I stayed in a private room for two nights and had a decent experience. It was clean, quiet, and easy to check in/out. The lounge and kitchen were nice. Location was great, walkable to Chelsea market, soho and Penn station. You definitely get what you pay for here. The place is unappealing in appearance and I sort of felt like I was staying at an orphanage. It would be nice if they cared a *little* about the aesthetic. Regardless, it was just fine for a place to sleep.

Very minimal accommodations, but I wouldn’t call it “bad” by any means! The hostel appears old and the staircases are a bit claustrophobic, especially with luggage. The room itself was pretty small but still very clean. Our beds and sheets were clean (a little uncomfortable to sleep on though), and our room came with a sink and mirror, shelves for our belongings, coat hooks, and a locker to store valuables in; hand soap and padlocks for the locker were not provided, but there are some pharmacies within walking distance if you forget to pack them. The communal bathroom and shower were also very clean, but I had some troubles with the water taking a while to heat up. There were no signs of bedbugs, roaches, or pests at all. The staff I met were all very polite and helpful, I didn’t meet a single employee with a bad attitude. The courtyard was well-kept and a good place to eat and socialize, as was the indoor dining room for the days it rained on my trip. As for safety, I felt very secure staying here. A police station is located just across the street, and the exterior entrances to the hostel are locked off to those who aren’t staying there. There was never a moment on my trip where I felt unsafe or worried. The hostel was also surprisingly quiet; I didn’t hear many other guests despite multiple student groups staying there, and I couldn’t even hear the loud music from a restaurant around the corner. In general, I’d recommend staying here as long as you’re not looking for 5-star luxury accommodations. If you’re in the market for basic housing or plan to be out and about for most of your trip, I’d recommend a stay here!

THEY TAKE CREDIT CARDS! Overall: 8/10 You get what you pay for, but in a GOOD way. If you’re like us and booked months in advance, just to read reviews and hour before check-in and freak out because tons of people say they don’t accept credit cards, they totally do. The room itself (2 bed) was small but comfy. The guy at the desk is very friendly and seems like a nice fellow to chat with. The beds, while slightly stiff, are still comfy. The bathroom, well it’s a bathroom. It works. The location is AMAZING. It’s a pretty homey feeling spot, right next door to a NYPD station, overall it’s a very nice spot for the price. Worth a stay.

The staff at the check in desk were super friendly and available 24/7! The hostel is in a great location, really useful for me to get around NYC for the first time. The free breakfast was good, a bagel and fruit, along with cereal and juice/coffee. The room was really clean, really good WiFi and AC. Absolutely no complaints for the price I paid! I would stay here again if I were to visit NY again.

Just what I needed! I saw a mouse but I mean this is also NYC. They had resident kitties who were on the prowl for the vermin. Loved the courtyard area. The lockers are not good if you have a large suitcase (they're small suitcase/backpack/carry on size). Great area right next to everything including a 10 minute walk to the subway. I'd return.

I had such a great time here! It was all clean and the staff was very friendly. It is perfectly located, in the heart of Manhattan. Once I left the hostel, got a coffee to go and was just walking around and there I was already next to the Empire State Building. I highly recommend this place! Next time I’m in New York, I’ll make sure to stay here again!

Chelsea International Hostel must be one of the largest hostels in New York City, and from my experience, it’s probably the nicest hostel in NYC. The location is great as it is not far from a couple of subway stations. Actually, I usually walk from Penn Station, which is where you arrive from one of the city’s three airports. There are some larger bunk rooms, but the majority of guest rooms are for four people, with restrooms and showers en suite. The breakfast area is both indoors and outdoors and breakfast is included in the room price. Besides having a great location, friendly ambience, and more than adequate amenities, Chelsea IH is great because of the varied types of people who stay here. It was great to be able to sit at the tables in the courtyard and meet loquacious, interesting international fellow world travelers.

Location is absolutely brilliant! Beds were a lot better than they initially seemed, we slept amazing all nights. Barely any city noise and super conveniently located! The low score is mainly down to the cockroaches in both the bedroom and bathroom. There weren't many and they weren't big, and they left quickly after turning on the light, but in my opinion should not be there.

First of all, they DO NOT take credit card, it's cash only with no heads up. Booked a queen bed with private bathroom and got a small full (my feet left the mattress and I'm 5'5") the room was clean enough, although a bug landed on my knee at night. There were some people outside drinking and smoking and it got a bit loud for a place that's supposedly smoke and alcohol free. Both untrue. And also, all the water controls are backwards so hot is cold and cold is hot.

