Did the Fremantle Prison Torchlight Tour. Highly recommend. Our guide was fantastic in educating and keeping the group engaged. Lots of interesting facts and anecdotes. There are a few pleasant surprises along. They provide each guest a torch for the journey which you get to keep as a souvenir.

There are 4 guided tours available, suggest for visitors to take a look at the website for details of which ones to go for. Each tour can take 1.25hrs to 2.5hrs. The guides were really amazing and knowledgeable. They told many funny and memorable stories about the history of Fremantle and the prison, the convicts, how they got shipped here, lived and rioted. Those without tics can view some galleries near the gate, but cannot enter the prison.

My family absolutely enjoyed the behind bars tour. This tour is suitable for those with young children and those with mobility issues as there were no stairs to climb. The sharing of the history of the place and her personal stories made the tour great for everyone. The stories she shared captivated even my children. Walking through the prison cells, kitchen, gallows and yard took us back a moment in time. For kids who love to solve puzzles, there is a crossword puzzle sheet you can buy at the Gift shop. The answers to the puzzle can be found as you explore the prison and the information center. Some of the answers are from the stories that is shared by the guides as well. To enjoy the puzzle hunt remember to take away the smartphone from the kids so they cannot google the answers. I love the part where there was the actual sounds of the kitchen in action from the speakers. They activate the moment you enter the kitchen. It is sad to hear that children as young as 8 to 9 years old were also sent to this prison. To me it is a must go to learn more about the history of Perth. There is much more to learn here as compared to going to theme parks in my opinion.

It was such a fantastic way to spend a day we did the behind the bars tour and the convict tour. Each tour gave a different perspective of the prison, and we heard stories of prisoners' everyday life and some unique prisoners who made history in another way. Definitely check it out if going to Fremantle and do as many tours as you can if you are into dark history. I can't wait to go back and do the tunnels and true crime tour. The only downer is you should pack some food because the cafe doesn't serve much and the tours run over an hour each it's hungry work.

Tunnel tour is top notch. We had a pretty interesting group, so that made it a bit more fun. They could do with more shade here, It'd be nice if they planted some trees, even just in large planter boxes. The Cafe had a decent range of vegetarian food, which was surprising. They even had better selection than most of the cafes in Fremantle. Good work. I'd highly recommend doing the tunnel tour, and do it now before all the water drys up!

Fantastic tour!! Wow what a great day. We came here on the spur of the moment and loved it. We were able to book a tour without pre booking which was so handy. We booked the "Behind Bars" which covered the history of the jail. Our tour guide James was amazing 👏 Such an informative and knowledgeable tour guide with a great personality. James knew how to keep us interested and his jail trivia was fascinating. Thanks James!! 😊 Free parts are available for viewing by the public including the art gallery. The art is contributed by current inmates of WA. Highly recommend giving the jail a visit and doing a tour.

If you love history , then this Prison is the place to visit. I enjoyed it better than the markets. Took a basic tour for $22 and loved all the info. Thank you Jane for all the info. Was taken to the gallows and good photo opportunities for memories. Can't imagine being sentenced in the late 1800's or early 1900's. So cold inside.

A lovely family friendly attraction to visit while you’re in Fremantle. They run multiple tours which don’t overlap much with each other; we did the true crime tour which we found very interesting. Our guide Debbie was very knowledgeable and kept us engaged with many interesting real life stories. We got to see the inside of some cells and got to go into a gun tower as well, although if you want to see more of that kind of things you’ll have to do the behind bars tour. Highly recommend whether you’re a tourist, or a local looking for something fun and educational at the same time.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Prison doing 3 tours of the facility. (The best one was the prisoner tour but the True Crime and Convict tours were also informative.) The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. A great insight into the WA convict and prison system.

A really fascinating piece of WA and Australian history from colonial to modern times. Beautifully preserved (only stopped operating as a prison in 1991) and staffed by enthusiastic and friendly people with an amazing wealth of knowledge about the place. Some real characters among the tour guides. One or two should definitely be on stage. A great testament to its popularity is the amazing numbers on all the tours* I've been on in the last three days - even at the start of a wild, wet, windy winter. * I highly recommend the three-tour deal to get a well-rounded understanding of the prison from colonial to modern times, as well as a crash course in some of the more infamous residents. Superb place. Great value.

What a wonderful day we had at Fremantle Prison. We had never been before a d decided to check it out. My 7 year old son absolutely loved it which was fantastic. He actually stood there and listened to the tour guide. Our incredible guide was so informative, funny and really made the tour for us. We can't wait to go back to do the other tours. We had a choice between 2 tours with my son but there were so many more if you had older children or are an adult. It was really a great day out and we look forward to going back. The price was really great too.

