Good selection of fish, staff are helpful and for the most part, knowledgeable. Highly recommend. The selection of exotics always has me coming back.

The lady at the front desk is absolutely horrible and rude. I asked her some question respectfully, and she was giving me the attitude just because I was not buying ? Don’t go their if you do have another choice. By the way, the store was not busy and it was empty when I get there. The lady should probably get training on how to communicate with others before she works there. Re: First, you recognized the wrong person, I came to the store by myself and I was not in rush. Secondly, when you guys received a poor review, the first thing you do is to find an excuse and transfer the problem to another. That’s the reason why you guys got lots of bad reviews. By the way, an excuse or a lie can not change the lady”s personality. Everybody better check the price online ( like Amazon or eBay) first before you buy any equipment there. It might save you 50% or more. BTW just don’t go there anymore

This is the best fish store ever! I drive 100+miles to get there several times a year. And the trip is always worth it. My problem is to decide what to buy, they have the coolest oddball fish and the most beautiful standard fish you could ever want. John and the gang are awesome! Really top notch! A must if you’re in New York City and a must if you’re looking for the exotic side of fish keeping! Deserves 6 stars!!

Great collection but the staff are very unwelcoming and feel bothered by questions. They don't seem to care about their customers at all. Update: Do not bother asking the guy who is always cleaning the tanks. He seems to be very busy all the time so you may not get the best response. Try asking the people at the front desk. They are more helpful.

The Chinese owner act there is only one pet fish store in the world. I am shock he is still in business all those year. Probably great advertisement and importing cheap fish from China. Why does he have so many five star, they payed for those fake reviews. Always read the one stars and you will read some of those five start are so fake that mention how good they have salt water set up This shop has none.

Honestly I'm pretty torn on writing this review as Monster Aquarium has been overall a good place to get fish and fish supplies ever since I moved to Queens. Prices are a little bit higher but the selection of fish is probably one of the best in the New York City area. The reason I'm writing this review today was because I was absolutely disgusted by the customer service I received the other day. This was probably hands down the worst experience I've ever had with an fish store. Unlike bigger chain stores like Petco/Petsmart, most mom-&-pop fish stores like Monster do not have a fish return policy or life guarantee. This means that once you pay, there are no returns or refunds if fish are found to be unhealthy and/or dies. Full disclosure is that I have never received sickly fish from Monster but when I do purchase fish from them I am vigilant and picky when choosing which fish to take home. This leads to the incident I had with a staff member today. I wanted to purchase some Green Neon Tetras as I saw a tank in the back filled with Neons. I was helped by a younger woman with glasses who picked out 5 for me and I asked if I could take a look before she bagged the fish. One of the tetras was upside down (possibly dead or close to dead) so she dumped the fish back into the tank and picked out 5 new ones for me. I took a quick peek and asked her to change one of the 5 as it's fins were torn up. Without a word, she dumped all the fish back into the tank, scooped out about 25 hastily, callously threw them all into specimen container and practically ran out of the back room ignoring me. In her haste she spilled the container and she dropped 3 or 4 Neons from specimen box and they were just flopping on the floor! She then spoke to her co-worker in Chinese that she didn't want to deal with me because I was being too picky and asked him to help me instead. The new guy apologized and picked up the fish (not sure if they were put back in the tank those poor guys) and helped me pick out my fish. I did consider just leaving then and there but I ultimately did make the purchase, shaking my head all the way out. The lack of care from this particular worker was downright appalling and honestly just rude. I understand that sometimes customers can be rude and unreasonable but I don't believe I was either; I just wanted healthy looking fish. Fishkeeping is already unpredictable as it is so pardon me if I didn't want fish that looked like it might not survive the trip home. It's interactions like these that leave such a bad impression that make consumers look for other options. Will I shop here again? Not entirely sure; I certainly didn't leave happy even if I got the fish I wanted. TL;DR: Fish Selection good, employee drops fish on floor because she doesn't want to help me.

Good selection of fresh water animals including amphibians. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They have pretty much everything you need for aquascaping. Fish prices are actually some of the best I've seen in the entire NY area. Prices on other items are about average though. Still. I would certainly recommend this store to any aquarists

Great store offers wide range of fish and aquarium products. Fish tanks always clean and fish appear healthy. Stuffs are nice and knowledgeable. They have relatively reasonably priced fish and even shrimp. Highly recommend!

