Absolutely phenomenal museum … so intimate and well-curated. It hurt my soul that it was free and so wonderfully put together, but it is nearly unknown even to native New Yorkers such as myself. Please set aside 30 minutes to tour this gem!

I walked into this small museum on a Saturday afternoon as it was in the neighborhood. I was amazed by this artist, both his many travels and the paintings he created during his lifetime. The use of colors and depictions of environments were great. This place is free to visit, so it's definitely worth a visit.

Underrated artist and museum. Roerich was well known in his day (first half of 20th century) but not very well known today. His works are symbolic, imbued with spirituality and presage a variety of political and artistic movements that followed. This small museum holds some of the pieces of his canon!

Interesting collection of the works of Nicholas Roerich a man of many talents and unique perspective. The collection is set in a beautiful brownstone. One of the pearls you find in New York city if you venture off the beaten track.

Extraordinary Museum of the prolific mystics, Nicholas & Helena Roerich. Their contribution to the world with their literary Agni Yoga teachings is considered one of the best in the world, along the book series of LIVING ETHICS. Gorgeous artistic paintings, artifacts and pictures can be found here with profound grace.

Great small museum on the Upper Westside, commemorating the work and life of Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947). Born in Saint Petersburg, Roerich was educated at St. Petersburg University and the Imperial Academy of Arts. He created the costumes and set for Le Sacre du Printemps by Igor Stravinsky. He later came to the US after the Russian revolution and also traveled widely in Asia, where he became friends with Jawaharlal Nehru and the Gandhi family. He was also promoting the Roerich Pact to protect sites of cultural value. The paintings at the museum are beautiful with particularly beautiful blues.

Really cool and a history of someone I had never heard about before. The man was well before his time. His entire family had multiple talents. Art,, archeology, writer and the reason Art is preserved in times of war today. It's free but I gave a $5 donation. I ended up buying 3 prints for my house. Love his art.

We are so happy to have found this museum! Inguna at the front desk is such a gem. If you have trouble getting up the stairs, do not come to this museum. We visited three times in one week!

View the paintings from afar, and you will feel like you are right there in the mountains with the artist. Amazing views, vibrant color, a nice collection worth visiting. And the entrance is free. A few blocks from Columbia University.

Love this place. All Nicholas Roerich's paintings are masterpieces that have inner and outer light. No pictures can express this light. Must see live!

Amazing museum with a great collection of paintings by Roerich. I just wanted to sit there and look at different shades of blue of the sky forever. I hope to come back one day. And there was a friendly and nice receptionist that was kind enough to tell a few stories about the building of the museum and the collection. I hope her dream to see a similar museum of Vermeer in Delft, the Netherlands, will come true 🙂

When you call a place hidden gem, this is the exact kind of it. The building which consisted of three exhibiting floors is such a precious and fetching marble itself. The entire space greets you extremely intimately and closely as if you are invited to someone's house rather than a museum. The collection--mostly by Nicholas Roerich--feels as the embodiment of the beloved humanitarianist before artist or intellectual notable. What a beautiful place. Would love to come back again in the near future.

This is an amazing place to visit in NYC. It's so perfectly meditative and the works of art are deep and meaningful. It glows with a sense of power that is subtle and beautiful. The art is so spiritual and yet connective to even our current times and states of mind. It's a real taste of a time and place in humanity that still flows forth, but quietly. The weekly music concerts are temporarily postponed, and I can't wait until they start again.

Amazing small museum, full of life and color that you can only find in Roerich's paintings! A must in NY. Bring cash, as it is donation based.

This gallery is a rare gem in NYC. It has a great collection of paintings of one of the greatest Russian artists Nicholas Roerich. The paintings depict the Himalayas and transport you into a magical and spiritual world. Best part is that it’s free! A great place to spend an afternoon.

This was my first visit since the pandemic and I was pleased to see that staff have added more materials to display such as sketches, photographs, books, and ephemera—all of which provides more context about Roerich’s fascinating life. The volunteer at the front desk, Yana (hope I spelled that correctly!), was so helpful and knowledgeable about the museum, materials, and other staff members. Additionally, the postcards and other items in the gift shop are of great quality and very reasonably priced. This remains one of my favorite museums in the city and I will absolutely be back for another visit soon.

Beautiful museum in an upper west side brown stone. Moving landscape paintings of the Himalayas by Nicholas Roerich. It’s on the smaller side and worth a stop to absorbe the beauty. His story and the way he works with light in the mountains is amazing.

Highly recommend this Free Museum if you're a fan of landscapes and Roerich's work. Definitely a hidden treasure in the neighborhood. Great prints from Nicholas Roerich available for purchase as well. The colors are far more vivid in person. Museum is 3-levels.

This is a fantastic museum. What a collection! A cozy setting not far from the Columbia University, easily accessible by the subway (red line), it's a must visit for everyone fascinated by Nicolas Roerich's works or anyone interested in early 20th century art. Amazing ambiance, I'm very happy I was able to pay a visit. I'm deeply impressed.

It was the first time there, and the experience was great. Every masterpiece is worthy to admire. The attention that we received even when we came late was amazing. This is the type of place I’d be coming back to.

Very quite neighborhood , little cozy museum. Not that much people, but stunning pictures , it would just like as its when I traveled to Shangri-La area like China and Bhutan , got real soul of mountains. I can stay in front of these beautiful panting and Channing , just so beautiful.

Underrated hidden gem. Free admission, interesting paintings and mosaics that will transport you to the most amazing places in Asia. I wish there was a little bit more clear information on Mr. Roerich up front, it was sort of sprinkled throughout, and I got hints of such an interesting life but not really an overview. I stopped by while doing the broad city challenge walk from the top of Manhattan to the bottom, and it was a welcome respite, and chance to discover something new. Nice clean restroom also very much appreciated!

Small but very cozy and beautiful museum. I’m glad I found this museum :)

It's a nice cozy exhibit of an artist's work from Russia. The work and interest of the artist seems to meld ideas of many religions both west and east. Most of the work is very technically interesting because much it seems very sculpted or carved. There's not a ton of space to stand back from anything so can really get a sense of his painting technique as far as geometric layout for both land animals and human. Kinda off the beaten path. I wonder if the exhibit ever rotates. It's it a larger limestone-like townhouse so floor creeks and some of the art is integrated into the wall detail

The Museum is small and homey with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. I loved how she greeted us warmly and encouraged us to ask questions about Roerich. The paintings are gorgeous with lots of natural panorama of Himalayans. Further, it's FREE and donation is encouraged. You can buy a postcard and small pin for $1 and other room decor for affordable price. Recommended museums especially if you like paintings about natures and history.
