Honestly, save your money and go somewhere else. At first glance online, this place looks quirky and cutely decorated. When you arrive, the lobby is beautiful and antiqued. But once you get upstairs, that beauty and flair are gone. It looks like a service hallway. The rooms feel like a cheap Reno done on old bones, and frankly left something wanting. And it is LOUD. I mean there was a nonstop massive bang all night that we couldn’t figure out… was it a flaw in the elevator? I’m not sure but it sounded like something was repeatedly falling. An alarm bell like a middle school fire drill went off bright and early at 7 AM. And generally the experience just wasn’t great. Something I can’t quite put my finger on, but the vibes were off and I felt like I was in an episode of American Horror Story. So if you’re sensitive to the feeling you get when you’re in a space, skip! Not to mention the hotel bar (Broken Shaker) feels like you’re about to get kidnapped on the way there. Literally a darkened abandoned hallway that leads up to a creepy elevator. Not cool.

My husband and I just left the hotel this morning. To say this was the worst hotel I’ve stayed at is an understatement. We booked this because it was cheaper. I’m not one to care to stay in a nice expensive hotel, but hotels should at least provide a livable space for a couple of days. I will never ever recommend this place to anyone; in fact, I will be recommending against it. The place is very small - the room itself and the elevators are TINY. This wouldn’t have been a problem necessarily in itself, but everything else this hotel lacked compounded. The room was FREEZING, the shower had 0 pressure, the bathroom smells like mold, the lights are super dim, the mini fridge fits barely a couple of water bottles, and there wasn’t even a basic coffee pot. Sure, the above listed are nuisances, but the absolute worst part was BED BUGS. The first night we spent, I woke up with a few bites but decided to brush it off. The next night, I woke up with more bites and my husband was all itchy. This kept happening each night we spent there. This, to me, is unacceptable and embarrassing to the hotel. We had a great time in NYC, but could not wait to leave this hotel.

What a terrible ending to what could have been a good night. I arrived yesterday evening to say hello to friends who had asked me to come check out the space of the lounge. I host events and am always looking for new spaces. Unfortunately I could never do business with an establishment that hires the most unprofessional security team. A team led by extremely aggressive men/bullies. As I was waiting off to the side of the entrance for my driver to pull around the corner in the hotel lobby, I was asked to step outside. I explained to the man that my car was pulling up in less than a minute and that I felt safer being inside the hotel as I had extremely expensive property on my person and not to mention it was 20 degrees outside. A second man approached me after listening to me explain to the First Gentleman why I felt uncomfortable to stand outside and his behavior that followed was not only shocking but disappointing. This Second employee walked over to mock my concerns & open the door forcibly telling me to get out & that it wasn’t his job to worry about my safety. As the world is already chaotic and losing more real men by the day, the ones who represented this hotel last night should be removed and replaced by real men who put the safety of women first especially within such a dangerous city. As I exited, the same employee verbally assaulted two more women after me who expressed the same safety concerns. What a terrible first experience and what a shame as I had high hopes to do potential business and help bring more revenue to this establishment that I will happily never return to.

Excellent bed, room and , service. Everything is always clean and tidy. The only negative part of this hotel is the sink. I am not lying when I say the sink is tiny. I literally can’t wash my face without casing a tsunami. I can barely spit in the sink. This is a problem with every room I’ve been to and I’ve stayed here like 4-5 times. Also the bathroom although nice and clean cannot fit a trash can in because of how tiny it is. Other than that excellent hotel.

Front desk was super helpful, the building was beautiful, historical and centrally located to all kinds of cool stuff in NYC and the room was snug but still great for my family of 4. The kids loved the bunk bed set up and had a blast on them. Would stay again.

Freehand was the 3rd consecutive hotel I stayed in while waiting for my apartment to get fixed nearby. Finally a hotel worthy of the stars it claims to be. The staff were super friendly and went above and beyond to help us settle in. An example of that was Kat who was incredibly helpful from the beginning. Also, Brandon, always making sure we were comfortable and content with our stay. He always asked us if we needed anything and I really appreciated that. I liked our room for the most part (a little dark, even with all the lights turned on; and the sheets/bed were noisy.) Housekeeping were thorough, unlike the other hotels. All in all, I enjoyed my stay. Would definitely recommend.