It seems like the owner cannot handle any sort of constructive criticism they recieve from these Google reviews. Decided to pay a visit to the store to buy some fish and find out if these reviews are over exaggerating. They’re not. Most of the fish are in bad shape and the customer service is horrible. Wont be surprised if the owner replies to this making up a random scenario and making theirselves look good. Edit: While the response the owner gave to this comment seems polite and profesional, they did write “So what’s your story” beforehand. The behavior coming from the owner in these Google reviews is just a reflection of the quality of the store itself.

I'm editing my review again. The advice I have been referring to was when I bought mono-angels. I asked if mono-angels could go with angelfish. That is a VERY reasonable question to ask since I did not know much about mono-angels. When I was told I could mix the two I bought some to put with my angels. It is not until I got home and placed the mono-angels into my angel tank that I found out the real answer. I NEVER called this place over this issue. I did do a Google search to find out what was going on. That is also how I found out mono-angels eventually become salt water fish. Something that they should warn people about when buying since salt water fish require a complete different set up. As for the angels, I just wanted to return one of two that was hyper aggressive. I never asked for my money back. They lied to me about where the fish came from and hung up on me. This place doesn't care about any creature they sell. Only money. I do have to add that whenever I bought a fish from this place and put in in one of my two tanks my other fish got sick. Almost every fish I bought from this place died less than two months after purchase. That is NOT normal. If you want to mess up a well established and health tank buy from this place.

Monster Aquarium is a wonderful, if slightly cramped, fish store with an amazing selection and some of the most helpful staff of any store I know of. Got a question? They have an answer, right away, and it is always the correct answer. Even though this store is very much out of my way (I have to take an Uber) I will be returning for all my sea critter needs. A fantastic array of accessories is a bonus. I tested them out the first time I went by pretending I know nothing about keeping freshwater fish and looking for upsells or other sneaky business. None of that here. These are good, honest people, and they truly care about both customer service and the needs of their fish. Five stars.

Its a rlly nice place for freshwater stuff bc there like a lot of plants for an amazing price, as well as rare freshwater fish. ALSO they have ADA stuff for aquascaping which is pretty rare, as well as a large variety of rocks. Staff is really nice and even though some people think they're rude, they're caring in their own way, and offer whole hearted advice. Will definitely keep shopping here until the day i die 👍

I have been a customer of this place for over 10 years now. Came back after a long time. (Because petland discounts went out of business) this store has the best variety and you often find rare species you won't find other places. However their prices are not competitive compared to online prices. If you are in a rush and need something right away... this is the place...

Superior to any other fresh water aquarium stores I've been to in nyc. Water and fish are in prestine condition. Stock numerous fish and truly lives up to their name monster aquarium because they do have some monsters and potential monsters in stock. As well as smaller fish so those with smaller tanks can pick up a fish or two.

Won some fish in a raffle, it was shipped literally half way across the country. New York to Nebraska. There were a total of 8 fish in the order, I was expecting one big bag or maybe 2 bags of fish, but it ended up each fish was individually double bagged and all survived the trip. I have looked into other fish they have in stock, the prices seem very reasonable, will definitely buy from in the future. Thank you!

This is a very bad business. Monster Aquarium sells fish that are visibly sick. Bad color, bad body shape. They don’t honor fish that die, even when you bring good quality water. The business is sad for the industry and gets you tanks sick. They people do not care about what they do or what they sell, they just keep selling more bad fish without regard fir the hobby. I actually hate this place. So, I stopped buying there. I’ve spent probably $300 there and they lost me as a customer over one $3 rummy nose tetra. Monster Aquarium = garbage.

I have Bennett customer of them for years. I have purchased mostly MBU puffers from John . I am so very happy with him; the store and his fish. I am also happy with emergency services people he hooks me up with when I need it (“Neil”) . It’s a wonderful place abd I have a 1000 gal tank filled with beautiful mbu puffers to prove it. His store is the best store in Queens without any Question. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Well beautiful fish I cannot dent that hands down!!!!...... will it survive is another story while no fish can survive a bad trip to a new home it’s safe to say they still might die on a safe trip, don’t ever let the elderly lady get your fish or plants she will destroy on contact, whenever any of them go in the tanks it bound to look different after there isn’t no time taken to care about stress levels of other fish in the tank so the next person will get a half dead fish as well.... I seen a salesman shake all the driftwood and break the back of a ropefish I just looked at him and he had no care, I don’t see him around anymore thank god. I’m still a customer there because they have a selection like no other but the care they show to you as a customer and the animals they sell is just pathetic. The owner himself makes you want to just leave with his carelessness but if you stay on them when they do everything and let them know to go easy they obviously will but just know before you came that fish or shrimp was banged up by them when the last customer asked for a fish and they dipped in and shook it all up

Have maintained excellent selection of fish throughout the pandemic. Love coming in here for all types of invertebrates. Have found a variety of “different” fish other than what you see at other aquarium or big box stores. Have been coming here since moving back to NY and will be coming back for all my fish needs without disappointment! Great selection of shrimp, snails and plants!! Highly recommended if you are looking for your “go to store” that has a huge variety, healthy fish and overall great vibe.

