Fabulous collection in a fabulous building from 1966 by Marcel Breuer (1902-1981): the perfect combo. Many fantastic paintings by the likes of Vermeer, Rembrandt, Holbein, van Dyck, Boucher, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Romney, Ingres, Turner, Titian, El Greco, Goya, Whistler, Degas, Renoir, and many more. Don't miss the chance to see the Frick Collection in this unusual setting. The building itself is one of the greatest modern buildings in New York City with a staircase built for the ages. Update: the three fabulous Vermeers are back from Amsterdam. The new show of portraits by Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) looks perfect among the old masters of the Frick. I also love the café in the basement, The SisterYard, which is a perfect place to relax after taking in the masterworks at the Frick.

I was there during weekdays to see the works of Barkley LH and some works of the impressionists. The museum in its temporary location is housed in a small building but with 2 elevators. I started at the top and used the stairs on my walk down. The second exhibit is fashion and woman. Although in parts very progressive, it was extremely boring to me (and looking at the faces of most men accompanying their spouses too) but to astonishment very popular among women. Either woman got hypnotized upon entering the museum or I am just ignorant. There were no waiting lines and the the artifacts are perfectly curated and thus not overwhelming. Unlike my 2nd fav museum in the world, the MET. The Frick is def worth several visits. Although not allowed, i took some pics of the progressive fashion, i spare you the boring ones. Go see it yourself if you dont trust me 😁

something about this museum seems off. the staff could be friendlier. the building is under construction. and the gallery itself seems cold. the artwork, however, is beautiful but the way it’s displayed detracts from its beauty.

A temporary home for our beloved Frick Museum. The fabulous St Francis (Bellini) and The Three Philosophers (Giorgione). BIG shout out to Bloomberg for the tech to look and listen to insights about the artwork! A must have app! (Bloomberg Connects)

Thursday from 4 to 6 pm “paid what you want” . On third floor Degas, Manet and Monet paints are a experience to see it. The North Indian carpets, with lotto flowers surrounding trees. On fourth floor detailed decorated tables, porcelain pieces, well conservative oil paints. Detailed sculptures. Impressive large oil paints of royal figures of Europe. Exquisite taste of Erick Madison to collect pieces of world history. Educative, Didactic, for all ages and genders. Personnel are gently and attend. Really space to spend more than two hours or two visit to enjoy your eyes and mind.

In it's temporary location until March 1, it is still worth the visit to The Frick Collection. Over four floors with a great audio guide. You can successfully see the collection in 90 minutes but do download the app. for a comprehensive audio tour. Only drawback is the one working elevator took forever but that's a sign of the building's age, not the museum. I wish photos were allowed. I have mobility concerns so elevators are my saving grace.

Very clean and the staff are very nice. The paintings displayed were very interesting and wonderful pieces. The rooms were very big and plenty of room to walk around and admire the paintings. Admission is free for CUNY students so if you have a CUNY ID I highly recommend you go and check out the museum.

What a treat to see the Frick's very formal collection of traditional art in a large and airy space. Open till Mar. 3, 2024 only but worth a visit. Free Saturday tours, free print guides to the collection, helpful guards who sound like Art PhDs.

I have been to the mansion 3 years ago and now I visit this relocation museum. Although the atmosphere is different, that the paintings may feel less match with the grey walls, I have a chance to walk closer to the paintings and artworks to see the brushstrokes better. It is amazing that I can be that close to the painting and that the lighting is brighter so it is a nice opportunity to see the colour better. I also had a good experience using the apps to learn more about the artworks. Besides, they provide free service to hang up and keep your clothes so you can have a better experience walking around the exhibition.

Went for Barkley L. Hendricks show and was impressed not only by that exhibition but also the standard rotating Frick collection it was paired in contrast with. Also was pleased to see they encouraged free drawing with materials available for visitors on Fridays!

