If you want a beach that represents the real LGBTQ+ community of NYC, this is the beach to go to. The beach is diverse and inclusive. There are artistic people and there is always something interesting to see.

Love the beach and atmosphere, such a lay back beach which is inclusive with families and so forth. You have life guards from 10 AM to 6 PM and public bathroom.

It's a serene place. Quiet and peaceful. Great view of the peninsula. On one side you have Jamaica Bay and on the other side the Atlantic Ocean. From this point you can see: Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Far Rockaway.

A clean beautiful, guarded, LGBTQ beach. Too much music polluting the ocean serenity but usually not as bad as other beaches. Don't bring your kids to this part of the beach.

We came from the Bronx, to Riis Beach. It was worth every minute if the drive! Definitely the cleanest beach in NYC so far! Water was beautiful. Sand was so clean. The people were a great vibe! We were at Bay 6. I don't think I'll go to any other beach again!

The most non-elitist, happy and free place in New York. The world should be so Queer.

This beach is very well organized and doesn't get as crowded as you'd think. on fourth of July we got there around 10:30 and there were plenty of spots to setup. There is tons of parking space and there are even some food trucks open when you enter😀. Incase anyone was wondering people are very good about wearing masks on the boardwalk and everywhere else other then the water and there family's. One last thing is that people are also good at staying 6 feet away when they setup so no need to worry 👍😁just wear a mask

Family friendly, true ocean beach with a huge amount of parking and now expanded amenities. Accessible by car, train/bus, and ferry this is a top contender for public beaches in NYC. Riis Bazaar at the west end and now expanded food, drinking, entertainment and shopping options in the main bath house. Come early to avoid the parking lot entry lines that can stretch back to the Belt and look into a season pass if you plan to visit often.

This is a great beach! It can feel like you're a great distance from the city, until you see the Empire state building along the skyline as you're walking back to the parking lot. The beach at the west side of the parking lot has a lot of space to spread out, good options for concessions, outdoor showers and bathrooms. Just check for that roll before you commit!

it's a wonderful beach, the water is freezing...great for families and kids, the bathroom's could be a lot cleaner and they close around 6:30- 7 and they have 1 fifty potter potty for everyone... so make sure to bring tissue and wipes just incase

In desperate need of shade If your idea of a good day at the beach is burning so much that you start to resemble a lobster, then this is the place for you! This beach has virtually NO shade, which is a terrible shame, especially considering the facilities that have been put in by officials. Like most American beaches, we seem to have remembered to install paths, benches and toilets - but totally forgotten the fact that, as it is sunny, it may actually be blisteringly hot. As a result of this official oversight, benches and paths roast in the sunshine going totally unused. I would recommend that the local authority quickly reviews its facilities at this beach, unless of course they would prefer to spot more people wandering around who have become so burnt that their skin now resembles a coarse sand paper

Riis Beach is a true hidden gem in New York City for the sense of liberation and acceptance one feels here. It is beautiful to see all types of people living their best lives so happy and free. I was in the LGBTQIA+ section at the end of the beach and I would comeback here for the community, view, ambiance, and strong waves. Many women are topless and men are scantily dressed. The music is happy pop and I bopped from Britney Spears to Whitney Houston. The water is a bit murky, but the strong waves make it very entertaining. I recommend swimming in front of the lifeguard if you are not a strong swimmer and not going in too deep for obvious safety reasons. There is a food cart and it seemed reasonably priced at $6. I wish I had something to eat before partaking in all the festivities!

My go to beach to work on my sun tan in the summer 😎. Clean sand and water. No food vendors anymore though that I have seen, so bring your food/snacks/drinks.

Beautiful beach with unruly wind and strong waves. Nice sand. Though at times lots of shells when entering the water. Good for wake boarding

Welcoming to everyone and most anything. A very LGBTQ+ on the north end of the board walk. Accessible by city bus or $5 toll and $20 parking. Best to bike there and spend the day on beach or boardwalk. A few spots to eat and usually a lot of independent commerce on the sand selling a variety of things. I prefer Sandy Hook but this beach is a perfectly NYC do anything and no one notices.

