It is what it is! If you need a reasonable cheap (for the area) place to stay with basic amenities (shower, towels, clean sheets) and not much else, it can work. For over $100 it feels a bit overpriced, but then again, it's in a great location. The rooms were clean and the staff friendly. The shared bathrooms were surprisingly tolerable and I never did have to wait. They are cleaned periodically, and must be cleaned pretty often as it was clean every time I went in. This would be a decent overnight stay for those who are looking to spend as little time in the hotel room as possible, just needing a bedroom and bathroom. It's a couple steps up from couch surfing or a hostel/dorm but not much more. The walls are fairly thin, the building is very old, but again it's decently clean and in a great location. You just have to know what you are getting into upfront.

I always rate places based on cost or budget so in terms of budget hotels in Manhattan this was 4 stars. I stayed here back in 2003, lol so its been a little while but i noticed the photos on a Google search. The hotel has a gothic/art deco type antique feel to it which is one of a kind, at the same time its a bit gloomy. The location is top notch right near NYU and Union Square on 17 th street. The price is still great as of 2021.Note that there is not a private bathroom so you will be sharing bathroom with other residents on the hallway. The rooms are also tiny think, yourself plus 2 big bags plus the little TV and a window. I personally didnt have any problem with this given that i was a single traveler and on a budget and staying in Manhattan for below $100 a night. Quite memorable for writing a review 18 years later.

The city has required Hotel 17 to revert back to SRO Extended Stay Hotel: 30 day increments. But at current 30-day rate, if you divide by 14 days, it's about what it used to cost for a single, $106/night. Do the math for your case. I've been coming here for over ten years and find it adequate. The shared bathrooms are fine. They're cleaned often. And with two to a floor wing for 11 rooms, I've never had a conflict. I haven't found anything price competitive in Manhattan. Rooms are now serviced just once per week. I don't know how this will evolve in time as this Extended Stay has only been in effect for a few months.

For a 2-star hotel we were very pleasantly surprised. The decor is quite dated and sharing bathrooms probably brought the scores down, but we were very satisfied. The hotel performs as a much better rated establishment, with a 24 hour concierge and service desk and a very helpful team we were never more than a few minutes away from an extra pillow, ironing board or help working out the radiator. The shared bathrooms didn't cause any issues. It took 4 days for us to see anyone else on our floor and another day for them to be in the bathroom when we needed it. Though there are 4 bathrooms per floor (of about 10 rooms) so plenty to go round. My single complaint is that the air-con units were fitted clearly without making the window seal around them secure again so there was always a draught / noise coming through but after touring NYC each day we fell asleep instantly nonetheless. The location is excellent, about 2 blocks from Union Square Subway there is a direct connection to the major lines going through NYC all times of the day. Union Square itself was buzzing at all hours of the day as it hosts a very large working area, many shops and a strong night-life. We found 100s of restaurants, bars and cafes within just a few blocks. (Though of course couldn't try all of them in the week we were there). Overall I recommend the hotel, as if you are planning on spending enough time in your room for the decor to bother you, you probably aren't enjoying NYC as much as you could :)

It's great if you know what to expect. It's in a great part of the city with plenty to explore nearby. The hotel is clean, friendly staff. The room is tiny, very loud heating system. I had a room right on the street, but it was actually the radiator that woke me up several times the night before an interview. Shared bathrooms (four per floor) are not as big an issue as I thought they'd be; they were kept very clean and were always accessible when I needed them. As long as you don't require a luxury stay, this is an excellent way to lodge in the city without spending a lot.

The only less good thing with this hotel are that they are not serving any breakfast or small snacks. It is an axtended hotel and it can be expensive to eat all meals out if you don't know where to go. Except for that it's a good hotel. Cleaners come and clean your room once a week but they clean all the toilets everyday. It's bathroom sharing but you have a zink in your room. Friendly staff with 24 hours open reception. I have lived here 2 times and I like it. It has an old fashioned style.

This place is a Covid death trap. If you check in you will take some cockroaches home. This hotel is filled with roaches, they even get in your bed. I give it one star for great location

This hotel is the worse. They steal and they treat woman disrespectful. Someone broke into my room, and left the safe open. The manager never wanted to help me find out who did it. It took 3 weeks to find out that they rigged the cameras. The best thing in this building is the House Keeping. Everybody else is sleeping on you. They charge you $2 to get any of your mail from UPS, FedEx, Amazon. Many people have complaints against Tariq Khan, who is the Master Mind of the Negativity that goes on there.

Home away from home. I have spent almost two years in this place and can only speak wonders about this place and its manager Tariq. Unbeatable location next to Union Square, awesome boutique style, elevator music, great value for price, any issues are always fixed promptly and the manager and workers are always kind and corteous. 10/10!

Stayed here in '95. Back then it was reserved for actors, models and musicians. An application for a booking need to be accompanied with an artists CV. Jumped through the hoops, got a nice big room overlooking the street. Stayed a week. Met the most interesting people. Brilliant location. Shared bathroom made it affordable. Fond memories.

Decent, clean hotel. Missed the fact that the bathrooms are shared when I booked it, so there was a little bit of a shock when I checked in. Small rooms, and mattress was one of the hardest I've ever slept on, but it wasn't uncomfortable. Good location! Overall, would recommend for anyone staying in NYC on the cheap!

Hotel 17 has a rich history in the city of NYC, and even though it’s not the fanciest place anymore, I recommend a stay here if you like no frills and a central location to the east side of Manhattan! Stayed here last year and it was perfect for a home base for a few months
