😠 I’ve been going here for 7 years now. It stared off amazing but over the years it’s beyond down hill. Getting a appointment with a doctor is always a long wait usually a month in advance. When it comes to getting your medication or refills you better start calling at least 2 weeks before you run out... People often mention care, time, staff, health, Callen, appointment, patient, people, years, doctor,

I’ve been going here for 7 years now. It stared off amazing but over the years it’s beyond down hill. Getting a appointment with a doctor is always a long wait usually a month in advance. When it comes to getting your medication or refills you better start calling at least 2 weeks before you run out. Even then I’ve had to wait up to 3 weeks to get a refill on time sensitive medication! Leaving me feeling Ill. Currently I’ve called 5x times in two weeks for a script that they keep telling me is on the way. You are left playing phone tag and frustrated. It’s to the point where it’s cruel negligent to the community and their patients.

I have been coming here since the year 2001 and became a patient in 2011. I used to love coming to Callen-Lorde. It used to be such a vibrant, happy community health center that I looked forward to seeing the smiles and running into friends and acquaintances whenever I was there. The staff had always been there for years. They always remembered you. They smiled. The doctors were amazing. The blood tech were amazing, the level of care and the level of dentistry in the state of the art dentistry always blew me away. I remember when people could only wish that they could be a member of the Chelsea location, but they were at capacity for years and I felt so lucky to have been one of the people that was able to be a client. Now when you go it's like a morgue. Everybody is upset. All of the staff don't smile. They're aggravated you can't get the proper dental care they want to send you to a dental school because they don't have enough staff to do the proper dental care. The doctors don't stay. I HAVE HAD A NEW DOCTOR MANY TIMES OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS. They tell you that insurance only allows them 15 minutes with you and then when they feel they can help anybody because there's too much stress they quit. So once you find a doctor that you like a couple of months or a year later they are gone. You don't feel like a human when you go there. You are just your first name and your date of birth and other than that they really could care less. You have to make an appointment to get a blood test and when they transfer you to the operator to make the appointment they have to leave a message for the staff to call you back and they never do. You called to get a refill for your prescription and that's also another hassle. I'm going to start looking for another LGBTQ health care facility in New York because this is unacceptable. If Gal Myer was still there he would be appalled! The place looks run down and falling apart. They were supposed to do major renovations and changes to upgrade the place right before the pandemic and now it's so depressing. Do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to go.

Here I am with another one star review. ! Same issue new month. Ya don’t answer calls, schedule appointments a month away from the call date. Peoples health is serious. Always goes to voicemail. I had to get help from your call center person to get someone on the line. Ya should shut down. Thank you for the short nd infuriating time, I’m taking my business elsewhere.

I have no problem waiting for ANY length of time on the phone...but when you finally get to speak to someone they are; 1. Annoyed 2. Unintelligible 3. Passive aggressive 4. Rude ....the list goes on and on and on. I've been seeing my GP there for 14+ years and each year it gets worse and each year you can only book a general health visit 5-8 months out. You're in this sector to help people. People who are struggling with health and mental health issues. Frankly you are failing at your first line of defense; your staff

It is unfortunate but because of Callen Lorde’s unflinchingly rigid scheduling I can’t exactly recommend this to trans people who need care when they need care. I am not sure if this is just my experience but you are assigned one doctor and mine just so happens to have one open appointment a month if not less. I was not able to see another person in a swift enough manner for it to help and there is no guarantee that they will be ‘better’. So I cannot recommend this place for care. And although I have never had any unpleasant experiences at Callen Lorde, the way they function, for me at least, isn’t effective at best and causes stress at worst.

I have to deal with massive incompetence from staff nearly every time I go here, whether it’s losing lab results, forgetting to actually complete check-in, being misgendered to my face while at a trans healthcare clinic, or failing to send prescriptions in a timely manner to my pharmacy. I’ve been patient throughout the pandemic because I understand that it’s been stressful and there may be staffing difficulties, but I’ve also witnessed staff make fun of patients and disclose private patient medical information while seated in the waiting room. It is infuriating that a medical practice that gets funding to serve a marginalized community treats its patients so indifferently (and even cruelly). I feel like I have to fight with staff to actually get them to listen to me when I try to work through these issues. It’s ironic that they feature a Crisis Helpline so prominently on their webpage because you will feel in crisis dealing with this staff. EDIT (10 months later): My final straw was receiving a single refill on a medication I need to fill indefinitely because CL wanted me to come in for my 6th blood test in 8 months. As I am insured, I have the luxury of seeing a different doctor and the quality of my care has jumped exponentially in a matter of 4 months. My final question in the health portal still remains unanswered. If you have the means to seek care elsewhere, please do so. I pity anyone who is stuck using CL because they don’t have the financial means to use a different clinic.

