I'm very suspicious of all the allegedly real 5 star reviews. I understand why some think it should shut down, allowing vets to go to local hospitals that can provide what veterans need. Med students are the focus for the VA now in NYC. They don't seem to be paying attention to the veterans anymore.

The nurse that brought me to the room complained the entire time about how long she worked there and how she couldn’t wait to retire. The staff walked the halls talking about patients that they disliked. No one ever responded to my call bell. I was there for almost a week. My bathroom wasn’t cleaned when I arrived and no one cleaned it until day three. I’m diabetic but every day they served me pancakes or waffles for breakfast. I didn’t see the dietitian until the day I was leaving. I’m not even going to talk about the occurrences after my surgery but let’s just say that this place is a nightmare!!!!! I give them a zero out of a hundred

The VA Hospital becoming a mess it's more of a school than a hospital to help veterans I do not recommend that you go to the VA Hospital anymore if you have the coverage try and go someplace else these hospitals are not hospitals they are schools and we are being trained on

I nearly died and they covered everything up. Even years later there’s no trace of my exam images or documents. They pretended that it never happened to cover up all the times I complained about symptoms before being diagnosed and treated at another hospital. I went to another hospital out of desperation. I didn’t think I was going to make it. The doctors there said I saved my own life by discharging from the VA Manhattan. Glory to God!

Have never been here without a problem/mishap. Always come for an appointment and seen an hour later. Today they lost my labs. Employees are constantly just hanging out talking. I’m not a retired veteran, I work. So to waste a whole day means I am not getting paid.

It’s the VA. Nothing changes. Same old. Don’t expect to be seem at the time of your appointment. Don’t expect good service either. Get private insurance. You’re better off. Workers to include doctors aren’t held accountable. Nobody cares.

The securities need to be retrained. The security at the front desk asked me if they could see my ID (they were just hanging out in the lobby area). I showed them my state ID that clearly says I am a Veteran. Then they go "That means nothing. You are not a veteran and you need to get out." Just because I am a female/Asian, that does NOT mean that I didn't serve my country. When I argued that I haven't received my VA ID card in mail yet, they still tried to kicked me out. Apparently they are NOT trained properly to guard this facility. Very unprofessional! Otherwise I am satisfied with the medical care I received.

I have never seen a veteran receive medical treatment at this facility. Instead, the NYU medical students who are responsible for treating veterans at the Manhattan VA, keep their patients sedated on dangerous prescription drugs. This facility directly supports the 22 veteran-deaths that take place every day.

NYU medical students using veterans as guinea pigs for prescription drug testing. Then they wonder why there's an opioid epidemic.

Major Surgery total knee replacement was Thursday March 7, 2019 released Friday March 8 2019. Now here is my one night horror story You can’t make this stuff up operation went well actually walked the hallway with a walker 3 hours after recovery. Staff was great up until the night shift A male nurse by the name of Noel complained all night about not having enough staff whenever I had needs he had a real attitude problem. He had to reset my IV machine around 10 times he told me the last time that his patience was at a breaking point. He blamed the dayshift for not putting the IV in properly and he basically reset it complaining the whole time. I take 19 medications a day my medications were not here thank God I bought my own. Around 12:45 AM I had to go to the bathroom. He had an attitude problem on unhooking me from my IV machine and the vibration mattress. I asked him if he could clean the toilet seat because the janitor all night kept using it from an adjacent room and he urinated on it. After it was finished a nurse was standing in the hallway she did not budge so I told her I do it myself. Then for 20 minutes afraid to contact the nurses station with the IV machine beeping I finally did and Noel told me he had an emergency he couldn’t get to me. I heard him say in the background that the IV machine was a waste I didn’t need the IV it’s fighting infection really? Finally I told him I could do without the attitude and the complaining about being understaffed and he said well I I have been attentive to your needs all night seriously? Then he said if I want to make a complaint it would be good because then The hospital would do something about him being understaffed. I was supposed to get Ice on my knee every 20 minutes good luck with that. Because of the progress that I made with walking Dr at 7 o’clock pm told me if I want to go home the next day. I was thinking Saturday so I can get one good day and for physical therapy but after that first night tonight Fugetaboutit.

