Roosevelt
Island
is
a
narrow
island
in
the
East
River
of
New
York,
between
Manhattan
in
the
west
and
Long
Island
in
the
east.
It
is
3.2
kilometers
long
and
has
a
maximum
width
of
240
meters,
a
total
area
of
0.59
sq.
km
and
a
population
of
11,661.It
was
known
as
Welfare
Island
until
1973,
when
it
was
renamed
Roosevelt
Island,
in
honor
of
US
President
Franklin
Roosevelt.
The
Queensboro
Bridge,
completed
in
1909,
connects
the
Upper
East
Side
of
Manhattan
with
Queens
on
Long
Island
and
is
crossed
by
pedestrians
and
vehicles
over
the
island.
In
July
1975
the
cable
car
pylons
were
built
and
exactly
one
year
later,
in
July
1976,
the
“Roosevelt
Island
Tramway”
was
put
into
operation.
It
includes
two
cabins,
with
a
capacity
of
up
to
125
people
each,
moving
in
both
directions
at
a
speed
of
about
26
km/h.
The
cable
car
covers
a
distance
of
940
meters
in
3
minutes,
making
approximately
115
trips
per
day.
Its
maximum
height
reaches
76
meters
above
the
East
River
and
follows
the
north
side
of
the
Queensboro
Bridge,
offering
a
panoramic
view
of
the
east
side
of
central
(Midtown)
Manhattan.
Although
designed
as
a
temporary
solution,
the
cable
car
soon
became
very
popular
and
remained
the
exclusive
means
of
connecting
Roosevelt
Island
to
Manhattan
until
1989,
when
the
63rd
Street
subway
was
completed.