I don't have enough words to describe what I felt here, was very intrigued to know the history. Completed convict tour and torchlight tour, both were really good, very well presented with thorough guidance, funny, humour and laughter. Specially, torchlight tour was presented with art, at times acted by prison officer, convict actor, and convict murderer-women, how their criminal profile looked like and behaviour and mainly if someone lived in dark cells for 3 to 6 months without any sunlights, what can happen to mental health. Beautifully presented by such talented actors. Going to do tunnels next week.....

Good experience whilst in Freemantle. A number of tours available all with a different flavour. They cover from convict times to more recent times on different tours. Was a hot day during our tour but guides are very aware of that and knowledgeable and make it both informative and aware of the group dynamics. Well worth a visit.

Went on Behind Bars Tour. Excellent commentaries and enjoyed it very much. We went on this tour because it mentioned being 100% wheelchair accessible but it isnt. I would say 95% only as we still have to maneuvere on tiny steps and uneven surfaces. Still, staffs were helpful and it was a fun day!

A great visit. Our guide, Ben is amazing. Sharing his wealth of knowledge on the place, he kindly offered us to use the buckets to ease ourself. The prison holds alot of stories hidden between the walls all these years. Hopefully it is being conserved for years to come.

3 of us went on the torchlight tour on a Friday night. My partner and son found it interesting but I had been on the day tour a couple of years earlier so was hoping the night time tour was going to be scary. It wasn't scary at all for me so I was a bit disappointed. The guide was very good and animated and told some good stories. You get a little torch which you get to keep and there is a gift shop if you want a souvenir. Try to get there early so you can check out the other areas with interesting stuff in them and yes you can take photos and videos!

A really fascinating place to visit. Learning about how it was built and how the prisoners were living and the number of stories just keeps you wondering. A great place for history lovers. They have different types of tickets available for day tours and night tours. It's best to buy the tickets in advance especially if visiting on weekends. A must visit and is suitable for all ages.

This place is AMAZING, so full of history and very knowledgeable tour guides. My 10 and 11 year old daughters and myself had a fantastic time on the 8.45pm torchlight tour tonight ( 9/12/2022 ) the only downside is some negative Nancies wrote a letter/complained about the dummy falling from above and they had to get rid of it. I was really looking forward to that part, it was always my favourite part. I can't wait to come back.

Fascinating landmark prison in the heart of Fremantle. This World Heritage site has a lot to offer with different tours available on the hour at reasonable prices. Tours include the convict era, behind-bars, true crime, tunnels and night tours. Each tour goes for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and it is certainly worth your time. The tour guides will tell you interesting stories about both the prison ground and the prisoners. Having done the true crime tour, it was great to learn of the fascinating stories of the men and women that have done time behind these walls. True stories on how they lived, the crimes they committed and the times they tried to (or did) escape were an unforgettable experience.

I don't take many tours, they're not my thing, but I made an exception for this one and was not disappointed. We took the tunnels tour and our guide was good--knowledgable and entertaining--and the experience of going through the tunnels was fascinating. You descend 60 feet by ladder (harnessed to it) then walk through, stooping where the ceiling is low. You eventually get to boats and complete the trip in water. We really enjoyed it.

Incredible tour. The history of this place is very interesting and our guide (Ian) was wonderful, leading us through all aspects of the prison. We did the Behind Bars tour which was the history of the prison, a look at all of the blocks, kitchen and prison yard. Highly recommend.

The tunnel tour was amazing! It was thrilling, exciting and fun. The tour guides were so friendly and funny, made the whole experience great. You need to climb a vertical ladder 17 metres done and back up, so a reasonable level of fitness and confidence is needed.

Visited Fremantle Prison as part of the after dark torchlight tour. One of the best activity we did as a family. The prison is well preserved and the staff are very lovely. The whole tour is meticulously organized and the host knows how to build an engaging story of prisons past. Stay alert for the suspense appearance of other staff acting as past prisoners - and this kept us alert & on our toes. Hands down the best tour we had of the prison. Do book tickets in advance as they get sold out fast. The tour last for 1.5hrs so be prepared to walk. Be aware that some of stories paint a depressing past - but the host gives ample warning when such events are narrated. They also had prison exhibits on display including beautiful artwork dome by prisoners, the dress the wore, stories of some prisoners etc If you visit Perth and fremantle, do not miss this tour!

