The actual Bunker is a truly unique, fascinating place to tour around, and played a pivotal role in defeating the plans of Hitler’s Germany during WW2. It’s a great time to visit now, as there’s plenty of availability and at £9 such fantastic value. I am really pleased with the tour I had here. I began by going around the museum. This is housed in a new, modern, light, airy and warm building next to the Bunker entrance. There is plenty to see here, and gives some useful background information about the Bunker as well as the RAF personnel and machinery available at the time. There’s plenty of interesting exhibits as well as some interactive opportunities to wear uniforms and see historic film footage. My Bunker tour started at noon. My volunteer tour guide was great. He provided a short history of the site itself outside, before we then went down into the Bunker. The steps down were not too difficult. They are split into three sections with good lighting and hand rails both sides. At the bottom we went through into the Plotter Room, where we spent around 30 minutes. The guide explained the building’s conception and construction, and then how the Dowding System was devised and how it worked. Seats are provided and at times I stood to see the map table more clearly. Although the Plotter Room is the biggest single area it is only a part of a very extensive suite of rooms. We finished off by looking around the rest of the rooms on the mezzanine level over looking the plot table. The whole is a real time capsule with all the original fixtures, fittings and even some personal effects. As a 62 year old I was a bit concerned about the climb back up but it was very manageable as long as you pace yourself. A really great experience.

The tour guides made the visit amazing! Very interesting little place. Educational and packed with history. It only took just over an hour for the visit, but it's well worth the money.

Interesting how invisible tiny WW2 bunker for max 40 people became a visitor attraction. Many interesting historical facts to learn. Fascinating history of heroic Polish pilots Division 303 fighting for Britain because British pilots didn't fancy to die 😜 Recommended for all ages. Wars bring people closer....

Super interesting museum about one of the most important moments in this country’s history. Very knowledgeable guide who talked you through every moment of the Battle of Britain. 70+ steps down into the Bunker so if mobility is difficult then you won’t be able to enter, however the exhibition in the entrance building is fully accessible and very interesting too. Nice cafe as well. Recommend.

What a wonderful experience, we really enjoyed our guided tour, the lady was brilliant, knew her stuff. The visitors centre is fab, didn’t use the cafe but food looked nice. Cheap to get in and can spend a couple of hours here easily. Highly recommend

If you are into this sort of thing, then you’d love it! It’s super interesting and informative, learned a fair bit as someone who isn’t really into this sort of thing. I am local, so I am glad I went and did it, but wouldn’t be bothered about ever going again as it isn’t really my sort of thing. But very well run and done!

The house itself was amazing, however the experience was somewhat ruined by a very rude staff member who started off my telling off my 75 year old mother for standing in the way. He then had a go at me for not carrying my bag in front me which I acknowledged and did as I was told. Instead of stopping there he raised his voice and kept on lecturing me. I completely understood the reason but the fact that he was very aggressive, wouldn’t stop shouting and made a scene in front of everyone made feel very embarrassed for the rest of the visit. The rest of the staff were lovely though. My advice is if he doesn’t know how to talk to people maybe he shouldn’t be working there dealing with members of the public.

There is nothing else like it! A journey back in time inside this wonderfully atmospheric old house. You will hear voices, experience sounds and smells, but never quite get to glimpse the occupants. But you will feel that they are there, sometimes having just left a room before you enter, as evidenced by the half eaten meal left on the table and the glass of wine nearby. An experience not to be missed!

A truly wonderful experience. We took my great nephew aged 12 to help him understand how winning the Battle of Britain prevented Hitler’s army from invading the UK. Following in Churchill’s footsteps to stand over the big map of Southern England and have the system of how the Luftwaffe attacks were thwarted was an unforgettable experience. I would urge every parent to take their kids to this fabulous museum and listen to the expert talk.