This store has amusing selection of species and their varieties. I recommend the visit to any Aquatic Hobbyist. You can find here almost every kind of fish and friendly staff. I have few fish from them and they are strong and healthy. Some rare AngelFish, Bettas and AA grade Fncy Goldfish. Those were my choices. You name it and for sure you will find it here! Don't be decived by simplicity of their website. Store has much more to offer!!!

Beware that the photos of the fish they have on their website is only when they first get them in. The fish begin to perish after a certain amount of days. I am glad i came to the store instead of ordering online. (They didn’t have a pick up option anyways. ) The fish looked healthy on their website but when i walked in the store it was a catastrophic tragedy. Worm man with glasses forgot why he started the business in the first place. His initial love for fish has become lust for monetary gain.

Knowledgeable & friendly staff. Large selection of fish & other aquatic animals. They had what most pet stores didn’t. Also the prices are very affordable. I will definitely be returning. Just a heads up, there’s no parking on the block of the aquarium. However, there’s a parking lot across the street. Otherwise, Monster Aquarium is highly recommended. It’s a dope spot! 🐠🐟🐡🎏

As many other reviews have stated monster aquarium does have a great selection of fish. However the quality of the fish and the quality of service leaves a lot to be desired. I’ve been there multiple times over the past year. The last time I was there was a few days ago. There were times I was quoted a price on an item just to find it increased when I got to checkout. They handle the fish very roughly which results in a high mortality rate. On top of that the tanks are often overcrowded and a little dirty depending on the tank. They wont blink twice about selling you a dead fish or shrimp so make sure you check the bag. The employees seem annoyed that you came in and are not very helpful at all. Overall I wish I could recommend this place but unfortunately I’ve had too many bad experiences with them to continue shopping here. If you read many of the other low reviews they all mention employee rudeness, sick/dead fish, and shady practices. The owner usually responds by saying they don’t give refunds on fish that were killed after they were brought home but your fish are in bad condition to begin with. That combined with your shady practice of price switching and selling dead animals makes me not wanna shop there. And on an unrelated note, it’s super humid and hot in there. That’s not really their fault, just wanted to mention it.

Great selection of fish and live plants you won't find most places. Fish are healthier than most chain stores like petco. They do sell fish who are unhealthy and as someone else noted. If your new to the hobby, they will not stop you from buying fish as that's what happened to myself. If you educate yourself on what a healthy or sick fish looks like, quarantine and medicate your fish you will have a higher chance of success. Tbh, it would be very expensive to do that from a business standpoint and still be profitable. At minimum it would be nice to at least have 72 hour livestock return do policy. If you understand, the above and what your dealing with. Your experience should be fine.

Rude ! We use to love this place, after the phone call conversation with them today, they lost a great customer. They have a NO RETURN policy and I get it. My fish look sick and ask if they can provide and help and he said NO - However, hanging up on someone is UNACCEPTABLE shove your fish up the you know where. We will find a better place to purchase fish from. KARMA is right around the corner.

Ordered fish to be delivered to me . Not only the weather was 20 degrees overnight .The fish came packaged perfectly . I ordered fish online before and this is one of the best packaged live fish I’ve received . Delivery was fast and in time. Even after acclimating the fish in my tank they were healthy and started swimming around immediately . Prices are good and overnight shipping is very reasonable compared to competitors . As soon as I placed my order I gave them a call and gave them a preference . They listened and delivered . Thank you very much . Will purchase again .

I ordered some congo puffer from this store. They were a pretty rare find as not many places have them. The price was very reasonable and I liked that I could order them online and have them shipped avoiding having to drive through NYC. Despite the fedex drivers attempt to kill the fish they are all still alive. The person that packed up the box did a really good job at protecting them.

