Truly a must try for both visitors and city people. I've done it a few times already. Once you're on the water it's much quieter than the rest of the city. Really fun yet relaxing too. Expect to get wet so if you're able to, you should wear water appropriate clothing and shoes, though you can go barefoot in the kayak and on the dock. They offer complimentary lockers, changing rooms, free life vests of all sizes (my 3 year old was able to fit in a vest). They also have a stand up outdoor sprinkler to hose yourself off afterwards. Bring sunglasses or a visor as it gets really hot and quite bright on the open water and while you're waiting on the dock as there is no shade in those spots, especially on hot, sunny days. Everyone that works there is helpful and friendly. It's all run by volunteers and through donations, so feel free to give a little if you can to help keep this great thing going.

Revised review: way too small of an area roped off BUT, free and lovely service, fun. Book ahead for guaranteed in, super nice staff, no experience necessary (I think) Kayaks are hard to tip, they have two person. They give you life jacket, locker, etc.

Had a wonderful class last night. Learning about maneuvering the kayak with four different strokes. Thanks Mike for the lessons! The people here are very knowledgable and patient. It's a great opportunity to be out on the water and experience the city from a unique and free perspective. I would definitely recommend visiting this facility if you are in the city and looking for something fun to do. You also get a great core workout.

I went to Manhattan Community Boathouse with my Mother to learn about using a Kayak for her swim in The Henry Hudson River from Orange County, NY to Dutchess County, NY. I have never done the Kayak before, but it is definitely time to. Will be going at least another two times to Manhattan Community Boathouse with my Mother to learn more about doing it. I enjoyed doing it there. The employee's were very nice, & helpful as well.

What an amazing day we had. I took my son and it was his first time in the water with a paddle.Start to finish was very well processed.i love how they keep so neat and clean, briefing was super clear. I have paddled here before and in the river but it has always been fun, go with the flow, Enjoy ! ( not sure if Manhattan Kayak Co was located here before with Eric )

Free summer kayaking! They have complimentary lockers and locks provided Life jackets, kayaks and paddles all in very good condition They have single and double kayaks It's all free/donations accepted Free kayak - You can paddle 20 min max if there's a wait, otherwise you can paddle around for a while. - before 11am on Sunday no wait, 12-1 is pretty crowded Class (forward stroke) - friendly and helpful instructor, and aides - free hour and a half lesson - lessons are on single kayaks only - first portion was on land and the instructor gave some tips on technique - my class had about 20 people - they let us paddle around, and we reconvened a few times for additional tips/instruction - there were one or two other guides, in addition to the instructor, who paddled about to help out in giving tips and answering questions