Very interesting living museum. Tucked away in a side street in Spitalfields. It's an house old that is set up as a walk through museum. It's not talking as you wander through the rooms as if you are observing London family life through the ages. See the furniture, the kitchens, the bedrooms. Hear the noises, smell the smells. Limited places and times. Booking is a must.

Very emotional as my father was a pilot during the second World War. There were two retired RAF gentlemen showing us around. The tour is the bunker only and takes about an hour. The museum you do yourself. During holiday season it would be advisable to book. It is about a six minute walk from the Uxbridge train station. They have a lovely cafe if you have to wait awhile for the tour. The bunker is exactly as it was on the day and the significance of the colours and lights all make sense by the end. Amazing feat when you consider there were no mobile phones or social media. Well worth the visit.

Fantastic presentation of what went on in the bunker during the the Battle of Britain. The hands on exhibitions are a good idea to see if you can handle and interprete the information.

Definitely worth a visit. The tour of the bunker operations room was informative and thought provoking. There's an excellent exhibition to build on the narrative of this momentous battle for air superiority.

This is such an amazing place, it should be much more well known than it is. My 8 year old daughter generally gets bored at museums or historical sites after a while but she sat through the entire tour completely enthralled. The tour guide was excellent, really articulate and knowledgeable and kept a good pace. She described the Battle of Britain in such an engaging way and gave really good context to the events. I’m sorry that I didn’t catch her name as I’d like to leave her a review. She was a younger lady with brown hair. The bunker itself is so atmospheric, it’s a really special place. I was a bit worried that it might feel claustrophobic down there but it doesn’t and the museum upstairs is really good as well. The customer service was great too as we couldn’t go the first time because my daughter was ill so they rearranged our tickets for us. 10/10!

Is is interesting? Sure. The concept of a silent, intimate wander in a house as if the occupants had just left is intriguing. The smells and soft sounds in each room piped in through hidden loudspeakers add to the atmosphere as do the incredible collection of knickknacks and interior design. But £15?! Total ripoff. So, so glad I went for Open House London for free as I would have been so annoyed to pay that much for a 20-minute visit.

Sadly disappointing. Having been excited by the conceit that you have the feeling that the family are just around the corner, it felt more like a visit to Miss Haversham's house: dusty, unloved and untouched for decades. The whole place needs a good professional clean by museum trained staff if the fiction is to survive.

We arrived an hour before it closed but were turned away as they were busy. Shame you can't book in advance because we travelled a long way to visit. We will try again another time, and perhaps I can review it more favourably then.

I can't really comment on the bunker itself, as we didn't go in. But the building is impressive. The Cafe there is nice, also dog-friendly. There are two planes on display in the garden, a Spitfire and a Hurricane. There is some information on the squadrons that flew from here, including the Polish squadron (apologies for not remembering the details).

A great museum based around the heart of Britain's defenses during the Battle of Britain. Our guide around the bunker was very well informed engaging and friendly. The exhibition is very well presented and contain a great mix of original artefacts and stories from people who fought in the bunker. Children are free, but they will get the most of it from around eight and up. Those eho bring toddlers are not doing themselves or others who share a group with them any favours!

We came here for a group meeting away day and it was a very pleasant experience. The building itself had a very modern design which included an exerbition hall, cafe and conferance room. The room they put us in was a good size for our group but if you have 25 or more people, it would have been too small. The room had a wonderful view of the exerbition Hall containing WW2 artifacts which was very nice to look at. The food they gave us was ok at best, but we did have a good supply of tea and coffee throughout the day. Parking is available and a picknick area was situated outside the building.

I took a group of pensioners here and all the staff were very welcoming and kind . The cafe had reserved some seating for us and put out jugs of water and glasses for us as it was such a hot day. None of the group were fit enough to go down to the bunker and staff put on a very informative film in the theatre about the bunker instead.