Unfortunately this place is not what I expected!! Fine yes the selection is great and owner is nice but when it comes to fish knowledge this is terrible! They wont tell you how to properly care and what fish to put in tank according to size. Again I’m a new hobbyists and they even tested my water and yes they did notice ammonia. They still sold me the fish( way more than what the tank could hold) they are all dead know I wasn’t sure what to do with the ammonia. Careless owners and employees I drove all the way from Brooklyn to this place. Very disappointed

I bought a pom Pom crab and that was fine but the bag it came in had a hole in it. Water was leaking everywhere on the way home. Additionally, there was a tank in the basement where there were a school of red parrot fish, they were like $30 each. That tank was nasty. Yellow water, and there were sick and dead fish in it.

This place has a very good selection of fish and lots of oddball fish. There were no dead fish in the fish tanks and the staff were quite knowledgeable on fish and were quick to answer on available stock. I did see some deformed fish in some tanks but overall the fish there were healthy and colorful. Prices were fair as well. I'd buy from this place again!

Monster aquarium has a great selection but SO MANY of the fish are dead in the tanks. At least half the tanks had fish that were visibly sick or dead fish, turtles and frogs just floating spreading disease. Also, the cichlids had terrible coloration; the Geophagus, Discus, and sevrums looked like they were fed with cardboard flakes. Many of the fish without scales; Ghost Knives, Elephant Noise, and clown loaches had infections. I left without buying anything. I figure any fish i get from them would infect my tanks.I feel bad for the fish in this place. Great Selection of poorly cared for and sick fish. So many awesome fish- why don’t you guys just take care of them and sell more as a result?

Awesome store. I only go in to buy a couple nano fish or small plants once in a while, but it's so cool to see all the giant creatures they have. I guess people are buying them! I will say, though: They get very busy. They probably won't have time to answer every question you have, so you should do your research beforehand and know what you're looking for when you go in. If it happens to be a slow day, then you can ask them their thoughts on whether watts per gallon is an appropriate metric for lighting or whatever lol.

Selection is great, there’s a basement with bigger fish. The pricy stuff is down there. After spending about $300 in two weeks, I had 5% of the fish die within 24 hours. It’s not terrible but they don’t guarantee alive on arrival and unlike most internet sellers, they don’t give discounts here or add extra. The customer service depends on the person helping. One guy doesn’t have the best people skills, he’s a bit surly, and mildly argumentative. I asked for cholla, he argued that cholla wood is pronounced chola instead of choy-ah. Sir, it’s not chola. The usual guy on the register is fine, and the girl will duck away on her phone mid order. I suppose I’ll be back but mainly because of the parking is easy and BJ’s is right there.

I recently visited an aquarium store and I have to say, it was an incredible experience. From the moment I walked in, I was blown away by the vast selection of fish, plants, and aquarium equipment. The staff at this store were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They were eager to answer any questions I had and were always willing to help me find the perfect items for my aquarium. Their expertise was evident, and they were clearly passionate about what they do. The store itself was immaculately clean and organized, which made it easy to navigate and find what I was looking for. The aquariums were all beautifully maintained, and the fish looked healthy and happy. The store also had a great selection of plants and decorations, which made it easy to create a personalized and visually appealing aquarium setup. One of the things that really stood out to me about this store was their commitment to customer satisfaction. They offered a variety of services, including water testing and aquarium setup, which made it clear that they genuinely cared about their customers' success in the hobby. They also had a fantastic return policy, which gave me peace of mind knowing that I could easily exchange or return any items that didn't work out for me. Overall, I would highly recommend this aquarium store to anyone who's passionate about fishkeeping or looking to get started in the hobby. The staff, selection, and atmosphere were all top-notch, and I can't wait to go back and see what new items they have in stock. This store truly exceeded my expectations, and I'm confident that anyone who visits will have a similarly positive experience.

OMG! What a Goldmine! I love this place! I went to several places in the area yesterday scouting out a place that was not a chain store and my last stop was this place. I am so excited to have found it. It's clean, packed with finds, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. A small space loaded with just about anything you could possibly need for fish AND they also carry some other fun creatures. I live an hour away in Brooklyn, but whenever I can, I will definitely make the trip. And since they are in NY the water parameters will be close to mine, which a definite plus over ordering online. YAY! Don't walk, run to this place.

The worst customer service ever. Very bad mannered staffs working here who are not helpful at all. As far as fish I bought from this place, they are sick and not healthy. Some had ich and some other parasite. They do not last much. I doubt most of good rating of this place is by the owner and staffs themselves not real customers. No reason to give a good rating to this place at all

Everywhere you turn there is lot of stuff packed into this store. So many options, and price ranges, for everyone. You'll find what you're looking for and leave with more, without breaking your budget......maybe just a little.

