NYS needs to learn from WillowBrook and its history how to improve , not duplicate! Haven't we learned yet? Punishment without compassion or nurture will never improve the lives of people needing mental healing. It is counterproductive and South Beach Psychiatric Center is a waste of taxpayers dollars! It is shameful that after many complaints , documentaries showing extreme abuse to the mentally ill NYS still did nothing! South Beach Psychiatric facility should be shut down!! Enough is enough!!

I just finished watching Child Of Darkness and I am mortified that this place is still open! 69 deaths and counting how can this be allowed! Do the people of New York not care! With all the famous celebrities living in their big mansions couldn't a few get together and build a better place for the mentally ill! This tells me the world does not care about the mentally ill they just care about Real housewives of New York! My child was just admitted to a place in Houston Texas and I be damn if they let her die they will see the wrath like no other! Parents we are their voices let us be heard and protect our children! Never enroll your child here because it might be the last time you see him or her! Stop being Selffish you are not the only one in the world who has an ill child! God can and will do more you just have to ask him and be patient! I love all children and so should the world they were not asked to be brought here God wanted them here! God bless each and everyone stay strong!

Was placed here by my step mother when I was 12 for who knows what. But what ever the mental health "diagnoses" may be, the hospital is the last place to go to. You are treated less than human, more like a prison. Forced to take medications that cause way more harm than anything else. Staff absolutely don't care at all about the individuals. It's just like any other job, you go there to get paid, no one is there because they want to help. The whole system is about making money. Anyone who advocates for this should be ashamed of themselves.

I have no direct experience with this hell hole but after watching Children of Darkness and researching this facility further I've learned about the horrific events that take place. It is possible that the facility is under new management/ control with all new staff as of recent, but if not then those responsible for the horrific treatment of patients should have the same things done to them that has been done to the defenseless who are tortured and killed; and may they suffer and rot in hell.

I also watched children of darkness and was horrified. I also have the knowledge to know that this was filmed in a time where mental health was under funded and hospitals were way under staffed. I believe that this place now has updated treatment and probably operates better than it did 30+ years ago. I honestly would like to visit and see how much the place and treatments have changed. I would think that this place is probably monitored by the state a little more closers nowadays.

As an intern of this place all these reviews are simply false. The staff is super caring, the patients are happy, I have interacted with several of them always smiling. Most of these reviews are unfounded and just down right uneducated. Many, many, many reforms have taken place since the "children of darkness". It seems these people just watched a video and assume things have never EVER changed. That documentary was from a time where almost NOTHING was known about mental disorders. The norm was high dose of drugs and lack of compassion. You would be hard pressed to find a good facility ANYWHERE during that time. As the times changed, this facility has changed. I have personally interacted with the people of this institution and I have not heard one bad thing. Anyone can look at an OLD documentary of which encapsulates EVERY facility of the time and make a judgement.

I will give it a 3 because really who wants to rate there stay 5 star in a looney bin. I had a long stay here not by choice. They helped me get home to my daughter. Recovered my id, social, and free plane ticket back to chicago. In there they have computer time and acess. A lady who cuts your hair at no cost and does an amazing job. Also they acomidated my kosher food diet and had jewish study. I enjoyed art therpy my councler was great. And a ladies group where we got to do and show an activity that makes us feel empowered. Now i hear about the deaths that happend here scary to think... But my exsprence wasnt too bad alot of waiting but the staff really where careing and helpful.

Not much has changed in 40 years, since the documentary children of darkness came out. This place has been testing on patients that they deem inhuman and they treat them as such. There might be a few employees that care, but it falls on deaf ears, to the ones in charge, like always. May all those patients that were killed by neglect or because they were knowingly given fatal doses of medications. May they rest in peace.

I was here for 8 months (4 months inpatient, 4 months transitional Living residence,) and the units are well kept, the majority of the staff are friendly and love to help (you're always going to have a straggler or 2,) and the food wasn't half bad. I, like anyone else, wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but once I accepted that they were actually trying to help me, and I stopped being cynical, my experience was much easier. I recommend this place for sure! 5 stars!

It was pretty fun and I was here since 10wut my best friend that don’t really care about you that’s the fun fact we were running around the hospital at night and we’re trying to kill ourselves like jump off the roof it was pretty fun they didn’t really care but I like the medications this taste and sound like candy I would recommend to go there because you can do whatever you want it’s like a free hotel not five stars because they wouldn’t let me smoke❤️😴🍼🐝🪬👑

It’s unfortunate to have a family member with a mental illness. You want your loved one to get help and live a normal life with the help of medication. What’s difficult is to not know what goes on inside the hospital. I am familiar with South Beach from years ago. It was old and dingy. The staff for the most part was very pleasant. Unfortunately my brother after years of being on his own, is now back in the hospital. Setting up a visit is time consuming. I couldn’t get Jennifer the women in charge of visitation to answer or return a call. I finally was able to setup a drop off, not a visit. Before the drop off of clothes and hygiene products, I inquired about bringing something to eat. I was told I could drop food but anything not finished could not be saved. Understandable, that was the same rule from years ago. My husband dropped the belongs and McDonalds at 11:30am. Jennifer won’t let my brother have his food till 3pm. How miserable is she that she has to deprive someone from eating a hot meal, just because she can. What time is lunch????? To visit a patient you have to be unemployed. Tues and Thursday 1 to 3pm only. Now, I have to pay closer attention to what goes on there. I felt comfortable in the past but, apparently they have a person in charge that goes out of her way to upset the patients. To fully understand why this is so alarming is because the patients have no freedom. They have to ask for permission to use the restroom, they can’t sleep if their tired- only at bedtime. It’s very sad, and I’m fully aware that guidelines and procedures have to be used to give structure and stability. That doesn’t mean you have to be heartless. A visit or a drop off is the way we view Christmas. So what Jennifer did was show a child a gift , and then tell him he can’t have it. This is a health care professional? not in my opinion.

They are so wonderful here and I truly feel that treatment was so therapeutic. They have wonderful groups and DBT and make sure your needs are met and accounted for. They were super flexible to grant me time to celebrate my mom's birthday! Shout out to all especially to Melissa, Rena, and Romesa for their help. Dr. Darly along with Dr. Mehta and Dr Preethi were so amazing. Charge nurse Gitu is amazing and make sure we take our meds to get well. Shout out to Allison, Alyssa, Cris and the most amzazing Mojadas. We can't forget the maintenance crew, along with kitchen staff and mojadas. They deserve a raise. Special shout out to Pete and Albert who went above and beyond to sympathize with us all. Thank you and love you! Mei H. from 4B :)
