Well maintained and beautiful green grounds. Presentations on the war of 1812 every half-hour by people dressed in the military uniforms of the era, in English and French. Musket and rifle firing demonstration (they are loud!), interesting soldier barracks, officer's quarters and kitchen (with live cooking!). Fun afternoon! Took us about 1.5-2 hours to experience it.

The reason for my low review is because of the price. It is $12.50 per person and parking is $8. I would be OK with the price is there was actually more to see. Most of the visit is reading stuff on the walls that you could pull up online. They did have a musket demonstration and a drum and flute (different name) demonstration. Here is a tip if you're going to go....ask to purchase the sales receipt of someone leaving for $10 (that's 2 people). Because you're allowed to go in, leave and comeback.

The Historic Fort George is a must see if you are heading to Niagara. Entry is very cheap and you get to experience a rich part of Canada's history. You can visit different buildings of the fort and interact with staff who educate you on the history of the not just the War of 1812, but the individuals both military and civilian who were affected. It is undergoing renovations and due to Covid-19 there are some things you won't have access to. I was able to show up in time for the weapons demonstration and an oral history of the fort and its relevance during the war. It is very family friendly. They have also done their part to include the significance and importance of First Nations people to the war of 1812, but also how they were failed after the war by both the U.S. and Canadian governments. There was mention of Black soldiers but it would have nice for more detail i.e name and more specifics (for example there is a burial ground for (black soldiers less than 5 minutes away) which would be a good tie in historically. There is also a giftshop on site.

The site is excellent and undergoing a substantial facelift. We visited for an exterior walk around as the site was closed during the pandemic, and we knew that. We tried to pay for parking for the 15 minutes we knew we’d be there. But we could only pay for the full day, which seemed unfair. When we came back from our short walk about we had a $25 ticket from the Niagara-on-the-Lake parking authority. We specifically went to Niagara-on-the-Lake to help support local businesses and did this. So this ridiculous ticket, when there was only one other car in the huge parking area, spoiled our whole day. This is not the way to get tourists to come back.

Amazing museum. Reenactors demonstrate musket fire, fife and drum, life in barracks, officer living, and other aspects of life in the British army in 1811. Well worth your time. Probably would take about four hours to do the living museum completely. But forgo the displays if something live is happening. The docent at the gate will inform you of the schedule. Even if a rainy day, go!

Absolutely amazing experience! A must if you're around the Niagara region. The live musket show was fun to see and all the staff are very knowledgeable.

This was an absolute joy to visit. Adults will enjoy the history, the kids will enjoy seeing the staff dressed in their historical costumes. Musket demonstration was a lot of fun as well as both the music and cooking demos. The barracks are very well kept and you're free to wander the fort. Chat to the soldiers, very knowledgeable about the Fort's history. Entry fee is around $15. Fun time for kids and adults.

A nice little self guided historical site. There’s not a huge amount to see here, but everyone is friendly and happy to answer all your questions. The price to enter is very reasonable. You can see everything within about 45 minutes. Though this can be extended by watching some of the shows (they occur multiple times a day). (I enjoyed the musket show the most.) ————————— For more food and travel, follow me on Instagram @yamisohungry

Fort George National Historic Site of Canada is a largely recreated 18th-century military fort located on the west bank of the Niagara River near the river's mouth. It is situated on the remains of the original Fort George, largely destroyed during the War of 1812

Very cool visit! Worth a stop, lots of interesting schedule activities such as musket demonstrations and other ceremonies. Full of history and a very important part of our history. Plus apparently it's super haunted so if you're into that stuff check out the ghost tours.

A fort that was invaded during the war of 1812. Not a big fort, I would say it's small enough to finish in about an hour. Costs about $12 for a ticket to enter. Has several exhibits of the barracks and quarters of the soldiers that would have fought and stood guard during that time. There's a musket firing demonstration at certain times and a talk about medicine during that time. Overall, it was a good dose of history for a summer afternoon, not too overwhelming. A good place to visit if you're in the Niagara on the lake area.

