Good place for free time. Restaurant is on the top of the building. You can do shopping as well. Fishing is another advantage of the place.

Mid-sized ship that was built in early 1900s and functioned as a floating lighthouse for 20+ years. It was strategically positioned at the mouth of New York Harbor to guide bigger vessels in and out of the harbor. I learned a lot from the docent, who was very knowledgeable and friendly. You can buy admission tickets online or at the South Street Seaport Museum across the street. Tickets are also good for the museum and another ship called Wavertree, which is docked on the same pier as the Ambrose.

Beautifully restored USCG Lightship! Currently not allowing tours, but great photos can be had from the surrounding piers.

This is a very fascinating ship. It would sail out to the edge of New York harbor shipping channel and just park there for weeks at a time. On the top masts are two lights and they would act as a lighthouse. This could be dangerous since they could be hit by ships during bad weather.

The beautiful lightship, restored and an example of the many that over the years moored at the entrance to the port of New York, guided transatlantic liners towards the entrance to the Hudson River estuary.

Guided tour (held at specific times so enquire first) included with 'General admission' ticket to see the 'Wavertree' tall ship & the maritime museum across the street. The guide was enthusiastic & knowledgeable, the tour was fascinating and highly recommended.

A beautiful ship. Nearby pier has great views of both Manhattan right behind and Brooklyn across the river. Quite clean and new looking.

I haven't been inside the ship, but Pier 17 is a really nice spot to sit and watch the ferries come in, look out at the water, have a snack or a meal, and just relax for a bit. I hope to visit the Ambrose properly soon.

The free ship tour was a delight. I learned so many small details about the seaport area and the ship use from the early New York. Recommend if you are in the area.
