One of the best museums I've been to. You'll need a map, you can easily spend the whole day here. The gem/geode collection was beautiful, the dinosaur exhibit was so cool and had a lot of real fossils/bones. Loved seeing the different animal species. Also the sea creature exhibit was beautifully laid out!!!!

Beautiful building. I don’t know how they keep it so spotless. Long line to enter before doors opened, but it moves quickly and is well worth the wait. Unbelievable, interactive displays and the same dinosaurs roam the halls as they did 60 years ago, which is when I was here last. Perfect place for kids to spend the day. For floors, and a lot of walking. Be sure to schedule a Planetarium visit as well. Gift shops, cafeterias, bathrooms and plenty of employees roaming the halls to help. Beautiful place.

Super awesome museum. We had an amazing day on-site. Really fun and interesting exhibits with an awesome application to help you get around. “Then why are you only giving it 3 stars?” Here’s why: 1) the security line being the same for same day ticket buyers as city pass holders and advanced tickets buyers makes zero sense in my opinion. Why did I take the time to buy in advance AND also spend a pretty penny on all the extra exhibits online (sharks, invisible worlds, world beyond earth) only to not be able to make it on time because the wait to get in through security was 45 minutes? 2) none of the water fountains were functional! 3) as none of the water fountains were functional we had to spend 5$ per person per bottle of water. Not only that but the food was horrendous and overpriced and no food was allowed to be brought in. Where I am from families have accessibility to full days in a museum because they can pack their own food from home and consume it in dedicated areas. Who can afford a 15$ sandwich that looks how mine does in the attached photo? For the price you pay to get in, the cost of food, the sales in gift shops who then ask for donations there honestly is no reason for everything to be as pricey as it is. Not worth it with all of the additions when this could otherwise be a 5 star attraction.

Absolutely fantastic and amazing museum. I visited many museums across the world but AMNH NYC is my favourite. You must book tickets online (received free tickets; corporate membership), need to go early as huge lineup will be there and map is a must. I enjoyed all exhibits but mostly the gems and stones section, giant whale, elephants, dinosaur and countries section. There is restaurant in the lower floor serves freshly cooked meals and food is really delicious. All staff are very helpful. Highly recommended

This museum is absolutely awesome if you are interested in history, space, animals, and rocks. It is incredibly easy to get lost in this expensive building filled with tons of exhibits. Tickets start at $23 for adults. If you are a New York resident and have proof, tickets become a “pay what you wish” option. No matter what you do, make sure you make take a reservations online! This is a must if you want to get into this museum. Lines are incredibly long and you will not be able to come here without a reservation online. I do wish this museum had a better flow as it can be quite confusing to get to different areas. They don’t all inner connect, making this kind of a crazy scramble of people at peak hours. I really enjoyed their exhibits of animals as well as their exhibits of different people throughout history.

I loved visiting this museum today! It has only gotten better since the last times I visited. My 5 year old had fun in all the exhibits. The Space Show in the Hayden Planetarium was awesome as always. The butterfly garden was so cool, and the Invisible Worlds exhibit had my son running around the room for a half hour!! Also the blue whale giant screen 45 minute movie was great. I can’t wait to visit again!

Great museum! You can easily spend hours exploring. The highlight for us was the dinosaur section. Avoid birds of New York if you've just had lunch! The terrace was closed when we were there and we had to keep our mask on at all times due to COVID restrictions so we couldn't have a drink of water throughout. If you go during the pandemic have a drink just before going in.

Huge museum. You could spend the day there, particularly if you have children. Get a map when you enter: you will need it! Exhibits are beautifully curated and fascinating. Well worth the admission fee, particularly if visiting with a CityPass ticket. We visited at opening time and had to queue outside, but as soon as it opened we were admitted very quickly.

Such an iconic in epic Museum. You could spend so much time here, and the exhibits are incredible. We went toward the end of the day before they closed and they were a lot less people than if we came earlier. They are closed certain days of the week that were surprising to us, so just double check that they’re open before planning time there. Definitely a must see if you are visiting!

I came here with my 6 year old son and we had a blast. I've been to this museum many times prior, but it was his first time. He enjoyed a lot the exhibits, especially the dinosaur, aquatic and the insect exhibits. There's a lot to see here in the museum, especially considering the cost of entry, which I think is affordable for what they offer. All the exhibits offer a wealth of knowledge and the presentation is lovely. We also did the butterfly exhibit which you have to pay extra for, but it was completely worth it. You're in a humidified environment surrounded by exotic butterflies. Do note that you can't directly touch them but they can/will land on you. I had one land on my nose, and one landed on my son (he wasn't too happy about that). Either way, it's something I highly suggest experiencing. I recommend you visit if you're even slightly interested in the history of the world. And don't shy away from the idea of bringing children as there's plenty of entertainment for all ages.

Beyond the exhibits, the museum provides serene spots for contemplation, inviting visitors to relax and absorb the wealth of knowledge. One of the best museums I've ever been. The representation of animals is very cool. The museum is gigantic and has many floors, allow at least 2 and a half hours to explore part of the museum calmly. The ticket was 26 dollars on 02/25/2024. You can buy tour tickets online or at the entrance. I would recommed you do it online to avoid lines.

My favorite museum in NYC. One visit is never enough because there is so much to see: the planetarium, the large whale and marine life, the butterfly conservatory, the exhibits, the dinosaur, the hall of gems, the forest floor area, birds... I've been here over 10 times and it's well worth it. I discover new things each time. Plan to spend at least 2 hours to get a decent glimpse into the museum.

This place is phenomenal! This museum is so big, we spent two and a half hours making a very quick walk through, and only managed to make it through less than half. Amazing fossils of dinosaurs and other extinct animals. Residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut can pay what they wish for admission. One of the best natural history museums out there. A must visit!

