Absolutely stunning! First off, the entrance is a bit hard to find, especially if you're navigating via Google Maps. Take the stairs next to the Contemporary museum and head all the way down, it's basically under the bridge, at the bottom of the stairs. Once you've found it, it's a fantastic place! There are over 800 caves under Nottingham, every single one is man-made and had a specific purpose, including the only underground tannery in the UK. The tour is done with a free audio guide that elaborates on all the little details and stories behind the various places you visit, taking about 40 minutes altogether. It's very informative and goes into depth on the history and uses of these caves. A fascinating place, not to be missed!

We visited today 1 adult and two children aged 7 and 11. We had our cave tour with Gareth who was amazing and absolutely full of knowledge! We all really enjoyed it and learnt so much! Gareth was brilliant at delivering information to all ages but also in a fun way…. Not like some boring tours! My boys didn’t stop talking about it on the way home too, comparing it to their lives and how they are glad they didn’t have to root through poo for buttons and teeth! Haha. Thanks again.

Excellent experience. The tour was 45 minutes long and the person conducting the tour was amazing and passionate. We really enjoyed it, though as feedback, i would have really appreciated that he talked a little bit slower, as not being native made it a little difficult to understand. I would suggest not taking small kids.

What an amazing place to visit! Situated 3 minutes walk from The Museum of Justice. Quick introduction from the guide and you make your way underground. Proper footwear and a jumper recommended as it's quite cool down there and the surface is not even. The whole experience was unique and it took about an hour to complete the tour. The guide (Natasha) was awesome and she kept all of us interested and entertained. You learn about city's rich history with a bit of joke and fun on top. Gift shop available at the entrance. Definitely worth visiting while your in Nottingham.

Very interesting place, definitely worth a visit. The tour took us through time and our guide was most interesting. He talked about what each cave might have been used for and the stories behind them. Also try not to be too scared by what you see in there.(PS take good care of your phone)

So much fun. Had zero expectations- a cave is a cave, right? But oh my - these are MAN made and our guide gave us a fantastic (Broadway worthy) tour. It was if we traveled through time. Learned so much. Even my teen managed a smile or two! Tips - get tickets in advance, wear good shoes, don't give up looking for it (please get better signage), and unleash your imagination.

Unique attraction and we definitely learnt a thing or two and heard stories about a place you'd never guess exists right under your feet as you go about your day above. Andy was our guide and made it fun and enjoyable while dispensing much information and knowledge.

Our tour guide Gareth was absolutely amazing and humorous in his explanations. The tour is in depth and easy to follow and you are given the opportunity to explore the route after the tour guide has brought you through the space.

This place is hidden under the tram lines and you need Google maps..but obviously it's down not up! Really cool place..historic..you get given a code to download the audio on your phone as you walk around the caves..very informative. Wear appropriate shoes as can be slippy and remember to dip head! Worth the visit for sure! Tells about when Nottingham was under the 70S precinct and shopping centre..they keep building on top of it!

I ended up enjoying this tour a lot more than expected. Our tour guide was great! Didn't feel like a dull boring tour full of information about the Caves. The price is fair for what it is. I highly recommend doing this tour if you're in town.

Fantastic place to visit and take your children, maybe not to young as it could be a bit scary for youge children, I took my niece and she is 9 and she loved it. The tour guide was excellent and really engaged everyone in the history of the caves. I will definitely recommend and will go again! First time I've ever been and it didn't disappoint.

Awesome place. Sandstone under the city is really awesome. Rich history and a very climatey cool place to relax. Listen to free audio tour brings the caves alive and explains what different areas were used for.

Our tour in the caves was very interesting. Downloading the audio for the tour before starting, allowed us to walk the whole of the caves at our own pace. I would recommend this tour to all visitors

Loved going here it was a little hard to fi down but once you know where you are going it's nice, had to download the audio and have a set of headphones and you have to go on their WiFi as there is not much signal down there, I really enjoyed listening to the audio and listen to the story's behind what is down there I would definitely recommend going here to try if you have not already. I would go again if I was to take someone that wanted to go if they hadn't been already, the audio also tells you to mind your steps and head. I booked this over the phone, you can pay over the phone or on entry.

We have wanted to visit the caves for a while now and we finally did yesterday. Our guided tour led by Nino was about 45 min long and jam packed full of information and history of the amazing caves and how important they were to the city of Nottingham. Highly recommend visiting. One thing is it isn't the easiest place to find. Go down the steps at the side of the art gallery and to the right of the bottom stairs is the entrance. There are also no toilets so you can pop into the art gallery cafe to use theirs before your visit.