This hotel is one of the best that we ever had in NYC. We always booked hotels in New York through booking. Com and couldn't really tell much from the pictures and descriptions. This one is a gem to keep in mind. As soon as we got off taxi, someone is ready outside of the hotel to greet and help to get luggage into the hotel. Full of smile and warm greetings. Front desk was quick and friendly. The room, though it is not big but has been laid out so nicely that it gives space more than enough for luggage and to move around. The bed configuration is awesome for a family. Everything is clean and in good condition. Position is amazing. Can just walk everywhere.

Aesthetically, this is a lovely hotel but I would never stay here again. The staff were all quite nice but it didn't make up for other things! It was very noisy (there was what sounded like a jackhammer that started at 7am in the room above mine and again during the day while I was working), my mini fridge was mouldy, there were no glasses for water, and there was very little lighting (my main room light was broken and flickering and there's no light by the desk). Again, aesthetically beautiful but not really a relaxing hotel experience unfortunately.

I am currently staying at the Freehand in NY. While the gentleman attending the door was friendly and welcoming upon my arrival, every other experience at this hotel has been extremely disappointing and disruptive. The two front-desk attendants seemed as if I were inconveniencing them. They were not outright rude but were not friendly and barely mumbled a greeting. Beyond staff interaction, the hallways are lined with black carpet--which does make the hallways dark and a bit tacky, especially as some of the carpeting is peeling back and torn. All morning, day and night, doors are constantly slamming shut and what I assume are heavy items, are being slammed onto floors, shaking walls and furniture; the level of noise this brings is well beyond what you may hear in an average hotel. It is completely disruptive and very loud--so much so I was able to clearly record the noise on my phone. The walls are extremely thin, meaning conversations can be heard from hallways and in-room; unfortunately, I was awakened by grunting and bumping noises from the occupants in the next room. This was so disruptive, not to mention disturbing/gross, that my low rating of this hotel was sealed. I probably got about one hour or two of sleep, in between the constant disruptions and very loud noises being generated all throughout this hotel. I would not recommend for business or personal travel. I really hate that I booked at this hotel but now know I will not return and would advise others who are even moderately sensitive to noise, not to select this hotel. The hotel room, as other reviewers have mentioned, is relatively small with very poor lighting. The bathroom is very small (even by NY standards), including the extremely petite sink, making it very challenging to maneuver, let alone wash your hands and face. Though the hotel may not be able to control or address every challenge with this property, mitigating the noise level and what you can hear even from room to room should be immediately addressed. Regardless of what the hotel may or may not do to improve the stay of hotel guests, I know I will not again be a guest here.

Reviews --> sort by new --> read them. Please please don't spend your money here. The hotel looks like it's out of The Shining, and not in a good way. It's incredibly tiny, rooms are moist, and heating doesn't work. My favourite part is the clubbing music you can get free access to from your room until 3am. The staff are also miserable cants. We ended up moving to a new hotel called The Refinery after one night. Worth every extra penny. If you'd like to waste your money please Cash App me instead and you can stay in my garage. 😂

The hotel is really well located but I would not recommend! First, we stayed on the 3rd floor. The room was great, spacious and with a wonderful view. But the staff forgot to mention there was a club just below us. Result: really loud music at a time when we wanted to sleep. And given that part of staying in a hotel involves sleeping, the fact that the soundproofing was poor made the room not great. When we asked to change rooms there were no apologies for the situation. We were then moved to a room half the size of the first one that now faced the back of the building. The cherry on top of the cake? A really loud and constant aircon noise. We were so shocked we even called reception to ensure it was not a mistake, as the room did feel the same level as the first one. We were told that was the only room available. Customer service is definitely not 4 star and, as much as the hotel is quite cool, clean and suuuper well located, I would not stay here ever again.

So full disclosure, I haven’t stayed there yet…the pandemic changed our plans. However, I felt inclined to write a review regarding their customer service. I called to change my reservations and I received the type of customer service that goes above and beyond! Hanna listened and responded with a level of professionalism that I have not experienced with any other hotel. I am so looking forward to staying there soon and will write another review after I have. If their level of service before I’ve even stayed is this good, I can’t wait to go!

When I got to my room the sheets were stained. The window sill next to the bed full of dust and the lobby smelt musty. Burn some candles or something. It has a old Vegas casino feel. It is a shame because the room itself isn’t terrible, but the way they don’t sanitize them is a bit off putting. Even a diamond needs to be polished. Otherwise it is just another pebble.