Chicagoan here 👋: YOU MUST GO TO THIS MUSEUM!!! They offer an immense amount of interactive experience that can be enjoyed by all ages. Every hall I entered was just a whole new world of information that was perfectly laid out and explained. Highly recommend seeing the dinosaurs and gems. I feel like I didn't even see half of the exhibits but I'm definitely going to go back again in the future! 🙌

A dream for any museum lover. Buy tickets and book shows in advance, there's a small lineup outside to enter, but it is quick. Once inside, it is almost a days trip. There's way many things to see, experience. It's like the entire movie "Night at the Mueseum" came alive. You can bring your own reusable water bottles and there are fountains every few corners. We did not try the food inside. But go prepared, go fresh and enjoy. It's a wonderland!

I visited the Natural Museum in New York City and was thoroughly impressed! The exhibits were captivating, providing a fascinating journey through the wonders of natural history. The displays were well-curated, offering a perfect blend of education and entertainment. The museum's attention to detail and interactive features made the experience both informative and engaging. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in the beauty and diversity of our planet's natural world.

Amazing experience! The expositions are soooo good and organized. There's hand sanitizer in every entrance, indicators for the 6ft. distance and arrows to follow the right way. They also take your temperature when you go in. Now they have two extra expositions, T-Rex and Color experience. I went to the T-Rex and it was worthy the extra money (I have to clarify that I love Jurassic Park so to me it was worthy). They have gift shops in every floor and it's not so expensive. Bathrooms were really clean and all the personal was very professional and attentive. Take your kids or family or friends, it's awesome!

The American Museum of Natural History is the largest natural history museum in the world with a mission commensurately monumental in scope. The entire museum spans 4 city blocks and consists of some 25 interconnected buildings. Though today the phrase "natural history" is restricted to the study of animal life, the museum—founded in 1869 on the heels of discoveries by Darwin and other Victorians—uses it in its original sense: that is, the study of all natural objects, animal, vegetable and mineral.

While I have been here many times before, this is my first time since the pandemic. The museum as always is sure to impress. I would recommend starting your day on the higher floors if you arrive early to get some cool pictures with the dinosaur fossils. With regards to the museum during covid: For starters, entry takes a bit of time. We arrived 15 after open and waited in line for about 20 minutes. It wasn't terrible. I recommend buying your tickets in advance. While it won't get you inside the building faster, it will allow you to bypass the long and slow ticket line that splits off once you're inside. There is no eating or drinking in the museum aside from inside the cafeteria. (Cafe on the upper floors is closed? Not sure why) They have covered all water fountains with boxes (this is a questionable to me. Nearly everywhere you go these days allows you to take your mask down momentarily for food or water). Avoid the pizza in the cafeteria, it's easily the worst pizza I've ever had in my life. Gelato was good. Finally, the "controversial" statue of Roosevelt in front of the building is under heavy construction and has large tenting and barriers. You won't be getting a good picture of the outside of the museum any time soon. Still the museum I loved as a kid, but COVID has definitely made staying the whole day a bit more tough with not being able to stop and drink and eat at your leisure. Overheard many people discussed leaving and coming back so that they could eat.

The American Museum of Natural History in New York is an impressive museum that shows the diversity of life on earth. It has many interesting exhibits, such as the dinosaur skeletons, the animal dioramas, the meteorite collection and the Rose Center for Earth and Space with the Hayden Planetarium. The museum is very large and I would recommend allowing a day to see everything. I found the museum very educational and entertaining. It is a great experience for children and adults. Overall, the entrance fee is quite high. I would not recommend the museum's own restaurant in the basement. The quality and selection didn't convince me. In addition, the prices were much too high.

Amazing exhibits. Specially loved the insect one and invisible worlds. We bought the special exhibits ticket so we were able to watch the serengeti movie and visit the shark & world beyond earth exhibits too. I recommend buying it if you are not going to visit again anytime soon. Also if you are a resident of NY/NJ/CT, you can pay what you wish so that’s a great perk.

This place is beyond awesome! This is definitely a New York City institution!! This has so many things to offer! So fun and so educational. They are very good about checking people to make sure they are not sick. Many checkpoints before going in. The color exhibit was just ok. It was a bit crowded. The T-Rex exhibit was not and it was totally worth it. The museum shop has so many neat stuff to buy. Staff was helpful where things are. The planetarium and space sections where the rocks are, are still closed. I definitely recommend this place for tourists and locals!! Enjoy!!

The one of the best Museum in New York City. I love it. So big and a lots of story behind, dinosaurs, wild life, ocean life, history and a lot more. And of course after the movie " Night in the Museum" more interested to people. Good to see almost everything what it was in the movie too. When I went there, it was a waiting line but not too long. I spent the whole day there and then went for a walk in the central park.

This is the best museum experience I have ever had. I spent an entire day there (11am-5pm), saw everything there was to see (and there was a lot to see - I walked more than 8km only inside the museum). There is something for everyone in there. The most impressive exhibits for me were, of course, the dinosaurs skeletons, and also the gemstones hall. Both were absolutely mesmerizing! Apt for all ages (families will enjoy it even more!)

Renewed membership, which was pretty painless. Unfortunately the shark special exhibit was sold out, so if that's what your going to see definitely reserve tickets in advance for it. The newly completed gems & minerals exhibit was spectacular. One of the best exhibits the museum has ever put on. There are a few fun interactive bits of it as well, great for kids, and kids at heart

This is a very nice science museum with different shows inside. This is a great option for local New Yorkers because you can enter by paying a donation of choice (as low as $1). Toddlers and adults can enjoy the exhibits so it's very diverse a and accessible. It has elevators and ramps making it stroller and wheelchair accessible. The food is very expensive so eat before or after. I posted Cafe food prices in my pics. I highly recommend.

The place is incredible, very big, well organized, clean and well planned. It takes a lot of time to explore. The museum is certainly worth several visits.