Lazy, rude, careless stuff. I arrived the other night, a young boy with curly hair. He was high. He didn't give me any indication except which door is the room. Once I went, I discovered open windows and heat that burned my leg when I accidentally touched it. I walk back and request a room change. He gave me a key but didn't bother to tell me that the entire building had a heat valve problem and made me walk and discover myself. He was silent and none responding, I wasn't sure if he was deaf. If he was autistic I believe a note should have been put on the window, just to be aware. The shower 🚿 was dirty. Hair, on the ground and really not clean. Room as you see very small, just bad inside. It was really 🔥 not safe. Must sleep with open windows. I will say not safe.

Location is great. Service was nice, I asked for a room on the ground floor bc I had a lot of luggage and they gave it to me. They also have a cat! The rooms are kinda sad. There’s nowhere to put anything. No separation between beds, no shelves or tables. Someone has to sleep directly next to the AC so sucks for that person. It could easily be improved by a) using bunk beds or b) putting up shelves or tables next to each bed. Nowhere to hang up towels either. It’s literally a room with 4 beds that’s IT.

The stars reflect the fact that you get exactly what they offer, a cheap clean bed. No one ever promised comfort, quiet, or darkness. I did not sleep. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

+ price is reasonable + Location superb This is private property turn to be hostel, so do not expect elevator or big room. Suitable if you only carry backpack or cabin suitcase. Heater is on, hot water in bath room on, they have fridge (but not cool at all), microwave. Free coffee at morning. Storage for usd 5 per locker if you want keep your luggage but must bring your own padlock. Strictly check in at 3 pm and check out at 12.am

Would definitely not come back to this place but it was fine for the one night I stayed here. I had a private room but it was right next to the bathrooms so I heard doors slamming all night and people talking. Keep in mind there is NO AIR CONDITIONING and during May it was wildly hot in my room. I couldn’t leave the window open because the street noise was loud and I was on the first floor. Bathroom was very small and there was only one toilet and one shower shared between four rooms.

If there were a negative rating I would give this place that. The person who checked me in didn't bother to tell me the basics like where the bathroom or the kitchen was, unlike a friendly welcome at any other hostel I have had across the globe. If you land early, they are happy to take your dollars for storage but don't bother giving you good directions on simple things like where can you find water and bathroom. The rooms are like a jail cellar, small, suffocating. There is no ventilation. There is a constant chatter of people downstairs until late and nobody bothers to tell them to shut up. The building is old and floors are squeaky. Most single rooms are bear stairs and you will hear every move of people going in and out . I couldnt sleep the two nights I was there. The heat is on only late at night and because of zero ventilation you wake up in the morning drenched in sweat. Do yourself a favor, book an Airbnb instead especially as you can reach anywhere in NYC conveniently by subway.

If I could 0 stars I would. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I ever experienced. Boogers on the wall. Looks like a orphanage/ prison cell. Basic services are additional cost. Manager is extremely unprofessional. I left so upset. I was waiting to get picked up after staying at the hostel for 2 days and was told I needed to purchase a day pass for sitting in the lobby for an extra 20minutes pass the hour “grace period” Ridiculous. To add- I did not use any facilities during my stay there. I wanted to leave the day I arrived but already prepaid . The only day I used the facility was to sit in the lobby to wait to get picked up by my ride. Which if you stay for even just a few minutes after checkout they kick you out. And it’s not like they are busy or would be bothered by this. No other hostel is like this. Manager threaten to call security to help a 120pound professional women out. Seriously ? This is how you lose service. Horrible .

It was okay. The rooms were very bare and the doors could not be locked from the outside, making it impossible to leave anything of value inside unless you had a padlock and trusted the lockers in the room. The shower room and restroom were very bare too and could use maintenance. The hostel's location is very convenient and central.

A very nice -and affordable- option to stay in New York. Very well located, away from the “fuzz” of the city, in the residential neighborhood of Chelsea. 3 blocks away from a metro stop and 3 away from the High Line and Flat Iron. Breakfast is included, but it’s a very simple one: bagel, fruit (banana or apple), corn flakes, coffee and juice. But it is more than ok and enough to start the new york experience. The bathroom (in case of the private room I stayed in for two nights), is located in the corridor, toilet separated from the shower.

I stayed six nights in a basic single room and there was everything I needed.Single room is clean and cozy, inside there is a locker, a sink and some shelves.Very quiet hostel (yes you can sleep well in a hostel in NYC) in a very safe and strategical location. Very hot and clean shower (shared). Only three star because of the man whit glasses at the reception, who was a little rude.

You get what you pay for. Shared rooms, semi-clean bathroom and lowsy breakfast. But very convenient location in NYC, so very fine for a short stay if you want to save some money.