LOVED my first visit at The Frick! I came here solely for the Barkley L. Hendricks exhibit, which is absolutely INCREDIBLE! A total knockout, I highly recommend! I must give it up for the front door staff!!! I visited on 12/14 around 1:30 PM and the Frick has the most memorable museum staff I’ve ever encountered. The young men were so polite and greeted everyone cheerfully. The museum security was also very professional. One of the gentlemen gave me an awesome tip/note about the art which I appreciated because I was REALLY into the exhibit. Very beautiful museum with some amazing pieces! I only wish that there was a video that accompanied the BLH exhibit. There’s only an audio recording, but you have to install an app to listen to it, which was more trouble than I cared to give.

The Frick Madison brings together works from the greats of the Italian Renaissance in the former Met Breur location. This collection in combination with the self guided audio tour will leave you spellbound by the incredible artistry achieved. The audio guide provides a detailed historical context surrounding the artists and their work that is absolutely essential for anyone who wasn't an art history major. It is an important museum to visit if you are in New York City. No photography in the gallery thankfully.

Ok art museum to visit. There’s a variety of different paintings, statues, and pottery on display from the 13th to 20th century. The variety amount of artwork on display is remarkable. However, it is quite inconvenient that there’s no plaques below each piece of art and you have to go on an app to find information about each piece. I also didn’t like how you weren’t allowed to take pictures on your phone even if there was no flash, though I managed to sneak some anyways. Overall, there’s a fair balance of good and bad in this museum, and I’d say this place is okay if you want to view a wide range of art, have no desire for pictures, and have no problem using your phone to find info.

This review is for the Frick Madison. Yes, go! Went yesterday. If you love art, well worth it. The place was deliciously empty for a 1:30 ticket (escape the crowds and heat) and you can wander three floors of treasures at your own pace without crowds or anyone in front of you blocking the way. There is an audio guide as well as a paper guide. No photography allowed. I had a wonderful time and purchased a beautiful tote bag when I left. The staff are kind and attentive, especially at the front desk and gift shop. The security guards thanked me for coming when I left, which was kind, and a nice personal touch. My favorite displays were the Gainsborough paintings and the enamels. If you love art, this is for you. Plus, it's temporary, so you won't have this chance forever. Well worth it. Oh, also, it's only a ten minute walk from the Met. I did a morning tour of the Met, had lunch on the steps, and then walked over to the Frick. Perfect.

It was okay!! I have a disability and I prefer to take pictures of things to jog my memory and there are no pictures allowed at the Frick Madison Museum!! I guess that lots of young people were taking Selfies with the Art ( to post on Instagram);and someone got too close to the paintings and ruined it for EVERYONE!! I was able to get these 3 pictures before I knew that it wasn't allowed. The security staff was extremely nice and didn't jump down my throat, he just explained it to me in a nice manner and I really appreciated it. It was still GREAT seeing all the Art. Because of the temporary location , they didn't have much stuff for sale. Luckily I asked if they had any other postcards then the couple that were out and a very nice lady looked around and found a couple of Hans Holbein postcards. I was SO Happy!! Thank you to all the staff, you were very nice.

Such an amazing museum, had such a wonderful experience there. The contrast of gorgeous old masters paintings with a stark brutalist building; absolutely beautiful. A must visit for all art and architecture lovers. A brilliant museum experience.

Great art in a great building. I especially liked the cherub with the dagger going after a dove. What the Frick?!

Great overall collection. I went for a specific exhibition (Barkley Hendricks) but enjoyed visiting the permanent collection. Love the building (the old Whitney Museum). Definitely visit the cafe downstairs, great coffee and pastries and it has an outdoor space

I have been to the Frick before. I admit it was mostly for the architecture of the mansion. They are currently in temporary quarters will renovating the mansion. I saw the paintings in a different light. Loved the Gainsborough!

As mentioned by others, the works don't have wall plaques so you have to get info from the booklet or the app. The booklet is only general leaving one to the app. After repeated attempts I finally got the app to load and it worked for awhile, ever so slowly. It then crashed. After rebooting my phone I got it working again. This is a private museum that is snooty and has A LOT of rules, one being no photography inside (not even out the windows!).  This was exemplified by a funny exchange I witnessed.  A mother with her young son asked one of the guards "Where are the Whistler's?".  The guard replied "Whistling is not allowed in the museum."  Another guard interrupted and told the first she was asking about the artist.  The woman replied "yes" and the second guard yelled to a third, "Yo Bill.  Where are the Whistlers".  They were all standing in front of Whistlers the gallery. The collection is however exceptional. There are two Turner's and a Constable that shouldn't be missed. There is even an audio commentary for them, if you can get it running.

