Very good Italian restaurant with a nice ambience throughout. We started with the polpo which was spectacular! The bread and butter starter was also very good with a dash of salt in the butter. The cavatelli arrabiata was nicely cooked but under seasoned and not spicy at all. The bucatini was very good. The cocktails and wine service were also good. And of course the staff was top-notch and very accommodating.

Food 4/5 The salmon was the perfect crisp and rareness, the seasoning was just right and the sauce that came along was slightly sour. Super delicious overall. The bucatini was al dente, but a little soft for my liking. Also slightly too much salt but amazing overall, as a lover of seafood, I enjoyed the clams. The portions may look small, but they filled me up a good amount. The biggest thing with the bucatini was I wish it was less salty so the other flavors could come out. Interior 5/5 Absolutely marvelous. Such a vibe with the bronze and dark turquoise palette. Very clean and minimalistic, elegant and upscale. Bathrooms were super clean with Malin and Goetz soap and moisturizer. Service 5/5 Our waiter was super nice and had great recommendations, lovely attitude as well :)

Oh wow, what an amazing experience we had celebrating my boyfriend's birthday at that place! I mean, who wouldn't want to sit at a not-so-great table surrounded by a big group, right? It was just the perfect setting for a peaceful and enjoyable date, let me tell you. And let's not forget the attention to detail they displayed when they asked for a picture and food preference beforehand. I mean, why bother asking if they don't actually check or care about what you request? It's truly mind-blowing. The place itself had a "decent ambiance" (if that's what you call it) and a "great location" (as if that makes up for everything else). Getting there was a breeze, though, with all the available parking areas and convenient subway access. So at least they got that right. Now, let's dive into the highlight of the evening - the food. Brace yourself for the vast array of vegetarian options they had... or should I say, the lack thereof. But hey, they kindly reassured us that "everything can be made vegetarian" (how thoughtful), even though their server was about as helpful as a broken compass. Oh, and did I mention how they rushed us to place our order? It was such a delightful experience being pushed to make decisions before we were ready. Truly, the epitome of great service. But hey, let's not be too harsh. The cocktails and wine were actually good (surprisingly), and some of the dishes like the soup and appetizer managed to be decent. Unfortunately, the pasta and risotto were just... average. So, in conclusion, if you're looking for a place with "great" ambience, "decent" food, and "not-so-great" service, this is the perfect spot for you. They really know how to exceed expectations... or not.

Portable is a pretty fine dining restaurant with a changing menu that tries to fits most guests. Reservations are required ahead to make sure you get your spot. This place gets very busy during dinner time. Although we arrived just on time, our table wasn’t ready and we had to wait for another 20-30 minutes. However, it was worth the wait. Service was nice, food was absolutely delicious. We choose the bread and butter (the butter was so good and special), tuna tartare, was pretty good to share. We also ordered the pasta and the duck. Both served separately for two people (they split when you say you share). Both were well cooked and with really good flavors. Desert was also good. Can’t wait to go back for another great dining experience. (They offer indoor for vaccinated people and outdoor dining as well).

Wow! This is the place to go if you actually want to hear the conversation. What an 5 star experience. Fantastic, hip venue. Stellar service. Went with the gf and got a corner table. Volume and vibe were fantastic. Bread through dessert was phenomenal. We got the kale and seafood salads to start. Then had the salmon and duck. Presentation on everything was as thoughtful as the art work.

The location is perfect. It’s in the city and easily accessible but hard to find a parking spot (no wonder, it’s in downtown/Chelsea area). Space is small with nice smell and decorations. As this is a fancy Italian restaurant, it is needless to say that you need to order small multiple dishes in order to be full and satisfied. Their cocktails are exceptionally good and want to keep it coming. When the dishes came, my appetite has already been enhanced with the tasty pleasant smells. Spaghetti is the best I have ever had. I completed my day with Pistachios ice cream. It was such an unexpectedly amazing food tasting experience for me.

We came here for our anniversary and had an amazing dining experience. The food was delicious - the tuna appetizer and lobster pasta were my favorites of the night. The service was outstanding as well. We will definitely be back!

Went for brunch today, extremely disappointed. Service was cold, unfriendly, and slow. Cocktail arrived after food did. Server decided to course our food without asking or telling us that she did that, and left us wondering why our cinnamon bun side was not served with our main course. Never checked back in once to ask about drink refills or how the food was. Bucatini alla gricia was incredibly small for $22 and featured such a minuscule amount of guanciale it was laughable. Disappointing all around.