I used to absolutely love callen lorde as it's a very welcome, queer place. I really enjoy the theory of gay community health center but unfortunately, callen lorde has turned into something else. You are basically a birth date or number here and everyone is so stressed from working so much that there really is no time for patient care. If they get a good provider or someone who is it in for the joy of health care, they leave in a few months because they know they just can't make a difference. People come and go so much you don't really know who's who. If I were you I would avoid all this and find a queer community of your own. I absolutely love the workers who get in it to change things but unfortunately this place makes it impossible and they will leave. The theory of this place and the founders are here to help the queer community but something has changed her and it's just not the same. Spare yourself the hassle of over worked, stressed people who sign you in angrily, nurses that will jab you in a hurry and meds that take way too long to get. Callen lorde I cast thee out. No more recommendations from me, I will be on the look out for another community, queer, safe heaven. Sad!

I recently needed a referral for sleep study to be done. They called me and told me they had sent the referral over. I scheduled the appointment. When I arrived for the appointment I was informed NYU Langone never received the referral. This is the SECOND time this has happened. Last time I saw the doc anywya and now owe NYU a grand. So I never got my sleep study done yet, and had to push it out a month and half since they are backlogged. I wouldn't trust these folks with anything. Their org is disorganized and not able to keep up with the scale they attempt to operate on. 3 cheers for not being able to do even the basics the right!

Overall CL was OK, theyre Dental Dept has always been… just bad. After pandemic Dental really took a turn for the worst. I called (August 2020) several times to schedule an appt with a dentist though the latter part of 2020 & was told that theyve been working on “Covid Proofing” the entire dental dept & that it should be completed by the end of the year. I was informed that emergency appts were always available. In Jan of 2021 I had a emergency. A filling this office had previously done on me was causing discomfort. I stopped by to make my appt on person and or hopefully be seen by the dentist, just to be handed a few sheets stapled together with many dentists numbers. (They were still “Covid Proofing” theyre dental dept at this time) lol ok. I was contacted a day later by the dental and was asked if i wanted to schedule a virtual appt. I realize there are many challenges now, covid, safety , the work place etc . I dunno , this sounds like we might need an entirely new dental team starting with management. Dental offices across the city are open for business & seeing clients. Why is CL lagging so much? Particularly it serves a community that counts on the services Callen Lorde provides.

Literally the worst place ever. Being trans I have 2 options ; get misgendered & dead named at a regular doctor's office or come to callen & get the worst care ever. Very disheartening. I have to fight to get my prescription every 2 weeks. They don't answer the phone, they cancel appointments I've had for months, they never have my prescription ready. I legit want to give up.

The worst customer service of all the health clinics I have ever been to. You see a doctor, who is never your primary doctor because again, this place has the worst customer service. The doctor has no time for you, again, because this place has the worst customer service. You ask him to give you refills of your prescriptions, but he doesn't, because this place has the worst customer service. So you call and after being on the phone for 5 minutes listening to irrelevant messages nobody will ever answer, so you leave a message and ask for a refill, but nothing ever happens, because again, this place has the worst customer service. So you send an electronic message, but nothing also. No record of the message you sent, because again, this place has the worst customer service. Finally you go to the place in person to ask for a refill and in a good day it takes them 45 mins to deal with it, because again, this place has the worst customer service... Who ever runs this place has no idea what they are doing. Time for someone to come in and make patient experience a priority.

I was a patient of Callen Lorde for many years and never really felt like this was the place for me. I had issues with my medical provider always running in the room and treating me like a number. His bedside manner was awful. Secondly, I read that being on Atripla for years can damage one's liver & kidneys. I brought this to my doctor attention he switched me to Decovy. After new employment, my insurance would not pay for Decovy and my medical provider switched me back to Atripla even after I had concerns. My last draw with Callen Lorde was when I finally sat down and looked over my blood work and realized that my liver enzymes were elevated over a period of time. At the time, I was doing a lot of drinking and it showed in my liver enzymes. However, my medical provider never once brought this to my attention. I have switched over to the Samuels Clinic at Mt. Sinai and I'm so happy that I made a healthier choice when it came to my medical care. The Samuels Clinic offers comprehensive services and not just medical attention. The staff is professional and very attentive to my needs. In addition, my medical provider always has time for me and NEVER rushes me in and out. I'm so grateful that I left Callen-Lorde!!

