We were so grateful to have come to this Museum. A modest yet wonderful collection & a hands-on taste of Roman History. Make sure to check out the basement level. For Anglophones there are no translations inside, but a laminated English printed guide you can borrow and follow along outside for the ruins. My Canadian-education French levels were enough to get by, with the occasional word looked up w/ my downloaded GoogleTranslate app. Highly recommend a visit if you are interested in history. A few of the indoor exhibits are interactive for little ones as well. In my opinion, it was well worth the 10€ each for us for the day pass. There is no option for paying just for one site - no matter what you’re getting the day pass with access to the other museums. I believe this would have been included in the 26€ French Riviera Côte d’Azure tourist pass as well. With our day pass we went to the Matisse museum next door, and that afternoon the Modern & Contemporary Art Museum too. Wonderful value, all included in the day pass.

Exceeded my expectations. Very informative and includes the actual excavations of the Roman baths. Very impressive and recommended. Included with the Nice museum pass that lets you visit about 10 museums all for 15€ (within a 4 day period)

I have never been to a Museum where the staff was this unfriendly! Getting shouted at to hold still when showing the Pass sanitaire when the employee doesnt know how to handle the phone, getting sold a single entrance museum ticket when asking for a museum Pass and clarifying 3 times during the process. Just getting gestured to shut up and still ended up paying double because I had to get a museum pass later on. Unacceptable behaviour for a public establishment! The museum is small, the collection is rather unimpressive and there are no englisch descriptions. Would not recommend to put a foot in here.

Be sure to bring cash in exact change to get in! In ticket office the card payments were broken and they did not have change for my 50€ note. The museum shop had a working card payment terminal, but using that for buying entrance ticket was not possible. So was not able to buy a ticket and get in.

Security staff were rude we arrived at 1710 closing time is at 1800 the security staff were talking about being too late to go in the whole downstairs was closed off and the shutters to go outside were down so we could not go look at the ruins. We had plenty of time to look everywhere if the doors were open.

I don't think this place advertises enough how kid friendly it is. It's a great place to take your kids if you're looking for an educational experience in Nice. We got a tour from a lovely Italian gentleman who showed our 8 year old all the different kids activities to do. It was a truly wonderful experience and I would do it again.

A great place to visit for extensive Roman thermal bath ruins and interesting artefacts, activities and models. As a non-native speaker, helpful summary information leaflets in English but all the actual signage, as one might expect, is in French. If you’re able to get by or are just here to see the site, clearly that’s not going to be a problem! As in a lot of places, a mix of staff are to be found, some very friendly, helpful and willing to help, others who appear to find their purpose to be one of creating difficulty, whether linguistically or practically. Of course on the language front, very possible that most tourists don’t venture up the hill to Cimiez. Between the museum and the amphitheatre just outside, though, they should!! 5 euro entry, kids free, so a great way to occupy an hour or two, right off the #5 bus. While I may not return having now visited, really glad to have been the once.

This museum is included in the €15 4-day Nice museums pass. The Roman baths to the back of the main building are great to see! Definitely one to stop into if you're going to the Matisse Museum nearby.

Suosittelen.

The staff was not very helpful. I arrived looking for the Matisse museum which was closed for the next two weeks. It was a torrential downpour outside and all I wanted to do was wait inside for my ride to pick me up. But standing and waiting inside was a security risk....so I just ended up paying 10€ just to sit down. I thought maybe it could be nice to look at some things while i waited but the museum was so disappointing. No signs in English, And only one small floor with artifacts.

Not a whole lot to see, but pretty interesting. Be sure to pick up a printed guide (available in several languages) as you exit the museum to see the ruins. Very informative and key to enjoying the ruins.