Excellent! Gorgeous room. Spot on acoustics for an enjoyable dinner conversation. Meals had a beautiful presentation and were just as delicious. Definitely get a reservation before this restaurant is to hard to book one.

Exceptionally nice dinner especially the exquisitely seasoned duck served with pears and the most delicious wild rice I’ve had in my life! The frutti di mare was fresh but the pomodoro pasta dish was very oversalted. The meatballs were incredibly good, so were the bombolini. Excellent service and great atmosphere. A must place to go.

We lucked out picking this as our 'italian dinner' on our short NYC visit. We made a reservation then later changed the time when plans fell through. Their system is a little delayed with confirmation and does require a card. We arrived a few minutes early and we're directed to the bar. The bar and atmosphere and drinks were so delicious that we lost track of time realizing we'd been left there 50 minutes and had been overlooked. Well, the Maitre made up for this graciously with the bar tab, a delicious appetizer of seafood, and dessert. Highly recommend as an excellent NYC fine dining experience, Mediterranean style Italian.

The moment you step in, you will feel the quality of the this restaurant. The atmosphere and food were outstanding. We had meatballs, octopus, pasta, desert and opened up a decent bottle of red wine. Gotta tell you that meatball was my favorite in all of them. The bill was slightly over $100/pp. I would say based on the quality and experience you get, it is well worth the price. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a fine dining in NYC. Will definitely be back here again.

The pork chop was delicious! Very tender, juicy and cooked to perfection. The beetroot salad with goat cheese had also good taste but the amount of cheese was very minimal, so it wasn’t worth it. The host at the entrance was not very accommodating. Probably I would give it a second chance cause the main dish hit a spot!

I went to the restaurant last Friday for a solo dining at 5pm, since I couldn’t tell the availability from the online reservation system. There were more than eight seats in the bar area, and I was able to grab one of them. I ordered the lobster pasta(Mafaldine), duck breast(Anatra) and Cannoli for dessert. Every one is tasty, especially the first two. The wavy pasta was really chewy and a pinch of chili was just enough to hedge the heaviness. For the duck breast, the sweet and sour flavor of the jus made the dish quite balanced. Will come back for more dishes.

Our evening at PORTALE was nothing short of perfection! The food was spectacular - from start to finish. Our Server suggested the "bread" (Focaccia) as a starter and we thought meh . . . bread? What's the big deal . . but when "bread " starter plate arrived it blew our mind! Bread!! Go figure. Every subsequent plate was the same - our second appetizer was the CRUDO DI TONNO (yellowfin tuna tartare, cucumber, radish calabrian chili, citrus emulsion). For mains I had the: MAFALDINE (maine lobster, calabrian chili, lemon-basil butter) which was perfectly aldente, and both rich and subtle in flavor. Have not stopped thinking about it since! My husband had the MAIALE (country-rib pork chop, polenta, roasted baby peppers, apple conserva) - and honest to god, it was the BEST pork chop either of us have ever had (yes, I stole quite a few bites!). For desert we had the BOMBOLONI - which is basically like home-made fluffy, delectable donut holes - with chocolate sauce, maple-bourbon anglaise to dip them in. Exquisite! ALL of our WAITSTAFF were also lovely, quick and friendly, perfectly "present" but not overdone, added to the enjoyment of the experience as a whole. We'll be back many times over - what a delight it was to dine here!

Stumbled across Portale on our way to the Affordable Art Fair opposite and feel like we discovered a gem. Very busy, so other people knew something we didn't (feels like a bit of a 'scene' inside, but not too much by New York standards) but the food and the service were exceptional. The host was incredibly accommodating, our waiter was so charming (effusive and funny, but not too much) and the food and cocktails were to die for. Had the tomato salad (special), burrata and lobster pasta (also a special) and everything was well seasoned, fresh and wanted more.

One of the best Italian places in town. Very good food. Burrata app was soft and yummy with yellow beets that were crisp and fresh. She had the meatballs app which were some of the best meatballs she has ever had. Main courses of cavatelli with red sauce and the special lobster pasta were both extremely good. Desserts were super good also. We had olive oil cake, chocolate mousse, and budino (a light custard). She also had the affogato which she loved. This place is fun and very good. We really liked it and will be back for sure. Whitney was our server and she was excellent. Check out all of our reviews. We were IMPRESSED. The food here is outstanding to say the least. Chef Portale has created a inviting space to relax while enjoying the amazing food. Our server was also accommodating...even while taking care of a very large group right near us. No matter...it is the food that dazzled and was awe-inspiring. One standout among standouts was the cavatelli...homemade twists with a beautiful red sauce...the surprise was the cilantro pesto that accompanied and it was so other wordly, ethereal and unreal. We couldn't get enough!!One "sour" note...it was a bit noisy. No biggie because the food was so loud that it almost didn't matter. WOW is not enough to describe Portale.