Stayed here a while ago. It's a very basic hostel with a basic breakfast and no decor or colour throughout the rooms. What made this a 1-star review is the fact that the toilet in my room was leaking into the bowl constantly throughout my week stay, meaning the toilet would make a loud sound to refill the tank every minute or so. making it hard to fall asleep for myself and roommates. What was infuriating was the staff refused to fix it despite signs throughout the building stating that leaks should be reported. I have fixed this issue in the past and know for a fact that the replacement part is ~$2 to buy at the store, requires no tools to install, and can be done in about 5 minutes. Would not recommend this place it is well past its heyday and the owners are obviously very cheap and do not care to fix even the most basic issues with the rooms.

Very comfortable place to stay on a budget in NYC (I opted for a private room). Free breakfast & nice interior patio area outdoors. Great place to meet other travelers & get ideas for the best things to do & places to go. I'm old enough to be the average guests parent, but was never made to feel uncomfortable. The facilities are old, but very clean. There is a communal kitchen & if you have food in the fridge you don't have to worry about it. Just be sure to label it. I've actually stayed here twice & will probably be back (unless I win the lottery & can afford a luxury hotel).

Location is this hostels greatest asset. It is close to the subway, and Chelsea is a great area to stay in. Beware that there are cockroaches! We had 1 large one in our room and many tiny scattering baby cockroaches in the bathroom! They require a passport to check in! This caused some problems during check in, but was ultimately resolved. Bring your passport! Room was tiny, bed linens were clean, and the room had its own A/C.

Stayed for two nights, clean, comfortable and very good price, i only used to sleep so it works, stayed in a 4 bed shared room and there was no problem, even one day I leave my locker the entire day (6am to 11 pm) with no padlock and open (my mistake) and when I comeback all my stuff was there, also you only shared the bathroom with your roomies, I will stay again the next time I visited NY

We stayed at the chelsea for a total of five nights on two seperate occasions. first time we were in room B1, ground floor, private room, double bed. room was basic but met our needs easily, having a sink. It was quite noisy at night until the adjacent kitchen was closed at midnight ,sometimes groups congregate here, whilst drinking alcohol, which can be annoying if you want to be early to sleep & early to rise. But we took ear plugs so we were prepared. The one thing we werent prepared for was the banging of the iron piping when the radiator came on. The radiators are the old cast iron type, and they were full of air, hence the banging which was LOUD. the heating system needs bleeding of air. having said that, the banging stopped after 5 minutes, and the air in the pipes didnt affect the warmth coming from the radiator as it was tropical in the bedroom! so much so, we HAD to sleep with the window open. Not a problem as west 20th st was a lot quieter than I expected it to be. bathroom and kitchen were both clean & coffee was available and they do free pizza on wednesdays. the second room was on the 3rd floor , E11, no heating noise here and not much noise from the adjacent rooms. the downside is you have 2 flights of stairs to negotiate. All in all this hostel is not without its flaws, but given the price, I think its a fair deal and would stay here again.

You definitely get the value that you pay for. You are essentially paying for a clean bed and access to a bathroom. Don't expect much more than that. The bed sheets are minimalist and the heaters work well but make lots of noise. Definitely a decent option for a restrained budget.

The hostel is good and well-located. Unfortunately we visited NY for new year and it was freezing. The heater would turn off in the middle of the night, we would wake up freezing, I would send an email to the hostel and they would respond the heating system turns on and off automatically (it was 20 degrees F outside). You could feel the freezing wind by standing next to the window. We left the hostel sick, my husband with angina. After several complaints, they gave us a partial refund. The staff is nice and available 24/7

Great stay for the price! Very clean, safe neighborhood (the hostel is across the street from a police station), and easily accessible staff. Only reason it’s not a 5 is because it would be nice to have more amenities (hand soap or towels in the bathroom for example), or sound proofing - but you definitely get what you pay for!

Our organization flew to NYC to present at the Commission on the Status of Women and decided to stay at the Chelsea International the location of course is awesome. Mostly I decided to write this review to compliment the great staff. From the service at the front desk to the honest room staff and on to the staff making sure that all the common areas were clean THANK YOU. They did a great job welcoming us. An example: We were sitting in the courtyard after hours and a staff person appeared to inform us that the courtyard was closed, he was so polite in asking us to leave. We didn't get his name but our THANKS go out to him, the desk clerk and to the room staff who found my black hand bag I left behind. GRACIAS! We will return and recommend Chelsea International to other folks. GOOD JOB TEAM!!!

I travel alot the best hostel ever. My room was so clean you could eat of the floor. Walking bare feet and my feet were clean. The front desk was helpful about activities in the area. Very safe inside and a nice block with the NEW YORK CITY 10 district police station down the street. Larry the General manager was very comterble to be around. Just a great experience.

OLD OLD building. My keys can barely get the doors open. No elevator and the stairs have tiny steps. The bathroom itself doesn’t have a sink…it’s in your room so I have to wrestle with the doorknob with dirty hands and it is just nasty. The check in desk is this cramped area where only one person can fit. The common areas are the bare minimum, run down and old. I would not spend any time relaxing in them. My mattress is cheap and the frame creaks. There is a single bathroom and shower for my floor. I was staying at HI NYC before this and WHY did I think a location change would be good?? I would never stay here again. Do not recommend.