With my interest in the RAF and military history combined with the excellent reviews of course I had to visit. I was impressed. Our guide for the tour of the Bunker was Jack and he is a natural, thank you. The exhibition centre is modern, explaining the development of Britain's air defence from the First World War, into the post war years and the Second World War. Including the Dunkirk evacuation, the Dieppe raid and D-day. I'm so glad to have been given the opportunity to visit such an historic site.

Don't miss the guided tour of the underground bunker. We were lucky enough to have Phil as our guide who was entertaining and extremely informative about the pivotal role this place had in defending Britain's airspace. As you descend the stairs you go back in time to 1940 as the bunker is just as when Churchill visited. The visitor centre is also very good with interactive displays.

This is the bunker from which the operations of 11 Group were controlled during the Battle of Britain, that Group being responsible for the air defence of London and the South East. To see and understand how the squadrons responsible were controlled, dispatched and enemy movements from radar and Observer Corps sightings was brilliantly explained, and there it all is, most of the actual infrastructure all there or restored well. Excellent guides and frankly one of the best visits I have ever had to an historical site, the significance of which to British, European and world history cannot be understated. There are two Spitfires and two Hurricanes on site, the visitor centre and museum is excellent, and a good (if slightly slow service) cafe too - excellent cakes!

Such a great place. Not huge, well spaced out and with artifacts relevant to the war effort in Hillingdon (which is what makes it really special). Great for an hour or two with the kids (more if you do the bunker tour). Also has a good coffee shop for a quick pitt stop before or after!

One of those gems in London that even residents might not know. Dennis Severs was an artist who painstakingly recreated the interiors of this house that had been built in 1724, to suggest to a visitor that an 18th century family still lived here. Uneaten bread and unmade beds....definitely a pleasant change from all those boring "Stately Homes"!

  • 5/5 Andy S. 3 years ago on Google
Absolutely magical place, a real London must and unlike anywhere I've been before. Usually find walking around stuffy stately homes lacking in immersion but with the candle light, smell of fireplaces, dust and sounds of the family creaking through the house here it totally immerses you. It's no exaggeration to say this is as close to stepping back to such an evocative time you can get, especially on the evening tours. Personally think £15 entry is a bargain as it allows them to keep visitor numbers down which makes it so intimate. Been many times and can't wait for it to reopen to return. Few lovely pubs nearby as well to head to after.

Incredibly atmospheric and evocative of a time gone by, far more so than I would've imagined before going in. You're encouraged to adopt a thoughtful frame of mind and it's more rewarding for doing so. This isn't like any other 'attraction' I've been to. Well worth it in my opinion.

  • 2/5 James B. 4 years ago on Google
It could be a very interesting experience if you were the only visitors, but the private tours are really expensive. The whole point is to immerse yourself in the rooms and use all your senses etc, but this is very difficult when there are ten other people in the same room. It would also be nice if they enforced the rule that people should be silent. Overall it's a cool idea, but I don't think it's easy to get the full experience without paying over the odds for a private tour

A TRUE IMMERSIVE JOURNEY INTO THE PAST! Dennis Severs' House is a "still-life drama" created by the previous owner Dennis Severs as a "historical imagination" of what life would have been like inside for a family of Huguenot silk weavers. It is a Grade II listed Georgian terraced house. From 1979 to 1999 it was lived in by Dennis Severs, who gradually recreated the rooms as a time capsule in the style of former centuries. The motto of the house is: Aut Visum Aut Non! - "You either see it or you don't." The house dates from approximately 1724. It is one of a terrace of houses built of brown brick with red brick dressings, over 4 storeys and with a basement. Dennis Severs (1948, Escondido, California – 1999, London) was drawn to London by what he called "English light", and made his home in the dilapidated property in Folgate Street in 1979. This area of the East End of London, next to Spitalfields Market, had become very run-down, and artists had started to move in. Severs started on a programme to refurbish the ten rooms of the house, each in a different historic style, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The rooms are arranged as if they are in use and the occupants have only just left. There are therefore displays of items such as half-eaten bread, and different smells and background sounds for each room. Severs called this "still life drama" and wrote: “I worked inside out to create what turned out to be a collection of atmospheres: moods that harbour the light and the spirit of various ages.” Woven through the house is the story of the fictional Jervis family (a name anglicised from Gervais), originally Huguenot (French Protestant immigrants) silk weavers who lived at the house from 1725 to 1919. Each room evokes incidental moments in the lives of these imaginary inhabitants. “The journey through the house becomes a journey through time; with its small rooms and hidden corridors, its whispered asides and sudden revelations, it resembles a pilgrimage through life itself.” Severs bequeathed the house to the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust, an architectural preservation charity, shortly before his death. It is now open to the public, who are asked during their visit to respect the intent of the creator and participate in an imaginary journey to another time. This House Museum is really unique and Unexpected and also helps you understand more about the history and culture of this stunning neighborhood!