I don’t know how anyone could give this museum less than 5 stars. I spent 5 hours here walking around learning. I did not buy a ticket in advance and didn’t have any problems getting in. I did go right when the museum opened however. You can definitely tell what exhibits are new and which one have been there for a while. Put a good part of the day aside when you come here because you will get lost in history. There is an app that will help you navigate while you are there.

This was my third time visiting and always worth it. We went on a Sunday and 100% recommend buying tickets in advance, and reserving your time slots for some of the exhibitions, we went straight in while there was a lot of people in line. The new wing is beautiful and has a lot of fun new activities. As always, we got lost quite a few times and the staff was very helpful.

We were walking by admiring the building from the planetarium entrance and there was a security guard answering someone’s question. He then also said, that the museum was free for the next hour! So we went in. The staff was super friendly. When we asked what to see in an hour she said, dinosaurs with no hesitation. So that’s what we did. It was great. They were huge and scary looking. Lots of great written plaques and written tidbits on the displays. As we were leaving we were tempted by the many other areas but the museum was closing. We would highly recommend this place even if only for the dinosaurs.

It breaks my heart to not give this place 5 stars, but in my mind a 5 star museum would have better maps and be easier to navigate, it would have more bathrooms that are easier to find, it wouldn't dedicate so many elevators for "staff only", and at their ridiculous prices the food would be better than jail grub. The exhibits were great, some a bit dated in appearance but still really interesting. I'd love to go back post pandemic and give it another shot.

This place is an absolutely classic. It is probably the best museum of its kind in the world. My favorite are the dioramas with the animals from all over the world. This museum is huge, definitely the biggest one I’ve ever been too. They have everything here from the early humans to life now. There is something for literally everyone here and expect to spend a good amount of time here because of how much there is to see. If you live in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut you can pay any amount you want but if you don’t live in any of those places the price for admission is $28 for adults, $16 for children, and $22 for students and people over age 60. I highly recommend anyone to go here.

Went with my girls to the American Museum of Natural History and we loved it. There is so much to see and learn. This place never gets old. My youngest was giddy with how excited she was to be there and she’s a teenager. If you plan to watch any of the payed exhibitions, I highly recommend you buy it ahead of time as these get booked months in advanced. There are many bathroom options throughout the museum. It’s a lot of walking so come comfortable. Price per person varies: you have the option of becoming a member (family $179/139 adult), residents (between $14-$25 dollars depending on child, adult, or senior) or Pay What You Wish ($1-$25 dollars with a suggested price option), non-resident ( $16-$28 dollars depending on child, adult, or senior). Can’t wait to visit again.

Great museum! I suggest to buy tickets online. A full visit may require 5 to 6 hours. The best areas are dinosaurs and minerals in my opinion. Book the show at the planetarium, if available: the little extra price is worth! 4 stars and not 5 because personnel is sometimes rude and not welcoming at all, especially at security checks, cafeteria and food court.

Certainly, one of the greatest museums in the entire world. I haven't been here in 40 years and I am amazed at how much this museum has changed while keeping some of the same mammal picture-window exhibits that I remember from the 1960s. So why only three stars? We arrived here on a Monday morning shortly before opening and had tickets for 10 a.m. entry. By the time we arrived at 9:45 a.m., there was an immense line of people lining the street and wrapping themselves around the corner. Once the museum opened, that line moved very slowly. Fortunately, once inside, if you had a scannable ticket on your phone you could get in immediately. I am amazed that there isn't better management of the lines getting inside. Even though there are signs posted all over the grounds outside mandating attendance is by appointment only, it seems like they still allow walk-ins to visit and that is apparently why the lines are tremendous at opening. If we did not buy our tickets in advance, we would have been stuck in another incredibly long line inside the building just to purchase tickets for that day. So, in all, a very stressful process of just getting inside the museum. I think the trick is to come a little later in the day. There is just so much to see here. We paid for the "everything" pass so we got to go into the butterfly exhibit which was really cool. We also saw the Hayden Planetarium show, but sadly, it wasn't as impressive seeing it as an adult as it was a child. That huge projection machine that used to sit in the middle of the floor is now gone and replaced by hidden projectors. The show seems more like a movie than the celestial event of my childhood years. I also miss the old planetarium that was torn down on the museum property in favor of integrating it more into the museum. Be aware this museum gets very crowded. It's also a haven for children, and as such, there were always the constant sounds of screaming that echoed through every exhibit and after a while became very cumbersome to the ears. As usual, parents not supervising their children as they ran across the hallways, leaned all over the protective railing, and put their fingers all over the exhibits. If this kind of behavior drives you crazy I would avoid the museum altogether or visit in the fall/winter when school is in session.

Membership! Membership! Membership! If you are not living far far away, membership is definitely your choice. Because you will not just visit here once! This place is amazing! My kid cried when we are about to leave and I have to promise that we will come back again tomorrow, which we did! :) The parking is $46 a day, fair for NYC location. You need to park in the parking lot first then walk to the museum. The signs are super easy to get you to the correct entrance. There are several food courts located in difference buildings and levels. Price is fair, a slice of pizza + fries + chicken nuggets costs $20. The new Glider Center is shockingly great! The insects section shows the scale of several major species. With magnifier, everything is so clear! Even with the live animals. The Invisible World is a must see. Everybody loves it! My kids watched it again and again and had so much fun each time. Our favorite part is the Planetarium. We even found the video of how the Magnetic Field was formed!! That answered lots of my son’s question and he really really enjoyed it! We will definitely come back!

I've always been interested in universe, and I love to learn more about it .. As I've gotten older, I've decided to focus more on Learning through Joy. Therefore, this museum is really a great start for you to learn .. I would suggest to buy the ticket via the App to have an easy access. I also suggest to have a good break fast and ur favorite coffee before you enter the museum because there is no good place inside the museum for fine food and coffee.