One of the most affordable hostels in a prime location that offers excellent value for money. Can't complain about the room for the price; it was small but we had a private bathroom and could just about fit all the luggage inside. What was problematic though... The stairs. Beware if you have hefty suitcases you may have to carry them up 3 flights of stairs. There's a kitchen and a lounge which is especially useful as check in is only at 3pm. Was disappointed by the fact that I *had to pay in cash* and this was not mentioned prior to arrival. Keep that in mind but overall just a few minor inconveniences that are not unlike other hostels; though worth it for the location and for the price.

In the context that this is a hostel and is significantly cheaper than the next category. (And you pay for what you get). Was an excellent experience. Check in and out was super smooth and good email communication prior, used my credit card with no issues. My private room had a lockable door to the hallway, high school style lockers for important stuff, a single bed, a vanity mirror with drinking water and storage shelves. the floor and bedding was super clean and saw the cleaners regular clean the common areas. The common shower room and toilet was clean and wasn’t shared between too many people. FYI you can borrow a hair dryer from the front desk. But you must bring your own toiletries (including hand soap). As others have said, not at all wheelchair accessible, every room will have stairs either up or down to access them. Wouldn’t recommend big suitcases, just small hand held luggage and backpacks. Location is superb, trains close by and food around.

Worst hostel ever over our ten days. Dirty rooms , floors and common areas and rats and cockroaches every night. Rude staff threatened to kick my friend and I out for “bringing in food” as I asked for more sheets as my friend was sick- and they accused me of breaking rules (we didn’t bring in food only water). They would not give us the new sheets even on our long stay. Free breakfast was also falsely advertised as it wasn’t available. Do not stay here under any circumstances, much better options around.

Good hostel located between 7th and 8th avenue, it is worth in quality-price terms taking into account I paid for a shared bedroom with only 2 beds and I ended up sleeping alone so it was like a private room. There are several rooms in different houses and different floors. The only bad parts of the hostel is that there were music late in the afternoon played by some guests and in the morning while having breakfast the cleaning lady was a bit annoying because she made me stand up and move place while I was eating. A part from that the rest was nice and I should repeat sleeping spot if I come back to the city in the near future. I don't think there is any other option in Manhattan with this budget. Pd : they have a good kitchen with coffee facilities and there is a bathroom and a separate shower in every floor. There is a lot of stairs if you want to get fit.

First of all the older man from the reception is terrible (I think he is the owner), all guests that I had contact complained about him, he should get retired, just a suggestion… he treated all guests bad, he doesn’t know how to be a good receptionist! We are paying a lot for having a minimum decent reception. The hostel as you can imagine is old and they don’t invest money on it, they have only essential things. The room was too hot because the heating was on all night. They don’t have any activity to the guests meet each other as I experienced before in other hostels. They should go to Europe and learn how to have better hostel. I paid the highest price for a hostel and it wasn’t good experience at all!

Stayed in a single private room with shared bathroom/toilet for 9 days. To my surprise it was really clean! And yes, this is a basic hostel. You need to understand that before making any booking. No amenities ie soap, shampoo but they do supply towels, linen etc. Bed was comfortable but thin pillow. you could ask for an extra one if needed. They provide coffee everyday, kitchen areas are always spotless. Royce and Rafi were friendly and approachable. You cant open the window but it equipped with an AC unit. My only complaint- the main door slams really loud when people in and out. My room was above the reception and nothing much you can do about it. In fact, i was offered to a different room in another building. Overall, highly recommend and cheap for NYC.

The hostel is ok. I booked twice as I arrived 1 day earlier than the expected. The shared room was ok but it had mold in the toilet (which is kinda gross). The rest of the stay I was in a single room which was definitely ok for the price. The best part is definitely the location. It was outrageous the fact that I had to pay 5 dollars to store my bag between the two stays (check out at 12 and check in at 4pm of the same day). I made it notice it to them and they answered very rudely as if they were doing me a favor to make me pay just 5 dollars.

This has been a great hostel. Its reasonably priced and within walking distance to a lot of things and two train stops. The rooms and shared bathrooms are very clean. you have to bring your own everything, including hand soap, but they do provide toilet paper. I heard there was a shared kitchen but didn't check it out. There's quite a bit of street noise as well as noise from the other rooms. There's hardly anything in the rooms, just a bed and two chairs but what else do you need.It was a little confusing finding the front desk, its the door to the left of the branded awning and there's a sign on the door that says Front Desk.