One of the most impressing places in the world. You just have to take your time to queue up.

A worthwhile and wonderful experience. The tour takes 15 - 20 minutes. An impression of 9 rooms over 4 floors. Each floor a different epoch between 1720 and 1800.

This is an interesting house to visit. The history of the Spitalfields area and of the houses built to accommodate Huguenot silk workers is fascinating. And Dennis Severs’ interpretation of the lives of the fictional Jervis family in the house on Folgate Street is engaging. However, the idea that the house somehow allows you to smell and see and hear your way back through the ages didn’t work for me. The slightly bonkers and eclectic mix of modern, vintage and antique objects made me smile but nothing more profound than that. Plus the staff all take themselves a bit too seriously. At £15 a ticket I would have liked to have got a bit more out of it. However, it must be expensive to keep the place up so I didn’t begrudge it too much.

Hard to do it justice in a review. Stepping in, you slowly get sucked into a different world. A place for quiet, for letting your imagination take the wheel. Best come early, queues can get quite long!

Very well done. A complete sensory time travel experience. Though I’m not sure the fibreglass insulation falling through the upper floor ceiling is true to the period. The final room is an interesting attempt at satire. The pomposity, arrogance and rudeness of the door man does ruin it slightly. They have obviously created a high demand by limiting the opening period to a fraction of each day, less time than the web site suggests. The door man obviously takes pleasure in turning people away.

Informative & intriguing. Did you know an air fight during the WWII could only last 15 seconds?! Well, neither did I. Go for it. You'll get to be in the actual bunker where everything was planned out in real time during the Battle of Britain.

The tour of the bunker itself lasts around an hour and includes a 40 mins talk in the Plotting Room, in which the guide explains all about the bunker's pivotal role in the Battle of Britain and WWII as a whole. You then get to look around the Plotting Room and it's associated rooms before going back up out of the bunker and into the museum above. The sense of history is palpable throughout. The bunker is very much worth a visit and an absolutely fascinating way to spend a couple of hours.

Fantastic museum with the bunker tour an absolute must. Our guide Andy was just fantastic with an encyclopaedic knowledge and a fun and engaging style. A true hidden gem of a museum. Nice cafe too and an easy stroll from Uxbridge station.

Very informative few hours spent today at the Battle Of Britain Bunker exhibition. Cost for two adults just £18.00, great value. The 2-hour tour was fantastic (we were so lucky to have ex-RAF Warrant Officer and exhibition creator Chris Wren as our guide) and was well worth doing. The Bunker itself has been wonderfully restored with public money (Government and Council) and now looks identical to as it was in 1940. The main exhibition (in the larger building next to the bunker) is well designed, full of all the history around the Battle of Britain, and also highly interactive with video, audio and playable exhibits. Be aware of the 76 steps down to the bunker, and back up - but we felt it was easier if you took your time. Weekdays obvs quieter but you might run into a school group! Very nice cafe and shop also. Book online in advance too. Enjoy.
