Delicious Ethiopian food at an extremely affordable price, cannot recommend it enough! As the name suggests, it is family owned, which contributes to the place’s homely feeling. This was my first time trying Ethiopian food, the waiter guided us through it and absolutely loved everything we tried - especially recommend the mixed meat dish, ideal for sharing.

One of my top 5 meals out, ever! The food was incredible -- so flavorful and authentic. I LOVED the Injera bread and the style of eating! The staff was kind and helpful - the owner even came over to speak with us and speak to our baby. This is a DC gem! 10/10! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I loved this place. Research had shown us that the Ethiopian food scene in Washington D.C. was very highly rated, so we decided to give this small restaurant a try for our dinner after exploring the city all day. We were not disappointed! We started with two glasses of Ethiopian honey wine (Tej) which was absolutely Delicious. For appetizers, we each had our own sambusa. Also delicious. And then, for the main event, we split the family meat and vegetables plate, which featured a selection of nearly all the dishes on the menu, including lamb, beef, collard greens, green beans and carrots, lentils, split peas, and a small fresh salad. The injera (the flatbread upon which all the different foods are served) was also delicious. The family platter came with two baskets of four rolls of injera each, which unroll into quite a lot. I have no complaints whatsoever. All the food was incredible, and the service was very good. The restaurant was very small and we had to wait a couple minutes to be seated, but it is well worth the wait. Also, there was only one server, but she was very friendly and did a good job. I highly recommend this place for anyone interested in Ethiopian cuisine! And I will be happy to return anytime I'm in the Capital.

Absolutely incredible. A great diversity of sauces, proteins, vegetables, and flavors. The injera (lightly fermented flatbread) has a nice slight sour taste reminiscent of sourdough, but great porosity for soaking up sauces. Best enjoyed shared with 3+ people, it is a lot!

The food is AMAZING, and the server was so helpful and friendly!! I'd only had Ethiopian once before, so I'm new to it. The combo options make sampling several dishes very easy, and they're a great deal at $10-15 per person. Everything was delicious and super filling. I will definitely be visiting again! 10/10

An absolutely fabulous dining experience. The food was so tasty and the service was exceptional. The staff and owner came by regularly to make sure we were well attended to. We felt the portion and prices were very good for the D.C. area. I recommend the veggie and meat sharable platter. Make sure to leave room for some of the mesmerizing Ethiopian coffee.

This restaurant was a new experience for sure. One thing that I want to commend this restaurant one is their prices—for a Michelin star restaurant based in Washington DC, if you are on a budget this is the restaurant to go to, ESPECIALLY if you are vegetarian. Their selections are great, and if you are vegetarian, you have lots of choices and can spend about $18 on 2-3 people. We ordered a vegetarian platter and a side of chicken (doro watt) and it was excellent. There is an amazing balance of sweetness with spice— a sign of a truly seasoned dish in my opinion is a dish that can have spices without actually being spicy. This restaurant emulated that perfectly. If you do order meat though, I will admit the price does begin to increase rapidly. This is a true family style restaurant though because you will share with people at your table. You get one massive platter of food and from there everyone can take bites. You get unlimited bread—it is fermented so it has tiny holes on the bottom, like a sponge. It is amazing in that it is incredibly airy and positively melts in your mouth. Overall, this restaurant is a recommendation, not only for its price, but for its amazing atmosphere and incredible food.

We ordered Family Meat & Veggie Special (with a choice of 4 veggies dishes). This cost us $52. Food was good but the portion is very small for the price. There were only 2 tables busy but we still had to wait 45 minutes for the food.

The food here is amazing. We ordered an all-meat platter (which also had veggies). Quantity was more than enough for two. Staff behaviour is also good. Price is reasonable

Hands. Down. Best. Ethiopian. Food. Ever! Food is aromatic and will make you salivate upon entry! It was such a pleasure to be served by the talented Chef Seferash! She was extremely hospitable and kind, despite being short-staffed. If you’re in DC, you MUST visit this place! We ordered the Family Meat & Veggie Combo, Veggie Spring Rolls, and Fosolia. Stop by and see what you’re missing!