The City of Caves is a extremely fascinating place to visit. A little difficult to find to be honest but we'll worth the effort. Our guide Andy was very knowledgeable and humorous. I'd recommend sensible footwear when visiting and it might be a challenge if you have mobility issues. Only criticism the tour wasn't that long in my opinion but, still a great place to visit. Definitely recommend.

The tour was made very interesting by our tour guide Gareth that was amazing and absolutely made the tour for us. He was very engaging, knowledgeable and entertaining giving us the history on the Caves. The tour was a bit shorter than I thought it would be, but overall a pleasant experience.

Absolutely great experience for my 6 and 11yo kids who enjoyed the walk and guide! Pretty informative and amazing to see history of the caves, what they have been used for and for how long, how many are there …. well how many were discovered until now. Walk took around 45 min.

We did the audio tour, and found it to be an interesting experience. It’s a pretty easy walk through the caves, though occasionally low ceilings. I thought it may be a little claustrophobic, but was personally fine. It goes through the history of the caves, and how it’s been used over time - such as pub cellars, personal storage, a tannery, and World War II air raid shelter. The audio tour is 40 minutes, and pretty good though we skipped through a little bit of it. It is one long audio clip via a website (which you can access off their wifi when getting tickets), so instead of numbers whilst in the cave, it will show you the audio time, like “17:21”. I felt it was a little expensive for what it was, but you can purchase a combination ticket with the National Justice Museum - just note that these are about a 3-4 minute walk and many stairs apart.

Really interesting and great value for money. Reminded me of the catacombs in Paris. Free audio guide to listen to an be indulged with interesting information. It blows the mind to think some of the caves date back to 1300. Reassuring to know if we're ever attacked, we can take shelter within the caves

A fascinating insight into Nottingham's past and how these caves have been used for the local population throughout history. Due to covid could not get the fully guided tour, hence 4 not 5 stars.

Visited the caves today, not exactly easy to find if you don’t know the area. Did seem a bit disorganised on entry, especially the suggestion to download the audio tour (we were expecting a guide) I don’t think we were the only ones a bit unsure of the correct route around the caves, as it’s not very clear. I think we were way ahead of the audio tour, as I was the only one in our four who had it. Caves were interesting and it was a fun way to spend an hour, just slightly let down by the above things.

Not your average family excursion! This guided tour showed the underground history of Nottingham from the Roman period to modern times. Tours were a bit crowded and rushed towards the end, great for school-aged children and older. You can purchase your ticket online, at the entrance or at the museum of justice.

Excellent greeting, very interesting story, just the right amount of information and time (40 mins). Audio guide downloads to your phone, ok on speaker if it's quiet, but earphones would cut out other users nearby. Well worth a visit, reasonably priced too. No tacky gift shop either !

We had a great time, went with our 1.5 year old. The walking distance is not long, the stories and facts are great and super interesting. A hidden world you don't know about. Our tour guide (Jade?/Jessie?) was fantastic! Super passionate, fun and patient, thoughtful and kind with our noisy toddler.

My mate and I were planning on doing a self tour, but they offered a guided tour at the time we arrived (which was priced well). The tour itself lasted approximately one hour and our tour guide was bubbly and had terrible but funny [dad] jokes while touring. Loved her personality! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was pretty neat and lots of interesting history behind the caves. Also in close proximity to the various stores and restaurants in the area.

Big shout out for Gareth, Nordic warrior meets giant hobbit. His knowledge and enthusiasm given, on this city of caves tour just makes it come to life. Tour lasts about 45mins, sturdy footwear and the ability to bend down will help. Explore the labyrinth of underground caves, there historic value to the city of Nottingham. Good value for money, book on line, you can chose a time slot. Combine it with the National justice museum for a discounted price. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, and no toilets at this sight. 10 minute walk from Broadmarsh bus station and car park.

We went as a couple. Having lived in Nottinghamshire for 17 years I’m ashamed to say I’ve never been. It was brilliant. We did the guided tour with Jessie, who was very passionate & engaging. Loved it and learnt loads. Thank you

Amazing tour, went there with my fiancé mid week, we only had to wait 5mins for the next tour to start. Lovely lady at the reception, great customer service. Andy was our guide, very knowledgeable and full of humour, absolutely loved every single bit of it. Consider wearing a jacket of some sort as it can be a bit chilly down there 🙂

  • 5/5 Dan A. 7 months ago on Google
Very informative guided tour to the caves under Nottingham. Lasts about 45-50 mins. Really eye opening. Guide was great and the book in was quick also.

