Really recommend here for a different taste of coffee drinks. It’s a Japanese-fused place. I got the black camo latter which is made with hojicha and espresso shot. It was amazing! Creamy, thick, rich, and tasty. Wanna go back for other drinks. And I agree with some comments here. I’ll say this is a take-out coffee spot. The space was dark and noisy since it was a shared space with with a restaurant. Not ideal for long stay.. you have to speak loud inside.

Interesting concept cafe. Their lattes are unique. I had a military latte just out of curiosity - it was kind of a matcha latte with an espresso shot... It was actually pretty good. Seating was limited. Because it's located in a restaurant and crowded, I wouldn't recommend it for studying or reading books. Probably better for just taking a break or chatting with your friends.

I visited this place last Sat and I was ready to order, standing in front of the register, however, a staff was talking to other staff sitting on her chair, she didn't even say hello to me or may I help you eventhough she saw me. So I asked her can I order? then she was like "yea yea" and that was it. Not at all satisfied. ++Forgot to mention this, my order was around $7 sth and I gave her 10 bucks not a $100 but she said she doesn't have change. So what can i do? Should i tip to her or spend more money to order an extra menu?

A amazing coffee shop hidden in a little alley and inside a restaurant. I got a military latte. Perfect balance between matcha and espresso. Taste very smoothly with little sweet. And the latte art was amazing!

Very nice and cozy spot. Small area to stay and enjoy drink. Shares a back space with a warm rustic restaurant. A bit confusing to locate the entrance as it is the same as the restaurant. I had no issue with the staff, I thought they were friendly. Sadly the $7 drink for served in a paper cup with zero design attempt tasted pretty bland and bad and grainy; it was about as exciting as something from the corner deli. It was ranked as one of the worse drink I tried. I am very confused what all the rave was about. I guess I came with high expectations; I expected NY standard. Sad, I really wanted to like and support small local coffee houses but I think I will pass this next time. On a good note, it has a small nook to sit and rest your legs but it's not very quiet and quite dark (goes with the vibe tbf) for reading or relaxing but will be fine for catching up provided it's not full house. Tables are tightly next to one another.

It seems like the images people post really portray this place as something miraculous, but that was not necessarily my experience. I ordered two cortados and the barista used the same milk for both, so the second one had no foam and both were obnoxiously hot.

Trendy coffee shop serving high quality coffee drinks in a large warehouse/restaurant space, accessed via Cortland Alley. Per the recommendations on here ordered the military latte (espresso+matcha) which was unique and tasty. Also ordered a regular latte which was 👍

Great taste, the coffee is bold. The interior is cosy dark. You have to follow Au Cheval, it’s a corner of the restaurant.

Love the coffee - especially military latte and black camo latte! Service is prompt, only thing is because it’s sharing a space with another establishment, it’s hard to hear when your order is ready and there is very limited seating. Great for grab and go!

Been there twice, 4/1 and 4/3. 4/1 we were blown away. We remarked that we had found a new favorite coffee shop. I had the high five mocha both days and on 4/1 it was balanced between bitter and sweet and savory, minty, and peppery, but on 4/3 it was peppery sweet that made my stomach hurt. The oat milk latte is smooth and neutral and really let's the coffee shine, but the almond milk latte is sweet and the vanilla in the milk is overpowering. It's really a shame. The barista did offer to make the almond milk latte over for us but knowing that the milk was the problem it would have had the same problem.

I drink A LOT of coffee. I make espresso drinks at home. This place is hands down the best coffee I have ever had. If you like coffee and you’re lucky enough to be in the area when they’re open you’d be a fool not to come here. Seriously every 5 star coffee shop I’ve ever rated actually deserves 4 stars because this is incredible

The military latte is my fav strong drink that consist of espresso shot and matcha. Great soundtrack playing through out. Fun fact, the shared space restaurant is also where Carrie Bradshaw went for a date and puked on the date’s shoe outside on the street in Just Like That.

Just infront of the cafe, you see a road with grafitti which is amazing. The vibe around is great. Except we went by the reviews and tried matcha latte and roasted matcha latted but didnt like at all. :/

You can never tell from the outside that there’s a coffee shop in a warehouse looking space! Def a hidden gem. The military drink was something I’ve never had before that blew my mind! The sprinkle cookie was pretty big and yummy too.

Nice ambiance. I got a military latte that has matcha but for me the matcha was very overpowering and the espresso shot is quite strong for a medium cup. Chocolate chip cookie was good.

Excellent coffee, cool environment and good service. I tried the regular coffee (strong & yummy) and the chocolate chip and funfetti cookies (just OK).

I appreciate the idea of this cafe and it was like a mystery to find the actual location. The cafe was located in between streets. It’s more of a “order to go” kind of shop. Inside it’s dark and because the cafe is connected to another food place it’s seems like there’s a lot going on, even at 10am. I had the Black Camo Latte and it was kind of interesting. Not as flavorful as it looked and sounded like but definitely a softer taste. Wish they had more appetizing pastry options. I did not get any pastry so my food rating is just off the late I ordered. If I’m around the area I would definitely still consider trying more options.

Located inside Au Cheval, this is a little gem of a cafe with skilled baristas serving up unique concoctions and classic brews. I had the black camo latte which is a blend of hojicha, a shot of espresso and steamed milk. The foam was heavenly and the taste divine. Will be back.

Tucked away right inside Au Cheval, the cold brew was A+. Several matcha drink options too

I love the cool latte art, barista was really good at it. I had the military latte and I think it had a unique taste and worth to give it a try. But the matcha flavor was so strong in it so I think I wont have it again for the next time.

Lots of military latte recommendations here but if you are not a matcha person get the black camo. It uses hojicha instead

This is the most delicious coolest coffee tea blend ever. The vibe in Au Cheval is super cool and being down a wee alley makes it even cooler. We had their 2 iconic coffees the Military and Black Camo. The originator hails from Japan and wow he knows his stuff. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun

This place is hidden inside a restaurant in an alley. Really enjoyed the military latte, which is a mix between strong espresso and matcha.

Excellent baristas and tasty coffee. If you’re looking for it, note that it’s inside the Au Cheval building.

Kind of a weird location but they have signs posted. The shop is cozy and well decorated. I got the black camo and my friend got the high five mocha. Both our drinks had nice latte art (even in to-go cups) and packed great flavor. I'd specifically recommend the high five mocha because it had a lot more flavor to me. Out of the twenty something coffee shops I've gone to in NYC Sawada is definitely near the top - stop by if you can.