WOW! The meal was just indescribable and I loved every molecule that entered my mouth. My friend and I actually took the train up from Maryland just for the day to see a show (and of course do some eating!). Your staff was so welcoming and friendly! And patient with my menu questions and struggle to pick want to order because I wanted everything but we were trying not to over eat. We ordered the Frutti di Mare and then the Agnolotti and the halibut. We shared everything and they plated it separately for each of us (pasta in one dish). Portions were still very satisfying!! Can I just tell you, that halibut was perhaps the best halibut I have ever had, and maybe one of the tastiest bites I have ever had. That first light crunch of the truffle crust and then the perfect firm but melting texture of the fish. I could barely contain myself and delicious moans coming out of me. The Agnolotti, rich but so perfectly balanced and not overpowering and SO many mushrooms, i was actually happy with the amount. The meal was just indescribable and I loved every molecule that entered my mouth. My friend and I spent 2 weeks eating through Spain back in September...we LOVE delicious food. For me, this meal was just spectacular!! (as was every person we interacted with). Truly hope to come again in the future!

We ordered about half of the menu for our table of 8 people. It's pretty rare that every single dish is a win when ordering at a restaurant, but everything we got was SO GOOD! Our server Analise was attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. The rest of the staff was on top of it was clearing and water refills. I normally don't go to the same restaurant twice (as NYC has too many options😝) but I will definitely be back!

Went back form my 2nd experience at Portale, this one during covid. We sat outside on the very beautiful 18th street cityscape. This place again knocked it out of the park for us, as we expected. The service, especially the waiter Dan, and atmosphere is amazing and Adam Longworth continues to produce masterpieces in the kitchen. A must on you places to go if you are looking for fine dining and great food

Last night was the second time I dined at Portale. Food, wine and service were excellent. We had soft shell crab and bread to start. My lobster pasta special was tasty and delicious. My husband had pork chop and the polenta was like a soufflé. Olive oil cake was light and perfect finish to the meal. We sat outside and had a lovely evening in NYC.

Came here for my daughter's birthday and my anniversary. It was amazing. First, my father in law is SUPER picky. It's hard to find restaurants he likes. He *loved* everything he ate (minus the meatballs). He ate all of the lobster pasta special and most of his olive oil cake. He tried my daughter's risotto and her girlfriend's truffle pasta, and he gobbled it all up. The rest of my family enjoyed every bite of their meals, which is less significant given we aren't picky eaters. But everything was delicious. Our waitress was lovely and we couldn't be happier. Thank you Portale!

i ordered the burrata, which is roasted beets, poached stone fruit, pistachio (as an appetizer)—not pictured. i ordered their bread (which yes you have to pay for, but was so worth). i also got their “special of the day” pasta (which i believe is seasonal). i don’t remember what it’s called but it was a lobster pasta. i also ordered their chocolate mousse cake that comes with sorbet and toffee. everything— and i mean everything, completely exceeded my expectations. they have a contemporary take on italian food, so it’s smaller portions, but incredibly refined dishes, as opposed to large family-style shared meals. every dish was so incredibly carefully crafted. the flavors were perfectly balanced and nuanced so you can experience all of the subtleties. the pasta dish was exceptional— the pasta itself was a perfect al dente and had large chunks of extremely fresh lobster meat infused in a tomato-based sauce that was rich in flavor and slightly zesty. i would highly recommend coming and giving this place a try.

The food is out standing!! I was mind blown how my pork chop came out tasting so tender and flavourful with a side of crispy polenta cake. The service is attentive and our sommelier is such a character and wonderful guy. Instead of describing how wonderful a particular wine taste like, we get to sample it right away and let the wine speak for itself. The suggestion compliment well with our dishes. The dining room is well space out and dont feel like you are sitting elbow to elbow to other diners and the music is soft enough to have conversation without the need to raise your voice like in so many places. Highly highly recommended Italian place in Chelsea area.

We really enjoyed dinner at Portale - amazing hospitality, top-notch service, and refined food. Formal and classy interior. Our server was attentive and friendly throughout our dining experience. Above average wine list. I recommend ordering a number of their "Primi" pasta dishes to share for dinner (all portions aren't huge, so savor each bite!). Another highlight is their ricotta meatballs! Our food came out surprisingly quick after we ordered. Skip the branzino dish.