We had a wonderful stay at Freehand! We stayed for 4 nights and got a room facing the street, with a glimpse of the Empire State Building. Of course, it got a bit loud at times with traffic outside, but hey, that's what gives New York all its charm and we actually didn't mind and were able to sleep with no trouble. The room was very clean and we appreciated the daily housekeeping and fresh towels everyday. Bed was very comfortable and we spent restful nights. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, even after our stay when we asked for a payment advice regarding the occupancy tax that was charged at the end of our trip. Checking in and out was very simple and we were even able to leave our luggage for free for our last day in the city, allowing us to visit some more before heading to the airport. The location is just perfect and you can get to pretty much anywhere thanks to the subway stations which are only a few minutes away. We will gladly come back and recommend Freehand!

The hotel room is def not worth more then what I paid for it. I was lucky enough to get it for $135 because I booked early and it was off season. The room is very much tight but had all the amenities needed. Wasn't the cleanest. Stains on the black carpet that were white, Side table had splatter, mold in the small shower. One half roll of toilet paper that was out by morning and no extra rolls in the room. I'm a New Yorker born and raised so I'm use to sleep in the most noisy conditions HOWEVER the noise everyone else is talking about is 100% accurate. My room window faced 4 other building walls and the ac units are obnoxiously loud. I kept waking up from my sleep. It sound like a tornado was heading our way. The thermostat has a little green light to indicate it's on but in pitch black it acted like a nightlight and annoyed me enough to turn off the unit and freeze the rest of the night. The night staff weren't friendly at check in but the am was better. I stood here instead of driving to CT because I had appts that ran late and I was afraid I would fall sleep on the road. I would have rather crashed on my way home then stay here again.

Location is a big positive, so is the overall aesthetic and room-decor of the entire hotel. No complaints there. The room I reserved was a deluxe queen room, I don't know what was exactly "deluxe" about it other than the fact it was slightly more expensive than the regular queen room. There was no bathrobes, no clock, no functioning phone, paper thin walls, and a ton of fruit flies in the bathroom! A lot of noise in the room as well from the city (to be expected), but also from the rooms around me (all sides, above and below).

JUST OK. The Freehand hotel is nice to look at, but not so great to stay at. Here is why: 1) The hallways and suit I stayed in were dim, dark, and dingy. There was barely any light, making it hard to see myself in the mirror and get ready. 2) The sink in the bathroom is so small that when I tried to wash my face the water splashed all over the floor. 3) The space in the suite is not utilized well. I know NYC hotel rooms are small, but there was little storage space to put anything, and no shelves or hooks in the shower to put any of my personal products. 4) My hallway and the lobby area often smelt like fried chicken. I will say that the staff was kind and helpful and housekeeping was quick to honor my requests. The Georgia Room is the bar/lounge/club area in the hotel which was fun to go to with some friends on a Saturday night. I probably won't return to the Freehand again, but it was a clean and a OK place to sleep for a night or two, and that's all that really matters.

We were very interested over this place, personal was super nice and we liked it a lot, they helped us a lot. About the place itself Our room, was super small, the towels smell weird, asked them to change them but still smelled weird, like iron or something like that, there was no shower gel, and of course I noticed it till I was in the shower... so my shower was just with water, the shower curtain was too small and it made a puddle near the sink that I had to clean, the noise was very annoying, in general from the outside, I've like stayed at hotels in very crowded areas and it wasn't a problem, but here you could hear people talking at 3:30am getting into their room that would wake you up, or the tv at 7am. In general the curtains weren't very good blocking light. And the fact that the windows were facing the bed didn't help at all.

Unique (albeit small) rooms. Freehand paintings on the walls in each room are different so you never know what fun you’ll walk into. The location is fantastic! It was clean and comfy and the staff are great!! Love the attached restaurants and bars! The lounge/ Georgia room is wonderful for hanging and catching up, studying, working, and/or relaxing on a regular day, and it opens up to another room to make an awesome party room for events/live music and dancing. I really want to be there on a Th-Sat next time so I can experience the party! Smile To Go is also attached and I LOVED the food and staff! Freehand is a great choice for an affordable visit to the city. So conveniently located for coming to NYU.

Fantastic location, clean rooms and amazing service! Everybody is super-attentive and they make you feel like at home. The only reason I don't give the 5 starts to the 'Rooms' section is because there was a foul odour coming out from the pipes in the bathroom that was hard to stand. But I understood that had more to do with the NYC sewage system than with the hotel itself. Other than that, the room was spotless and everything was perfectly clean and tidy daily at our arrival from visiting the city. I would happily book again my accommodation at the Freehand Hotel!