Absolutely amazing! You HAVE TO GO! This location had the most amazing information, artifacts, exhibits… just everything really. I was there for almost 3 hours with my family and still felt rushed. So much information to absorb and process. So cool for kids especially all of the animal, reptile, amphibian, dinosaurs!!!!! Definitely book your tickets in advance, show up early to get in line and know there are multiple entrances- some way more busy than others. Lots of food/snack options so you can stay all day and enjoy learning. Please go!

What an incredible museum. Full of well maintained and displayed exhibits, set out in a beautiful building. Staff are friendly and helpful and I’d recommend you pre book your free slot at the planetarium as you need a ticket to get in to the show. Word of warning, the food in the lower level cafe is terrible and very expensive, so bring your own food and drink.

Great place. Just ensure you make a reservation. There’s no food inside and there’s nothing to eat inside. Parking there for 4 hours will cost you about $45. Download the app for the place so you can get around efficiently. Go see the color exhibit and the TRex exhibit. Worth it! Have your kids watch the “night at the museum” ahead of time so they can find the characters. But be aware lots of exhibits are closed currently so depending on what you want to see might deter you. The food trucks outside are good also but kinda pricey.

Parked at their garage, after spending 1 hour waiting, I was told that due to covid I need a reservation. Ok I understand that, but you couldn't say that to people before they park? Went back to get my car, and it was blocked. The person who works there said that the car owner left and didn't leave him the keys. When I was able to get out I had to pay full rate for parking. Thanks for ruining my kids day because of your poor management.

The best museum I have seen, beautiful and very large. One day you do not have to go through it completely if you want to appreciate it well. But the only thing I did not like was the service, it was a terrible one, the employees with angry faces all the time and they got upset if you asked them anything.

It’s been a few years since I’ve visited the museum of natural history in NYC, and it has also been approximately 40 years since my first visit. It occurred to me how remarkable it was that the content, presentation, and experience felt remarkably fresh and relevant. Using the museum’s Explorer app to aid in navigation between exhibits and to expand on their content was a revelation. No debt museum is now pay as you wish for residence of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Furthermore, if you have an IDNYC card, you’re entitled to a free one year membership for one adult and up to four children. Advance online registration for an entry time a lot is now required. I visited on a very busy winter break Monday with my nine-year-old daughter, and everyone was masked and respectful of Covid protocols. We had a blast making memories together; very highly recommended!

Be aware that it is HUGE! If you have one day to visit, my recommendation would be to line up early, to maximize the time there and before it gets super hot if you visit in the summer. Get some area that you are interested and spend your focus there. You shouldn’t really force yourself to walk through all of the halls like I did, you might get tired and don’t have enough time to enjoy the things it offers fully.

A must see in NYC. Important - make a reservation in advance, visit early in the morning and use side entrance. Otherwise you may wait for a long time. The floor with dinosaurs and extinct animals is really amazing, lots of things to see. For the part with living animals, I believe it might be better to visit ZOO. The biodiversity part is kinda strange, recommend to skip it. From the exhibitions regarding human cultures, the one about Asian culture was imo the best.

We were pushed for time and only had 90 minutes to spare so this wonderful , but huge museum could be very daunting. We had admissions from our 5 things city pass ( very good value) and just needed to sort out a quick slot for entry . A lovely lady near reception suggested we join the next free guided tour at 11:15 to see as many highlights as possible in 75 minutes. Note the museum is huge . Even several days will not do this justice so be realistic in what are your key things to see . The tour was great and Pat our guide was charming and very knowledgeable. She was a volunteer and this was her first tour since covid suspended tours so we were very lucky. It showed us the highlights of the lower ground floor . If we had more time we would have gone up to see the dinosaurs and watch a few of the films . If you have seen the Night at the museum films then just walking through the diorama halls is a great fun thing to do. A great visit and we are very thankful to Pat to showing us the highlights and her favourite things.

During my recent visit to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience despite the crowd. This world-renowned institution boasts an extensive collection of exhibits that cover various aspects of natural history, from dinosaurs to outer space, making it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in exploring our world's fascinating past and present. Navigating through the bustling halls, I found the exhibits to be well-curated and engaging, offering a wealth of information and captivating displays. Although the museum was quite crowded at the time of my visit, I still managed to appreciate and immerse myself in the vast array of exhibits. One thing to note for future visitors is the lack of water fountains on the premises due to lead pipes. It's essential to bring your own water bottle or plan to purchase refreshments from the on-site cafes to stay hydrated during your visit. In summary, the American Museum of Natural History is a fantastic destination for a fun and educational outing. Despite the crowded conditions and the absence of water fountains, the museum still offers an engaging and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Be sure to add this iconic New York City institution to your must-see list!

This iconic institution is a treasure trove of knowledge, captivating exhibits, and a gateway to the wonders of our world and beyond. The exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History are thoughtfully curated, covering a wide range of disciplines including paleontology, anthropology, astronomy, biology, and more. Each section is meticulously designed to engage and educate visitors of all ages, making it a perfect destination for families, students, and enthusiasts alike. One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the Hall of Dinosaurs, where life-size dinosaur skeletons transported me back millions of years. The level of detail and the immersive experience created within this exhibit were truly remarkable. It was a humbling experience to stand in the presence of these ancient giants and gain a deeper understanding of their existence. Another captivating section was the Hall of Biodiversity, which showcased the incredible diversity of life on our planet. From intricate dioramas representing various ecosystems to interactive displays explaining the delicate balance of nature, this exhibit underscored the importance of conservation and our responsibility to protect the Earth's biodiversity. To make the most of your visit, I recommend planning your time wisely, as the museum can be quite extensive. Be sure to check the museum's website for any temporary exhibits or special events happening during your visit, as they often provide additional opportunities for exploration and learning.