A fun time was had by all. It was super informative. I absolutely highly recommend going to see the musket demonstration. I wish they let me fire one, but something about being untrained and liability issues... All the different buildings had great displays, and the people working there really knew their stuff. I wish I was also there on a day for the fife and drum demo but alas, it was not meant to be. I love the fact it's a national park so the entrance fee is not that high. Do not sleep on the gift shop either. I found all kinds of cute souvenirs. Have fun and learn a lot!

The staff was amazing to the adults and children alike, in our group. My 9 year old really enjoyed the activity book/scavenger hunt and it gave us time to read the placards and pick the brains of the staff. Their detailed knowledge was truly impressive. There is a lot of thought and care put into Fort George. Had a blast!

We are usually lost in our routine. On August 6,2023, our visit to the Fort George impressed us with the reality show performed by people who are in big love to their country and historical place and are very proud to be part of it. It is not only a demonstration of soldiers acting. We spoke to a few of the actors, each of them are so deep th theie roles and characters , so they can tell you a lot of interesting monens of life and traditions of that time reality. Thank you all for your hard work!

This was our second time at Fort George, this time we had the pleasure of being there on Halloween night. Always such a blast. I enjoy hearing the different experiences, stories and historical events from the different guides. They really know how to set the atmosphere and the tone for the evening. Thank you for such an awesome time.

Well-maintained. Beautiful. A timely reminder of the sacrifices the military have made to keep us safe. Open spaces for kids to run around. Muskets firing. Great guy in the mess hall. Great gal in the soldiers' sleeping quarters.

Nice spot, very nice presentation of firing muskets. Good spot to visit for about 1.5 hour time. Interesting to learn from employees of museum dressed in era's clothing. Nice staff of museum, and lovely service at the gift shop.

A great fort to visit and learn about the war of 1812. Definitely, something to learn for all ages.

  • 5/5 Jay C. 2 years ago on Google
Wow. You can't have this experience anywhere else. Walking into the past over 200 years ago. The people there that keep it together as in the actors there are truly amazing. You feel like your back in the 1800's right away. So much to learn and see there. 100% a must do for anyone coming to Niagara on the lake.

One of the greatest historic sites I have ever visited. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and polite. This isn’t your regular museum type of site, they specialize in historical animation, which really brings the site to life. In the summer months they have a group of about 15 students who portray the infantry of the Fort providing muskets demonstrations as well the historical drill and tactics. There are also another 5-10 costumed interpreters stationed around the site that will inform you about the daily life inside the Fort. The Fort also has a working officers kitchen which bakes fresh goodies for guest to try (outside of Covid times). With several activities to partake in for both children and adult, and with children under 12 getting free admission, I highly recommend spending and afternoon here.

I know it says this is temporarily closed but we were still able to at least walk around the grounds and look at the outside of all the buildings. A great place for a walk around a historic site, even though the learning aspects of it are not open at the moment.

Wonderful restoration of an old fort. I was there on a Saturday and the living history displays were fantastic. 15 red coats doing drills in the common. Tours of the block house and barracks. Description of camp life / the lives of wives in the fort. Beautiful grounds.

A great historical look at the War of 1812 from the British-Canadian perspective. Some great demonstrations include musket loading and shooting, musical instruments, daily life at the Fort, and other interesting tidbits of information. It is worth it to tour both Fort George and Fort Niagara across the Niagara River to hear about the war and history from both perspectives.. They also have Ghost tours.

Part of the Heritage Pass Tour...with careful planning you could do all 5 sites. Fort George was our final stop and we needed about 30 more minutes. But it was wonderfully done and needed more than the 30 mins we had left in our day.

It was a wonderful visit. Being from the US, it was fascinating seeing things from the Canadian point of view. The folks there were very informative and answered all our questions. A number of the interns were college students. One was majoring in history and another young man was in medicine (oncology). Another gentleman did a presentation from an American soldier's perspective based on transcripts written for news articles back in the US. He was also an excellent fife player and loved music history.. We spent all day there and would go back again.