This place was absolutely perfect for my boyfriend and I’s first trip as a couple to the city! The hotel has a boutique feel and the ambience is amazing. There are four bars built into the property that we loved and the price is amazing for the location. We also had a last minute emergency and needed to stay an additional night prior to our check in time, and Rudy, one of the front desk associates/managers, was more than accommodating and was able to get us our room one night early at the same rate I had originally purchased it for. The only thing I will say is that the rooms are definitely small, but this was not an issue for us as we really only needed the room to sleep. We’d definitely stay here again :)

Great location and atmosphere! I stayed here for three nights, traveling solo, and first time in NYC. It was in a great spot for getting around town. The entire staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I felt safe and comfortable. I stayed in solo room, and it was plenty of space for just me. I had a fantastic time, and I plan to stay here again the next time I'm in NYC.

Great location and the rooms have an artsy vibe. It is convenient for different kinds of trips as you can get anything from a single bed to a king to bunk beds for a group. Plus they have great staff who are always helpful, Hanna made sure my stay was perfect there.

We had an excellent stay. I was a little nervous because I booked based on a friend's recommendation before reading the reviews and there were a lot of negative ones. The room was clean, with a compact desk, efficient bathroom, bathrobes, a place to hang your clothes, and a window that opens a few inches for fresh air. Our stay was during the week and facing away from the street and was very quiet. The room was a little small, I've stayed in smaller, but that's to be expected in NYC. The lobby area is beautiful, I wish a little more of that style spilled into the rooms. The bar on the rooftop was great, but you can only access it from the street entrance.

Really nice stay. The staff was excellent and very responsive at all hours if you press 0 when calling you immediately are connected with the front desk to answer any and all questions you may have. The rooms were indeed smaller but me and my 6 foot boyfriend fit comfortably in the regular queen sized room. Robes, tons of towels and accommodations. Water bottles at front desk if you ask. Two restaurants connected to either side of lobby and a beautiful rooftop bar with outdoor seating and room for standing to drink and people watch. The shower heads are next level sooo nice. Love the ceramic accents in all the fixtures in the room. The woodwork in the lobby is so beautiful and the building itself was built in 1928!

This hotel is super cool and was the perfect choice for rooming 4 collage-age young adults on our trip! They offer awesome room options like a single twin bed room to twin-over-queen bunks for sleeping 3, to rooms for 4 singles with 2 sets of twin bunk beds. It's next door to Baruch College, and conveniently located in general. The historical building is cool and interesting and is decorated with fun sketch art.

Great style, recently renovated, great location. The mezzanine is a great place to work for a bit and the staff were great. Rooms are small as expected, but bed is comfortable and I slept pretty well. The rooftop actually has a solid view, though the drinks are overpriced and not amazing (separate business so not counting that against the hotel). Having a rooftop bar and another bar on the first floor you could hear the bass until late but its not too bad and rooms are decently soundproof except the door.

Good location close to shopping and restaurants. The rooms are nicely done up. Try for a corner king if possible-good amount of space. The bathrooms are small but nice. The one less star was for the parking garage changing the price for parking that was quoted on Hotel Tonight, confirmed with the front desk, as well as the sticker they give to validate the parking. That part was shady...

Loved this hotel! Fun and funky, in a great area. Rooms are clean and generously sized. Several bars inside the hotel, and the restaurant is really good too. The staff was so nice and helpful. Would definitely return! Thanks for a great stay.

Liked the design, good location, easy to find and nice desk people. We were given with one bathrobe and one pair of slippers, no glasses and no water. So it was resolved in 5 min. All water is given on from desk ;) but we didn’t know that, so better to inform. Even the cleaning was made, and we stayed only 3 days. Also there is a rooftop bar that i liked more than the hotel inside bar. The atmosphere is more cosy and comfortable. Craft cocktails.

My husband and I stayed here for a staycation and we had a wonderful time. I love studying and reading at the 'studio' workspace and Smile To Go has pretty good snacks/food on the go. Javier, Brandon, and Hero (spelling?) were so accommodating and attentive. Plenty of restaurants and walking distance from Madison Sq Park! We had lovely meals in the neighborhood. We'll definitely be back.