This was a wonderful experience in New York City. In a comfortable and safe feeling neighborhood, with police station across the street and great places to eat nearby. The only complaint is how the front door slams shut on its own, so people coming and going throughout the night were not courteous in shutting the door. They also were very noisy in getting settled. I will still go back because the price point was worth it for our location relative to all the things we wanted to do in NYC!

Room was okay, but smaller than expected. When you have to share with a roommate, hope you don't care about intimacy. Facilities were clean, there is a kitchen for fresh coffee and tea in the morning. There is a fridge as well to store your food. Staff was very nice ! Location awesome!

I mean this place is alright. It just doesn’t feel like a normal hostel. I spent two days there and didn’t see anyone else! So there’s no common areas for people to hangout and get to know each other. Facilities wise everything is fine, rooms are ok, bathroom and showers are super small but clean and decent. It just lacked that hostel atmosphere and at $40usd per night it isn’t super cheap.

This hostel was exactly what we were looking for in a place to stay. The price is INCREDIBLE for New York, the area was lovely and quiet and felt very safe. It was very very clean, something I hadn't really expected. They had people come in and clean the shared bathrooms every day and take out the trash - I was really impressed with their thoroughness. We found a great little diner less than 5 minutes from the hostel called The Dish - highly recommend a visit! And it wasn't far from the subway or Chelsea Market, where we spent the morning one day. We will definitely spend future visits in NYC staying at the Chelsea Int'l Hostel.

(Translated by Google) Hostel well located in the Chelsea area. You can get there by metro from the airport (line E and jamaïca for the airtrain: faster than the Howard beach line A) without having to change. Breakfast is included (1 bagel butter and jam + 1 piece of fruit) unlimited coffee and tea, milk and basic cereals). The interior of the hotel is quite old but cleaning is done every day. There is 1 courtyard accessible until a certain time (10 p.m.) so as not to disturb customers. Wifi is available. It is possible to leave your luggage in 1 locker if your flight is later than check out ($ 5 the largest). For 1 hostel in this area the value for money is quite correct knowing that there is 1 breakfast included. I have been there several times and have never been disappointed. Better to take 1 room with private shower for a few euros more.

I've had nothing but great experiences while staying at Chelsea International Hostel. It is usually my preferred accommodation while visiting New York because of the its reasonable rates, ample breakfast, and great traveler ambiance. It located convenient to the subway system, as I typically arrive at Penn Station and then just walk from there. The rooms can be a small bedroom-sized space with 2 bunk beds (4 person) to larger rooms with either 4, 6, or 8 people.

Overall 3.5 stars Location: 5 stars, most of midtown and downtown Manhattan can be reached by foot and 3 subway stations close. Lots of food stores and takeouts close by too Price: 5 stars, pretty much the cheapest place to stay Cleanliness: 3.5, it's a bit run down, peeling wall paper etc but the bedsheets and pillow were clean which is what's important for me. You can also swap your sheets and pillow for clean ones whenever you want after you uses them. Other comments: free brekfast is nice, very friendly staff and maids. My radiator was broke in my room and was constantly on full blast so it was very hot all the time. I had to have my window always open which made it very loud since it was by the main road. I'm sure it was just a problem with my room though. It was recommended to put valuables in lockers even in a private room which was a red flag since the only other people in there should be house cleaning. I left some valuables outside my locker throughout the trip and nothing happened to them so ill give them the benefit of the doubt. Overall, if the radiator problem was fixed I would definitely recommend this to any travellers and backpackers on a budget for sure 👍

(Translated by Google) A little mixed opinion on this hostel. I really liked the space in the backyard and the bedrooms were ok. But I have several negative points. Already, when I arrived, the reception took more than 20 minutes to pick me up when there was no one there. Then the staff would have to agree on the internal rules of the hostel, some people working there told us that it was allowed to drink alcohol and stay the night in the backyard, and another nobody yelled at us 1 hour later because we were drinking a beer and asked us to free the yard. Find an agreement. Then having to pay a fortune to leave your suitcase in a locker on the last day is blah too. And last point, change your locks, 80% of the time someone had to be in the room to open us so badly the lock was screwed up.

Good location. The building and staff are very old. So don't expect fun here. It's actually got a creepy catholic school vibe even though there is no obvious religious iconography. The showers are cold in the shared bathrooms. Random older people watching old TV shows. But again, good location so you don't have to spend much time here..which I think is the whole point of the business. Pay and get out BUT at 12pm "Because we're cool in The Chelsea." Just a place in a pinch.

  • 3/5 Eva S. 2 years ago on Google
I'd say a bit below average. The place seemed pretty expensive to me for it's overall quality, but of course I'm not very familiar with prices in NY so maybe that's just how things are. My room was facing the street, and the blinds wouldn't close completely, so I felt a bit exposed as people could literally look into my room if they tried. Of course, the police station was right across the street, so I felt pretty safe. I guess for a pretty short stay, one or two nights, it's okay. Also, I had a huge suitcase, and there's no elevator. Thankfully I was on the first floor so I didn't have to go up many stairs. The place didn't feel that clean, as the building was old, and the staff was okay, some better than others. Overall, I think I'd try out some other places, before returning to this one.

