This was a lovely stop in Nice, more so for the experience as a whole and not based on the amount of Matisse’s work represented within. They did have more obscure pieces of his fabric work, furnishings, and stained glass in addition to the more well-known paper cut outs. The Villa it is housed in adds to the excursion immensely, and there is a park outside to have a lovely picnic in if you come prepared. There is no parking at the building, so we just drove around until we found a space.

You get to learn about Matisse's life, experiences, travels and influences. A few wonderful examples of his art, but of course most of the really well known material is elsewhere. Entrance is not that easy to find!

Great place to visit. It was interesting to meet the art of Matisse in real life. But I expected more information about his life, about the way to his style and about the place he lived in. The museum located exactly in the house where the artist lived some time, but there wasn't much information about it. I can recommend to visit this place for once I wouldn't go directly to Nice with a goal to go to this museum📍

Beautiful peaceful surroundings and gardens, friendly museum staff, David Hockney art on display, QR codes for English speaking information on each artwork, very enjoyable visit. Bus 33 from Nice town centre.

Museum is good, but doesn't have enough character for me. It was exhibition not only for Matisse, also for Hackney... Only a few paintings of Matisse. A lot of people... The building of Museum is looking nicer from outside then from inside

It's a very small museum that showcases only a tiny bit of Matisse's work. It's a long way to go up to Cimiez to see it. However, the Picasso-Matisse temporary exhibition was very interesting to see. I especially enjoyed the photographs of the painters in their studios. It was very humanizing and humbling to see them age.

The greatest works aren't here. The museum is definitely too crowded; it lacks a wardrobe so you have to carry your rucksack with you all the time, which is quite uncomfortable. Lockers at the entrance get full very quickly, so if you have other bulky items (luggage, umbrella) you have just to drop them at the entrance and pray to God to find them again when you exit. To get there take bus #5 from the centre

It's a beautiful museum if you like Matisse. Students don't pay at all if they present their card. When I went, a lot of matisses paintings had gone to Japan for an exhibition but I was amazed at a collection of 10 or so paintings lent by a family in the villa. I had never seen these and really loved them. The shop is lovely too and you can buy posters or reprographies.

Beautiful building of the museum. Generously designed exhibition halls. The lovers of Matisse will be excited. The others will at least have a nice walk and can use a clean bathroom, which is also important. Nice and helpful staff.

Only if you are a serious Matisse fan. 10 euros per person for this sparse exhibit. Maybe go if you have the Nice museum pass. Enjoy the nearby park, ruins, and building outside for free.

I was so happy there. Amazing journey through time of the artist’s life. Tips: Don’t expect to see everything Matisse has created in his life. If you're not a fan of the work, don't waste time.

Apparently, it was Hockney-Matisse. The artworks were 35% Matisse's and 65% Hockney's. It's not worth the 10€ the adults have to pay. So if you are looking for Matisse, you won't find him there. Also, it's far away from civilization, so you better take the bus or the train.

Disappointing, the temporary exhibition was text on some walls and a few small images. The permanent exhibitions were more exciting but not the range of work I expected. I wouldn’t recommend paying or travelling to the museum.

Sehr interessante Ausstellung. Die Ausstellung an sich ist etwas kleiner als man von dem Gebäude erwartet:) Insgesamt hat uns gefallen, obwohl man ziemlich lange Schlange steht.

The museum is nice but it just doesn’t have a lot of Matisse’s art pieces, nor the best ones. It’s more about his life I guess. I don’t mind cause I went there for free so I was happy

I visited the museum with the intention to learn more about Matisse. The red villa is the main part of the museum where his biography and most of his paintings, drawings, sculptures and some personal belongings are presented. The first part right at the entrance is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, like the Tom Wesselmann's one I saw. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and it took me 2 hours and half to see and read everything, but it could be done much quicker. I should come back another time though, since the current exhibition had taken pretty much half of the museum's space, I was left wanting to see more of Matisse himself. I'm glad I managed at least to see one of his famous Blue Nudes. The museum's shop was also very nice. The villa is very pretty on the outside too and the gardens around are great for a walk or picnic.

Beautiful collections and history of Henri Matisse’s personal collections and works. Included in the Nice Museum Pass - the pass gets access to more museums than one could visit in its 3 day duration.

