A great place for a walk and to catch the sunrise for a great photo. Walk down to the beach on the North East side for a great perspective.

Good eye sight of whole city centre. But before we came this car is parked as the gate locked already around 8:30pm the time we arrived. But after our walk 3- 4 cars parked that is locked. which seen on board 06:00am open 10:00pm closed. This is very inconvenience and hoping some improvement in near future.

It's a wonderful location. You get to see the lovely Auckland city skyline. Lovely place to visit with family and children. It's also a historic site with tunnels and plenty of play area for children. The views are stunning both day and night. I usually visit for a picnic on the weekends. If you don't have a vehicle, you can get a ferry from the city to Devonport. Parking 🅿️ facilities available. Toilet 🚻 facilities available. Very clean and we'll maintained. Lovely little town nearby and you get everything from restaurants, grocery stores, museum, library and many more. I recommend you to visit this lovely place if you are in Auckland.

North Head or Maunguika (NZ native Māori name) is located on a hillock with a 360-degree spectacular view including Auckland harbour, Hauraki Gulf and its islands. There are couple of walking tracks too, some of which extend to other tramping tracks in the Devonport area. It has a long history, first with Māori occupation, before the arrival of Europeans. Māori settled on the Devonport peninsula for its rich volcanic soils and rich marine environment. Soon after the settlement of the British, Auckland was established as the capital of the country and in 1840 North Head became the site of the first pilot station, for guiding ships into the Auckland harbour. And also the place was developed as a strategic military location base too, to attack rival forces in a possible enemy attack. It is considered the most significant coastal defense site in New Zealand which span nearly 120 years because of the size and variety of its defense installations. It has a network of accessible old bunkers and tunnels as its legacy which are open to the public to view. The site was protected as part of Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park in 1972 and listed as a Category I historic place in 2001.

Hi guys, A MUST visit with absolutely stunning views. Some of the tunnels and caves are closed and/or under reconstruction but the views are simply stunning. Apart from the views you can find historical military artifacts dating back to WWI & WWII as well as a super cosy beach. This is probably one of the most serene places in Auckland. Check out the picd

A peaceful place to watch the harbor. Locals love it for good reason.

Lovely walk around this fascinating extinct volcano. Great views back to Devonport, Auckland’s harbour and CBD. Guns and tunnels add to it’s interesting history.

A fun (and slightly spooky look into wartime Auckland), lots of nooks and crannies to explore, kids will get a kick out of the pitch black tunnels and the artillery, views at the top are staggering. Some parking at the top and public toilets. I’d recommend taking a torch (phone or otherwise), water and sun protection.

Visited here on a free (donation encouraged) History Month tour from Torpedo Bay Museum. Was fascinating to explore the batteries, arms and relics across the reserve, and hear first hand about the setup here and the reasons why the defences were established. Parts of the reserve are windy at times. Great views across the Waitemata to the city and to Rangitoto. The history here is so well preserved and the tunnels and darker areas of the site are generally well kept and not filled with rubbish or other debris as can often occur. Must visit location in Auckland.

Worth a visit if you are in the area as there are great views of the harbor and if Auckland city and you can learn the history of the Navy protecting this cliff area with old tunnels and old cannon mounts.

While on the Auckland north shore visit this elevated site for a great view of Waitemata harbour and Auckland City. Drive up and complete the visit with 20-30 stairs.

Amazing views of the harbour, touching and seeing remnants of ww2 guns, bunkers etc over 100 years old.

Awesome free lookout near Devonport. If you’re visiting Auckland, would recommend as a must see. Tunnels, cannons, they got the lot! Parking on site, short walk up to the lookout. Grass and facilities all maintained very well.

Went early to enjoy day break and the sunrise. Got there just as the gates were being opened at 5:50am. Very tranquil, calm flat seas, peaceful and really enjoyed taking it all in. Peaceful start to the day. Well worth making the effort.

Nice walk, and the view is beautiful. But most importantly the tunnels are so fun to explore.

Awesome historic site. Great views across all directions of the harbour on a good day. Take the family exploring the tunnels or just stroll the path around the point.

Ooo the boy in me will always love old and creepily dark war tunnels and gun emplacements. This tip of Devonport / North Head offers stunning views of the city, water, and Rangitoto for those not willing to venue below the surface. I was quite pleasantly surprised that some of these tunnels literally need a torch if you're not keen to just walk in near total darkness depending on the time of day. Great sunset watching hill too by the way. Definitely worth checking it out as one of the most interesting city hiking areas.

Easy walk from main gate to summit - around 1.3km round trip. Great views of the bay!

What a day for it. The sun was out, the views and a great day. Highly recommend to go here if you have the chance. Lots of history and signs to tell you about it.

Beautiful place to go for a walk or a picnic. Fun exploring the tunnels (with a bit of historical appreciation thrown in). Friends or family visiting Auckland, need to get a tour and the best part is that it's free. Parking can be a challenge on a good day as it's limited, that just means a bit more of a walk from the bottom.

Beautiful view of Rangitoto Island! No blue sky today but I can imagine it being very beautiful when it’s not overcast! The climb up here is not bad. You can drive to the parking lot and walk up the hill!

Old coastal defense with lots of tunnels and old military guns. Cool piece of history and immaculate views of the city and the surrounding harbour. Quite creepy at night though.

I think it should be must visit place and that too free site. It's got a car park and benches to sit and just enjoy the horizon. This place is so beautiful it's a perfect spot for photography and for walk. However, please note that it doesn't have any wheel chair acess or at least I haven't seen that. Multiple spots for photography and the pictures comes out like a wonderful and perfect backdrop pictures. Do take your kids and families or visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery new Zealand can offer.

Love this place on a nice day. I rode there from Birkenhead on… yes an e-bike. Great views of Auckland from the top and great place to take the kids for a walk.

Always a good time to walk around the hill, you will be rewarded with a neat view of the region and beyond! The extra bonus is to walk along the coast, at low tide preferably, to reach a small beach for the love of peacefulness.

This place is amazing! Take a picnic & a blanket cos its getting colder now & enjoy the views & nature

If your visiting mount Victoria i would highly recommend checking out North Head as well. This mountain you can actually drive up to the half walk point so its a bit easier if you don't feel like walking. There is even more defensive equipment on sight here, including the ammunition stores, retractable guns and not to forget stunning views! It does get busy here on the weekends so parking does fill up.

The naval base huge guns are gone so only the base is there. It's only a scenic view now.

👍👍 Great park and dog beach with excellent drink fountain for dog and good toilet facility. A favourite swimming beach with dog in summer, lovely for a walk and ball game in winter. Thanks to 'Blake' (see photo) for installing rubbish bin beside stairway. Great idea.