  • 5/5 Ashley L. 7 months ago on Google
A fantastic hidden gem. If you visit the National Justice Museum, you can do both on a joint ticket. We had Natasha as our guide and she was fun and knowledgeable telling us about the history of the cave, there use as cellars, beer stores, ice rooms, tannery and air raid shelters. You can also see remains of past buildings hidden under the streets of Nottingham. Few steps and uneven floors as well as low bits but you are warned. Little shop, no toilets

Historic evidence of the way nature was used at the best. The strange thing to experience here is the cave temperature which remains unaffected by the outside weather. Special thanks to the guide Mr.Andy for giving a detailed knowledge on the way the caves were built and have used through ages.

Hidden under a bridge near the Bus Station, spent around an hour. Unfortunately no guided tour but an audio tour downloaded onto your phone instead. Helpful staff. No suitable for disabled due to the nature of the caves. Good place to go if you like local history.

Fascinating and reasonably priced little tour around the caves beneath Nottingham. Really in depth and offers a glimpse into the lives lead down there. Would absolutely recommend checking out if you're in town! Was just under £10 for an adult if I remember correctly.

Great tour with lots of interacting details about different topics that I could not imagine. From leather tanners to beer brewers and WWI details. A must for any Nottingham visitor.

  • 5/5 Marian B. 8 months ago on Google
Absolutely fascinating, great experience, easy to download WiFi and audio tour. I had difficulty finding the entrance.. needs a sign on the road where the footpath ends, to walk down the stairs... after the Nottingham Contemporary.

  • 3/5 norman b. 10 months ago on Google
The first problem was finding the place as there was no signage on the road above. When I found it the was a sign saying it was booked for the day, undaunted I went in and there was a few places left. The caves were unspectacular as they were manmade. The guide was good but spoke at us and not to us.

  • 5/5 Zen C. 10 months ago on Google
After searching for a long time, I found that the entrance is hidden next to the bottom of the stairs! It's so hard to find! Basically as long as the opening hours can buy tickets Guided tours are available every half hour If you miss it, you won't have to wait too long The whole itinerary will introduce the life of former nottingham residents The nottingham people have been very fond of building caves for different purposes since ancient times These caves have their history and function before and after World War II It used to be a dyeing yard, a residence, and a brewery An interesting introduction by your guide You will have a deeper understanding of nottingham At the same time, you can also imagine how people lived in the Middle Ages The itinerary is very interesting! Recommended to visit!

  • 5/5 Joseph M. 1 year ago on Google
Some signage would help in locating the entrance especially on the main road above the caves. I would recommend downloading the audio (40 min long) as WiFi is unreliable. Floor is uneven so wearing appropriate shoes is vital. The caves are well ventilated but a little stuffy which is expected like the volcanic ones of Mt Etna in Sicily. They'll take you back to 1600 all the way to their use in WW1 up to when Nottingham was under the 70s precinct and show you how life was and how people made a living from the leather tannery, political meetings, shopping centre, etc

  • 4/5 Pete P. 10 months ago on Google
My wife and I had the pleasure of taking the tour and the gentleman showing our group around was informative as well as very funny. All the staff were polite and helpful and I'd recommend visiting and seeing for yourself. Very interesting.

Great museum to see. You learn alot about Nottingham how everyone live in the caves when we were cavemen! You will need to book in advance by a few days if you want to plan the city of caves and the national justice museum in the same day for the time slot you require.

  • 5/5 Ned H. 2 years ago on Google
Very informative, interesting history. Should note that guided tours are not taking place due to Coronavirus. They have however created a very well paced audio tour using your mobile device that contains plenty of information, so make sure to bring a phone or tablet. You temporarily connect to their WiFi network and stream their audio guide from the website.

The City of Cave is a great place for kids and people who love historical places. It is an underground location. There will be a tour guide for someone who explained in the history of the cave. You should find a car park yourself, because there is no car parking. You can pre-book online. It is recommended for kids.

  • 5/5 Lori W. 1 year ago on Google
This is a good tour we took 3 kids aged 6,8,13 and they loved it, very engaging. Gareth rhe tour guide was really knowledgeable and funny. We have taken other kids over the years and it's still as good. There is a small gift shop.

Awesome piece of preserved history, showing through the years of different uses for man made sandstone caves in Nottingham. Entry is under the tram bridge underpass, bottom of the stairs near the contemporary gallery. Given QR codes to access both wi fi and an audio tour, so was nice to do at your own pace! Visited on a September weekday and ha the place more or less to myself!

  • 5/5 Dr Jesica Mac L. 2 years ago on Google
Super friendly and nice people, well guided tours with audio guides, it is better to book online. The full visit takes 40 min, interesting historical facts across 1000 years

Great experience. Our tour guide (don't remember the name but he speaks 37 languages fluently!!) was really good and engaging. And the caves are really interesting to see. 100% recommend!!

I personally had a great time in the caves. I looked at and read how people hidden underground have found a way to survive. It was an extremely interesting experience for me.