Although the place is nice the staff is terrible. There are 2 old ladies who have no idea how to use the credit card and don't speak English. I paid the tickets cash but after the visit I wanted to buy a T-shirt for my daughter. I offered to pay cash but they asked for card. I used the card contacless but it didn't work. Then I inserted the card placed the PIN but they withdrew the card before the transaction was over and said my card was bad. My husband got angry and we left but right as I was going out I got a message from the bank that my transactuon was authorized. I returned to check with the ladies and I got reprimanded like a child by them because we left suddenly without admitting that the problem was my card. They said we were rude and asked if we were Italians because they had problems with Italians. We are not Italians but these ladies are clearly biased. They claim the transaction was not made. I checked with the bank but they can't tell me until next week if the transaction was performed or not. So...managers of the museum, please teach your staff how to perform transactions with the credit card! And ask them to respect the tourists, no matter where they come from!

A nice place to get a break after partying on the beaches of France. Some additional perspective of how long this coast is settled and that you are enjoying Cote d'Azur in a very long line in which even the Romans are looking at centuries in front of them. Maybe they looked at some wooden ruins and also wandered - why would someone forsake their claim on this relaxing shoreline. Museum is lacking English.. anything. And gets a four for it and for the numerous others like it. The Roman bathhouse was something else though. Must have been a lot of action, politics, ancient drama and self-reflection over there along with the nearby Arena.

Amazing site nestled in bustling Nice. Really gives a perspective on civilization and where we've been before, how humans enjoyed leisure time. The museum inside has artifacts with explanations all in French. They were beautiful to imagine in use while piecing together an understanding just from the words I know.

Interesting collection inside, but certainly no more than the archaeological site outside. The ruins that make up the field make us feel in Antiquity at the same time as the contemporary sculptures with its strong colors remind us that we are living our own time. It is worth the visit. Long wait to get in, as it is the same line for visitors purchasing ticket or those having already purchased one at the Matisse museum. One staff member working to validate tickets while the other is watching the line getting bigger. Staff member missed opportunity to show visitors they are welcome, and get up from chair, grab the barcode scanner and invite those with already purchased tickets to get theirs validated.

Would have been much better with english description for tourist to learn about the story behind the ruins

  • 4/5 Jeff M. 6 years ago on Google
We had an excellent experience here - it's a small, local museum but the ruins are interesting, well documented (English notes are near the door as you go out to tour the site) and in our case we had a really fantastic, child friendly, experience with the temporary exhibition on the lower floor. The permanent exhibition is small, but as an an initial introduction to Roman ruins; as it was for us; well executed and relatable for our children. Not the Paris or London museum of natural history but great for what it is.

  • 4/5 Mike N. 6 years ago on Google
Really nice little museum. The exhibits inside don't have any english translations but still nice to see. There are English tour books as you go outside to the ruins which are themselves really interesting to see! (Great price at €10 entry for the day ticket which gives access to all the museum in the city so cheaper the more you do!)

(Translated by Google) The National Archeology Museum is an important museum of French archeology, covering the prehistoric period to the Merovingian period. Located at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the department of Yvelines, about 19 kilometers west of Paris, the visitor gets acquainted successively with the Paleolithic and Neolithic cultures of Africa (Maghreb, South Africa , Ethiopia, Benin, Congo, Ivory Coast, Zaire, etc.), then at the birth of civilizations of the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East (pre-dynastic Egypt, ancient Susa, Bulgarian Thrace). Then he can compare the development and technical mastery of bronze and iron metallurgists in the Caucasus and Europe (objects from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Azerbaijan, North Ossetia, etc. .). From one continent to another and sometimes at different times, the exhibitions show a similar state of development (passage from hunter-gatherer to producer), use of the same technique (Exploitation of flint or obsidian) or, on the contrary, very different forms or parameters (Asia-America comparison, made possible by objects from China, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia, Peru, Greenland, North America, etc.).

Fun little museum. Nothing spectacular but interesting to see. As with all archeological sites, it’s mostly stones, so you depend on the descriptions and pictures for context. These are quite limited and All text is in French only. Bit of a missed opportunity, more potential to this site / museum.