Absolutely the best!!! it’s not a trip to New York. If you don’t go to the museum of natural history. So much to see so many great exhibits when you’re inside you know you’re in the right place when you are greeted by a giant Tyrannosaurus rex. Wonderful museum for anyone of any age. If you get a chance, you should go see the new Gilder center. It just opened and it’s spectacular. It’s laid out nicely and it’s easy to navigate and the butterfly exhibit should not be missed.

Museum of Natural History is a fascinating place to spend time. You can drift back in time, travel through different cultures and regions on earth, or wonder off the earth into the space beyond. A museum continually adapting. The Natural History beautifully renovated the planetarium 20 years ago. It was cool to go as a kid but getting run down and the Rose Center was a flying-car level upgrade. The Gilder Center is this generation’s renovation. It’s an architecturally engaging space; invites watching and reading about exhibits. A real level up for drawing visitors into exhibits. The museum seems conscious of its history and maintains itself as an exhibition of how nature has been exhibited. Its famous dioramas are maintained very well. That they don’t feel out of place in a modern science museum is an achievement. The Natural History and (across the park) the Met are great to take kids and people in town. They’re great to wander through and have a moment; remember visits as a kid; finding something new. TIP: look up tickets online and visit on a weekday.

A must-see venue when you visit New York. Center west side of New York Central Park. Good for the young kids, a lot of Dino fossils, stuffed animals, and a lot of cool collections. Ticket prices are reasonable, around $28 per adult, and children between 3-12 are $16. Opens between 10 AM - 5:30 PM. If you are using subway can enter from the 81st Street B/C station. Parking is available at the Museum through 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue with a hefty price of $26/hour. The parking garage is open from 6 am–11 pm on weekdays, 8am–11pm on weekends.

The Secret World of Elephants is a highly recommended exhibition. You are to get immersed in the world these magnificent animals by uncovering the science behind ancient and modern elephants’ evolution, anatomy, and brilliant minds. As you walk through this approximately 45-second exhibition, you and families, friends, and students will find out interesting information about elephants. For instance, have you ever heard of dwarf elephants? Let me tell you that their fossils have actually been found on islands in several parts of the world such as Sicily, Italy. Similarly, we will all become more aware of how elephants are protected by tourism; in fact, in countries such as Thailand tourism that benefits local people seem to be the most sustainable for both elephant and humans. The exhibition also highlights the relevance of some elephant characters in our lives like Dumbo the flying baby elephant in the 1941 film by Disney. All of us will be guided to keep learning about elephants. The exhibition suggested three strategies to do so: 1. READ about elephants, listen to podcasts, watch documentaries or attend exhibitions like The Secret World of Elephants, 2. STAY INFORMED about how elephants are affected by habitat loss, climate change, and the illegal ivory trade, and 3. LEARN ABOUT the way climate change can affect elephants. These are just some examples of the interesting things you are to get from The Secret World of Elephants.

First time in New York and the museum was definitely on the to do list, great place with so much to see over 4 floors! Seeing some unusual real insects was my favourite and everything that came with it, so much to do and see so you'd need a full day here but we only had several hours. Getting in was a long wait as no one was in a rush to get tickets sorted so sucked some of the fun out of it, shame really. Would visit again though having more time to do so, 4* because of the ticket issuing service.

The American Museum of Natural History is like stepping into a time capsule of awe and wonder. From the lifelike stuffed animals to the towering dinosaur skeletons, every corner tells a story of our planet's rich history. Despite the hustle and bustle of fellow explorers, the museum manages to stay spotless, and the staff are friendly and helpful, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. Probably the greatest museum in the world. You can virtually everything in relation to the history of Mother Earth and the development of its living species. I’ve been there probably 50 times or more, but I find it more and more fascinating every single time. My personal favorites are the Hall of Biodiversity and the Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life. I’m fascinated by both land life and marine life. Especially with the latter, due to the fact that there’s much to be discovered in the deeps of the ocean. Also, we don’t know that much about it, so marine animals are even a bigger mystery. The Nature of Color is probably the most beautiful thing that I’ve seen indoors. The colors were so vivid and stunningly beautiful. I was stunned by the T-Rex exhibit. I’m not yet used to seeing dinosaurs with feathers, instead of scales. Yet, the baby T-Rex looks cute. I also loved the Dinosaurs Among Us exhibit some years ago. I haven’t visited since the pandemic broke out and I don’t know how does it function today, but I’ve heard that there’s a group scheme that works pretty well. I do hope that everything would be okay soon enough!

I love this museum. Its huge! We went two days in a row and bought a membership. They have very strong covid protocols and we felt safe visiting. Watch the night at the museum movie before you go for inspiration. I love the mix of old and new exhibits. I could also spend hours in the museum store. My 9 yr old loved the t rex exhibit and the Tibet exhibit. My husband loved the ocean exhibits and I loved the early human history.

One of the best museums I've ever been to! It's more than just natural history, as there are many displays of human art from around the world. There is a great sea life display with a gigantic whale, all preserved taxidermy from long ago. There are displays of animals of all kinds, and models of ancient human empires. Of course everyone knows its famed Dino bone collection, fossils and casts of the most famous dinosaurs, as well as displays on evolution (I never knew the horse was so closely related to the dolphin!) and other very informative things! And my favorite part is its "Epcot-Like" Planetarium the Hayden Planetarium, which currently runs a great show starring Neil Degrasse Tyson with the latest tech to show the mysteries of the universe, energy, and it's darkmatter. The big bang show below is not to be missed, especially with its unique screen, and the staircase down showcasing just how short human's existence has been by giving a scaled timeline of the universe (and some scale models of planets and the human brain. Down on the ground, there are actual space rocks you can touch. Yes I touched something from space! There are also model ecosystems, and scales to weigh you on other worlds.

