What an amazing and beautiful park! It was definitely one of our favorite parks in New Zealand. We enjoyed the well developed and well marked hiking trails, the easy access to trails, and the variety of loop and short walking trails available to us. The scenery and views were amazing from both the base and near the summit of Mount Taranaki. We also enjoyed the waterfalls, the streams, the amazing high swinging suspension bridges, and the uncrowded trails and viewing points. We will definitely return here for more amazing hiking experiences!

I did the Pouakai Crossing in late April. Took a return shuttle which dropped me at the Egmont National Park Visitor Centre and picked me up at the car park on Mangorei Road. Almost 9 hours including 2 breaks was taken to complete. Felt like itโ€™s much harder than Tongariro Crossing due to endless stairs but definitely worth trying. My effort was rewarded by its breathtaking scenery. The 19 km long route was Visitor Centre- Holly Hut- Pouakai Tarn- Pouakai Hut- Mangorei Road. Many parts of the route were wet, muddy, and slippery. Although itโ€™s been upgraded, it still requires a good level of fitness and waterproof footwear.

We went here for our first kinda big hike of the holiday and boy, did it deliver! The views were absolutely spectacular! I was kind let down because the summit track shortcut from the holly hutt track was closed but overall the hills was insane!

Amazing place to visit. Definitely recommend the Pouakai circuit, it takes 2-3 days depending on how hard you want to push. It's an intermediate to advanced walk due to there being a few slips, steep bits and Rocks to climb over. Huts require pre booking so plan ahead if you want to get the most of it. When going to the summit of Taranaki, it can be cold even in summer. Bring gloves + something warm just incase. But dont go overboard, try and keep it light because it's a long way up. Even if your fit it still takes the 8-10 hours on the sign. There are many alternative car parks to the one next to the visitor center (which gets full quick with overnight campers in self contained vans), which you can still leave your car overnight. If wanting to stay overnight somewhere close to the mountian, would recommend volcanoview campground, it's very cheap with a great view and quick drive up to the visitor center. It's not the flashiest facilities, but it's cheap and a small family run business. If backpacking I know that there is a hostel in new Plymouth called ducks and drakes that has a van that goes to the visitor center to drop of and pick up people, I've heard good things about them and it is one of the few ways to get out there from new Plymouth without a car.

Taranaki Falls was a lovely walk, got to see the snow on Mt Raupehu which was amazing. I will say if youโ€™re just sightseeing on the mountain there isnโ€™t much to do other than sit and watch the skiers :)

Magical at any time of year. Best to view in winter of course but summer is still pretty impressive. Great climbing tracks with sensational views on a clear day.

Great national park. I did the Around the Mountain circuit. Took mainly the lower tracks because of the snow on the upper tracks. It took me 5 days but can easily done in 4. Really good tracks and all the huts during the trip are really nice. Before to leave make sure you check with the visitor center the weather forecast and also which track is accessible or not.