If I could I would give it 4.5 stars. A great hotel in a convenient spot, rooms are great, you have to realize this is an nyc hotel not a hotel in Orlando to all the people complaining about the size of rooms. Has excellent dining and entertainment options in the hotel. Great for young couples looking for a quick weekend getaway. Staff is excellent, property is showing a minor wear but overgall great. The only other complaint is that the jackhammer was running nonstop for two days we were here, but thats NYC not on the hotel. It would have been nice for the hotel maybe to give us a warning...if they were even given a warning.

i had such a nice stay here. was in a premium queen and it was super cute & moody. the room was super clean & it was very comfortable. i would 100% stay here again, my room was on the 6th floor / super quiet / and faced the back of the hotel which is better because you don’t hear any noise.

Beautiful hotel in Manhattan. The staff was really nice, the rooms had enough space for two people, comfortable bed and nice view. The rooms have private bathrooms which is also great, they even include the shampoo, soap and conditioner, I really appreciated that. During the weekend could be a bit noisy but nothing too bad. I totally recommend this place to stay in NYC.

We paid for the upgraded corner suite and felt like it helped to free up some space to enjoy the room for our 4 day stay. The view of the surrounding city was great. The bed was nice and the hotel is overall really cool. The front desk service was friendly and helpful.

I was worried about the noise over a weekend based on other reviews, but we didn’t hear the bar in our 6th floor room at all. The bed was comfy, the room had good amenities and solid AC. Great value for Manhattan, and super easy to walk to lots of great restaurants. The receptionists (~1pm on Sept. 30) were friendly, kind, and patient. The room we got was small, and the lighting in the bathroom is definitely dim for doing makeup, but those weren’t issues for us.

This hotel has a great location in the Flat Iron district. It’s an old building…1920’s I believe so it’s kinda of dark inside and the ceilings are low. Front desk staff was friendly and free waters in the lobby are nice. Room was clean and loved that it had a ( very tiny!!!) fridge so we could keep our waters cold. It’s a tiny room and even tinier bathroom. It was fine for my husband and myself but would not recommend for families.

If you're expecting a chain hotel experience then I would not stay here. This is a very location specific type hotel with pretty good accommodation. The rooms are small and the walls / windows are not soundproof. You're going to hear a bit of the city and your neighbor if they're going in and out. That said, if you are the type that wants a place to stay that isn't gross and aren't spending a lot of time in your hotel then this is a great option. I'll also say, Freehand... your guests are expecting better than the toilet paper you provided. It's not quite one ply but might as well be. I also think it's in poor taste to not let your guests know that they're paying $30 for water bottles and wifi (THIS SHOULD BE STATED AT CHECK IN). The wifi requires a sign in on an insecure site which is going to detour many people from continuing. The tv was pretty spotty, channels were not lined up with the guide and the last two days it didn't work at all. This might not be a big deal for some people but I figured I'd note this. We also had a water leak in our ceiling bathroom but it was fixed quickly and they refunded me the bottled water fee for the day so I have that going for me! Overall, I don't regret my stay at Freehand. The location makes up for any of the shortcomings (paired with the price).

Make sure to use ʜᴏᴛᴇʟʙᴜʟʟʏ .ᴄᴏᴍ when booking your room. This website will compare hundreds of hotel sites and usually will have rates a lot cheaper compared to others! Thank me later! This hotel is one of the best in the area. I've been staying here for a very long time. If you stay for a few nights you for sure won't regret it. Really enjoyed my stay here. It was a great room, and the bed was quite large, but really what makes it five stars was the water pressure in the shower was absolutely amazing. Great location. Only downside was the elevators could be slow at peak times

I really enjoy staying at the Freehand when I’m in NYC because of the location and I love Smile to Go downstairs. The thing that really annoys me is when hotel staff are not trained in a professional manner. I don’t care if the room is $169 a night or $1000, reception staff should be friendly and helpful. Some of the reception staff here really act like you’re bothering them with questions or requests. A little proper hospitality training would go a long way here!

I absolutely loved this hotel. It’s very well priced, a great location, and beautifully decorated. The rooms aren’t hugely spacious but they do well with the space that is available (and you are in New York after all). Definitely take advantage of the upstairs lounges. There’s a great sitting area with books and games for during the day, and a phenomenal rooftop bar for the evening (they make a mean whiskey sour). I also recommend the hotel restaurant, Comodo (get the duck) for a good meal you don’t have to go far for. Last but not least, the interiors here are incredible. Every space is a vibe and decorated with artful mid-century vision. I will be back!