Super exciting place to visit. The history of this prison was so interesting thanks to our guide Karl. Top marks on the tour mate! We went on the Convict tour which is one of three you can do. This tour focuses more on the earlier days of the prison (1850s) and the settlers who came over. You see the cells of the inmates, prison yard, chapel and hear the fascinating stories of escapees of the years. Really recommend the tour!

This is a great place to visit with a number of tour options. The Convict Prison tour was fascinating. Our guide Ian had so many fascinating stories to share. The torchlight tour with Marni was great too, but not for people who like to be surprised…. In the dark…. In a prison…. Surrounded by strangers 😜 Give yourself time to view the exhibits too they are well worth a look.

If you love love true crime and documentaries, this is a must see place! There are 5 tours - we ended up going to 2 tours - history and being the bars tours. It was amazing. We were immersed into the unique stories of inmates, beautiful drawings displayed on cell walls, their lives behind bars. Unfortunately due to time constraint, we couldn't go to other 3 tours (each tour started at specific times and approx 1.5 hours) .

Go visit it if you're a history or architectural enthusiast. Staff are passionate and helpful. Highly recommend the tours to get the most of your visit, the tours are not wheelchair friendly unfortunately. The staff are fully invested and knowledgeable. We bought tickets on the day at the start of the season. One of the tour options was cancelled but there were other themes leaving regularly. A 15min slow walk up the hill from the markets but there was plenty of car parking spaces if you drive. There is a cafe and gift shop on site.

This prison is full of history which has been well documented. It's definitely worth a visit once you're in Fremantle. Did 4 tours and thoroughly enjoyed them all. The past history of this place is very interesting and well worth the visit. The staff were excellent and all very different in their approach. The most disappointing thing is that they don't accept Veterans Cards as a concession. I've never had this rejected anywhere else in my travels. So definitely something they should address.

Did a convict tour of Fremantle Prison today. Loved it!! Amazing to learn so much about the building and surrounds from the beginning to basically the end. Also super in depth stories about the convicts and prisoners that once lived there. Our tour guide Janine was amazing and it’s easy to see she really enjoys her job. A good place to spend a few hours if you're in Freemantle. Informative guides take you around the prison. There's also a boat trip you can do in the waterways beneath the prison but this requires climbing down a ladder and so is not suitable for everyone. Well worth a visit.

Fremantle Prison... the name should say it all, built by convicts in the 1800's and closed its doors in the early 90's, this place is unbelievable. The tour guides are amazing and everyone is so helpful. The stories that are shared and the ambiance of the place help to create an amazing experience. I didn't quite know what to expect from the night tours but I really enjoyed it. For those umming and ahhhing over whether they should do a night tour I say do it. It's the darker side of the prison, some confronting stories but all in all a very very good experience.

Amazing experience - got here at 4:30 and there was still time left for a tour. It was the best last minute decision I've made - Brett, the tour guide, gave an incredible tour and performance around the hauntingly beautiful prison full of stories, art, and preserved history. We took the behind bars tour and were by Marnie. Her passion kept us intrigued through the whole tour. A great, in-depth experience at a place in the heart of Fremantle. Rated four stars because it felt like there were parts missing that could have been included such as the lashing post and the death row cells.

Definitely read up on the history before coming here. TBH I didn't know of this place till my Criminology prof mentioned this place for my dissertation. decided to fly there and check it out. It's a prison from the early days when perth was just starting out, and convicts were shipped here from England to form a Penal colony. The prison itself gives glimpses of how life as a convict was back then, and to their psychological state. Displays of lived in cells, toilets and isolation cells, as well as the hangman's noose gives you something to think about. The touristy tour has several versions, the standard tour for casual viewing, and another more hardcore one which shows you the tunnels beneath. Check ahead for promos or changes in schedules.

Fremantle Prison was built on a land grant of about 36 acres (15 ha) from limestone quarried on-site. A 15-foot (4.6 m) tall boundary wall encloses the prison grounds, with a gatehouse in the centre of the western wall, facing The Terrace. Other roads bounding the site are Knutsford Street to the north, Hampton Road to the east, and Fothergill Street to the south.:7 Cottages, which housed prison workers and officials, are located outside the wall either side of the gatehouse. Inside the walls, the parade ground is located east of the gatehouse. Beyond it is the Main Cell Block[3] at the centre of the site, which contains two chapels. North of the main block is New Division, and west of that, in the north-western corner, is the former Women's Prison, previously the cookhouse, bakehouse and laundry. The hospital building stands in the north-eastern corner, while the former workshops are located in the south-eastern corner, as well as to the north of the gatehouse. A system of tunnels, constructed to provide fresh water from an aquifer, runs under the eastern edge of the site. Wikipedia

One of the symbolic architectures in Perth region, Fremantle Prison was in use from kid 19 century to 1991. You need to book a tour to enter the site. The tour was educational, you get to see the cells, workplaces, kitchen end even a room of execution. One of World Heritage list of Australia.