They get a 2 from me. Walked in on my 2nd visit there to get a 10g rimless that I spoke to someone else the day prior with some hardscape and plants and before I can grab and get it the employee on duty with the blue hair tells me, a 30yr fish keeper/hobbyist "you're not gonna want that. It doesn't have a lid..." I'm a fabricator that can cut my own lid and be good. There stock is amazing just about everything under the sun BUT never felt so disrespected by being told what I want and need. I'm not argumentive I just walked out not really wanting to fish keep anymore.

Terrible. My friends called for pricing and they stated prices higher than their website. My friends said it’s lower on the site then next thing they saw few minutes after getting off the phone was the prices going up 25% per fish. Bad business practices.

What a store! Only thing missing is plants :( I'm an aquascape enthusiasts and this is definitely not a store to get exotic plants. But! I cannot deduct any points from them because that's not what they're going for. Exotic fish is their specialty and they do a great job at that. Kinda a spooky place, like a mad scientist laboratory.. great staff

Visited Saturday morning with my 4 year old son. Ostensibly, the trip was for me to buy some aquatic plants, but I knew my son would love looking at the fish while I browsed. And he did love it--as well as the two sweet kitties that live in the shop. I was impressed with the selection of invertebrates--I saw pom-pom crabs, golden clams, many many types of crawfish/crayfish, including CPO dwarf ones. I was very tempted to buy one of each of the tiny inverts but I reminded myself that I should go home and research tank compatibility first! Instead, we bought some cabomba and moss balls. It seems that they only have freshwater specimens, which is fine with me, but I'm pointing that out in case saltwater enthusiasts stumble upon the listing. Lots of tank gear too--though the shop is so tiny and crowded that you should plan to do all your research beforehand rather than reading package descriptions while standing in the aisles. I will definitely be back! (But maybe not with my son because he wanted to buy all the goldfish.)

MA has a ton of variety from plants to fresh water fish. At one point it was my go to shop for freshwater needs but in most recent visits i’ve noticed a rise in sick fish. Unsure what’s going on but if they’re able to change that, they will become the best shop in nyc once again. I would recommend if fish are being treated for an illness to have that clearly indicated for customers to see. Because we al understand, fish get sick and letting us know - goes a long way especially if they are still being sold.

I am rating based on two experiences I had with Monster. I bought shrimp from them to add into an existing shrimp colony. After a couple of days my entire shrimp colony was infested with ellobiopsidae, a deadly parasitic disease that is NOT curable (nearly impossible to cure) once shrimp show even the slightest symptoms. This disease is super rare to encounter if shrimp are kept in at least clean water. I did expect them to come with bacterial or fungal infection but having ellobiopsidae means the shrimp were imported from an extremely dirty and cheap source. I only managed to save the shrimp that have not shown symptoms. Half my shrimp colony died as a result. Another time I went in and saw a betta fish that was almost dead. I asked the owner to rescue the fish for free, or if not, give me a large discount. He refused both my offers and only said I could buy for $10 instead of the original price $12. I asked him to reconsider because the fish was about to die and no one would want this fish. The owner said “then let it die. I’m not selling it to you for cheaper than $10.” Even big chain pet stores give at least 50% off on semi dead animals if somebody wants to rescue them. Such cold blooded people that have no passion or compassion for fish or just this aquarium hobby in general. I am never going to Monster again because these people are just like their shop name, a bunch of monsters.

I bought a 71 gal. AIO setup and when I got home found the cabinet and tank frame damaged. I immediately called the shop and they were very understanding and told me to take whole setup back for a replacement. Although it was a long trip back and forth with Queens traffic I finally got the new tank home. Upon setting it up I couldn't get the front control panel to come on and after trying to trouble shoot it via email and landline I still couldn't get it to work. The owner John offered to come to my home to troubleshoot it. He drove all the way to Manhattan from his home on his day off to fix the problem. Turns out the front panel control module was defective , he was prepared and even bought extra parts with him. Monster Aquarium goes the extra mile with their customer service. A+++ I am definitely a customer for life and well worth the commute to the store. Anyone looking for the perfect aquarium store this it. You have to check it out in person. Thanks again !

The fish are amazing, rare importants from all over the world, the equipment is perfect too. My only problem is a worker started to follow me and my brother around and give us trouble for using our phones despite everyone else on theirs, odd.