Not worth the price. Don’t go there. The COVID-19 security measures are excessive. The penguin at the garage entry asks to check your trunk. Then other penguins upstairs check your temperature and make you go through a metal detector. Long lines and waits make you feel like TSA. The heat inside is 80 degrees. Bring your shorts and flip flops. No air ventilation whatsoever. 50% of expositions are closed. No room to eat. The cafeteria is closed. You decide whether it’s worth it.

First time back since the closures. Only encountered two families with horribly misbehaving children who they watched try to destroy the place, including a little boy with two toy cars rolling them all over displays, including glass in The Nature of Color. They did nothing to stop him. Most followed rules and followed arrows for safety flow. I said 'MOST.' Got trying at times, with the obvious tourist, who for so reason, insist on getting in the way, not following flow and being pushy. Yeah, not looking forward to their return to the City. A lot was still closed. Interactive displays and Discovery Room were closed, due to safety. Was a nice walk around, and good crowd control. Only a few non-compliant, but we're quickly put into place by staff. I think I'll renew membership next year. Probably won't return till Fall. I used to visit almost daily.

I must say this is one of the best Natural History museums in the world, it is crazy, absolutely full to the brim with the most rare fossils and huge exhibits. But, (there’s always a but) the age is showing, the museum in its core never changes, but that is not what gives this review 4 stars, it is the way they decide not to innovate around the exhibit. The dust sets over the pieces and it’s pretty noticeable, but still, one of the greatest of its kind.

  • 5/5 Chiara S. 2 years ago on Google
The museum is rich in information and details of different types of studies, tells the history of the species from the beginning, showing perfect replicas of animals that lived in the past and animals of the present. The video of the brontosaurus room is wonderful, it explained very well all the history from the past to the present and continued showing the sequence of rooms to be followed. We also love studying the universe, planets and other galaxies that have been discovered by studying lights in space. We love museums!

The American Museum of Natural History is a staple in the life of any triboro area individual especially if you grew up here. It’s a must see at least once in your life so we went here for my beau’s bday since he has never been. It’s a shame some exhibits and features are closed due to covid but regardless we were thrilled to be able to see the classics! The planetarium is one of my favorite places so definitely go purchase tickets to see one of the films there. The temperature changes inside are drastic it can be freezing in one area and sweltering in another so I recommend you layer so you can adapt to the different areas. There is a lot to see and do, so make use of their free app in the App Store or you will get lost. Start at the very top floor and work your way down, otherwise you might get overwhelmed and quit half way through lol. They did an amazing job updating the mineral rooms, I kind of miss the dated old seventies version that reminded me of when I was a kid but this newly renovated area was gorgeous.

Lots of exhibits. The Dinosaur and Gems exibits were my favorite. Seen the special Space show, definitely worth the extra $5. It's in a theater room with a dome screen. I was in the museum for 4.5 hours and needed to rush towards the end. Go early to see everything.

No words to describe how wonderful is this museum, it's have the opportunity to see how our universe and our planet were born, how they evolved and the human race too. We can see different culturas from around the World and the wild animals from everywhere. And the dinosaurs... It's really awesome, yo definitely have to go!

It's crazy how much stuff is in this place. Took my 11 yr old daughter and she really loved it. We made a game out of finding some key pieces from "night at the museum" and then stopped at other stuff that interested us along the way. Hint: Rexy is in the last room on the 4th floor. We almost left without finding it and she really wanted to see him. Spent about 2.5 hrs. The app was a little helpful in finding items, bathrooms and elevators once you figured it out. Entered directly from Subway stop. Supposed to have time slot reserved before entering when you buy tickets. I bought them on my phone while standing in line. Took about 30 min in line to get in.

Some fabulous exhibits. Much more than you can see on one visit. Very educational but not a lot fun for kids. Best museum cafeteria I've seen. Worth the visit for sure.

The place is spectacular, there are many varieties of pieces for each concept. At least, to be able to appreciate it you need many hours since it is immense. It has 4 floors. I recommend that you start at the 4th floor and work your way down.

The Gem and mineral exhibit was great. The mannequins and models all over are old fashioned in a good way. Because of forced timed entry, you need to book tickets way in advance to be able to enter in the morning, so you can see most of the exhibits. If you are forced to start late, go to the main attractions first, then see what you can, after. Main attractions are usually at the very end of winding labyrinths of different exhibitions. To get to the 24 minute film of space on the 3rd floor of the planetarium, you need to take the regular stairs or elevator, not the elevator close to the planetarium. The website does not provide a price for adding on the special exibitions, such as the 24 minute film in the upper planetarium theater, until you check out. If you show up with general admission tickets, you need to ask them to add it on after entry, in the main entrance. They need more accessible technology for people with limited English, such as audio guides. I asked all around and they only provide translation for special events.

The best Museum I have ever seen in my life. I would love to visit it again and spend a whole day through their floors. I must if you are a in NY. I would also recommend the special exhibition "Worlds Beyond Earth". You will love it. The restaurant at the ground floor was really good, a great option if you are looking for a quick meal.

Amazing museum!! It is huge and if I'd go again, I would take a full day to visit.. There is so much to discover! You shouldn’t force yourself to walk through all of the halls as you probably won't have enough time to see everything. I'd recommend to set a focus on what you're interested in the most and then see the rest after. Also, the planetarium is amazing - I watched the beyond earth show there and I was very fascinated by how well it's done and how great the animation was.

Our hotel gave us free museum admission tickets, so we went. We went on a Wednesday around 3pm and it was extremely busy! We had to wait at least 45 mins to even access the museum. Once we got in, they had a lot of cool exhibits and there was definitely a lot to see! Be sure to plan a couple of hours here, if you want to see everything. One of the best museums that we've ever been to!