I have a print from this museum at home so it has been a dream of mine to pay it a visit. A beautiful location up the hill, free entry for students, and free entry to the Archeology Museum - what’s not to like? I also liked the storytelling when it came to Matisse’s travels and how that related to his artwork and creativity. The only downside is my print (Danseuse Créole) isn’t currently on display!

This is an excellent collection of Matisse's work, particularly his later collections. It is as much a history of him and his era as it is an art gallery. The entire museum is accessible for people with mobility issues. It is also bite-sized so folks won't get tired our from walking and standing. The use of video as well as print makes it more interesting and varied. You can really see how the artist's work grew and changed as he was exposed to different experiences. The archeology museum is housed on the same grounds so you can see both at the same time. The museum pass that we got at the MOMAC worked here as well. It is to Euros for 24 hours and allows you to see the best museums in Nice. I highly recommend that you add it to your Nice itinerary.

Great museum. I learned a lot about Matisse and Picasso. Other museums are included in the price of the ticket. Under 18 is free, over 18 is €10 each. Lots of amazing pieces here to see. Pictures of behind the scenes of the paintings, sketches, preworks of the artist practicing the final piece, this museum has it all.

For what it represents and the works of art on display, I think it is a must visit especially if you are interested in Provencal grand Masters. It is a small museum so you maybe disappointed if you are looking for a huge collection. But why not spend a couple of hours on the ground, snd have a coffee and just enjoy it.

(Translated by Google) Arguably, this is a place I think is more beautiful than any museum in Nice. The museum exhibition is divided into permanent and special exhibitions. You can see Matisse's last works from the beginning. If you like Matisse, we recommend visiting the house where Matisse lived until the end. We caught the Matisse Picasso exhibit in the museum and we really appreciate it. We saw many works of Matisse and Picasso that demonstrated the artists influence on one another. On the whole we thought it was a really compact and well themed museum. Of course if one would be disappointed if you hope to catch the major works of Matisse there. If you go there wanting to learn more about Matisse, i think you will find a lot of interesting stuff.

The whole villa is really stunning and the information regarding the artist and art is well written and fun to read. It’s fun to get a glimpse of how the artist goes through different eras in his work. The gift shop was a real treat with loads of posters, books and crafts!

This was one of our stops using the 4 day (4 jours) ville de Nice / musees de Nice museum pass. We loved how many pieces they had to show! The sketches were my personal favorites but of course the paintings were amazing to see in person as well. They had an exhibition on Shirley Jaffe, who I was unfamiliar with before but enjoyed experiencing. Definitely recommend making the trip out to see if you have the pass and doubling up with the musee d’archeologie. We spent ~2 hours between the two museums that day.

beautiful museum at a unique location – however I was a bit disappointed by the exhibitions. i felt like there was a lack of order / guidance, the exhibited works sometimes appeared to be in quite a random order. i expected to experience more of matisses work, his ideas and visions – sadly, i had the feeling that more than 50% of the (permanent!) exhibition consisted of works by other artists. anyway – the building is very nice and the personnel is kind and polite.

Very disappointed. Last went there 10 years ago and this time only about half the place open. Not exactly a huge amount of Matisse artworks. In fact I saw two of the bronzes in Tate Modern a few weeks ago. Was nicer sitting in the park afterwards.

  • 3/5 Anna B. 2 years ago on Google
The exhibition is surprisingly short, I was a bit disappointed by the size of the collection and that 90% of the texts are written only in French. The temporary exhibition with/on the works of the former Pierre Matisse Gallery was very interesting though. If you have time, you should definitely go for the Museum Pass for 15 EUR and see more places, it’s worth it much more. The neighborhood, the building and the park around is worth a visit.

I visited a special exhibition dedicated to Matisse in the 30s . A lot of art pieces were brought for this purpose from other museums and private collections. No regrets I vent. Some of the works I've seen for the first time. The building itself and the grounds around with antique Roman time ruins also worth visiting if you have spare time. If you are limited in time and are not particularly contemporary art researcher I would skip this place.

The Matisse Museum is free for students! It's a super cool experience that shows his process and growth through his career. I have never been to a museum like it. It was interesting seeing all the steps and sketches before making certain pieces, the only disappointment was that there was a lot of pieces like sketches that were building up to a final piece and then the final piece would not be there.