This hospital is the worst. My grandfather went there for surgery and passed 9 days later. The doctor, surgeon, nor anyone else could tell me precisely what happened and why. All they knew was he died. It took a nurse who was not on duty at the time of his death to check the medical records and tell me what happened before and after he passed. 11 + years later and I still don't know how he passed. I loathe this place. It's the worst and it definitely seemed uncaring to me at the time.

My dad goes here he’s been going here for years. There absolutely terrible !! He chooses to go here but there injecting him with things he had no idea what they even put in him. For instance he has bad vision and they told him there going to put this needle in his eye because it’s inflamed.... yet he has never brought home any paper work. I wish I could upload his eye 3 days later, it’s so red looks bloody but it’s nit blood it’s just red and looks very unappealing. Please don’t send your parents here guys or let your family get checked here.

THIS PLACE NEEDS REAL LEADERSHIP! Some great people but they don’t work hard because they don’t have to. I hope they don’t close this VA cause the vets deserve a good VA in NYC the richest city in the world. However this place currently is a disgrace to NYC

Excellent caring considerate staff. Modern building. Cafeteria available. Wheelchair accessible. Service dogs welcome. The Eligibility specialist helped me navigate the system. I will be receiving my military Veteran ID soon. The Eligibility specialist also assisted me in learning about other VA Military benefits. Veterans helping Veterans.

So far, the care here is good but getting appointments is a different story. Everytime you try to get an appointment its at least a month away :-( Olther than that the facility is fairly well kept and most of the health care professionals seem to care.

They took my grandpa to get staples removed all the way from jersey just to tell us hours later there was a breakdown of communication and he didn’t get them removed. Your telling me more than an hour commute for something so simple couldn’t get done! This hospital needs a complete revamp and more caring workers. Simple mistakes can lead to costly actions! If your family member is being sent here be on top of their actions. It seems they are already trying to hide so much with the visiting hours being so limited! I couldn’t even see my grandpa before brain surgery.

Possibly one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a VA. I've never been on hold for hours on end with no response. A prerecorded message tells me not to hang up and then has me on hold for 2 hours with no one answering the phone. Absolutely appalling.

I have only been here as an out patient, I have never stayed there, i have recieved both medical and mental health services from this location. Staff- i have had zero problems with the staff, it may take a little bit for someone to be available but i have never had an issue that wasnt addressed. Appointments- yes its hard to get an appointment, but there are hundreds of thousands of veterans in the city and very scarce resources. The pharmacy is excellent and their service is fast. In total i believe they are absolutely doing the best they can with limited funds and resources. The problem doesn't lay with the VA health system but it is the politicians who slash the budget and funding.

I would give it zero stars if I could. This place needs a makeover; from the leadership to the overall environment. I went to the ER for knee pain which took three hours wait time and all I got was a knee wrap and Motrin. Plus, the room for female veterans was terrible! There was dried blood particles on the floor and one of the chairs smelled like urine. Very disappointed and the VA needs to do better.

I came here March 4th, 2022. I escaped March 25th, 2022. There are some great doctors and caring nurses here, but there are also some bad ones who work here. Watch out for them. Some of the nurses will "slip you a mickey" by giving you the WRONG MEDICATION! I had been here for twenty days when I suddenly developed diarrhea. Turns out a nurse deliberately gave me a laxative through my IV to mess with me because I reprimanded her for mistreating another patient who was paralyzed and could not move nor speak. She had been asked to hand feed him, and she hated it. I was told to "mind my business!" Then she turned on the t v real loud to drown me out. That afternoon, I had a bad bout of diarrhea. They moved me to another floor where I didn't know the doctors or nurses that night. The next day I had diarrhea again! Guess who shows her face on that floor? The abusive nurse! She saw me and ran out the room. My wife was there and tried to talk to her. The nurse was asking for the police. That night, around 1 AM, after a shot at 10 PM, I again experienced diarrhea. I had been symptom free from six am to one am the next day! I immediately refused all medications oral or otherwise. I requested to be discharged to my local hospital with my PCP. It took a day, but I escaped that horror movie disguised as a hospital! Also, I was getting drained of blood three to four times a day, three vials each time! This was for twenty days straight! One nurse (Arien) had me bleeding out after. I called a doctor because there was so much blood! I had a towel under my gown which also had alot of blood on it. The food was good, but that was just a palliative! Question every procedure. Document everything or have your family do it. The doctors are test happy. There was always "one more test which will give us more info" whenever I requested to be released. Up untill the last minute of the last day, the doctors were still debating on whether it would be in my best interests to be discharged. The ambuluance said they were waitng for hours to take me home!