Great collection of portraits from the Renaissance and after. You can easily spend an afternoon appreciating their large paintings. Rembrandt, Van dyck, Holbein, William Hogarth, Whistler are a few artists to name.

Final days of amazing private collection of traditional master art pieces by Henry C Frick in a contemporary building. Still very busy on a rainy Saturday day. Helpful staff. Enjoyed a tour with a very knowledgeable docent. Bloomberg Connect app was very helpful. No photo or water allowed but you can leave it with coat check.

Frick has a magnificent collection from the Venetian house of the Renaissance collector Taddeo Contarini. It includes Bellini’s St. Francis in the Desert and Giorgione’s Three Philosophers. The permanent collection assembles great paintings from the 14 and 15 centuries. It's a must visit! Anyway, It is not comprehensible why each painting does not have the usual description on the side, with historical context, analysis of the painting and info about the artist. Truly a big disappointment!

Very nice collection. At its current residence on Madison the paintings, sculpture and ceramics are displayed well. You can see whole collection in 1.5 hours. There is an open Cafe as well, which is nice after viewing the collection. Not busy when we were there. See some famous paintings/artists without a line/gathering of people in front of it.

Absolutely beautiful collection, the building itself is somewhat dark/dimly lit and cold but the artwork is beautiful and the staff is very helpful and friendly. There are no wall plaques but there is an audio guide and a paper guide that is very helpful. It is also extremely reasonably priced (I would say that it is one of the best value museums in NYC) and a wonderful experience, you can definitely spend as little or as much time as you want there. I fully recommend it and would love to go again!

There isn’t a bunch of overall collection and you’re not aloud to take photos. On Thursdays after 4 how much you want to pay for tickets is up to you.

Always enjoyed visiting the Frick (especially in it's original location) to see their permanent collection. This time was lucky enough to have gone to a group event focusing on Barkley Hendricks portraits. Grand and beautiful exhibit of work. Have learned so much about the artist and his work.

The curators have executed a masterful vision in presenting the collection outside of the mansion. Their choices result in the viewer experiencing works without distraction and highlight not only the paintings but the sculptures and decorative arts as well. Viewing the works at the Breuer is a singular opportunity, and one not to be missed.

I enjoyed the Frick Madison museum. The artwork on display was great. The tour book and Bloomberg app were also very helpful in describing the artwork.

I like this collection but for many items it's difficult to find or read the name of the artist and the subject. The printed guide was useless. There should be a warning at the entry that the only way to know what you're looking at is to download and use their app. The cafe is pleasant for coffee or tea.

Had a great afternoon at the temp exhibit location. No photography allowed. The whole exhibit was easily walkable, with plenty of plenty of guides about each piece. Wonder how many of the portraiture are family pieces that used to decorate various European mansions.

Their collection is exquisite. They have El Greco originals and originals by Whistler. I want to return when their collection is back in their home building which is being renovated. The only complaint about Frick Collection is that they would not let me photograph any paintings. Most museums let you photograph their exhibits but Frick does not. Their collection of paintings and ceramics is exceptional though, and very much worth exploring. It is a really intimate setting.

Beautiful art and sculpture. Also some furniture and a grandfather clock (my favorite). They don't let you take pictures though. I managed to snap one picture before being told no.

Loved the art: Monet, Renoir, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Whistler. The sculptures, furniture, pottery and paintings were all wonderful. Definitely one of the best art museums I have ever visited.

  • 5/5 Phil O. 2 years ago on Google
A magnificent collection beautifully displayed in its new temporary home enabling each cherished work of art to be even more accessible to the viewer, though sacrificing the context of grandeur in its surroundings. Do not, under any conditions, miss watching the videos of the weekly Director and Curator talks, which are insightful and priceless. These were prepared during the COVID crisis and add tremendously to the enjoyment of the works of art.
