Great flavors, service and atmosphere. Michelin star well deserved. Atmosphere: there was live piano and singer serenading the scene. Ask for a window seat and you can view the democracy monument while eating. Service: waiters and waitresses were in uniform or Thai costume. They quickly filled our glasses with water as quickly as we drink them and were attentive throughout. Flavors: ordered the spicy salad, crispy noodle and crab curry as recommended in the Michelin guide. All were delicious although not extremely memorable yet still deserving of the five stars

Our visit was rather disappointing. We wanted to visit a Michelin star restaurant to test some of the best Thai cuisine. Unfortunately, this is not happening there. I'm really curious about what they got the star for. The food is not bad and definitely you'll not make a mistake by eating here. Just don't expect something great and I think it's better for casual dining rather than special occasions. Crispy noodles are interesting but nothing you'd write home about. The service is poor. I'd expect some recommendations, description of the food from a waiter. Here you'll just order, get the meal and pay almost without a word. They brought the meals in strange order - at first one main dish, then appetizers and finally the second main. The place was nice, there was live music during our stay. Overall kind of a bad experience, but caused mostly because of the high expectations. I'm giving 3 stars just because it was inexpensive, okish food.

All dishes are good. The way people treat restaurant staff is, I think, a kind of poker tell, revealing a person's character.

We went to try this Michelin star restaurant in Bangkok with some friends and the food was really good. This restaurant is quite old and it focused on traditional Thai cooking. We had the staple Thai foods such as the fish, seafood, Pineapple fried rice to name a few. They were all very flavourful. We loved every dish we ordered. Price wise, this is considered affordable as well for Michelin standard. It's worth a visit for sure.

The quality of food was good, though not exceptional. That said, they definitely stayed true to Thai flavors and cooking methods and nailed them. Great balance of sour, sweet, spicy, salty in general. I particularly enjoyed the eggplant salad with shrimp.

The spicy and sweet fried noodles did not taste that great. I really enjoyed the fried rice and the desert. The red crab curry had great flavor but was very spicy.

We took my wife on Mother's Day. We had a very nice time. My wife and daughter complimented the traditional Thai food. The service was impeccable. The restaurant has been here for many years. It is definitely old Thai style decor .

Very good food and great atmosphere. At lunch time, there is a live music show, usually old thai songs. Awarded Michellin for many years. Would recommend for everyone!!

We came here on a Saturday afternoon, i was told this is one of the best restaurant in Bangkok well loved by many locals, the place itself feels vintage and there was an oldie singer and pianist playing live there too, i was told that the ex head-chef used to serve the royalty, i had high expectations for this place.. i was blown away everything i ordered was cooked carefully and everything was incredibly delicious and have depths of flavor from something as simple as egg plant stir fry or fried rice , it can turn into an incredible dish.. i would definitely be back and recommend anyone to eat here and give it a go yourself

It is one of the oldest established restaurants in Thailand since 1957, but it's not your typical Michelin star restaurant. Service was lacking. Some tables received paper napkins and some had linens. The atmosphere was pleasant with live music. (But it could be annoying if you're a foreigner not understanding the music/lyrics at times). Food was on point, delicious and authentic. (Not if you're used to foreign Thai food and call it authentic). At one point, the live band was playing, "What a wonderful world." And at that moment, pure bliss! Good food, good atmosphere, better company. What else can you ask for? I hope if you're reading this, you have a blissful day! 😀🌻🙏

Very delicious and authentic Thai restaurant. The decor has a high class vibe but with reasonable prices. The whole front has a lovely view of the monument outside. Service is swift and friendly. We had several appetisers including their classic fish cakes, pork satay, and grilled pork. For main we had the green curry, steamed fish, omelette (my favourite Thai dish), glass noodle, eggplant, bitter greens. None of the dishes were particularly amazing but the quality and taste were good across the board. So for a solid Thai food experience, I highly recommend.

My tour guide said this was Michelin star authentic Thai, and it lives up to the bill! I had the appetizer combo and it was all amazing, I only passed on some meat/pork thing. I also had a delicious soup with veggies and seafood. Everything was presented beautifully. They had a live singer and musician at lunchtime.

Nice location: it’s difficult to find such a big fancy restaurant in the old town, unless it’s opening for a long time. Since this restaurant is ‘since 1957’ no wonder. Food: nice Thai food with good taste. Some of the food is not easy seen in the other restaurant. Not sure if the basil spaghetti was invented here, which is one of the best combination with Thai and western food. This restaurant wins Michelin 1 star since 2019 till now 2022. Worth visiting with the taste of history.

The restaurant offers free parking at the back. The service is mediocre, not bad. The food is served promptly, but I personally don't like the taste. Some dishes, like garlic fish, are overly salty, and the pandan-wrapped chicken is dry and tough. Other dishes have an average taste, and the prices are quite high compared to the quality and quantity. The outdoor view includes a clear sight of the Democracy Monument, but a parking bus blocks it, and it's unclear how the restaurant handles this. Additionally, a tour group causing loud disturbances near the entrance indicates that the restaurant's management needs improvement.

Highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for Authentic Thai Cuisine. Food was absolutely delicious. Atmosphere and live music was brilliant. However, from my experience the service was very poor. They were not attentive as they should. Overall, I still have a good time and will come back again.

Compared to the other meals we’ve had in Bangkok, I struggle to understand what the Michelin star is based on. All the dishes tasted bland/below average for Bangkok. We had 5 dishes so enough to garner an average on taste/quality. I don’t think my taste buds enjoyed any of them. There are far better Thai restaurants in Bangkok. Food aside, I really disliked the cheesy live singing (not traditional Thai singing) with the out of tune piano. Overall, very disappointing. Two stars as the food was edible. Would not recommend.

Methavalai Sorndaeng fully lives up to its reputation. The food is simply incredible, and some of the best we've ever had! The crab curry was our personal highlight, and so good we came back the next day for more. Prices are more than reasonable, especially for a Michelin Star restaurant. In total, we paid around 4.2k Baht or around $30 USD per person. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth the visit.

Long standing Thai restaurant with old time vibes. A singer and a pianist will keep you entertained during your meal. The food is authentic Thai but price is on a high side.

Our family has been coming here since I was young. It’s not a pricey place, but when you dine here, the atmosphere feels like you’re at a high-end restaurant but with a 80s/90s vibe. There’s live music if you don’t mind listening to songs from your dad’s and grandpa’s periods. All the dishes here are great. I particularly love their drunken chicken (ไก่แช่เหล้า - they used white meat) and red curry (แกงป่า).

Tourist food… Small portion, not spicy, slightly cold. The spices are very nice actually. Nice place to host foreigners. There’s live music and it’s comfy. I would still return even tho it’s touristy. Service could be better, they are rather cold / uninviting.

Visited on 8 December 2023. Ordered the crispy rice noodles in sweet and sour sauce (vegetarian). The first 2-3 mouths were good but soon it became cloyingly sweet and I left 2/3 of the noodles untouched. To be fair, I was quite full from breakfast and hence only ordered this as a main. Please don’t…this should be shared. Coconut juice was all right. Overall, this place was old school. Would I return? Most probably not. There are so many cool Bangkok eating places. This is definitely not on the top of my list.

Just ok, service was on top of us to start then disappeared as the meal went on. Not a fan of plastic water bottles at the table thought this was supposed to be a Michelin caliber restaurant? I've had better meals elsewhere. I was left satisfied with everything I ate except not having knives and pieces of food too large that required cutting. Probably won't come back and won't send my friends here. Duck was good 👍

Pretty crowded on weekend. Advance booking is recommended. If you're on low sodium, try to tell them to have less salt or fish sauce in most dishes. The waiter had great service with attention to our concern. Live performance starts from 12-2pm. It's really worth the enjoyment of oldies.

Delightful experience and delicious food. The Oyster Chinese Kale is nicely done, leaving it crunchy and looking green and yummy. Crab curry goes well with rice, and the meat is fresh. The live band and singing provided an entertaining setting

Amazing place. Well deserved star, but don't expect a tasting menu. More of a sharing experience and completely authentic well made Thai food. You can tell this is the place where middle upper class families do Sunday lunch or go for grandma's bday 😂 and that's part of the appeal!

Among all the Thai food that I have eaten, I am proud to say that this is the best one that I had by far. The dishes are simple yet cooked so perfectly. Ordered my usual fare of basil pork, Tom yum shrimp soup and fried cabbage with fish sauce. Everything was so delicious, there’s nothing to fault. We finished off the meal with 2 desserts - red ruby and mango sticky rice. I think the red ruby can be skipped but the mango sticky rice is a MUST order. Overall, service was attentive and efficient. It’s a must visit place!

We were happy to be able to experience this restaurant and had a good meal. Staff is helpful and attentive. The restaurant is mostly clean. Large menu with lots of options. The Tom Yum Soup, Appetizer Plate A & Pineapple Fried Rice (minus the generous helping of meat floss) were delicious. The other dishes we had were all good but not out of this world. Prices were very reasonable for a Michelin Star restaurant.

Food was underwhelming at best. On the waiter’s recommendation, we ordered an app plate, prawns in curry, papaya salad with soft shell crabs, and grouper. The grouper was over cooked and dry while the papaya salad was under marinated. The prawns were the highlight, but the cook on them was somehow variable. Service was a little cold and the live music a touch loud. Didn’t have cocktails and our overall impression was that Methavalai Sorndaeng didn’t have the magic street food and typical Michelin starred restaurants have.

I didn't know the reputation of this restaurant prior to dining. My son and family took me out for traditional Thai meal. Atmosphere, location, staff all 1st rate. We had a large group and tried several dishes, very balanced flavours, Thai food can overpower with heat leaving you wondering what it actually tasted like. This was perfect fresh well prepared dishes so thankful for the experience and looking forward to returning.