It wasn't until I moved to North Carolina that I realized how much of a dump this place is. False diagnosis and giving me the wrong pills. NYU medical students experimenting on us. 5 years I was on medication that made me worse and told it will make me better it's in your head.... Crazy.

This is by far one of the worst VA hospitals I have visited. As somebody who spent a good part of my six years for this country, the medical care I received was worse than from a third-world country. Good that I am still capable of fending for myself. With the way they treat the veterans, I am seriously worried for some of our senior vets. I visited the facility in early October for a routine checkup, and to prescribe the medications for my heart condition. Fast forward two weeks, not only did I get the WRONG medication (I asked for an extended-release version, yet I got the short-acting version), the seal on the bottle cap was also torn open. When I inquired for the right one, the nurse Elsa Trumata tried to say they were the same. I am pretty sure the ER version is for heart failure vs. the SA version for more of a heart attack. But the VA is quick to send bills for the medications. Now I am sitting here a month later, still no medication. At least I can still afford private insurance, imagine some of the senior citizen veterans who can only rely on the VA for treatments.

I went to VA NY Harbor Healthcare today and was treated rudely by information desk and then medical files area. I was seeking information on my grandfather (deceased WWII vet) for which I had proof that I was next of kin (I also had documents from NPRC referring me to the VA for additional medical info they did not have), but the woman at the info desk told me I needed a POA which was false (needed only for third-party inquiries) and stated rudely that I wouldn't get any information without it. Then sent me down the hall to speak to another rude person who basically told me he didn't know where I would have to go to get my information but it wasn't there. For the record, no one wants to ever hear "AS I TOLD YOU!" when seeking help. Neither was any help or made any attempt other than to send me away. If employees there don't want to work with the public or even attempt to help them, then they should go look for a back-office job. Simply horrible.

Got yelled at 3 separate times by the same guy at the the welcome desk. Yes, the welcome desk person yelled at me 3 different times each time I was asking for direction around the building. I was sent to get x rays by my primary and then person that worked there said they’d be back in 5 minutes but 90 minutes passed with out any person so much as walking by. Then the shut the lights off on me. Worst hospital help ever. Save your self some time and let your wounds kill you silently at home.

Service at the VA is fine. I've had several issues with ingrown nails taken care of there. However calling them is an exercise in frustration. The Operators frankly do not care. I have been trying to get in contact with a certain department and they just transfer me to an extension that rings forever or hasn't been activated, and when you tell them this they don't care and just transfer you again. They do not listen they only want you off the phone so they can go back to doing nothing. The actual people that you speak to for care? Polite, helpful, they do their best. I've had multiple ingrown nails removed both via less than invasive measures and invasive surgery type. Vision, physical therapy, counseling for stress. All were positive experiences. To summarize, they will take care of you, Don't waste your time calling, the general operators are completely incompetent, division specific operators are fine. But really, just go in person. The incompetence and negligence of the general operators is why this review is 3 stars. EDIT 3/8/22: I'm updating this to 4 stars. My care here has only improved. The people I speak to I feel are genuine in their care the only knock is the general operators whom I continue to avoid.

I've only been to this hospital one time. I took patient there. We arrived over one hour late. Yet the wait was short. After seeing doctor. We did EKG, X rays , and blood work rather quickly. Staff was polite and friendly. I also took my patient to get food. Food was good quality and low priced surprisingly. And even the cashier at food court was polite and friendly. Very good experience. Impressed.

I would give this VA zero stars if I could which is sad because I thought the Brooklyn VA was the worst but this one is really giving it a run for its money. I’ve been trying to make an appointment with radiology for over a month and have only successfully spoken to someone ONCE but I was told that she would need to confirm with my doctor before scheduling me and I should expect a call back soon. That was two weeks ago and I’ve called many times since with no response from either radiology or the women’s clinic. And now I’m supposed to manage to get my doctor to resubmit the order when I can’t contact anyone???

