There is planet named after this Greek god who according to mythology, was half man and half giant. All the modern day monsterous superheroes Hulk, Hercules, Goliath etc were Greek titans who fought with each other. After losing a battle, Atlas carried the world on his shoulders as a punishment. And to enhance his eternal condemnation even further, they put his sculpture outside in cold, sunshine and rain where he is to pose and smile for every passer by.

Bronze statue created in 1937 around Rockefeller Plaza in Midtown Manhattan, NYC. It is across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral. The sculpture depicts the ancient Greek Titan Atlas holding the heavens on his shoulders. The spot is nice, not too much or attraction from tourist because they are probably excited about more standout spot around the area.

In front of Rockefeller Center, along 5th Avenue, is the famous bronze sculpture of Atlas. Atlas holds the Earth on his back. If you look closely, you can see the symbols of the signs and planets.

630 Fifth Avenue, NY, Manhattan NY Main entrance forecourt What3Words ///poems.limit.stove https://w3w.co/poems.limit.stove 40.758961, -73.977190 40°45'32.2596"N, 73°58'37.8840"W 40°45.53766'N, 73°58.6314'W Atlas is a successful collaboration between two talented artists, Lee Lawrie, who conceived the idea and designed the figure, and Rene Chambellan, who modeled the heroic-sized statue from his sketch. A famous figure from Greek mythology, Atlas was a half-man, half-god giant known as a Titan, who helped lead a war against the Olympic gods. After the Titans’ defeat, Atlas was condemned to carry the world on his shoulders as punishment. Atlas is one of Rockefeller Center’s greatest and largest Art Deco icons and has even been used on U.S. postage stamps. The figure of Atlas in the sculpture is 15 feet (4.6 m) tall, while the entire statue is 45 feet (14 m) tall. Atlas weighs 14,000 pounds (6,400 kg) and is the largest sculpture at Rockefeller Center.

The detail on this statue is astounding! Very appropriate detailing for the character of Atlas and his job. It might trigger megalophobia if you have problems with that sort of thing. Potted plants surround the statue and there was some trash here and there but it wasn't distracting enough for me to really mind. There wasn't that many people crowding around the statue compared to other NY attractions either, so that was nice. Visited in 2014.

This is a beautiful statue of Atlas! Don’t overlook it when exploring Rockefeller Center!

This giant statue of Atlas is located right outside the entrance to 45 Rockefeller Plaza and across from the St. Patrick's cathedral. This iconic statue is often missed because people are too distracted by all the attractions near 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Also, the area is not particularly well lit at night, so taking night portrait photos with the statue can be difficult. There is a very interesting replica of this statue inside the Lego store in 30 Rockefeller Plaza that somehow people have posted for this listing. The actual statue is obviously made from Bronze and not brown Lego bricks...

If there’s one thing that’ll give you a dose of “I’m in New York City” vibes, it’s the Atlas Statue on 5th Avenue! This guy’s biceps could probably bench-press a small car, and he’s holding up the weight of the world like it’s no big deal. I’m not saying you’ll get superhuman strength from looking at it, but you might just feel a bit more empowered. It’s like the city saying, “You got this!” as you stroll by. So, whether you’re a local or a tourist, swing by, snap a pic, and soak in some of that NYC resilience. Atlas has your back… quite literally! Pro Tip: Flex your own muscles and see if you can strike a pose as epic as his!

The immense bronze Atlas statue, made in 1937 by Lee Lawrie, acts as a grand gesture of New Yorkers to welcoming visitors to the International Building’s Rockefeller Center area. The statue is centrally located in Manhattan, just off Fifth Avenue and across the street from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Due to television publicity, such as recent appearances on the TV show 30 Rock, it has become just one of many famous NYC icons. This statue was modeled after the Farnese Atlas, a second-century Hellenistic sculpture representing Ancient Greek Titan holding the spheres of heavens. This is a great stop for those taking a walking tour of the city. * I recommend hitching an elevator ride to the Top of the Rock where you can enjoy panoramic, practically unobstructed, views of New York City. You can stay for a while and walk around the few deck levels with benches on the lower level or explore the gift shop. The views from the Top of the Rock are incredible with glass windows to look through, unlike the Empire State Building where the views are obstructed by chain link fences.

Eine sehr schöne Statue des Titanen Atlas, der zur Strafe den Himmel tragen muss. Wenn man genau hinsieht, kann man die Symbole der Sternzeichen und der Planeten entdecken.

Gorgeous, iconic, landmark of strength & perseverance. He personifies strength and endurance — built during the trying times of the Great Depression. The massive 15 feet-tall Art Deco figure of “Atlas” made out of bronze matches the architectural style of the Rockefeller Center.

Beautiful statue of Atlas, carrying the celestial world over his shoulders, is a fine art piece exactly opposite to St. Patrick's Cathedral (because of which, I believe, few tourists cross it without noticing). It's little cramped up place to click pics but I got it after a few mins wait.

It’s a great monument, behind the Atlas you may take the best pictures of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
