Located in Piazza del Duomo, the Fountain of the Elephant is one of the city's most popular destinations. Built in 1736, it features an elephant in lava stone surmounted by an obelisk known as Liotru, the symbol of the city. The Elephant at the center is oddly endearing and the architecture surrounding the square is a delight.

The smiling elephant plaza :P Very nice location, center to all the main locations in this area. Right next to it you have the cathedral and the fish market. Also the tour buses and tour transport right around the corner

Vibrant and lively location with lots going on. Music, cafes and historic buildings. Locals relaxing and chatting away to each other mixed with tourists taking in the sights and sounds. Just a minutes walk from the fish market.

This elephant looks possessed and the square around it looks amazing! Plenty of food options and stuff to see all within 5 minutes of walking

Had an evening for a quick stroll through a bit of Catania. Visited the square/piazza where the fountain lives to find it under renovation, so not in its most attractive state. Still, the pedestrian square was a delight for the eyes. Also, and perhaps strangely, the place lacked the cigarette smoke that we'd grown to expect in most of Italy's outdoor areas where folks gather. Probably a one off but I enjoyed the break. The piazza itself is surrounded by lovely edifices and a fountain tucked into a corner, with a broad pedestrian avenue offering access to relaxed shopping if that's your thing. A nice place.

City is nice and beatiful, has nice old building BUT it is very dirty, there is garbage everywhere. Streets are dirty and it smells very bad. Everything is dirty and not because of vulcano dirt but because it is never cleaned. In small streets there are big amount of garbage, one sofa and a lot of big bags. On the temperature 30-35ยฐC this smell is really bad. It is good to visit city, but I would never recommend it to someone.

You must visit the Fontana and the nearby historical sites if you're in Catania. Not much explanation is provided on site, so you better read about it before you go.

The town was dirty and smelly in a lot of areas, but this was a neat little area. There was a cute little man all dressed up behind the fountain area where the water was. People were taking pictures with him. He reminded me of my late father.

The fountain is indeed nice but the entire piazza is beautiful ๐Ÿ˜ Obviously it's a must visit on your tour of the old part of Catania. Many other places and things to see around there.

4/5 for plazas with elephants. I mean, it has an elephant, and looks whimsical and all, but I really felt it could do more elephant

Great memories with great experience in this world famous landmark in Catania the "Elephant fountain"...the color (black) of the elephant architecture comes from the volcanic ashes of Mount Etna ....worth to remember this trip of us ..

CALLING ALL AMERICANS: If you are from HI, UT, CA, MN, WA, NV, AZ, TX, FL, NY, WV, MT or OR: please visit Italy... you will LOVE it. At some point we are going to have to stay off the jets, and travel through technology: Sicilians are warm hearted friends, that cherish traditional values.

What to say, breathtaking, and not only for the work itself but for the contest, the square, the monuments, the fountain that has its back to the fish market and everything as in a historical bubble that protects it from, the chaos, from the rest of a city prey to haste and unfortunately also to disorder and lack of care for it's incredible heritage. Must see

City with just history is not enough to stay in your heart and remembering. The streets are dirty, smell awful, parks are full of garbage. I feel like just seeing the main buildings and run away. Expected lot more from Silicia! Will not recomend. It is not enough to have a lot of street "restaurants" and to pull people inside, the city energy, preserving what you have matters! People driving with no respecting pedestrians, no rules in traffic.

Probably the main attraction of the Catania in the center. Close is the church, fountain, market and wire a big โ€œumbrella streetโ€.
