the springs) and the sheets and blanket were very old, and a bit worn and stained. The walls are very thin and my neighbors were loud. Anytime someone was checking in or would stop to talk in the hall it was very loud and, with the construction, taking a nap or relaxing during the day is out of the question. The ballroom, bar, and rooftop are all under construction, so I wasn't able to see anything but my room and the bathroom. The room hallways were dim and dingy, and kind of creepy to be honest, with an old mothball/cigarette kind of smell. It looks like there are some older long-term guests/residents, and many loud young guests, and overall was more of a slightly more private hostel experience. I'm not too upset, because it was so cheap and did the job, but it was a bit creepy, and I'm worried about the possible amount of asbestos I've inhaled. I was worried about my belongings after the waiver and seeing the condition of the place, but thankfully nothing was tampered with and I wasn't charged for any surprise incidentals. I'd love to try again once the construction is done and hopefully edit this review or make a new/better one, but my hopes aren't super high on this one.