    1. staff : the old man was very rude and not kind. He makes the first image of hostel terrible. He even shouted to me. The hostel owner should fire him or teach him the manner of staff. I was very angry with his attitude toward the guest. 2. the locker : the hostel has locker in basement but you should pay 5 bucks and carry your own padlock. or not, you should buy padlock for 10 bucks. they are too stingy. 3. the blanket : New York's winter is very very cold. But you should sleep with very thin blanket and sheet. It was very unreasonable factor in cold winter. they are not interested about your bedding. 4. the shower room : the shower room has bad condition. so the water is not enough for you to wash your hair. the water amount is too small to wash your hair. This hostel has the only thing is location. And others are terrible.

  • 5/5 Joseph F. 2 years ago on Google
Most of the rooms you're guaranteed it will be quiet at night because most of them face the courtyard, not the street. Also, a police precinct is literally across the street, so you'll feel safe. Comfortable clean beds.

  • 4/5 Scott K. 2 years ago on Google
I found the rooms to be clean and the staff friendly and present, if less involved than at some other hostels. There isn't the strong social atmosphere that exists at some others. But for a cheap and worry free place to stay in an excellent location, it's very hard to beat. One cannot expect an exultant breakfast but that is also weaker compared to some other hostels at similar price points and at similarly prime locations. I've stayed at hostels, on couches, and luxury hotels or boutiques, depending on the circumstances. I'd stay here again.

The location has fantastic! Good price. Stayed in a 2-bed men's room and my roommate was awesome! Despite his only speaking Russian, Google Translate helps a great deal! A+ I plan on staying in that same formation again weekly as I frequently travel to NYC as I plan on moving here soon.

The bed were not comfortable at all, every time we moved on the mattress it made a lot of noise and it sinked in. There was noise late at night and at 6:30am. The body towels were small, there were no hand towel or floor towels to use after shower (what makes the room wet). Only one outlet in a bedroom for 2 people. No a/c or heat.

  • 1/5 Angela W. 2 years ago on Google
I've stayed in hostels before so I understand they are small, and loud and mostly just an inexpensive place to sleep. This place is awful. Staff didn't even make eye contact when I checked in. The beds are ridiculously uncomfortable. My whole body hurts from 2 nights in these awful beds. Words cannot convey how uncomfortable they are. I would rather have slept on the floor, but it's crooked. The mattresses visibly sag and the beds squeak very loud every single time you move. It's very loud here. There is some loud awful banging that happens randomly throughout the night. And then starting around 7 it gets even louder and is hourly. I am exhausted. And not in a fun, I'm in NYC kind of tired. Seriously, don't stay here. There are many other options and I wouldn't stay here again unless it were free.

Good area for cooking, socialising and tv’s in all of the common rooms. The room (I stayed in a 4 person room) was clean and had a bathroom to itself, which was spacious, the room had a locker for each person. The staff were polite but strict on when to leave the common areas (which close at 11pm which was fair). I had a good stay, a great place for if you’re looking to meet people and travel around the city with a safe space to leave your belongings. Make sure you get a lock for the locker - got one for $3 from target 10 mins away. Can imagine it would be great in summer 😊

  • 3/5 Daniel Zoltan A. 1 year ago on Google
Relatively clean, but tiny rooms. No bedbugs or roaches, so that’s a plus, but a duvet cover wouldn’t be too crazy to be included. New York accomodation prices are insane, so compared to that this place is good value, even if you would be able to stay in a 4/5 star hotel in most parts of the world from the same budget. It would make the experience better if after paying hundreds for a room they would include a lock for the lockers (of course you can buy one for 10$ over the addtional 5$ for using the locker).

Remember to use ʜoᴛᴇʟʙoʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏm when booking your room. This site will compare thousands of hotel sites and usually will have rooms a lot cheaper than others! Thank me later! This hotel is the best rated in the area. I've been staying here for a very long time. If you decide to stay here you for sure won't be let down.

You get what you pay! The rooms are clean, an A/C is installed and the shared bathroom is at least cleaned daily and never was dirty. Only the man on the counter while checking out was a bit harsh, but as the man at check-in was super polite, I'd see over it. Over all a very nice location if you only plan to sleep in your room as the location is superb and you can travel across new York very easily.

