Panorama of the Battle of Waterloo

Historical landmark

👍👍 Very Nice museum about Napoleons and the battle at Waterloo. Expect a very well designed museum, unfriendly staff and a very nice restaurant (with nice staff members). Excellent views from the mountain and a somewhat dated panorama. Ask for a discount and you get a discount. People often mention museum, battle, Waterloo, visit, Lion,

A wonderful historic place, where one of the most decisive battles in the history of the 18th century took place. Waterloo a place and date to remember. A majestic place to enjoy while in Belgium.

I visited before 35 years ago the panorama is still there and is a relic by itself. They created an underground museum. Definitely worth a visit when in Belgium. Very informative. They also had live enactments going on that seemed very fun.

Quite an interesting piece. Its like a circular tent with paintings and installations of battlefield all around.

Amazing and quite realistic experience of the battle. I really loved it and found it very interesting to go with kids and give them a more concrete knowledge of History.

The Lion's Mound (French: Butte du Lion, lit. "Lion's Hillock/Knoll"; Dutch: Leeuw van Waterloo, lit. "Lion of Waterloo") is a large conical artificial hill located in the municipality of Braine-l'Alleud (Dutch: Eigenbrakel), Belgium. King William I of the Netherlands ordered its construction in 1820, and it was completed in 1826. It commemorates the location on the battlefield of Waterloo where a musket ball hit the shoulder of William II of the Netherlands (the Prince of Orange) and knocked him from his horse during the battle. It is also a memorial of the Battle of Quatre Bras, which had been fought two days earlier, on 16 June 1815. The hill offers a vista of the battlefield, and is the anchor point of the associated museums and taverns in the surrounding Lion's Hamlet (French: le Hameau du Lion; Dutch: Gehucht met de Leeuw).Visitors who pay a fee may climb up the Mound's 225 steps, which lead to the statue and its surrounding overlook.

The museum has a lot of content, the end to end story doesn't work in though unless you have a lot of time to read & listen to everything. It needs some quick version boards. The audio guide uses your phone, so make sure you have a charged battery and are able to cope with WiFi networks which drop out so you need to restart the application a few times on the way round. - I'm sure it saves them money but it would be a much slicker experience with a dedicated device that just works.

I came to this site on a school trip over 40 years ago. I was fascinated by the Panorama, the still picture & model people & horses.... unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have been updated in all those years. However, the new addition to the site displays of uniforms & the 4d film was fantastic. As you can imagine, with 4d technology, you can become very immersed with the video footage and actually feel far more involved than the display in the panorama. The walk of 226 steps to the top of the lions mound gives a great view over the area of the Waterloo battle, a stunning view of the now peaceful countryside, keep your eyes open for the kestrals that hover below you're elevation when at the top. Note: Take heed of the warning regarding the climb up. It is strenuous and steps only wide enough for 1 person at a time, so don't feel pressured if someone else stands at the top, take it in your timeframe. Likewise, if you're the one at the top, have patience. There were also a couple of guys dressed up in the Napoleon army uniform, playing the flute & interacting with visitors. There are also 30 min, educational segments, eg, schooling, surgery of the time on the battlefield & a setting off a canon demonstration. 23 euros per adult, at the time of writing this.

Fantastic mural of over 100 meters entirely circling a large building. We’ll worth a visit along with the Lion’s Mound.

What a painting! Awesome detail! As it's included in the entrance fee it's definitely worth a visit.

We were passing and thought we should go! It was a great place to visit! I would have been disappointed however if I was travelling hundreds of miles just to visit.

We just wanted to visit the memorial, but in order to do this you have to buy a ticket for the museum next to it which costs almost 20 euro!

Awesome experience. Hard to believe people could create a painting so big and maintain that level of spatial awareness. Some restoration work taking place right now. 5-9-2022

Call me a fool but, I love this kind of stuff. The museum is interesting especially since they had to make do with most of the relics being appropriated from other people but just being at he location of such a pivotal place in human history well... Don't miss it and bring the kids and a picnic too.

Super interesting museum. Pricey though.. There were demonstration of guns and canon that day, so that was worth it.