We are a family of 4 and found the double bunk room was great, well priced alternative to having to book 2 rooms in new york. The bedroom itself is a fair size with plenty room under the bunks and in the closet for suitcases, but there is very little drawer or cupboard space. The bottom bunks are comfortable but we found the low ceiling beams in the room we stayed in made it very difficult to get into the top bunks, and lead to many a knocked head. The bathroom was small but clean, we had an issue with the cold tap putting out warm water which we reported in and the hotel reduced our facility fee accordingly, there was also a free supply of bottled water at reception for those who needed it. The decor of the hotel is fantastic, it has an almost creepy air to the lifts and corridor (in good way) which make it feel really authentic, the art work is great and the hotel was clean throughout. The staff were all friendly and helpful. In short I would definitely recommend this place for a stay in NYC, its walking distance to all the main tourist places and there's a good few restaurants nearby and the hotel is a lovely stay

Our shower never got hot, water pressure wasn't great. Front desk said they would fix it, it never got fixed. There is no cold water in the room - the tap water wouldn't get cold which I'm assuming is why they hand out bottled water at the front desk. Our room did stay quiet and dark at night on the 4th floor. It was also nice to have a rooftop bar and adjoining restaurant. We were about a 30 min walk to everything we wanted to do around the city.

Small room but well designed and furnished. There's daily housekeeping and the shower pressure is stellar. However the TV in the room didn't work half of the time. There's a resort fee of $45, which no one at front desk mentioned at check-in, and they didn't provide a receipt at checkout either, so it was a surprise when it showed up on the credit card bill.

Loved this place, from the service at the Front Desk, to the cleaning staff and ..well everyone! The decor is so well done too. Well worth the price and then some. A couple plastic cups in the closet as a supply would be nice .

Very nice hotel. Small rooms but doable. Their Latin American restaurant is amazing. The bar all the way at the top didn't smell all that great and it was for a very young demographic but the hotel itself was great. They brought us water when we called them. Front desk picks up the phone fast. Our room was not ready and they took our bags which was great! Early check in may be possible! Don't be afraid to ask!

Really quaint boutique hotel. They are one of the few ones that offer rooms intended for three and five/six people. We stayed at the garden suite that came with a living room. Spacious for the price. Staff was really nice. However, the shower in the room for four is very peculiar that it doesn’t have a stopper from the “walk-in” shower. Water just gets everywhere in the bathroom. The building itself is also older, though decorated nicely. One of our group got a paper cut but they didn’t have a first aid kit at reception. That seems quite unreasonable for a four star hotel.

Freehand's location makes it a worthy option if your looking for a place that's at the heart of manhattan and budget friendly. Other than that, it's truly odd that this place would be considered a 4-star hotel. Very little amenities, black dirty carpets inside rooms and they weren't cleaning my room for the last 3 days at all. There was a lot of noise making it impossible to sleep past 7am. Walls are super thin. The linen and beds were on the other hand quite clean, spotless, and towels were plenty. The staff members working the reception are awesome and friendly. There is a bar inside the hotel which was really good. The two available restaurants - smile to go and comodo - the first one is great breakfast option, the second best to avoid, there are way better options around the block that are less expensive. Overall, a somewhat acceptable price-service quality ratio. Would not book again.

Cute hotel, feels safe and clean. The hotel is in a good area to get around and see the city. Room was small and bathroom feels like it’s next to the bed. Could do with a fan in the bathroom just for a bit of privacy.

Excellent check in, large modern rooms, AC was awesome, city view was great, bars on site were fun! Update: Stayed here a 2nd time in July. Front desk staff and manager were AMAZING and super helpful with an AC issue. This hotel is by far the best deal for mid to lower Manhattan. Perfect distance from everything and very safe.

I would 110% stay here again. Fantastic location, very helpful and responsive staff (Hero was a great help to us, as were many other front desk staff), good security, and clean, well-stocked rooms. The only thing we noted that could be better was that the doors are thin, so it could be slightly noisy at times. This was only an issue for the lighter sleepers and was easily solved with ear plugs. Overall, I highly recommend staying here.

