Good spot for Austrian, German food. The food is great. However, a little pricy for what you get - the schnitzels are very expensive (they are just meat cutlet). It has pub vibes and the service is good. I would recommend trying it! Beef goulash was my favourite.

We stopped in here at the beginning of our German food tour of NY on a Monday night. The staff was super friendly and let my girlfriend take a 30m work call before we even ordered anything. The vibe is incredible -- wood and brick with classic German music pulsing from the bar. We ordered a couple of beers (get the Spaten Oktoberfest if it's available!) and a pretzel to start. The obadza was fantastic with the pretzel, which was hot and a perfect starter. Then we moved onto the main course with an Emmentaler Sausage and Jägerschnitzel. A lot of the German spots I hit, the Jäger is actually just wienerschnitzel (Austrian-style) with mushroom sauce on top. But because the owner at Katja's is very authentically Austrian, the Jäger is a fantastic unbreaded schnitzel with real mushrooms piled on top. And the sausage comes with actual Knödeln, which are a fantastic pairing. The portions are HUGE, so don't shy away from the prices. Overall, we were very impressed with the staff who frequently checked up to make sure we had everything we needed, the atmosphere which brought us back to our visits to small European holes-in-the-wall, and the food which was as authentically Austrian as it gets. Fantastic place to come if you're looking for a German/Austrian getaway!

Weiner schnitzel was awesome. Almost spring spaetzle was VERY heavy on the veggies and light on cheese, but tasty. Pretzel was fine but honestly did not deserve the rave reviews it gets on here.

This place is in the heart of the LES. The food was delicious even after the next day when I brought home some leftovers. The service staff was friendly. The restaurant itself is nice too. The only thing that brought the review down is the cost. It could have been not as pricey. As good as it is, the price was high. Thank you for a lovely meal!

Great brunch spot! They have a really good selection of food and drinks. I really enjoyed the food, it was delicious and everything was cooked perfectly and the presentation was nice. Make sure to try their sausages, it was really good.

To be honest, the food is just ok - nothing special (compared to authentic German & Austrian food) It is very pricey for what you get. Especially for a deep fried vs a pan fried Schnitzel of what you could expect if you are familiar with Schnitzel. They advertise a “Wiener” Schnitzel (which is supposed to be made with veal) but serve a pork Schnitzel. It is still tasty but a bit of a tourist trap. Hope that helps and “Guten Appetit”

Very cute, friendly joint which offers yummy Austrian food, fun drinks all in a cozy atmosphere. The outdoor seating situation is really great for people watching, whether you want sun or shade. Pet friendly too! 🐕

While in Manhattan, I had a taste for German food, and my friend who lived there recommended Cafe Katja. What an excellent experience. The atmosphere was really nice (although slightly loud on a crowded weekend evening, but to be expected). The beer selection (Hofbrau, Spaten, etc.) was right up my alley. And the food was excellent. I went with the Goulash with absolutely no regrets. Our entire party loved it. I promptly returned on my next visit to the area, and plan to return again. Recommend.

Came for brunch on a Sunday at noon. Pet friendly establishment - we sat outside with our dog and they gave him a water bowl. The food is delicious. Don’t miss the asparagus menu - We loved the vinaigrette one. The buttermilk pancake is a must too. Would definitely come back

Came here for some after work drinks and small bites. We were able to be seated quickly. Nice list of cocktails and they have an extensive beer list. As for small bites, highly recommend the pretzel. They're small so would recommend one per person. Huge fan of the mustard. The charcuterie boards are interesting as they only have one cheese and one meat but not a combination of both which was unfortunate since one of us couldn't have cheese and another couldn't have pork/meat. We ended up sticking with the meat platter and the patte was great. Would consider coming back for dinner.

One of my favorite restaurants in the city, have come for many occasions, including using Wi-Fi and their lovely espresso. Recommend the sausage dishes, pretzel with spreads, fried potatoes, and spaetzel. Also I dropped some cash on the floor one night that I came for dinner, and they kept it aside for me! Great people.

Have to be brutally honest here (as much as it pains me)… I was excited for the Schnitzel based on all of the photos/reviews - - but almost irregardless of the price (and it wasn’t cheap imho) > it was utterly flavorless. It came with some peeled/boiled? potatoes and some lingonberry jam on the side which was the only saving grace to add some flavor to the dish (my fault for not asking for some salt & pepper). Potatoes had zero seasoning, the Schnitzel itself seemed to lack seasoning in the bread coating (very bland despite being doused with lemon juice). The only thing that had some flavor was the little side-salad which had some nice pickled onions on-top. The Schnitzel itself was pounded super thin and was lifeless (the only way to describe it). I also had a lackluster pretzel which was saved by the delicious cheese spread that came with it. On a more positive note, I was excited to see a couple of fantastic hefeweizen beers on the menu (in-particular I recommend the König Ludwig hefeweizen which they had on-tap). I’m born & raised in Germany, and have fairly high standards when it comes to food from the region, and have to say I am stunned at the 4.7 star rating for this place. Decent ambiance, good presentation & staff was pleasant… but for the money I think I would probably only come back for the beer.

Very nice German/Austrian restaurant, prices of the food are a bit on the high side, but you get well cooked and big portions. The drinks are relatively cheaper, and the beer selection is very good. All in all definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for German/Austrian food!

    4. Came here for a quick drink and snack before dinner. The menu looks great and would have loved to stay and eat some more of the European classics. The atmosphere was nice- we sat outside, but it was a Saturday night and the place was pretty empty which was weird- perhaps it draws a later crowd. The beer list was good and the pretzel was great. It came with butter and what they said was cheese (didn’t taste like cheese- more like cheesy butter?) and Dijon! It’s in a great neighbourhood with lots of other bars and restaurants nearby- great for a quick drink. There are steps to get inside.

Tasty Austrian/German food, awesome and friendly staff, and atmosphere. Recommendations: - Austrian Meatballs $25~ - Reuben $25~ Reuben was well toasted, cheesey, and meaty, served with ranch. The meatballs were excellent for meatball/meatloaf lovers, root veggies were cooked tender and sweet. Looking forward to coming back and trying out the other dishes. We sat at the bar and chatted with some of the staff, and it was clear the staff were enjoying their work and creating a neighborhood spot.

Austrian style food and drinks. First Wiener Schnitzel in New York and it was delicious. Also the Stiegl beer (draft) woke up some memories from vacation in Austria. Super friendly staff and cozy atmosphere on top.

We had both breakfast and dinner at Cafe Katja, and both were great. The food was terrific - heirloom tomato salad was perfect. Ambiance was warm and relaxing, and the service was excellent. Look forward to coming back.

Excellent service! We went for Brunch and everyone in our group each tried a different meal from Pancakes and omlettes to the homemade Bratwurst, all delicious and very well priced! Can't wait to revisit the next time we're in in the neighborhood.

There were 13 of us for brunch. We had a blast. Owner was there chatting with us. Wait staff (Angel) was great. Food was terrific. Try to goulash and the apple strudel. We were there for hours.

Stumbled upon this gem looking for a drink after the Van Gogh experience, but stayed for a lovely dinner. Jägerschnitzel with Spätzle and salad (huge portion!) followed by apple Strudel with Schlag was simply devine! The service was very attentive and the atmosphere cozy and gemütlich. Will definitely be back!