  • 3/5 Ryan N. 2 years ago on Google
Food was good, but not amazing. I think we were expecting more based on previous reviews. In terms of value, we were spending $115 per person on the prix fix menu for Thanksgiving, and I guess we weren’t expecting upcharges for certain dishes. At the end of the day, maybe we should have been prepared to spend $800 for 4 people but we weren’t. The upcharges and 4 $20-30 cocktails added up I guess. Maybe Portale is something more special when it’s not a holiday, but we can’t shake the feeling of not getting enough culinary magic for our hard earned dollar, even in an expensive city.

  • 5/5 Kirat A. 2 years ago on Google
Great food fun cocktails, can't go wrong with either their lamb chops or branzino - if you don't mind sharing getting both of them. They have one of the Best cheesecakes in the city - even non-cheesecake lovers, like me, opt in for their ricotta cheesecake. Nice hack - enjoy drinks and small plates at the bar for their reduced happy hour menu.

We were 5 people and had a big oval marble dining table at the window. It was really lovely seat and we were able to have an intimate time. Service and atmosphere are also amazing and of course food is fantastic! We've tried beef tartare, meat balls, risotto, pasta, halibut and 4 desserts. Every single dishes were so perfect! 👍👍👍

Great Italian place. I'm not sure if it's specifically Sicilian focused, but when we went they had special Sicilian dishes and discounts on Sicilian wines. The Burrata was the best that I have had in a while, with a firm outside and very creamy and delicious inside. The Frutti Di Mare was great as all the flavors blended well and it was not overwhelmingly fishy as many salads are. For pasta, we had a Lobster Special and the Lumache. Both were delicious, bu we enjoyed the Lumache just a little more. Simple, and not overpowered with Truffle flavor. For the mains, we had the Branzino and Maiale. The Branzino was perfectly made and amazing. But, I would not order the Maiale again. It was okay, but dry and felt dense. We finished with a Torta Di Olio, which was fine, but I don't love most cakes in general. We also had a Panna Cotta, which was enjoyable, but didn't stand out compared to any other classy Italian restaurant.

The food doesn't look impressive coming out of the kitchen but we really enjoyed the flavors. The breakfast bruschetta and kale salad were both really good. The hamburger was perfectly done. We were split on the eggs Benedict, with one enjoying it and the other feeling the saltiness and flavor of the speck were overbearing. Service was fine. We couldn't quite get the ambience they're going for, part modern, part country. All in all it was worth the stop for brunch.

I loved everything about this place. The art deco meets MCM. I came for lunch and sat at the bar. Amazing service, everyone was very hospitable. They have specials on drinks for lunch which is nice so I got the negroni. I opted for the caesar salad and the mafaldine for the $28 prix fixe. The pasta was so delicious, the carrots and other vegetables were a nice touch in the Bolognese. Definitely coming back again! Portions were perfect for lunch.

I was immediately impressed with the energy of the restaurant. It is also nicely designed with a portico and has the feeling of a residence. Server staff were efficient and pleasant and the bartender was great. You could tell he knew what he was doing and even created his own version of some drinks. The burrata salad was a great start with beets and that wonderful cheese. The dish did not feel heavy at all. The Lumache with the short ribs was flavorful and rich. The portion was quite small for the price, but good. The staff paired the wines well. The chef was walking around and the Portale had a very neighborly festive atmosphere. I will return. However, like much of this area a glass of wine, salad and small pasta dish will approach 80 bucks with tip.

Amazing food atmosphere and buzz. It's nice to see Italian food served with care , and thought. Sometimes people take for granted basic Italian dishes as simple and ignore the potential of the flavors... Portale clearly understands that even simple dishes should make you say, "WOW!!! ....

Spectacular addition to the NYC Italian dining scene. So the meatball sliders are just incredible. I could have doubled up right there and been done. How can meatballs taste this good? Moved on to the crudo hamachi which was out of this world. Then we shared a Kale salad that was farm to table amazing. Did i say our server Sarah was wonderful? She helped us design our meal. Paired with a great Niboloa and French white burgundy. But the pastas are the best in the city. Served al dente to perfections. We shared the ragu pasta that was just out of this world and then the special pesto duck fennel sausage pasta that was spicy and wonderful. Topping it all off with the tiramisu and expresso gelato. Every aspect of the meal was just a wonderful experience. And although we were late for our reservation they were nice enough to not rush us at the end. This is NYC dining at its best!