Cute, trendy hotel in the center of everything and with great views (if you don’t get stuck in one of the rooms in the back). Most of the front desk staff were friendly with a few exceptions. The hotel has a cafe/restaurant with pretty good food and drinks and areas to sit both inside and outside. Additionally, there is a separate space called the mezzanine where you can work, read, etc and it’s super cute. The hotel also has a rooftop bar which was amazing. The rooms were a bit smaller than expected, especially for the cost but I guess that’s New York to you!

Such a beautiful hotel! From the photos I couldn't tell if it would be overly trendy in a tries-too-hard way. It's absolutely not. Tasteful, artful, comfortable from the common areas to the outstanding rooms, which seem larger than they are... great music playing everywhere, super-friendly bellboys, and a phenomenal location that's convenient for both uptown and downtown. I love this place!

Loved the aesthetic, fun vibe, and great location of this hotel. Smile to Go has excellent coffee and breakfast on premise. The staff was helpful and attentive. We loved the bar and dining at Comodo- terrific atmosphere, delicious food, great drinks. The rooftop bar was a great place to watch the sunset with a Tiki cocktail. Our room was small but perfectly designed for efficient, accommodating use, and surprisingly comfortable for two. It was well appointed with a spot for everything and thoughtful design for all a traveler’s needs. The lighting was attractive and easy to adjust. My only complaint- the corridors are a little dingy and tired, maybe too apropos of the dormitory theme. We stayed 6 nights and really enjoyed this home base. We would definitely pick this hotel again for the full experience; great place to rest and rejuvenate while working and playing in NYC.

My check in experience was great and the concierge person (hero?) made me feel welcome and taken care of. There was one unfriendly front desk person later on when I had a question that was pretty negative (in the evening) but otherwise great service and team. Rooms are snug but hip decor. AC was really loud and the room was a tad dusty (might need to clean their vents).

I had a solo room for a couple days, and for me and this trip it was just what I needed. While I can recommend it, there are a few warnings or pieces of advice I have: -The solo room is small, think of an interior cruise ship room, with a twin bed and compact bathroom. If you’re tall you’ll likely be uncomfortable with a standard twin bed and low ceilings. -The shower was actually spacious for the room, but the toilet area and sink were tight. I’m a smaller plus size girl and while I didn’t have any trouble there wasn’t any room to spare. -While the space was fine for a couple of days I wouldn’t choose this room for any longer trip, I’d go for one of their standard rooms. Aside from a bit of cabin fever I’m not sure where I’d store my suitcase or clothes. There’s no closet or shelves, though they do have hooks to hang coats and such.

Reached out to Freehand NYC via their “contact us” page but I have not heard anything for weeks now. Stayed here from 7/14 to 7/15. While taking a shower, the fire alarm went off. I quickly jumped out the shower thinking the whole building was evacuating, however it was only my unit with an alarm going off. Minutes passed and I had to call the front desk for assistance. They said someone would come up but no one came. The housecleaning staff that was on my floor came to see the commotion and said they would call for someone else. Another person comes later, asking if I was okay (if there was an actual fire I would have been ashes by now), says the shower probably set the alarm off, and then says engineering will turn off the alarm. The alarm was blaring in my unit for more than 30 minutes at this point. And I had to stand there with my door open, hair dripping of water until someone came up to help. Really uncomfortable. I would not stay here again nor would I recommend anyone stay here as the team was not attentive during my stay or after when I contacted them. Nor will I ever stay at a place where I have to take a cold shower to avoid a false fire drill.

I enjoyed stay for the most part. I got the solo room. The cleaning lady is such a sweetie! Unfortunately the fire alarm goes off when showering due to steam; and employee had to come turn it off. I was in Manhattan for a back surgery consultation. Most of the workers were nice, yet when I tried asked for a delivery be brought to my room(I was in pain and my cane broke), he proceeded to repeatedly tell me “we don’t do that” and cutting me off. I spoke to a manger and he explained it is not in their job description, which I completely understand. I wish the worker said that instead. He brought it up and made a note for my stay. I thanked and apologized to the manager. A lot of restaurants in the area, mainly Asian inspired. A Vegan bbq joint too. I went to the chipotle nearby by! Hallways are a bit dark. Hotel has nice security that makes you feel safe. Have to swipe to enter elevator and room. Solo room bed is a bit low to the floor. Beautiful view of the street from the room.

It’s like almost homeless experience. Room window was very thin you could hear every noise from outside overnight, even I felt some outside outgas smell. Do not waste the money. They will destroy your sleep. I didn’t see any kind service as well. The worst hotel in my life.