A must visit for both locals and tourists. Has a very interesting history and some great stories

Attended the Convict Prison tour and I must say our guide, Rhonda, is very insightful. She provided us with the history of the prison which made us understand the place alot better. I would recommend not to attend these tours when the weather is hot; it gets warmer in the prison building and some of us couldn't take the heat.

We keep going back because there's a heap of tours to choose from and the cost of the tours is really cheap. Fun, educational, and a great stop off if you're doing Freo. I'd give it 6 stars... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐... and a 👍😉

We did the torchlight tour with Janine who is super knowledgable about the history and empathetic about the lives of prisoners and the prison guards. She’s also super open with questions regarding paranormal activities in the prison and all this just made our time very memorable at Fremantle Prison!

Although a very sad and depressing place in terms of its history, it is a "must see" and worth every penny for a tour.

So much fun the prison night tour. So glad we got a whole bunch of kids on our tour as they made it so much fun. Need hearing aids now. So interesting and to think its only been closed just under 30 years. Tour guides are so young but very good at there jobs. Very good storytelling and would recommend it for all ages. The Artwork on the cells are just awesome.

The torchlight tour was so scary but fun, great guide taught us the history of the prison and the stain of the behaviour happened back then. Just be careful if you have claustrophobia, it was quite dark and half of the times in a closed concrete room, but its worth it visiting.

Went for another tour of the Establishment and was another really nice experience. Did the convict prison and behind bars tours both with different guides both excellent and very knowledgeable, was lucky enough to do the behind bars your by myself with the guide which was good. Can’t wait to do my first tunnel tour there and to do more tours as it’s different every time.

We had a wonderful experience staying in this unique accommodation. We had a good look at the place and learn a lot about the history of the prison. Very clean and lots of common areas to sit around and chat. Great location and easy to access to Fremantle CBD. Friendly and helpful staff, great value for money , would like to come back again.

Did 2 tours this week.one with Ian a very knowledgeable guide who took us on the convict tour. Very informative. Then Matthew took us on the behind bars tour. Very good insight into the prison in more modern times. Highly recommend this place. Also lovely cafe and plenty in the free section to check out. Great place to visit

Really interesting place. Tour guide was very informative. The conditions the convicts lived in were mind boggling. Prison was in use until early 1990s. The cells only had a bucket for a toilet right up til it closed to prisoners. Well worth a visit.

Really interesting place to visit, the tour I did was even better a gaining behind the scenes access and extra information. Ken the guide was incredible. My only issue was it wasn’t long enough, it felt a little rushed and I could have listen to him talk for hours more.

Went on a Saturday morning with a group booking. Prison is located near the Fremantle Markets. We arrived an hour early for 10am tour . There are three different types of Tours , Convict , Behind bars and the Tunnel tour . I did the convict tour costing $20 each. Our guide was very informative and from a history an architecture perspective it was enjoyable tour takes an hour and about the only thing need to keep your mind is there's a lot of steps to walk up. They have package tours and Apparently there's also a night tour if you want to be frightened bye the many unjustly convicted Souls still roaming the halls but I'm just speculating there anyway well worth the visit check it out if you can

We did the behind bars tour. The guide was very enthusiastic and explained the history of the prison very well. It was hard to believe that it was still in use up to 1991. We got to see quite a lot of the prison areas including some dressed cells, the kitchens and the prison gallows. The charge sheets in the women's prison were fascinating. We didn't have time to do any other tours but the earlier history of the transported prisoners would have been interesting. The displays in the courtyard area were very good. I liked the histories of individual prisoners and the objects found during excavations. Cafe was good for coffee (from a nespresso machine but fine) and banana bread after the tour.

Highly recommend going on one or two of the tours. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and added a heap of context to the well maintained heritage listed prison.

This prison has such a rich history that there are 4 different tours which are quite affordable. The prison was founded in the 1850s and built by convict labour and expanded and finally closed November 1991. The tour guides tell the story as if they’ve lived it. We took the early history tour and the tunnels tour and we loved it.

  • 5/5 Zoe J. 6 months ago on Google
Highly recommended to do one of the guided tours to understand the history of the prison. The prison facility can only be accessed on a tour. Only the few galleries outside are free for the public. Our guide, Ken, is very knowledgeable and gave us a detailed overview of its history and some of its infamous criminals