The place was alright if you are looking for somewhere to stay for a night or two. No hot water in the shower on a regular basis, no temperature controls which meant it was always hot and uncomfortable in the room and a police officer from the nearby precinct informed me never to leave valuables in the room as theft was regularly reported from those staying at the hostel. This place is not to bad for distance from sites and subways if you are someone who doesn’t mind walking a distance however if you want somewhere that is more convenient then you should look elsewhere. Overall it is cheap and you get what you pay for but if you are mindful then it may be a perfect for you

Good value for money Rooms leave a little to be desired but for the price what can you expect. The common areas where clean although we really didn't use them. The air con is configurable which is nice. The area had good connections which is what we really cared about.

  • 3/5 Nicole G. 1 year ago on Google
This place is cheap (well NYC cheap) for a reason. The rooms are tiny and the building is old and not updated. So, no elevator, don't bring a large bag, and be prepared for the locks to stick. The water temperature in the shared shower was wild, it seemed to be whatever it wanted no matter which way I turned the knob. They do provide linens and a towel (a plus for a hostel) and things were pretty clean. But when they say they don't provide toiletries boy do they mean it because there isn't even soap to wash your hands in the restrooms. I wouldn't stay for the full 14 days they allow, but it was fine for the two nights I needed so i could go to a wedding.

Stayed here many times since 2012, then they didn't (yet) accept cards. Always found clean rooms, simple breakfast, good wifi connection and respectful travellers. There are special pizza nights and in-house events, but this isn't a party spot (for those down-rating it: go find a party outside). The luggage lockers downstairs are great.

Fine hostel in good area. The HI one is better but it’s further from where I needed to be. This hostel is really old and the restroom situation on each floor needs to be improved. The bed I slept on was messed up and leaning in a weird way too. The outlets weren’t great either

Value for money isn't the best I've seen but is ok. Good location (across from police station) but both the clerks I met at the reception during my three days weren't nice. First was downright unfriendly and the second wouldn't let me use their phone for one phone call to Delta because my flight was cancelled the day of departure... Showers aren't really clean, bring flip flops and your own soap.

Stayed at Chelsea International Hostel for a week while looking for permanent accommodation as I'm from Europe and honestly didn't expect much but it was exactly what I needed: Basic necessities and clean, surprisingly quiet rooms at an affordable price. Both members of staff I saw while I was there were very friendly. The manager is a gruff sort of fellow but with very good humour and a kind heart. Check in is at 15:00 not before and checkout is any when (like literally any when) before 11. Every person who took the other bed in my room while I was there was super interesting to talk to but didn't hinder privacy when it was needed. There are nicer places to stay if you're looking for a holiday but for backpacking or bridging an accommodation gap it is an absolute go-to.

The hostel was fine for a few nights. Yeah the rooms are small but why come to New York and just sit in your room. The staff were friendly. Yeah the bathrooms are small but it's an old building. The location was key and the price was all good

Our first room had a roach. There was no Air Conditioning. Getting in the room with the keys were a hassle. The 2nd room was a lot better but our door knob would not lock if we tried to lock it from the outside. No issues with staff & service, they were very friendly. Great location with plenty food options & easy subway access.

The stay here was great. I was skeptical before arriving due to the reviews but we absolutely loved everything there. The facilities are simple and the rooms are a bit small but you can't beat the price and location. Anything else remotely close to this location is at least 3 or 4 times the amount. I didn't interact with the front desk besides the night shift. The guy on Friday night was very friendly. They have rental lockers but you have to pay $5 for them. All and all, this was a great experience. Just read their confirmation email and there will be no surprises. Can't wait to come back for the holidays!

  • 2/5 Catherine R. 10 months ago on Google
My experience staying here was not pleasant. I stayed in a private room for 2 nights. I went out early and came back late to spend as little time as possible in the hostel. The only good thing was the location. I arrived and had to pay $5 to store my luggage in a locker and $10 for a lock. When I checked in, the lock on my room wouldn't open. I spoke to reception and they gave me a new room. The stairs are very steep and narrow. The room is very bare and shabby. The walls and doors are very thin, lots of noise from outside and inside the building. I went for a shower and there was no hot water. I spoke to reception and the maintenance guy sorted it quickly. The room is cheap for the location but objectively was a lot of money for such a low quality room. The view out of my window was literally a mountain of garbage bags so I kept the blinds closed the entire time. The WiFi only worked 50% of the time. When I checked out I had to pay another $5 to store my luggage. I had no issues with any of the staff. I think they could invest in some basic upgrades and renovation, it would improve the customer experience.

