My surgeon was absolutely phenomenal! I can’t overstate how good my experience with Dr Fragomen was and continues to be. The hospital itself is a well oiled surgical machine, but still retains an intimate feel. The prep area nurses and nursing aids were all very kind. I especially liked my anesthesiologist, who was one of the nicest and most competent I’ve had (sadly I’ve been through enough surgeries to know). The inpatient post-op nurses were a mixed bag, with my discharge experience being a complete mess. I did have a few truly wonderful nurses, but the attention I received seemed to decrease throughout my stay.

I have had many friends who have had knee replacements at HSS and it was like clockwork in terms of preparation and information and attention to detail. My surgery was not that. I brought medication from home as I was requested, and was never given it. I was released with a blood pressure of 85/55 and my surgery did not leave me with good hip function. When I went back for subsequent check-ups, I was told that the x-ray showed things looked well placed.... and they seemed to be looking at my age and other reasons for the lack of mobility I should have been able to get from this surgery. I am deeply sorry I chose this surgery and this hospital experience was lacking... in its attention to care and detail during my stay and my subsequent outcome. I understand that one takes a chance and signs off when you agree to a surgery, but the lack of concern for the outcome is more than disappointing.

Mother went in for a routine muscular hip surgery. This was back in 2019… since then she has dealt with debilitating pain, depression and a almost completely immobility since. Doctors continue to give her the runaround with absolutely no answers. It has now been over three years. Amazing how a place like this can work on “the New York Yankees” and people like “Lady Gaga” but when a normal person comes in looking for a routine procedure they can’t seem to get it correct but continue to bill insurance even with a lack of result, I required an immediate bone marrow transplant at Johns Hopkins and was in and out completely cured in 6 months. If you were looking for any type of orthopedic surgery this is not the place to do it. Travel to Hopkins in Baltimore or elsewhere here in the USA. My poor mother and father are still part of the generation that puts their full trust in doctors. Little do they know the doctors do not care at all about the pain they have caused over the last three years. They only care about the paycheck that comes every two weeks. As long as that is cashed no one cares. Healthcare is dying and so is the art of the physicians touch. My backseat interactions with this hospital are enough to confidently post

I had to have spine surgery in my cervical area and met with four surgeons for options and opinions. I was most impressed with Dr. James Dowdell from the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. Dr. Dowdell and his team were very attentive to all my questions and concerns. He was very clear in explaining his proposal to correct my two level compression in my neck. I decided to have my surgery at HSS because of their reputation as the number one orthopedic hospital in the tri-state area. The entire staff was so kind and caring. From the parking attendant to the receptionist to the nursing staff. I can't say enough about how caring the nurses were. From pre-op to the operating room to post-op. Every nurse was caring and attentive to both my medical and personal needs. I may have back surgery in the future, I will definitely be returning to Hospital for Special Surgery.

HSS is very overrated. It probably had a competitive advantage several years ago, but they are so conceited that they make you sign a document, giving away all your personal medical privacy in one of the poorest written legal documents I've ever read. Worse, is that they give you this document a mere minutes before you're about to go in for surgery. Minutes. Thus, you can either cancel the surgery or sign away all your privacy. It is the most unctuous way of dealing with patients that I've every witnessed. Why don't you receive this document the moment you've confirmed you want to have surgery at HSS with your doctor? Because HSS knows it's probably in the wrong. Thus, you're basically forced to sign this at the tip of sword, if you want to have surgery there. I've had orthopedic surgery at other hospitals where I didn't have to sign away my medical privacy and I had a better outcome. HSS may have the name brand, but not the service. Save your time, money and privacy and find another hospital.

A hospital can't b worst than this, I didn't get even ice therapy after serious knee replacement SURGERY for the next whole day Nurse Makayla left my ice pack in corner window facing sun light to melt n at the end of the day it was found under my bed Then just twenty mins before my discharge,Dr found it ,Dr was shocked n got me new one but only for last 20 mins out of 12 hours I missed the most basic things ice, after surgery. Experience Makayla's svc if u really want to go thru the hell. It was def my nightmare experience as first time patient for the serious knee replacement SURGERY She was continuously making sarcastic comments n made my fun. They can see in cc footage Tc Now again I had second leg surgery on 2/29/24, Pain was just added on top of what I had it, Helping nurse Indira was so rude n nasty, she literally threw ice pack on my delicate surgery leg, hurt me instead of wrapping around the wound, Never came to asked me if I want anything else, whenever she came for her part of duty to check vitals, then she kept her back facing to me like she hates to see my face plus kept screen blocked also so I can't see my own vitals , wow,on top of that she continuously showed her nasty attitude with her body language but still another old woman chito was gem,she saw Indira's nasty treatment to me n supported me n sympathized morally, all on cc footage of management want to see, only reason I chose HSS cuz my skilled surgeon Ty