From a recent experience the ER staff especially the Triage Nurse were amazing. As a Vet I have been to a few different VA Hospitals (Los Angeles, Hampton, DC, and Baltimore). The staff here were not only kind but also attentive and patient. Also, the housing social workers on the 15th floor were very understanding and although they couldn’t directly help me they gave me several potential leads to work on.

I’m a veteran who used Prosthetics, so that is what my review is for. My contact there is Ken, and he is skilled and kind in saving me the trouble of having to come into the facility. Ken will often mail me the items I need to keep walking and he sees me without an appointment most days I try. Five stars for prosthetics. Walk in clinic is decent, but this VA can get really busy on a Friday, and it has a fair share of homeless trying to sleep in the bathrooms. It has its problems but they are well managed.

Marvelous!! This hospital deserves more recognition, I've been going in this hospital for about 2 years now, there hasn't been a single time where I was hesitantly disappointed, all the services are great. Doctors, Nurses and other workers are polite especially at the time when I was admitted for about month, this hospital offered me nothing but pure kindness.

Only 4 stars because rarely is ANYTHING a 5..but was well cared for as I found myself with a kidney infection while on a trip to NYC, was very sick. Staff and Dr (Nolan?) was VERY kind and took time to explain things and didnt let me leave until I felt better (I was there 6 hours). The VA in general usually gets a bad rap but ive been in the system since 1990 and have ALWAYS had very good care. Kudos to all of you who take care of vets. ?

I’ve been a patient of this facility for more than eight years. The primary care doctor assigned to me, it's incredible, as well as my women's health team. My first complaint is about the use of NYU medical students to treat Veterans, and if they are going to do this, Veterans should have the option to see the house doctors at NYU or any other medical school that supports Veterans Hospital when appointments at the VA are not available. To the VA, treatments as a whole should re-evaluate the policy of covering IVF only to marry females.

My father is a vet who uses this facility, and I have been there on several occasions. I am very impressed and appreciative with this VA! Almost every doctor, nurse and staff I met is super courteous which is very important as a place to treat people’s health. Kindness is lacking in so many places especially in the city. This VA actually gives me hope in humanity. They always treat my father with kindness and generosity. One time I saw a woman patient having a panic attack, and the staff around her was so respectful and mindful of her situation. I was amazed! It must be difficult treating difficult cases, but somehow they maintain kind and calm. I hope it stays this way. And thank you to all who work there!

Veteran myself, just had a tonsillectomy here by a senior year residency student from NYU who was supervised. I will say this the building he VA is in and the rooms may look unassuming or even run down, but the surgery rooms are IMMACULATE. The doctor did a great job, theydo take forever as I had 10 infections in my tonsils before cutting them out (3 of them were my fault as I wanted to wait and see if it’d resolve on its own) so I can’t really blame them. It does take some time. But when my friend came to pick me up. He’s gotten surgery at Bellevue and said the VA is much cleaner and the people are much more tentative. I’m originally from Los Angeles and the VA doctors there are terrible. Honestly for surgery I had a good experience!

All the bad mouthing for va care is unfounded I cannot speak for other facilities but —- My VA is outstanding ! My primary dr Hayashi Is a caring competent and considerate physician- her insistence on my colonoscopy Saved my life The affiliation with NYU is an additional bonus. For those of us in NYC- we are blessed Sal conti

Great service commitment to veterans. Dental Clinic is exceptional. Corona Virus has the hospital busy, busy, busy.

Definitely one of the rarest days of coming in as a walk in and out in less than 2 hours 🙂 much appreciated and many thanks to all the staff at the VA!

This is by far the most pathetic VA hospital I have visited. They are leaving the veterans there to rot.

Finally, his surgeon called me and told me to see my son in the recovery room within 60 minutes before going to the regular room. 😠 IF YOU LOVE YOUR FAMILY MEMBER DO NOT BRING THEM TO THE R Building , The staff and security are the lowest form of human beings dealing with people with PSYCHIATRIC problems.