You get what you pay for, and for the money they were fine. Just don’t expect the Waldorf-Astoria. People have said the beds are uncomfortable, but I slept well and have a bad back. My only issue is I was traveling by Amtrak on a multi-city tour, and it looked like I might miss a connection in Chicago the day before. To see if it would be less costly to delay my itinerary by a day or to catch a flight to get caught up, I emailed them to explain the situation. I asked if they had availability for the day after and how much more it would cost. The reply was they cannot accept cancellations on the day of the booking. I replied that was fine, but didn’t really answer my question. I’d know by 11pm the day before if I’d make the connection or not, so I’d be able to let them know in time if I needed to change, just needed to confirm they weren’t already booked and what the price difference might be. The reply back was they never said I could contact them at 11pm to make a change; they needed to know by 10pm. They claimed they couldn’t tell me if the rate would be different on the new day, nor did they ever tell me with certainty that (at least as of that moment) they were booked up or not. They suggested I contact them when I had made a decision on what I wanted to do. I told them my decision was going to be based, in part, on the answers to my questions, asked them once more for answers— essentially, I was asking, “If, right now, I was to book with you the day after my planned stay, could I, and how much would it cost?” I never heard back. Fortunately, I made my connection in Chicago with 32 minutes to spare, but I wasted a good half-hour trying to get r he answers to my questions.

I had a rather good experience for what it is, a hostel with my own room & bed - it came with a sink, mirror, locker, towel (you can get new ones too with no extra charge), lots of storage spaces, room was a good size, both shared bathroom(good shower pressure with hot water) and toilet and common areas were cleaned everyday. I had a big window over looking the back which was quiet considering that it's an inner city living. People at the front desk were all nice and did their job well. The only down side was the cleaning lady insisted that I leave (before check out time, around 10:45am) twice...I was working on my computer in the room at the time. I told her to give me 15mins but she kept returning to ask me to leave. Yes a hostel can be noisy, young ones come back late and run up and down the stairs, people slamming instead of closing their doors etc,. Whats new?! Always bring your ear plugs with you if you're staying at a hostel.

  • 1/5 Jane K. 5 months ago on Google
Absolutely insane. The common area closes at 11pm, which means you can't get your food out of the fridge after 11pm. You also can't have food in your room, which means you essentially can't eat after 11pm. I felt like I was in a juvenile delinquency center. Clearly I'm here because I can't afford to eat out every night. Then the guy with glasses starts threatening us, telling us our room is getting multiple complaints for being too loud? Nobody complained. I've spoken to almost every other guest in our unit to ensure that our volume was appropriate. I think he was lying to scare us. Ok Nanny McPhee. Then he tells me that there's a fee for bringing food into the room and that the "cameras" can see when we're eating, which is pretty bizarre considering, 1. I wasn't even bringing in food, 2. It doesn't state on their website that there's even a fee for that, and 3. How would the cameras see anyone eating in their room? If there are cameras in the room, that is a violation of privacy laws and can even be illegal. Is he insisting that he can see us in our most private and vulnerable moments? I was incredibly uncomfortable for the remainder of the stay. Not to mention the bugs in the shower. Our shower was filled with gnats. I felt sick, I was too horrified to shower my first night here.

If you just want a (kinda) cheap place to take a shower and crash, this hostel will do. It's seated in a good location, near several sightseeings, nothing to complain about that. The only problem is the recepcionist, I think his name is Larry, an old dude who is very rude and acts like we've been owing a favor for years, haha. Extremely rude and not prepared to receive turists. He must be the owner because he really doesn't care if he's mistreating you in front of others.

  • 1/5 Tom A. 6 months ago on Google
There is no value for money at this place. Bring earplugs! The walls are just for show and you hear everything, if there is rain you feel like you are in a tin can... The bathroom door couldn't close in our room so the maintenance shaved it and left the wood chips on the floor. Chase the cleaning staff for what you want (only in Spanish) because the reception won't help you with basic stuff... The windows are bolted and can't be open and the AC is unreasonably loud. Do yourself a favour and stay away. It's not worth it.

  • 1/5 Avery F. 4 months ago on Google
The guy at the front desk, Rafael, is HORRIBLE. Seemed to get angry and abrasive at the simple fact that I was a living breathing human being. Very uncomfortable experience and I began to feel unsafe staying there. Luckily I was only there two nights. Reading back previous reviews, he and his problems have been mentioned numerous times and I’m shocked he still works there. Apparently even the police are familiar with him. I wonder if he’s related to the owner. My advice: stay someplace else, don’t take the risk that you might catch this guy at the wrong time. It’s too bad, because while the hostel was very basic, I found it otherwise an okay place to stay.

  • 2/5 Facundo R. 6 months ago on Google
We had the worst possible treatment ever in a hostel from the concierges. We were threatened to be kicked out when we rented a locker to leave our luggage on the last day if we “asked questions”. Besides, we were also threatened to be kicked out because another group, not ours, was smoking where they were not supposed to. Leaving that aside, the only positive point is tidiness, which is thanks to the kind cleaning personnel. Overpriced even for Manhattan and they definitely don’t know how to treat customers. I would not recommend it for more than two nights.