Coming here for treatment without a referral is like going to a casino. Doctors lack empathy and will spend more time typing, filling out forms, versus making eye contact, speaking to the patient. I never get clear explanations for condition or prognosis. I've come here 3 times and every time, I receive surprise bills that are not covered by insurance. It's best to get a referral from someone you trust, if you are coming here for care. Be prepared to shell out some cash too, even if they accept your insurance.

After much consideration I chose HSS on their reputation and on the very confident Dr. Steven McAnany, who told me no doubt my quality of life would improve after surgery with him. After surgery, I was left with bi-lateral drop foot. I fully understand that there are always risks with surgery, but after meeting with many specialists of equal status I have been told the surgery should have been discontinued when he ran into complications. Dr. McAnany chose a risky route and left me permanently handicap. After weeks in Stamford Hospital then Gaylord Hospital where I spent another 6 weeks learning life skills for the handicapped, how to fall without breaking anything, cook, clean and bathe. I was unable to walk, spending several months in a wheelchair, then to a walker. Three years later, many surgeries, procedures and endless PT, I am able to walk with a brace. SO much more has been taken from me. I’m left on a unlivable fixed disability income, I am a burden to my family and friends who I depend on for so much. The cost has been high physically, emotionally, mentally, financially and spiritually

My mom's knee replacement surgery is tomorrow, so I'm hoping it goes well. But there has been much so far that is so incredibly disappointing (and I hope that's all it is). My mom is a type 1 diabetic and they have done so much wrong so far. It's unclear if anyone within a team speaks to each other, and if anyone is/will be managing her diabetes. No one to answer a question or her calls/texts. This has caused a lot of unnecessary anxiety about the surgery. As my mom says, she's seeing the cracks in the system. And there are too many. I know you say in your answer to reviews that you aim for better care, but your actions say otherwise. She went with HSS over NYU because she thought HSS would be better, and I'm regretting not trying to convince her otherwise.

Excellent hospital doctors are excellent and good bedside manners as well as nurses but staff are rude and have attitudes. I can't keep up with all this covid rules and regulations that they have.. When you enter Noone greets you at least with a smile. Also there is alot of giving the wrong information to family such as myself. My mom had surgery for knee replacement and the woman at family atrium on 4th floor told me I can return and visit her in the recovery room and all of sudden in the afternoon a guy with glasses in the family atrium tells me I can't and that is always been the rule. My mom had surgery before and I visited Noone ever told me that HSS decide to change the rules don't tell all their staff the same rules everyone tells me different information. I come from queens I don't live around the block to just wait for someone to call me and update. Noone updates me anything I have to call my mom every hour or 2 to find out updates how she is and physical therapy and when she will be discharge. If they are going to restricting family member to visit loved ones should be updating and all hospital staff should be on the same when presenting information to family member especially visitors visiting into pacu recovery rooms. I understand covid protocols I work in Healthcare but other place they allow family members in recovery room and update family . You need to train your staff to be more polite and friendly to people. Everyone is so serious and look like they don't like their job.i work in Healthcare I love my job and I always smile and greet everyone your staff should do the same. Not just stare at their computers or phones

There is something serious wrong with HSS’s practice. I had pain in my lower back and my hamstrings and calf are very tight. A PT told me my hamstrings had second degree tears. After many treatments my condition didn’t improve so I went to HSS sports medicine to check up my hamstring. The doctor used ultrasound and said he didn’t see any tears in hamstrings. So I asked why my hamstring is still so tight. He said it could be it’s still healing …… it turns out my adductors are the problem. When I made appointment, I was asked which body part. I said I am not sure maybe it’s my hamstrings so HSS sports medicine doctor only looked at my hamstrings not thinking anything else. A patient goes to hospital like HSS bc conditions couldn’t improved with PT and seeks second opinion but apparently HSS doctor is not thinking or not capable of thinking. It sucks.

My experience over the years with HSS has been uniformly terrible—from my first visit in 2018 through my last visit in 2021. I'm not a celebrity patient with an interesting problem. I'm someone with chronic pain in my arms, hands, and legs. If you don't have a discernible, cut-and-dried condition, I would not recommend HSS. The HSS doctors I've seen have been consistently dismissive, lacking in empathy, and barely cordial at best.