I ordered the chicken and peach pot pie (?). It was a huge disappointment. There wasn't any peaches in it....so it was essentially a chicken pot pie and quite honestly, when I go out I don't want to taste something that I make at home. Service was super quick...like, really quick...too quick. We sat outside which was really lovely. They really made the outside dining beautiful and relaxing.

Cool place to teach your kids on War of 1812. They've rebuilt all of the fort for history and fire black powder rifle (no lead, blocked with wax paper for safety).

  • 5/5 Ellie I. 1 year ago on Google
This was a fun trip, we watched the musket demonstration there's also a demonstration of the army drummers and flutist which was really impressive. The demonstrations are done by reenactment actors all dressed up in army clothing of the 18th century. They gave us lots of information and answered all our questions. They had lots of exhibitions too around the fort. Takes 1 to 2 hours to get around. I would recommend it if you have kids or if you want to learn more history of the area.

I love history and seeing these sites alive with activity and of course the fine summer guards who portrayed the 41st Regiment of Foot with a keen eye for accuracy. I was also pleased to see the return of in person reenactments with the fine folks from both the War of 1812 and Napoleononic groups putting on an excellent display. Nothing like the smell of gunpowder to bring me back 200 years. In addition to these the site staff were friendly helpful and passionate about the site and its history.

  • 5/5 Sean Last Name H. 1 year ago on Google
A wonderful experience. And such friendly staff and historical actors . A great place to spend a day especially when there's battle reenactments. This day they were doing the Napoleonic wars, so you had to suspend belief a little and pretend you were in Spain for this reenactment lol

We were there in late-June 2022. There's a Parks Canada shelter at the front where you can get your tickets and also some Parks Canada items. We did end up getting some apparel. Overall, it was an educational tour of the historic site and it was interesting to learn more about the history of Canada. It's a big site area with various rooms where you learn more about how people lived in the past.

Being from the states, it was very eye-opening how the explained the war of 1812 from the British perspective. It seems like nether side was really the "good guys". But the amount of history they taught us in a short time was staggering, I still like to talk about all you needed was two teeth from each row that could tough each other and be so tall to join the British army. And the musket demonstration was amazing, I learned a ton and finally know what the "Fog of war" meant.

During the summer months the site is alive with people dressed and reenactments of the time during the War of 1812. Each of the buildings are well-documented and young students in the area are hired to play the part of soldiers and townspeople on site. They are knowledgeable of the history of the fort. There is ample parking for vehicles and the price of admission is reasonable. I recommend that you check out the entire fort.

It was a nice visit. We booked a private tour and the whole place was literally just for us. It was interesting and the lady that gave us the tour was very knowledgeable. You are obligated to wear a mask when indoors and while we didn't mind it, the guide was clearly uncomfortable and I felt sorry for her, especially that there is construction going on and in some areas was very noisy, so we had hard time hearing and couldn't read her lips to overcome the noise. We were with young kids, so they didn't care much for the story behind the place and mainly enjoyed only the outdoors. We got a musket firing demonstration, which we found to be pretty cool, and the girl who performed it was excellent and funny. From some reason I expected the place to be bigger. The whole tour took a bit less that an hour, and albeit nice I doubt we will be back, it's just one of those places you visit once.

  • 5/5 Caitlin K. 3 years ago on Google
Wonderful, educational experience. The guides are clearly passionate about their roles and have a wealth of knowledge about this history of Fort George and the daily lives of the people who lived there. Don't hesitate to ask your questions - you will feel informed and delighted by their answers.

This afternoon we attended the New Year’s Day levee at Navy Hall to welcome the first day of 2019. We were greeted by the Ft George Fife and drum unit of Fort George in full dress. We did a walk around this historic Fort with its various buildings and grounds. The out door skating rink, as shown in the photo was not in use due to the rains last night. You can check the Fort George web site for times the rink is available for skating. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
