We adored our trip to this movie set. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, but my wife is less so and she still loved it for its overall beauty and uniqueness. We spent a good half day exploring on the tour and loved the beverage at the end of the tour in the cozy inn. A must do if you're in the area, fan or not. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Breathtaking experience with interesting facts along the way. Must do it at least once when you visit NZ! The tour is guided and each time slot gets on a bus and is driven to the set. Tour guide was friendly, funny, and enthusiastic. Answered all and every question we had. There aren't any actors or anything like that on the set/tour. You walk around the whole set. You are taken around different hobbit holes and told fun facts about the actors and the set. The set is so detailed with fun props and real veggie gardens. The detail was amazing. It is so green out there! There is also a beautiful large lake. At the pub/bar you can choose between ginger beer or a couple of different alcoholic drinks. Adult prices were 89 $ in April 2022. Masks not required while out doors on the set but were required indoors and on the bus. Tour lasted maybe 45 mins - an hour.

Second Breakfast was such an incredible treat! From the tour to the food it was fabulous! The chance to be in the Green Dragon Inn with just our small group, and then go to the Mill House and dine in such a special environment was like being onset for all the fun of making the movie! Entering a hobbit house to see the incredible level of detail put into every little prop, each piece of furniture, the hints of life that the hobbit lived, made it seem that I had walked into their little home for a comfy invite for the weekend. I couldn't wipe the smile from my face the whole time I was there! I just felt as though I was partaking in something very special on so many levels!

What a glamorous place to visit. It’s about 2 hour tour which you can book online or buy tickets on the site. Little expensive but worth it. The tour guide was absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, I could not remember her name. She explained everything in detail and made it a magical tour for us. You have to pass the beautiful green farm land before reaching the movie set. The farm land is over 1,200 acres. Once the tour start, they take you on the bus and then you star walking through the hobbit holes. Each spot has a story which your guide will tell you. Tourists are not allowed in the holes yet but they are building two holes that people can actually go inside. They will open them before December, 2023. At the end of the tour they will offer you an alcoholic or non alcoholic drink. Also, they will offer you are souvenir for free. I highly recommend this activity if you would love become a star in the Lord of the rings.

So if you haven't seen the Lord of the rings movie.. what are you waiting for . It's been out a few decades.. Well unlike avatar which is a beautiful but fake place... Lord of the rings was filmed at a beautiful but... real location. The tour guides here will also give you tidbits of trivia which people who have seen the film over 10 times may know, but seeing where everything happened online is not something you can explain.. you just have to experience it. Takes you around the shire and they now also have a couple of hobbit houses which are fully furnished and you can go inside (opened in 2023 so if you went before that, you probably should go again). Definitely worth a visit.. or two.. now I'm going to watch the movies again.. for a tenth time..

A must for any fan. We were very lucky to have great weather which made for great photos. You can do a self tour but I highly recommend visiting with a tour guide. They have great information about the space. Only negative was the gift shop items. Really need some new and exciting items. Construction on a hobbit dwelling was in progress. The dwelling will allow visitors to enter!!!! CANT WAIT.

A definite must-see. Glad I was able to finally check it off my bucket list. They are very organized, Every tour is set up by times. We had a great guide, too. The tour was about 2 hours long. Loved we were able to go inside one of the homes too. Highly recommend.

Love the experience and tour. Not wheelchair or stroller friendly as you walk along a dirt track along the hillside of the Shire. Better to go in smaller groups so you don't have to wait so long to take photos. Tour guide very informative and we got to have a complimentary beverage at The Green Dragon Tavern. If it was a 3hrs instead of 2hrs tour it would have been better so you could soak it all up better. Felt a bit rushed.

Fun filled day! First time to this place was thwarted due to not buying a ticket first, was fully booked unable to get inside hence highly recommended you book tickets earlier. Not cheap, expensive but really worth it for adults and kids would love to be here in this magnificent piece of the earth down under. Love the ginger ale, was fascinated with the fake tree and so many stories/secrets you would only learn once you get the tour. If you haven’t been to this place, you missed a lot.

Unfortunately too touristic, but it worth it if you're a fan. If there is so many people it's also because it's good. I've been lucky to get a nice guide but I heard some people didn't and then they didn't really enjoy the experience. Since the December 1st, you can get access and visit inside the hobbit holes. A plaisure for you eyes that to travel through the shire, a magic place of this amazing saga

The detail was mind blowing. I would do this tour on every NZ visit, given the opportunity. You feel very well cared for throughout. And the way the walking part of the tour is done and timed is brilliant. You are able to capture moments throughout with no other people in photos. Its easy to feel like you're in a real place that Hobbits live, they've done a great job. A tremendous job.