Many fond memories of Riis beach. One of my favorites was a moonlight beach party we had for queer interdependence day. A magical night of sparklers, fairy dust, lavender spliffs and a whole lotta love 🌈💖🌕💫

I've been to Riis Beach 3 times within the past year with my daughter and family. I remember coming here as a young girl. It's $20 to get in, but I don't mind. The sand is clean, the people are nice and I feel safe.

RIIS Beach is pretty much a landmark. Recently however (I have to let you know these things), there is a lifeguard sign that says "underwater danger, no swimming", or something to that effect. You can wade in the waves, but you will get whistled at if you try out for the Olympics. Bring your friends, beach supplies and tents, and enjoy the sun. Get your feet wet. STAY SAFE.

Definitely has cleaned up and changed. It's a great getaway from skyscrapers. I don't do nyc water, but it's a great spot to cool off and wet your feet.

Wonderful laid back scene. The area next to the jetty is very shallow all the way to the end of the jetty so great for older or young people.

Best time to visit is after Summer ..if you're like me and don't like huge crowds. Sunsets are spectacular here, you can't take a bad picture if you tried. There are still shops , delis. restaurants open in the off season. Highly highly recommended

Our beach, 10minutes from our house. They work at making it Covid safe. The beer garden and beach bazaar practice safe dining. The police and park staff should stop non service dogs , with the exception of true service dogs , should not be on a crowded beach.

Great spot. No one cracking down on wearing masks in the summer heat. Was pretty crowded but it was still a great spot. Only reason not 5 stars, too much seaweed in the water, can't really help that but it was a bit annoying.

Great beach, clothing optional. Came with all the family, people are friendly, respectful and we felt safe. Felt like old NYC, full of color and love. If you don't feel comfortable around a little nudity or queer folks don't come. It's a great vibe and it should stay that way.

Beautiful day at the beach. Got there at 9am and stayed until 5pm and it was fine. Concessions are open. Most everyone was wearing masks on the boardwalk and social distancing was respected. Bathrooms were pretty gross, there were not place for garbage baskets in the stalls so tampon applicators all over the place (less 2 stars).

This was the right decision, Riis Beach! It was a beautiful sunny day, but not scorchingly hot. Everyone seemed happy and no one was boisterous or played loud music. Absolutely no disturbances with the exception of a couple of flyaway beach umbrellas. The water was not cold and it was clean compared to Orchard Beach, which is closer to me, yet not as clean as Jones Beach. There was a wait to get into the women's restroom (not unusual), but it went quickly and everyone wore masks and social distanced. A lovely beach day. Yay! Thank You Lord!

1st time back since the 80s. Still a nice beach to enjoy yourself. Well relaxing, lots of parking, boardwalk and rest rooms were decent. I will try and visit again and experience the other sections before the weather gets tooooo cold.

I really enjoy this beach, it's pretty clean and convenient to get to by bus. The bathroom is usually clean, unfortunately the port-a-potty available when the bathrooms are closed is something else; hold your breath and try not to look down. I've only stayed on the eastern side of the beach, there is no food this year, allegedly there are options on the west side, but sandy picnics are fun ?

Great beach local to NYC. I wish there was a bit more to do in walking distance, but a great spot to get away. There's a tons beach sand space and a decent amount of parking. Pretty historical place too. Have fun!

Fun place to visit everyone follow the social distance rules you can go fishing across the street play basketball are just relax people are friendly that's the best part of visiting.

  • 5/5 Alex S. 3 years ago on Google
It is located in residential area with restricted parking only for residents, so crowd mostly composed of locals and their relatives and friends. Thus for the beach is clean and not crowded and has this "almost Hampton " feeling. Another thing - I was so pleasantly surprised by abundance of flying American flags and support NYPD flags, very patriotic! So if you have problems with star spangled banner you better to stay away from this place.

Beach is fairly clean and maintained. Lots of amenities. Gets crowded by 10am on summer weekends. Come early or be prepared to wait... Parking is available for $10. There is an NYC bus that stops right out front.

Great beach. This is a wonderful beach. The water was clean, but the waves were frightening. The parking cost is solely $10 for cars and that's affordable. It can get very packed so, get there early.Cheers All!