You are safer dying of illness than being a patient at Callen-Lorde. It took me 6 months, from the time I first contacted Callen-Lorde's offices, to receive an intake appointment. During this appointment, my doctor (Kate Bautista) repeatedly touched my thigh without asking and made unprofessional comments about my appearance. She made notes of my prescriptions in my chart, but did not request for them to be sent to my pharmacy, and did not tell me this. I lost almost a week of work, while in a rapidly deteriorating physical and mental state, due to not receiving my medications, just to sit on hold with Callen-Lorde, all day, for days in a row. Their offices are severely understaffed. The staff they do have is utterly incompetent, withholds information, and seemingly refuses to reach out with urgent updates regarding your care. After probably at least 20 phone calls (none of which resolving my urgent situation) finally, I made time to go to their Chelsea office in person, where I waited at least a full hour, before receiving the wrong prescription. When I got home, I noticed this and I called the Callen-Lorde pharmacy, where I spoke to a man named Peter, who told me that my doctor prescribed me the wrong items, and that I should use the incorrect items anyways, despite all medical literature I read telling me it would be unsafe. You are safer dying of illness than being a patient at Callen-Lorde.

This place is getting worse and worse. What’s happening there? Where’s the management? They have no doctors available. I have a serious health condition. My doctor retired and they want me to see a nurse. How’s this even legal? 50 minutes on the phone to speak with an operator… how’s this possible? You should just close your doors.

Wow! Really poor experience today at Callen Lorde Chelsea. I called ahead and they said they’re taking walk-ins today. So I came by to be turned away because they are not taking walk in for urgent care, only sti testing, which was not made clear at any point during the phone call. I trekked over from Brooklyn only to be deined health care from the front desk. Thanks alot!

The vast majority of the reviews here are negative so I shouldn’t have been surprised that my experience with the pharmacy had left me without my medication. This was all due to the pharmacy just not wanting to make a phone call to move the prescription. That’s it. Nor would they fax it. Ultimately, what we should ask is if Callen-Lorde is the best we have for LGBTQI people? Should all of the private donation and tax money they are receiving leading to terrible service, poor systems, and bad communication? Are queer people not deserving of better? I’ll never use Callen-Lorde again. Honestly, I think Michael Callen and Audre Lorde would be ashamed to see what the clinic, named after them, has become. Our public dollars should go to helpful organizations for queer peoples.

Quality unfortunately has decreased over the last few years. Hard to get prescriptions filled, they don’t really return messages so you have to make sure you actually speak to someone if you need something, and wait times to get an appt are very long. They cancelled my appt yesterday with 15 min notice and were not able to reschedule me until February. Great mission though.

I saw that Callen Lorde posted an apology letter in September 2023 to their website. When I opened the letter, I almost started to laugh. The apology letter was about “deadnaming” people meaning using incorrect gender names on the Callen Lorde patient portal. If anyone working there reads this please wake up and read the other reviews on here! Not being able to get an appointment for several months, waiting for hours when you do have an appointment, and running out of medications are far more important concerns your agency needs to address. I had hoped with a new CEO the organization would change but now I have lost all hope. If this what a Social Justice Warrior ideology medical center looks like I want out.

This center is a mess, from not returning calls, forgetting prescriptions, and not respecting patient privacy. Last visit my doctor touched oral products that were going in my mouth with their barehands. I’ve watched front desk in the HOT program give parents information without confirming permission first, and openly airing out patients info they just got off the phone with while there are people in the waiting room. No privacy, and no respect. I’ve been going to Callen Lorde for almost ten years and go because it’s my only option. Queer and trans people deserve health centers that actually care about them and take time to respect them. Callen Lorde is literally the trenches, plus unsanitary.

It’s unfortunate that Callen-Lorde place has fallen in quality from what it once was as an institution. What was once a very open and friendly space has turned into catty front desk receptionists and months long wait to see your primary care physician. When I was younger I would 100% recommend Callen lorde for young queer folks who needed routine health checks; now that is not the case.

Great place but be careful with therapy here , been pushing people into medication more than actually helping . ( literally was told by a therapist that they couldn’t help me till I saw a psychiatrist , Usually it’s not suppose to be like this , has gotten more white washed in the couple of years and some staff have gotten attitudes when asked certain things . Still a great place overall for help but let’s be honest it’s changed .

Callen-Lorde Chelsea is the best place for your medical needs. Things has gotten hard to program any appointments after the pandemic. They are not to blame. Therefore, I'm a understanding patient. This pandemic has changed everything around.

Sophie Nurani is an amazing provider the sixth floor mental health went farther than the extra mile to facilitate my treatment. Pharmacy staff in my opinion are good as well they will get to know you on a first name basis. They deliver my meds to Staten island. Some things are hit and miss others state of the art

They screw up everything. They don't keep up on your paper work. So you think your all set for something and your not. Example I set my appointment and told them I would need a ride they told me I was all set. Not the case they tell me I needed to refill out a form for a ride. Three days before my appointment. I spent 4 hours on the phone trying to get a ride. I got the ride but they gave me the wrong number to the cab company and didn't give the right number to me.this is not the first time it's happened

Great care for trans people, they also offer prep and HIV and AIDS tests for free. The only issue is that they don’t answer or return phone calls and you always have to wait a few days or weeks for virtual appointments even if it’s urgent.