  • 5/5 Aggie W. 1 year ago on Google
It’s massive! With over 40 exhibitions, you could easily get lost in this huge museum. It’s so informative with displays of almost every aspect of nature and universe: ocean, forest, space, mammals from every continent, human origin, gems and minerals, etc. You need a whole day to explore all of them. The curations are very clear, explaining science in a simple understandable language. I especially like the human origin section which shows how and where we as a human being came from. The Hall of African Mammals was super impressive and amazing with life size animals. Make sure to download its official app Explorer to navigate inside the museum.

I have been to this museum twice and I love it! They are always renovating and bringing new pieces to the museum. PLEASE!! don't forget to go down. Apart from the dinosaurs, I think that is the most fabulous thing about this museum. all the stone and culture that this floor has is exquisite! I would go again, waiting for the expansion of the part of the Amazonia that is under construction!

part of my New York City Pass and I have to say, it was an incredible experience. The museum offers a wealth of information and exhibits about different cultures from around the world, including a strong focus on Asian, African, and American cultures. The collection is vast, detailed, and well-organized. Each exhibit is well curated and informative, with interactive elements that make it engaging for visitors of all ages. I appreciate how the exhibitions bring the visitors closer to the history, cultures and natural environment of different regions of the world. One of the highlights of my visit was the Hall of Biodiversity, which has an amazing display of animals and plants from around the world. Additionally, the Butterfly Conservatory is a wonderful way to experience the beauty and fragility of butterflies. I highly recommend visiting the museum to anyone who is interested in natural history and different cultures. It's a great place to spend an afternoon, and the city pass makes it an affordable way to visit one of the most important museums in the world.

For anyone interested in learning more about space, our planet, and the forces that shape them, a visit to the American Museum of Natural History is a must. The space exploration and earth structure exhibits are truly awe-inspiring and educational. The Big Bang show is an excellent way to immerse oneself in the fascinating origins of our universe, and it's no wonder you highly recommend it. Exploring natural elements and understanding the history of our planet Earth provides a unique perspective on our existence and the immense scale of the cosmos. It's amazing how such experiences can evoke a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. Not only will you be able to witness the marvels of the universe through captivating exhibits and presentations, but you will also leave with a deeper understanding of our place in the cosmos. So, if you ever find yourself with time to spare and a desire to explore the mysteries of the universe, be sure to visit the American Museum of Natural History. It's an experience you won't soon forget.

We had such a wonderful visit! It was our last day in New York City and we had 3 hours to spend. Saw so many wonderful things and very happy that we went! All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful! It was so fun to meet Iris, the librarian! The new section is absolutely beautiful and the construction is amazing and unique! The gift shops had a variety of items for purchase and we got some fun t-shirts and books. We would definitely go again! It was really cool to see the T-Rex from the Night at the Museum movie and the totem statue as well. Such an incredible experience for our family! Thanks so much!!!

Enjoyed the museum and getting tickets ahead of time allowed us to skip the line. Although, there wasn’t any instructions between the free ticket (I.e. NY residents) and those who have to pay. We just got directed by the security guards outside.

Great museum! The exhibitions are made with great attention to detail and are accompanied with highly informative and interesting descriptions. Definitely a must to round off your NYC trip. The lines can be long but advance quickly. Best to buy your ticket online directly from the museum. Otherwise (if you buy it from a third party seller) you will have to change that voucher at a counter at the entrance of the museum, which will take more time.

I’m a native NYCer. I’ve been going here for a long, long time. I have a soft spot in my heart for it. I appreciate the museums drive to update-but it’s uneven. About 50% of the museum is still old age musty Roosevelt taxidermy and displays that haven’t been changed (and sometimes) cleaned in years. A lot of the native peoples/skeletons items are created representions and not original items. When something is updated it tends to get beat up real fast and is not maintained well (the beloved space center is showing its age). I really dislike that in order to access the “premium” exhibits you need to pay the full price ticket AND THEN pay extra for whatever premium exhibit you want to see (even if you’re a resident). If you can access the pay what you wish admission I still recommend a visit. It’s probably more enjoyable for adults who can slow down and absorb. Midweek when it’s quiet is best. I’d use the pay what you wish to just hang in the new section on a hot day. I don’t recommend taking small kids.. there isn’t enough for them to touch and do. If you do come with kids - come early. See one or two things they have an interest in. Hit the gift shop and then go across to Central Park.

Purchased tickets online to skip the queue. Admission plus 1 exhibit at $34 per person. Exhibit is time stamped. There are free museum tour inside. The museum is big but manageable with the map provided, even for first timer. I find that the app is not easy to use. The paper map is good enough. If you have ticketed exhibit, find out the exact location ahead of time, coz it may take you awhile to figure out exact location. Overall great experience.

So many incredible exhibits to experience, so little time! I highly recommend arriving as early as possible. The crowd really grew around 12:00pm. Hours of enjoyment that’s 100% worth every penny! I consider it a must-see when visiting NYC!

  • 5/5 Luvin M. 9 months ago on Google
Amazing museum. Highly recommended. Be ready to walk a lot, but every exhibit is worth your while. I read somewhere it took them 2 hours to complete… There’s no way you’ll finish every exhibit in less than 5 hours if you are taking your time. There’s parking on premises.

  • 3/5 Clayton C. 9 months ago on Google
Lots of interesting exhibits and things to see, from minerals & precious stones to dinosaurs & ancient animals; from space exploration to human history. Definitely something for everyone. The museum is getting older on the interior and starting to show its years, the flow between exhibits is difficult and often has to work our way back through an exhibit as there was no good way to get through. Overall great place to spend 4 hours

  • 5/5 Brittney M. 8 months ago on Google
While visiting NYC me and my husband decided to check out this museum. There is a significant amount of rich history here and it was very informative and interesting. I will say though considering how big the museum is I think it would be nice if a flow through the exhibits existed. The beverages were also a bit pricey, I had purchased water and it was about $5 per bottle. Aside from that I would definitely recommend for people to check this spot out.

