John Finley Walk

Park

👍 Great run route if you're looking for one. Unfortunately the path doesn't go south past ~72nd due to construction that's been taking over a year. People often mention walk,

"ALWAYS HATLESS" The promenade on Carl Shurz Park on the Upper East Side of Manhattan is known as John Finley Walk. John Finley was among other things the Editor the New York Times. He was known for walking Manhattan. The sign pictured here contains a pun and a huge error. John Finley had a distinctive "Gandy Dance" walking style known by everyone in the city. A John Finley Walk isn't just a path along the river! Try to "John Finley walk" next time you visit! "Always hatless, generally with a blue thistle in his lapel, he strode the entire island in a gait known as the Gandy Dance - two short steps, one long - which had been devised by railwaymen to facilitate their walks along the cross-ties." - Jan Morris - Manhattan '45

I didn't know it had a name! My daily walk. Great views, no crowds, couldn't ask for more.

Great place for a river side walk from East 81st north to Gracie Mansion. Big and little dog runs are a bonus!

I love this walkway but it’s constantly closed off in certain sections because of construction so just be careful. I’ve many times had to turn around and bike or walk back because of a blockage (usually in 70s?) they are trying to extend it anyways below the QB Bridge so I am excited for that!

I'm amazed that people love this walk, totally oblivious to the deafening noise of the road that borders it. It ruins everything. Where is the serenity?