A must do trip if you are in the north island of New Zealand. The place transports you in to the day to day life of Hobbits in their picturesque shire that was rebuilt for The Hobbit series. If you a are a LoR or Hobbit series fan, you will feel like you're are at home. They recently opened a Hobbit hole open for visitors. You can explore the full size (hobbit size) home with everything including kitchen, bedroom and toilet. The tours do require a bit of walking up and down the hills, so wear comfortable footwear. It gets quite cold even in the middle of summer, so wear layers to keep you warm. The tour will go on even if it rains. They provide umbrellas in case of rain. And last but not the least, take plenty of photos.

Could not recommend this place more. It is absolutely magical and a dream to visit. I went twice in the week I was in NZ and loved both tours. Highly recommended the evening tour with dinner. A feast fit for all of middle earth. The tour guides and staff were all amazing.

Beautiful place. Takes yuou right into the movie experience 😍😍. Amazing landscape. Ample car parking space. A Coffee shop on premises. A bus will take you to the actual location from the shire. The short drive is also scenic. Beautiful views from both side of the bus.

To preface: I am a pretty big LOTR fan and I had a lot of expectations leading up to the tour, and honestly, it was more magical than I could have even hoped for. It was amazing being able to go inside one of the Hobbit holes as well. I am so glad they added this to the tour. I feel like it adds a lot of depth and would be one reason I'd love to do the tour again.

Really fun experience to see and hear so much about how the shire came to be. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour! The detail that went into everything just boggles the mind. Includes a complimentary (ginger) beer at the Green Dragon as well! Must book in advance during busy season.

It is a very beautiful place to visit even if you are not a Hobbit fan. You can see hobbit holes and even you can go inside. Our tour guide (cant remember her name) is really friendly and super helpful. You can taste beer in the dragon inn. You have to buy tickets in advanced and have to be there at exact tour time

I last visited this tourist attraction when it first opened after the Lord of the Ring Trilogy and it was amazing to visit this location at the height of Lord of the Rings Fever. Back then it was just the locations as the building sets were stripped back, due the the farm owners not allowed to keep the structures. Even in that state, it was amazing to visit. But now after over 10 years since my last visit, it was incredible to see the permanent sets still there used for the Hobbiton movies. This place is magical and if you are a fan you must go, and even if your not a fan it is still a fun and magical place to visit. It is a decent tour length of about two hours. This tour is ideal for tourists and Kiwis, families, couples or any group wanting a fun day out. There is a cafe and plenty of services. If you are a local, this is a great option during the week, we drove down from Auckland and went here on Friday, it was a smooth 2 hour drive.

Joel picked us up early morning at our Hotel. He shared so much history of the movie set. He is knowledgeable and funny and made our trip very memorable. For individuals with disabilities in our group, he was considerate of their needs and tried his best to make the visit a great experience. My family loved the props he had at the ready to be used for photos. I definitely recommend this tour, just wish we had booked a longer tour, i really wanted to take more time to enjoy the scenery and would love to walk in the forest.

Amazing place!! It's felt so good to be there after seeing the photos of the place for years. The weather was really good which was awesome. The guided tour is amazing, the place stunning. The only problem is the amount of people per group, it should be less. Some people just cannot wait for you to take a photo and pass in front of your camera. Especially if there are kids, it should be separated. They're disrespectful and annoying, but besides that all good.

This has been on my bucket list for ages - have finally made the trip, and was not disappointed! Our tour guide was great, the buses taking us to and from the set were warm and comfortable. And the preserved movie set itself is just so charming and well maintained, all combined with natural beauty of surrounding land.

Very cool experience with a super nice, friendly, knowledgeable guide. Was worth it! You board a bus from the parking lot and take a short drive over to the movie set. A guide will lead you around the set, plenty of opportunities for photos. Easy walk. We were lucky to go on an absolutely beautiful day which definitely added to the experience. They are doing construction but it does not detract from the experience at all. The tour ends with a beer at the Green Dragon. Loved it!

I have seen the movies a few times and have lived in NZ for over 20 years but never been to Hobbiton until today. I wasn’t sure what to expect. It transported me back to the movies being there. It was a magical time being in The Shire. If you haven’t been there and are thinking of visiting, then rest assured you should go visit. Visiting the Green Dragon Inn was amazing and having a nice cold mug of ginger beer to cool us down was lovely. Right from the ticket personnel to the bus driver to the guide, everyone was so helpful and knowledgeable. I am glad I finally went to see the set of my favourite movie.