Had my total knee replacement surgery at HSS in April of this year. I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing medical professionals. My doctor Dr. Cushner anesthesiologist, Dr. Green, the physical therapists by name of Denise and there was also a young man, but I forgot his name. And amazing pca her name was Edna. If it wasn’t from them being on my team and making sure I reach my goals. Of getting back my life back to normal. At HSS they want the best for their patients.

I just had a Total Knee replacement at HSS yesterday. As person with a number of past surgeries, I've been impressed with the full spectrum level of care at HSS. Doctor Cushner and his entire team, from office workers down to the nurses were caring, knowledgeable and kind. I didn't plan to spend the night but the care received made it worth while. Unfortunately, I will need to return in the Spring for my other knee but I know that I will be well cared for. Thank you HSS.

Hello My surgeon Dr. Brian Chalmers analyzed and executed an excellent left medial knee replacement on 1.9.2021. From my first encounter Dr.Chalmers , he exhibited insight, calm and certainty. I am a life-long distance runner and racer, sidelined by my condition. he examined X-rays and data, said" I see no reason you will not run again". I was elated. As I write this review I am approaching 3 mos' post surgery. Now pain free in left knee and discussing right knee. Prior to surgery,I researched his credentials; top of his class in med' school and has published papers . His expertise in robotic assist and associated A.I,. makes a leader in his field. I feel fortunate to be associated with Dr. Brian Chalmers.

Best Hospital ever! My mom had surgery here with Dr. Todd who is an amazing doctor, very caring, very trustworthy and very easy to talk to. He made me feel good about the whole process my mother was going through. After surgery, he follow up every single day and she has been perfect afterwards. Dr. Singleton is super friendly and did a great job at keeping her without pain. We really appreciate that. During her stay, every single one who treated her was amazing, very friendly, very caring, but the cherry on the to is Samuel (Sam). He took the time to make us feel like home. Thanks for everything. I couldn’t be more grateful.

I hate giving 1 star but the lack of communication in this hospital was quite shocking. It’s clear notes are not taken between nurses and doctors (for example I had to fight tooth and nail for my basic diabetes medicine; my surgery was openly forgotten about; I had to explain to each nurse why I couldn’t have a medication bc it causes heart problems in my family - they gave it to me any way; endocrinologist said they came to see me to help me get back on my insulin pump but they never did). It made for a very traumatic experience which, as an appendectomy patient, certainly didn’t need to be.

Brought my girl there for knee surgery. Every staff member we interacted with was extremely pleasant and professional. The doctors and nurses were all friendly and informative. In total, we were there for approximately 8 hours. The experience was very pleasant and efficient! RM is doing well and she is on the road to full recovery. THANK YOU!!!

For orthopedic care this is the best place I found on the East Coast. The care is incredible the staff truly understand your immediate care in the doctors are highly trained and skilled. I was there five years ago for cervical surgery and now I will be returning for additional lumbar surgery. I live in South Florida however to have the best care facility I choose to go to New York to this specific place as a result of its excellent previous care.

I had two knee replacement at HSS. The first was my left knee the end of Sept 2015. I fully recovered with mobility and returned to my normal routine. It was imminent that I would need the right knee replacement in the future. That surgery was done the beginning of December 2023. I am now recovering with extensive physical therapy and plan to return to work mid February 2024. Kudos to my surgeon Gregory Difelice, MD and his team! Their professional and compassionate approach in taking care of patients with orthopedic issues was more than I anticipated. I am happy and fortunate to have such a great team that guided me through this difficult process. Blessings!🙏🏾❤️

Be very very careful picking this hospital. I thought this was the best hospital… I have been proved wrong. The recovery department will not notify about your family member after surgery. It is against their policy. Even if the family member gets severe medical issues post anesthesia, they refuse to notify the family member and on top of that they will say that the patient did not have any medical problem. No documentation in the chart about the complications that were suffered by the patient post anesthesia!!! When you contact the treating medical team afterwards, you are given one line answers with No apologies!!! Wow!!! Would NOT recommend this facility!!!

