The best hostel in New Zealand. I felt like home. The kitchen, the living room, the rooms, the super clean bathrooms, the super nice and generous owner who let me use the washing machine for free after 2 weeks hiking, everything was so perfect I wish I stayed 2 more weeks.

Perfect place to stay. The owner is so friendly that you really feel like home. The kitchen is equipped with spices, oil and a dishwasher! Prices are absolutely fair and I had a wonderful time.

I wish I could give 6 stars. It is an absolutely lovely place, a home away from home. Merlyn is a wonderful host, very warm and welcoming, but also giving everyone their space. The hostel is quiet, green, it has a beautiful garden with lots of spots to sit, a spacious living room, and a very well equipped kitchen with basics such as oil, salt, etc. Rooms are cosy, you get a soft towel, there’s soap and shampoo. All those small things make you really feel comfortable and relaxed. I wish I could stay longer!

Lovely place and facilities. Spotless. Great shower. More like a 4 star hotel. Easy 10 minute walk into the heat of Invercargill CBD. I got an upgraded room for free, thanks.

Beautiful old house with flower garden, nice kitchen and common area - all you wish for in a hostel!We stayed in the female dorm with ensuite bathroom and even got towels.Will definitely come here again if I go back to Invercargill.

Very clean, tidy and comfortable. The new owner is very friendly and helpful. The beds are very comfortable, plenty of books to choose from and board games to keep you busy.

One of the best hostels I’ve been to, when I was in New Zealand. You will really feel like you’re home. I was really sad, that I only stayed there for a couples of nights.

We stayed the night here on our way down to Stewart Island. It felt like we were staying in a lovely warm and welcoming home rather than a traditional backpacker, which was a nice surprise. I would stay again.

I would highly recommend Southern Comfort - BBH to any prospective visitor to Invercargill! Merlyn is an amazing host and always happy to help with queries you might have. The villa itself is beautifully appointed, warm and inviting. I would certainly come back to stay when I next visit Invercargill 🧡

Very nice place to stay. Clean, tidy and well decorated with good taste. Felt very homy and comfy. Its garden has beautiful flowers and lush trees keeping you from the street. Just on the opposite side of Queens park. The quiet location promised us a sound sleep. Will definitely go there again and recommend it to my friends.

Beautiful hostel, very clean. The house is antique but cozy and the owner was nice. From experience, you should call them to book or go on their website. They have more rooms on there available than on Bookings or other booking websites.

Incredibly cute hostel in range of shops. Comfortable beds (with a lack of plugs in the rooms however, there were around 4 in total), great kitchen (free tea, oven, fridge). Very high walls (see photos, Banana for scale) giving it a Victorian esque flair, we found it comforting Staff was helpful and friendly Quote: "It feels like staying at your aunt's"

What a lovely hostel. Situated in a quiet street within walking distance of Queens Park and also the city centre. Our host Magdalena was delightful and made us very welcome. Our room was comfortable and very clean and warm. The kitchen was very clean and even had a dish washer. This is almost unique in hostels. The lounge and dining room were comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our game of monopoly with the other guests and Magda. Thanks for a great stay.

Absolutely loved this little haven of peace and tranquility. The hostel is ideally situated, super close to the Queen's park and just a 15minute stroll to the city centre. The kitchen is clean, neat and with all the tools you would want. The lounge is like stepping into your English auntie's living room. The beds are comfortable and don't squeek or move along when you do. Plenty bathrooms for everyone. The entire hostel is styled as a home and that's how it feels. A slice of home/heaven amongst dirty and minimal hostels. Come here to settle down after a long trip or just if you're passing through. But don't come here to get smashed.

We really enjoyed our stay at Southern Comfort Backpackers. It feels like you are a guest in someones home. The character house is charming, colourful, comfortable and warm. It's set in a quiet neighbourhood with a beautiful garden and outdoor area. Very close to the city shops and the wonderful Queens Park. By far one of the nicest "backpackers" I've ever stayed at.

Good place for one night stay. Kitchen facilities are good. With modern amenities. Got good garden and backyard.

32 dollar bed in a dorm room. I liked it here. It's very peaceful and inviting and reminds you of staying at an aunties place. I slept like a baby, and I don't know what time I was supposed to check out, but I rolled out of bed at 12 and there was no hassle, just a smile. And dang bro it is such a relief being able to park freely on a quiet street without hassle. Yet just around the corner you can see the big yellow M of Maccas. I wouldn't mind living at this place.

Best Hostel I've stayed at while in NZ, without question. Merlyn is a lovely host and provides a homely welcoming atmosphere. The hostel, rooms and grounds are well kept, clean and inviting. A place you love to come back to, especially after a long hike. I had an excellent stay and will certainly be back, if I get the chance.