Awesome tour. Did the lunch one and it was fantastic. Plenty of free car parks, check in is fast and the tour guides are lovely and informative. The set is amazing and you can now go inside one of two hobbit homes which are incredibly detailed. Buffet lunch was tasty and we got plenty of time to relax and eat. Recommend a hat or one of the complimentary umbrellas if it is a hot day.

LotR fan so of course I loved it. It’s beautiful and the level of attention to detail is a testament to how well the movies came out. It’s so lovely to see in person. The tour guides are all friendly and knowledgeable. Even if not a fan of the movies, the landscaping alone is worth coming to see. And who wouldn’t enjoy a nice walk through such beautiful gardens?

Awesome experience, from start to finish. They have also just opened up two new houses for a full tour inside and the attention to detail inside those was simply superb! The tour guide was very friendly and gave the group adequate time to explore everything. Very importantly, we never felt rushed anywhere, and neither was it crowded at any particular spot, even though there were so many tour groups all around. Crowd management was excellent. Even though the tour involved a long walk, we never felt tired and the free drinks at the end were a nice gesture. I will strongly recommend this to everyone. There's much more here than the photos available on the internet suggest.

Surprisingly awesome experience and so well done, well worth the price and the friendly staff make it even better. Has to be one of my favourite experiences especially of something that was a movie set you actually feel like you are in Hobbiton. They had some construction on while we were there but we got a free Stein for our troubles which honestly was the best souvenir for us 10/10. We will be back for when the next hall is finished and to try the banquet sounds awesome and as a stout lover getting an unique stout at the end 👏🏻👏🏻 heaven

Everything, service, guided tour given by Kate(she made sure everyone was interested during the tour), the movie set was maintained up to the mark, even the food at the cafe was amazing…. Although the cafe was just closed they served us a pizza. And yeah not forget the Alexander farms and their 13,000 sheep’s were a delight to our eyes. I would highly recommend this place. Kudos to each every employee of Hobbiton movie set tour.

My friend and I booked online and attended at 1.30pm. The group was quite small and Melissa the guide was fantastic. From the minute we got on the bus to leaving she was very informative, high spirited and all round great. We were never rushed and she understood people were there to take photos, hear some cool facts and enjoy the experience. The set is fantastic and the complimentary beer was awesome! There is a bit of construction work to add an amazing addition to the set, but it doesn’t affect your experience at all (just a bit of noise when close by). Plus they give you a limited edition chalice as a thank you for visiting during the construction. Overall amazing and would 100% come back!!

My wife and I are currently travelling around the north island of New Zealand. We had booked a Hobbiton tour ahead of our trip as we knew it was a popular attraction. The tour was very interesting and the enjoyable. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable despite only being in her 3rd week on the job! It is also worth noting that we were running late for our tour and the staff very kindly accommodated us by moving us back to a later tour. All round a good experience.

Amazing!! Beautiful New Zealand Landscape, loved the tour and tour guides were very friendly. We arrived early and because of this they offered us a spot in a quieter time zone. We enjoyed the cafe while we waited and thoroughly enjoyed the free beer at the tavern at the end of our tour. Went home with a souvenir as well! Highly recommend even if you’re not a fan of the movies.

We had a great time despite the rain. If you are a fan, it is definitely a great stop to make! We were lucky enough to visit just a couple days after they opened the new hobbit hole interior tour as well which was absolutely astounding and gorgeously done. It was all really interesting and beautiful inside and out. Our guide was funny and very informative as well as super accommodating and helpful.

Such an amazing place. The amount of detail in this set is immense. I'd definitely recommend booking on a tour around the village. They're currently building some hobbit houses you can go inside, including Sam's house. The tour we went on included a lunch in the marquee by the Green dragon, which you get a complimentary drink in (stout, water or ginger ale). The buffet lunch gave a wide range of choices and there was a large desert selection as well. Even the toilets were designed like a hobbit hole. Tour guides were also very informative and helpful throughout the entire tour.

I have been going there every year since 2019 and have tried some of the tour variations. I recommend doing any tour with food. All the Hobbiton tours guides and staff up to this point have always been extremely helpful as well as being amazing at making it so much fun. Even if you are not a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings series.

  • 5/5 Katerina M. 9 months ago on Google
This was such a lovely experience! The tours are spaced enough that you manage to take pictures without the crowds. We got warned multiple times about an ongoing construction on the site, which was very kind, but it did not really spoil the experience at all. The guide was very fun and the food (we did the tour with lunch) was great. We loved it!