First time here,my wife had hip surgery. When we went for pre admission testing we were told that two people were allowed to visit . We were also told the same thing by security when my son asked as we were leaving. When the staff called with the time of surgery and what time to arrive. When the person told my wife that only one person can accompany her.I had to tell my daughter who came up from Florida that she had to wait for visiting today February 23rd only my daughter can visit. I had to stay home. This place is we ridiculous you aren't allowed to eat while waiting, if you wanted to eat you had to leave the bldg. They have a coffee shop directly across from the waiting area on the fourth floor. This shop sells muffins, candy soda and coffee. I could only buy a drink, why buy anything else if I can't eat it. So after 11 hours of sitting and standing because I'm handicapped and can't sit or stand for long periods of time I had to wait until I knew that my wife was OK and that she would be staying in recovery overnight that I had a sandwich that was in my backpack on the way home. This while employees were purchasing muffins and other edibles 🤣. I worked in a Hospital for 38 years and other than covid have never seen anything like this. Wearing mask I totally understand, limiting visiting to one person I don't agree with. The CDC lifted the limitations that were in place. Two visitors at a time should be allowed, with those two visitors able to come down and switch with others who may be waiting. I strongly believe that it is the patients who keep Hospitals running along with government agencies. Those pts. families should be allowed to eat in the waiting area or a cafeteria. They are stressed waiting for the outcome of the surgery and Handicapped making it difficult to get around. Sorry for rambling. Plus if I didn't ask why no one came out to speak with me about my wife's surgery, one hour after she was in recovery. I probably wouldn't have spoke to the doctor. When after seeing several physicians come out to speak with other patients families. I totally believe that my wife's surgeon had a long day as did I, stressed waiting for someone to come and inform me of how things went with my wife. Stay safe and have a great day

An amazing place. If you must have orthopedic surgery, this is the best place in the US and possibly in the world. Everything is geared to make it easier for patients. If you have a hip problem, Dr. Bryan Kelly is the top hip repair specialist in the country, possibly in the world. Put all your exams, X-rays and MRI together and send them or bring them to him ASAP. He'll look at them and call you if you are within his field of care. He's kind, considered, and even being the top gun at the hospital, he's available to talk to his patients and answer all questions. And he knows all there is to know, and then more, since he does all kind of research, and finds the best way to do what needs done.

I may have had the most disturbing conversation in all my years with a young staff member of the 'Patient Experience Department' (formerly termed the 'Patient Satisfaction' Dept). She knows who she is - our conversation took place on Jan. 30th at approximately 3:30 PM. When I'd complained about a very crucial issue that I know can be remedied, her answer (with NO other explanation) was as follows: "No means 'NO'...that's the answer - NO!" She then hung up abruptly without appropriately terminating the conversation. Is this how patients should be spoken to by a supposed professional staff member in a hospital-based department in a specialized community hospital? I don't think so! Shame on her! She was snippy, nasty, and non-caring. I hope this review receives an appropriate response as this is way more than an issue related to service excellence! A good portion of the staff in the hospital require re-education and at the very least -- sensitivity training! The hospital staff do not consistently show examples of what a 'High Reliability Organization' should demonstrate. Food-for-thought if anyone from their quality department is reading this review!

I had a lower lumbar fusion 4 days ago with Dr Lovecchio. Time will tell the ultimate result, but he was communicative, easy to understand and confidence-inspiring from the first consultation through the post-surgical period. It's also encouraging to hear that the procedure was textbook perfect. Kudos to anesthesiologist Dr. Panzer and internal medicine specialist Dr Nelson plus their teams. Regardless, there is little good about waking up incapacitated and a bit disoriented in a hospital bed. However, it was great to see the smiling faces of the nursing as well as broader care team on the 6th floor. Their routine empathy, skill, patience, and senses of humor were greatly appreciated. I could not speak more highly about my dream team of Thamar, Jackie, Bari, Frankie, Gabby, and Malika as well as mobility tech Andres. Thanks!!

I can tell you that if it wasn’t for him, I would not be where I am today which is pain free doing regular walking tasks. I am so happy that this is finally happened. Anyone that needs knee replacement, he is your man!!!! He’s the best. I am truly thankful for him. YOU ROCK Dr. Haas!!!!!!!!

So once again it was time to see Dr. Carli. This time it was my right hip that was gone. Five years ago Dr. Carli did a bilateral replacement of both my knees. That worked out so well that he was obviously my first and as it turns out my only choice of surgeon. Operation was done in September, did my rehab religiously for a few months and result was as good as possible. Just came back from Patagonia and was able to hike all the trails. Understand the trails there are not the same as a walk in Central Park. They require the use of walking sticks on very rough trails. Once again I recommend Dr. Carli unreservedly.