I highly recommend visiting this place. The value of the ticket is well worth it because they have a wide range of exhibitions to offer. Be prepared to spend three to four hours exploring all four floors. I suggest downloading the map through their website, as it's easy to navigate, and also purchasing tickets in advance. There are two entrances: one on Central Park West and the other on W 81st St. If you can't purchase tickets online, you can go to the cashier, but it may take 5-15 minutes depending on the day. I noticed that weekdays (Monday to Thursday) are less crowded. I visited on a Wednesday during my trip, and it was a peaceful environment for taking photos. On Friday, it was super busy, with long lines at both entrances. We were fascinated by the exhibits in the Gems and Minerals, Human Origins, Insectarium, African Mammals, Dinosaurs, and Blue Whales halls. How was your experience?

  • 5/5 J 7 months ago on Google
Beautiful museum with tons of different exhibits, explorations, readings, and activities for all ages. Definitely recommend getting the extra tickets for the active experiences as they are fully immersive and enjoyed by all ages (especially couples!). You can access this museum directly from the subway station and there is a water bottle filling station in the lower level near the subway entrance bathrooms. Make sure to go back to the newer section of the museum to see a lot of in depth science exhibits and amazing architecture!

  • 5/5 Dany O. 7 months ago on Google
It’s by far my favorite place in the city. If you are interested in any subject such as space, animals, fossils, geology and anthropology then this is your spot. It gets a little crowded, so plan with good time and buy tickets online a couple of days before. You can mía e a quick tour of all 4 floors in 2 or 3 hours but you will be missing a lot of details so, if you want to see everything well, prepare at list 4 hours to check everything.

  • 5/5 Juraj P. 6 months ago on Google
The museum is a great place to spend a few hours or even days. We had access from a pass, so did not have to pay a separate fee, which was handy. We kind of just quickly went through everything we had access to, and it still took us about 3 hours. I'd imagine if you did want to learn and read about the various displays inside, you could easily spend several days coming back here. I didn't take many pictures as it felt more interesting to see things for myself, so I'd thoroughly recommend coming here.

We spent the entire day at the museum and still did not see everything. We had a great time. Unfortunately the Ocean area was closed which was #1 on my daughter’s list so that was disappointing; reptiles were also closed and much of the hands-on space things were broken. The cafes were very expensive. Theses are the things that made us choose 4/5. We prefer museums that have more hands-on but the admission price is less than others we have been to. It’s still a grand day out and a must-see for history buffs. We would have loved souvenirs that were themed from ‘night at the museum’. My 11yo said it would be fun to be able to buy Lego characters from the movie. We wished there was a hunt or checklist (there’s a web page with some suggested)…my daughter had fun searching but a paper version with everything would be cool. Would also be neat to be able to buy fun stickers or magnets based on Neil Degrasse Tyson sayings or memes. Buy tickets online and skip the big crowd. We also skipped special exhibits as we knew there wouldn’t be time for everything.

  • 3/5 Rosie L. 6 months ago on Google
I think this museum would be a lot better if it had more interactive exhibits because it has so many young visitors. Most of the exhibits are just objects you see or read about, nothing that you can really touch or play with. I think that the NY Hall of Science is way better when it comes to interactivity. I was hoping that AMNH would be more like the NY Hall of Science or the Deutches Museum in Munich, which are both way better when it comes to interactivity. There are also a lot of very old exhibits that are tucked away and don’t get much foot traffic that could definitely use some updating. The price was kinda insane but worth it since it’s a day pass, and I was able to re-enter the museum later on in the day. Annoyingly the pay what you want for NY residents doesn’t apply at all if you want a special ticket. For all the things I didn’t like, there’s a lot that was very enjoyable. The new Hall of Minerals was great, as was the new Gilder Center. The insect exhibit was very interesting and the vivarium was very fun and worth the extra cost in my opinion. It was cool to see the butterflies up close. Even though the dioramas are outdated, they are still definitely a classic hit. I think this is a cool place to check out and I would recommend it to tourists but it doesn’t quite capture me as much as it used to when I was a kid

I visited this museum while I was in New York and had a good time. There are a variety of exhibits, so you are sure to find something that you are interested in. I especially enjoyed the insect and gem exhibits. They also have a show at the planetarium, which is worth checking out. However, there were some issues getting into the museum. There was a very long line that wrapped around the building. It moved pretty slowly and took nearly an hour to get in. There was also another long line to get into the planetarium. Which caused some confusion due to the lack of organization.

This museum is very clean and organized. Went on a weekday and there were tons of kids everywhere so it must be a popular field trip spot. We went here hoping to see the giant dinosaur from Night at the Museum but you won’t find it because that movie was mainly filmed at another museum in Canada so that was a little disappointing. The ocean section of the museum was very cool, especially the huge whale. Fun place for kids, probably skip it if just a bunch of adults. We did not buy tickets ahead and didn’t have to wait at all.

Every year, this iconic museum gets better. Upgrades are more interactive, the movies are amazing and the theater in both the museum and planetarium are awesome. They new Gilder museum has a fabulous immersive experience called Invisible Worlds, that my 2 year old grandson really loved, and as members, we previewed the spectacular elephant exhibit which was full of info and fun exhibits. The museum has parking underneath, and a separate entrance for members, it has places to eat and you can pace the day beautifully. We traveled with my daughter, her toddler, my husband and me. Everyone was entertained, then a short visit to Central Park across the street, and some lunch nearby. A perfect day.

Scenes and exhibitions are so realistic that they look real, and it feels like being in the jungle or on the savannah. We had the chance to visit the museum as part of a guided tour in Italian. Our guide — a museum’s staff member named Karin — was so kind and clearly passionate about history that she involved us immediately. Really, really interesting. Totally recommend. I’d suggest to take at least half a day to visit since the museum is huge.