Probably one of the few remaining classic establishments (having served the high society if Thailand for decades from royalty through politicians and millionaires) that have not decided to start robbing their customers post-michelin with price hikes - still very affordable for the masses. Right next to the Democracy Monument - authentic taste, quick and high quality service, your food will arrive in quick succession, served by waiters in full uniform with live music during dinner time. Menus here are quite extensive, from Royal Thai Cuisine with Sino-Thai menu items. Stick to the 'recommended dish' symbol in the menu and you're good.

We came by and chose this restaurant becoz of its Michelin star and the foods were beautifully presented in the pictures. It offers Thai authentic foods in the Thai decorated room with Thai old music. However, the taste was okay, not as pleasant as how it looked. We didn't taste and feel any shrimp/prawn in the crispy tartlets, that let us down. The spicy salad was too sour 🤣😫. We liked the crispy fish in chili paste though, it was the best among other dishes we had today.

The taste is excellent! I was so impressive with the green curry with beef. Beyond my expectation, the beef is soft and juicy. The taste of Thai spice is well done with the meat. I would recommend any tourists to visit this restaurant if you want to experience an authentic Thai food. Please visit this restaurant.

Those who say that the restaurant is too old or not modern enough do not appreciate the tremendous legacy behind this restaurant. It’s a pretty solid place with exquisitely delicious food, everything is still memorable after the meal. Nothing disappointed. Sorndaeng serves “Chaowang” cuisine with some Isaan dishes (i.e. Larb and Somtum), and basic Thai desserts. When you eat here you feel like all the dishes have been mastered: it deserves it’s Michelin star. On a Saturday afternoon at one PM the restaurant has a lively atmosphere with cheery patrons. In the background, blissful singing from a piano and voice duet. The waiters here are well dressed and approachable (it feels like they are honored by their jobs). The pinnacle of the experience is the view. It’s the Democracy statue in all of it’s glory. The arches protruded like large giants and the gold paint shimmered. Four of us with desserts ran for ~3,200 baht: fair enough given it’s one-star rating, the live music, expertly crew and the impeccable food. Keep in mind that down the road people are buying thousand baht omelettes from Jay Fai and mysteriously not complaining about that. We were stuffed to the brim and could have spent 500 baht less… Will come back.

We’ve been here on 25th of December 2021 and this was poor. The service was really bad, we ordered soup, shrimps, salad and rice, and they forgot about rice at all, but include in bill. Dishes was brought slowly. But the flavour was good. Better visit another restaurant than that.

  • 5/5 Minh L. 2 years ago on Google
I personally love the decoration of the restaurant. The old school, majestic, Asian-meet-European matching tables and chairs, waiters in hotel uniform, nicely folded napkins… sure add up to the 80s Asian-wedding-venue-ish vibe, but it feels intentional and works well with their classic offerings on the menu. They have many traditional Thai dishes that were too old schooled to be found easily these days even in Thailand. Although the price is a bit high, it does match the quality of the meal. Besides, they have smaller portion so guests can compile a meals with different dishes to try. We were very happy with the foods and would love to come back again to try other dishes.

  • 4/5 Ryan N. 2 years ago on Google
Certainly good, but not particularly overwhelming. Prices are very affordable for a Michelin star restaurant, with most small portions available around 250THB. Tom Yum Goong: river prawn was large and fresh, perfectly firm. Soup itself wasn't really outstanding; essentially the same as streetside vendors. Duck curry: curry sauce itself was quite good, but the duck was really lean and felt a little dry. I've had better in Canada (!) although it's surprisingly cheaper here. Shrimp and eggplant salad: honestly the standout highlight of the meal. Thai eggplant was sweet and tender, and worked well with the shallots, onions, and chilis. Shrimp was cooked well and quite large. Mango sticky rice: underwhelming at best. Mango wasn't that sweet, and the sticky rice tasted kind of stale. Overall experience: decent for the price, but very much just a fancier Thai restaurant with a star rather than something outstanding or worth going out of your way for. Service and environment were standard for fine dining.

This restaurant brings you back to Bangkok of the 1960s! Traditional Thai food that is unadulterated and bereft of western tweaking. Everything i ordered was great. If some haute restaurants give a play with your multiple senses like mind, emotion and visual perfection, Methavalai brings the satisfaction straight to your tummy like how grandmothers and family dinners do. Plus, you can hear the Aunties of Bangkok sing live!

Had a great time trying various michelin star dishes. The food was delicious. The staff were very nice and knowledgeable. They were helpful in selecting dishes that worked well for us. It closed quite early with last orders permitted up to 9:30pm

Every time I bring my friends and family to Sorndaeng, I always hear them commenting on how lovely the food is and I agree with them completely. What makes this restaurant special is the selection of highest quality ingredients and “traditional” Thai taste in each dish. It’s hard to say which dishes are my favorite because of the reasons above, but I can guarantee that you will have a pleasant meal in every dish that you choose.
