To begin with, there was only one waiter for the entire restaurant and he was very busy to take our order. In the end, we just stopped him on the move. We asked to replace our double pork and chicken kebab with chicken and beef. The waiter said that he would have to pay a little more for beef as it is more expensive. No problem. Later he brought us an extra dish that we didn't order. But we took it because we didn't know what what we ordered looked like, after which we saw it in our receipt too. The waiter brought us two different dishes with beef and chicken, after which we saw two different prices in the receipt, although we ordered one large dish. We explained his mistake to the waiter, but he said that there was no mistake and we had to pay for all the dishes. We were already willing to pay for everything, but they didn't pick up our check for 15 minutes because they called the boss. As a result, they gave us a discount of a couple of dollars and it was still much more expensive than what we ordered. And at the end they added tips, although the menu said that tips are added automatically only to a group of six (there were two of us). The waiter said that it is a rule of the restaurant to take tips from each table. Then you should change the menu. We were ready to leave more tips, but due to rudeness and mistakes, we changed our mind. The food was delicious, we would have eaten more often, but after this incident I don't think we will come back. A sad experience.

The food was excellent, but I was very dissatisfied with the service. Although the waitress was pleasant when speaking with us, she never refreshed our water glasses; the time it took to receive all our entrees spanned over 20 minutes, from first dish to last dish, therefore those of us that got our food first were eating cold food. We sat outside on the patio, and were surprised that other patrons were smoking around us, which is not allowed under the Des Plaines ordinance. We voiced our concern to the manager, who apologized and gave us a discount on the bill, but said that's part of the European culture of his customers. Very disappointing, we probably won't be back.

Mehanata is a good Bulgarian restaurant that boasts ethnic decor and serves a variety of Bulgarian dishes. I must highlight that their presentation appears more homemade and traditional than that of a typical restaurant. During our visit, we tried their cold soup "Tarator", salad "Shopska" and Combo Shashlik. I enjoyed the presentation of the shashlik on skewers, and the meat was juicy and tender.

Came here on a Sunday for dinner. Ended up outside due to a very rowdy 50th birthday inside with dancing and a DJ. Loved the patio minus the noisy muffler-free cars zooming by nonstop. Our server was attentive and helpful. And we really appreciated the fact that the menu includes pictures of every dish! Super helpful if you're not familiar with this cuisine. The food was hit or miss. Some were extremely delicious while others lacked flavor. Ask about the favorites and stick with those. Overall, we would visit again!

My wife and I had our first dining experience Bulgarian style. OMGOODNESS... what a wonderful restaurant. The atmosphere was bustling and the experience was phenomenal. Top notch staff and tantalizing food. You will love this place.

Fantastic experience. First time having Bulgarian food and it didn't disappoint. Colleague and I had a business dinner and it was excellent. Combo Shashlik, spicy goat cheese, chicken thighs, traditional shopska salad, and fig pie for dessert was off the chart.

Food is good and the menu is really big so you have plenty of options. This was my first time trying Bulgarian food so I went with the safe choice (chicken) but I'll definitely come back to try some of the other dishes.

We came in with 4 people on a Thursday night. Super friendly staff and our pick of tables, although there were several filled with diners having aninated conversations. The heavy wood furniture and dark interior make you feel contained and cozy - there is a projector with low volume sports running on one wall. Our waiter was very helpful and had some funny (well practiced) waiter jokes. The menu is ten pages with photos and dish names in cyrillic, with English translations. I suggest ordering multiples plates and eating family style to get to try more of what they offer. A few tables nearby did this and we did as well, at first not wanting to commit to an unfamilar dish... but after the apps wanting to trt a bit of everything. We had a tomato and goat cheese dish (forgot to take a picture) that the waiter drizzled in olive oil and pepper - creamy and bright and very tasty. We had potato croquettes with dill yogurt and fritters with berry jam - excellent little apps to share. Then we ordered "chips" - hand sliced potato fried and topped with chopped garlic and herbs, next to the meat tray for 2 - coiled homemade sausages, pork, chicken kebabs... delightful. Very flavorful and moist meat and the bit of fries on the edge of the platter were quite good too. We all shared a slice of fig and marscapone cake and divvied up leftovers. Best part: VERY welcoming Chicago prices at about $40 per person with tip. Give this place a try. Park in the auto repair lot / liquor store lot next door, but don't park directly in front of the liquor store. Also there is a sign near the yellow awning that says certain spots in the strip mall lot are OK for Mehanata parking.

It's an authentic Bulgarian restaurant with a wide range of dishes and a nice atmosphere of Eastern Europe with a fare that belongs to that region too. It's worth stopping by and trying their food. I wish I lived closer to be able to visit them more often. Totally recommend to everyone.

Omg I’m in love with this place, the food is just perfect and they are so nice ! Of course we over ordered but it’s good for to go as well The waitress was very nice and knowledgeable about every single dish on the menu which we love because my boyfriend use to ask the waitresses what he can get! I love the outside area was so breathable especially when is July and you’re coming from Florida😅 Cleaned restrooms and shiny silverware

My mother and I have been coming here for years!! Every chance we get for a birthday or holiday we are sure to bring all our friends. The food is delicious, management and service are all lovely and it's always a fun time when we host a party there.

As someone who has no experience with Bulgarian food, let me tell you. The inside is so pretty! Our waiter was so nice. We brought in a cake and he gladly cut it up for us after our dinner. We ordered the salad with the cucumbers and tomatoes and cheese. Omg so good! The cheesy bites with the blueberry jam, delicious and my favorite! The yogurt with idk what….delicious lol. The chicken shish kabob and the Bulgarian sausage was so good!

This place is awesome. Shashlik was GREAT! Ask about their Bulgarian Plum Brandy and Grape Brandy (grape brandy is close to Georgian Chacha). Great service too!

Busy spot with locals. Our experience was disappointing: chicken “tenders” (tough), oily grilled zucchini, chicken soup had not much flavor, and on the grilled chicken platter the white meat was dry and chewy. The bean salad and ice cream were the best menu items on our visit. No complimentary dessert for the birthday girl. :-( Service didn’t impress. Cute setting: see pics! $30 per person including tax and tip — but excluding drinks. Needs work! Cannot recommend.

Oh my!!! The chicken soup was out of this world 🤩🤩😋. We had also cucumber and tomatoes salad, also great, and grilled chicken. All fresh and wonderful. Great serving and ..what is so outstanding, is their interior vibe and classic home traditional decoration. Feel really cozy and warm 🥰 Recommend for a nice date :)