Right now I’m feeling very good about HSS as I am reviewing the options for knee replacement surgery. Everything here seems to be designed foe the orthopedic surgery and patient. I like the focus. They also appear to hire people who are generally happy to be here. Obviously the medical treatment is the most important factor, but attention to detail in all areas should lead to a better overall outcome. Wish me luck!

I needed to have my left hip replaced and after a couple of visits with surgeons at other hospitals to compare my options, I was greatly impressed by Dr. Michael Ast. Dr. Ast and his team at the NJ Paramus office, as well as the team at the HSS hospital answered all my questions and concerns very throughly. Deciding to have the surgery done by Dr. Ast at the HSS was the right one. The facilities in NJ and NYC and their entire staff, from receptionists, nurses, personal care assistants and even volunteers are second to none, all very professional and kind. If I need orthopedic surgery in the future, now know where I to go, HSS...

Ultimately, I needed a double lumbar spinal fusion with a bone graft from both a lateral and posterior approach. I chose the phenomenal Dr. Federico P. Girardi. He and his staff made sure everything went off without leaving any stone unturned. My hospital stay was a little longer than expected at 7 days but I didn’t mind at all. HSS’s reputation precedes them and therefore, I couldn’t ask for better all around. I’ve worked In many hospitals during my career and certainly know a bad one when I see it. Anyone who wrote a negative review must not be divulging the entire truth of their experience or their expectations were over the top. Thank you to the entire HSS staff of the 6th floor spinal unit!!! I can’t wait to heal and get back to living!!!

I had scoliosis, kyphosis, and degenerative disk disease. Was told years ago from another practice that surgery would never be an option for me due to the high risk of paralysis. My future changed when meeting Dr. Han Jo Kim. After reviewing my scans he confidently told me he could help. The amount of data HSS collected immediately prior to my surgery was impressive (x-rays, CT scans, MRI's, etc). I felt fully confident in Dr. Kim's expertise and wasn't worried or anxious at all. The caregivers at HSS are all top notch. My hospital stay also gets 5 stars. I'm now 6 weeks post op from a significant spinal fusion and doing really well!

The hospital is incredible, everyone we met with from patient access to radiology to pre-op testing were really just fantastic. It was smooth and everything was easy and fast and it was just a wonderful experience. We are very comfortable and confident that tomorrow's surgery will go well. I would certainly recommend the hospital for special surgery to anyone looking for or in need of orthopedic surgery.

I am writing this review after a recovery room experience. This is unfortunately my third total knee operation. Traditionally, I have found that the worst part of the hospital experience was the recovery room due to the noise ( from staff talking to each other) and the lack of a dark environment. This time the experience was a “12” on a ten point scale due to the amazing Mishi Popolev and also wonderful help from Shira Great people , great hospital

We brought our baby here for evaluation of hip dysplasia and we couldn’t be happier with the care that we received. Everyone, from the front desk to the physician, was so friendly and the ultrasound technician made us feel very comfortable as we were quite nervous. Luckily our daughter didn’t need surgery however we would highly recommend the radiology department at HSS.

I worked at this facility for approximately 4 months, and while I would like to say my experience was great.. it was NOT. Jason who is the manager on the 9th floor was very rude, unprofessional, aggressive, and disrespectful. If you made any mistakes he would become verbally abusive, have a terrible attitude, and he would often scream at you in front of other people.. so embarrassment was also a form of punishment for him. Dianne who is an RN and occasionally was left in charge was also RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL. Dianne would be very passive aggressive and constantly throwing little insults to her comments. I have never written a complaint on google about working at a facility, but the disrespect within Management on the 9th floor is unacceptable. I tried mentioning it to Shioban (who was my boss at the time) about the bullying, but she chose to ignore the matter. In fact she didn’t even apologize nor reassure me that she would do anything about it. The 9th floor needs a serious wake up call on how to treat other people, maybe the managers on the 4th floor can teach them basic mannerism and respect. The 4th floor was a completely different work environment with great energy. Anyhow, overall some of the Nursing staff on the 9th floor need a serious reality check. You won’t get very far with an attitude like that especially if the only speciality they know is Orthopedics. Definitely can’t become a traveler by knowing just one speciality and not having any scrub experience.. nor a CRNA with no bedside manners. They need to remember that next time they chose to degrade a new person for not knowing the way things run on the first day.

Finally, his surgeon called me and told me to see my son in the recovery room within 60 minutes before going to the regular room.
