I was visiting Matlock today and was lucky enough to see their green steam train. There were a few rail enthusiasts taking photos and here are mine 🙂 Ps I have added a couple of photos taken on 10th March 2023!.... On 15th October 2023 we were delighted to see 'Cathryn' the red engine. I have posted the photos she looked fabulous!

Thank you for a wonderful family day out on your Return to Steam experience yesterday. It was a belated birthday celebration for my husband and all the family including our little grandchildren, we all really enjoyed it. Sanitizing for Covid was expertly done; we felt really safe, thank you all the staff, you all worked hard to make the day special. Thoroughly recommend it,.

Went on train as part of coach trip. Train pulled by a rusty old tender not even a proper engine. Very Jerky ride, was supposed to be an hours journey so we were looking forward to seeing some lovely scenery. Train spent more time standing still on the tracks rather than travelling on them. Very disappointed

Treated my dad for his 80th birthday to afternoon tea on The Palantine. What a superb afternoon. The station was really well kept with very friendly staff. Run by volunteers it was brilliant. Excellent communication when booking and the food - what can I say, it was delicious. We had a great time and I would definitely recommend it.

We were staying in a nearby hotel and heard the chuff chuff chuff of a steam train which drew us like a magnet. Run by knowledgeable, helpful volunteers this is a chance to visit a bygone era. Please go and take a trip and support these volunteers who do such a wonderful job preserving these iconic steam trains of our heritage.

Just returned from a trip out on the Santa Special. What a great time we had. All staff were great and they went to great lengths to please all the children. Well done to all and thank you for making it such a special time.

Great little railway through the peaks. There are three stations linked with a walking path and pubs en route so you can take the train one way and walk back (6 miles)

Enjoyed our trip here, nice little railway. Staff were helpful and friendly. Nice to see the old ways of railway, being preserved, when journeys on rail were fun and exciting. Would recommend and return.

Arrived in Matlock on the x17 bus from Sheffield, a bridge was out so took another bus to Darley Dale to meet the train there. Steam on one end, the ever reliable D8 on the other. Slow and steady for 2 and a half round trips. Photos taken, a look around Rowsley and left 3 hours later. Fine trip.

No train's again this year, how disappointing. Here's hoping I'll be third time lucky🤞 next September.

Just to say how enjoyable my 'Steam train footplate experience' was yesterday (9th July), I thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff were very helpful, my two footplate tutors showed me what to do, and with the controls in my hands, away we went, chuffing up the line on Dunlop the Tank Engine, although it was a hot day in a hot place, it was well worth it. I would encourage anyone with an interest in steam to get yourself to Peak Rail Rowsley south station.

Arrived at Matlock, as per the signs for Peak rail. Paid the ringo parking app, which was £3.80 despite Sundays being signed as £2.50. Pay machine broken so had to use app. Followed signs from Peak rail office, across to the other platform, which is a good 300 yard walk, along with our 2 bulldogs. Only to find a padlocked gate and a notice saying to "walk " to matlock Riverside, which is a hell of a journey. Ended up getting back in the car as our dogs were exhausted. Drove away very unhappy. Why didn't the staff put this information on the main office at matlock platform 1, rather than sending us on a wild goose chase to sainsbury in order to find this out? Ridiculous situation. So needless to say we won't be coming back and giving Peak £30 for the inconvenience.

Beware of the website! Clearly states 'back in steam' running from September. I checked information before traveling, including the calendar. Nothing to suggest it wasn't running on the day we selected. Decided to travel from Matlock. Car park directly next to the station. My husband run in to ask about train tickets but there wasn't anyone around to ask. However, there were many people on the platform so we paid for all day parking and headed for the platform. We couldn't work out how to get over to platform 2, so asked some other passengers, who we're picking up a train from platform 1. They said the steam train wasn't running anymore. Then another couple joined in saying they were looking for the steam train too, as the website said it was running. We both double checked the website and didn't see anything to suggest it wasn't running. We found our way over to the entrance to platform 2 (by Sainsbury's) and the gate was locked! There was a poorly printed sign on the gate saying the train only run on select days. Nowhere was this shown on the website. I then called Peak Rail and the phone rang off. I checked the website later and still couldn't find any information about select days they run. However, today after being promoted by Google to review Peak Rail I thought I'd look again and low and behold, they've added information of when they run (screen shots attached). If only this was on there a few days ago. No information at the station at all. Poor. A further note to those who purchase a transferable all day parking ticket, it can only be used at Matlock station and the agricultural centre car park in Bakewell. Nowhere else.