This is a family owned authentic Ethiopian restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious and full of flavor. We ordered the family meat special that comes with multiple dishes of chicken, beef, goat, cabbage, lentils, and chickpeas. All of the items were mind-blowingly delicious at a reasonable price. The ambiance was great and people were really nice. Ask for the spice tea, it's great. Also plenty of street parking nearby if you are traveling by car. Would come back again.

A great place to come for fish. I recommend their delicious Asa Tibs/Fried Catfish, but their Derek Tibs (beef) are also amazing. Compared to other Ethiopian restaurants, their food is on the pricier side and their service is a little slow, but they do have good flavor. The website was down when we visited, and I really wish they could have provided more up-to-date paper menus or told us about new dishes/combos that were added to the menu. Our server was not helpful at all in letting us know about what options were available and had us order individual meat dishes. Note that the portion sizes are really large and that each dish can be shared with multiple people!

First time having Ethiopian food and it was lovely. The platters offer lots of flavor options and encourage lots of sharing. Eating a meal like this entirely with your hands is something I'm not too used to, but it was a great experience.

They changed my entire perception on Ethiopian food within a few bites. Absolutely fantastic and delicious! Mom and daughter owned restaurant, both of whom are kind, funny, and have so much pride in what they are serving you. Looking forward to coming here when I’m in town again.

First time eating Ethiopian food, and it was amazing! The service was excellent, very nice and kind. We got the meet sampler plate, and everything was delicioso. She even added lentils even though it was all meet platter:) The honey wine and the coffee... 100! Would recommend 👌🏽

I found the food great! As a deprived from Ethiopian food, food lover... it hit the spot. The service I experienced was excellent. I'd say give it a try as the price is good! 3 of us ate the meat veg combo and we have left overs.

If you are looking for the feeling of home-cooked, family style, then this is the spot. I stumbled into this place on a recent trip and filled my belly on some yummy spiced foods. You can't go wrong with any veggie options. While the meat is not the highest quality, the spices and sauce make for a tasty treat. Be prepared, if the place gets crowded, you may be expected to share your table. But then again, that's what you'd expect with family.

Great food, lots of veg options, very flavorful and affordable! Highly recommend the missir wot and shiro wot. The injera is so soft. We got the family vegetarian combo with an additional order of missir wot and it was a good amount of food for 4 people. If you like spice, ask for the Mitamita powder on the side!

We ordered a platter for two. Tasty and full of various spices. Liked their dining room as it reminded me my trips to Addis.

Absolutely delicious food! Loved everything we had. Service was slow but I think there was only one person working in the front which is completely understandable. In that case. One person can only do so much. They had Ethiopian music playing and the restaurant was decorated Lovely. If we are ever back in Washington, we will definitely visit again.

During vacation weekend, the need to explore new cuisine was strong. After reading Family Ethiopian's menu, I knew the food was going to be phenomenal. On Sunday we came to the restaurant with a party of four. At first, we were afraid that Family was closed, but were delighted to see the owner walking up to the door. When coming to Family Ethiopian, you're not just at a restaurant but a home. The dining room was comfortable and cozy. When the dishes come to the table, our eyes widened. For one, you don't eat Kik Alitcha or Diffen Missir Wot with silverware. Instead, you use injera bread to scoop the dish. The Ethiopian bread is absolutely delicious! There's a pleasant, spongy texture followed by a tangy taste. The combination of flavors between the injera bread and Kik Alitcha are delightful. On another note, most of their dishes are vegetarian. Kik Alitcha has a base of yellow split peas. As the menu suggests, the dish is simmered in mild sauce of onion, olive oil, turmeric, garlic, ginger, and green peppers. I highly enjoyed eating Kik Alitcha and wish there was an Ethiopian restaurant near home! The dish is extremely healthy and filling. As for the Diffen Missir Wot, I was given great reviews of that dish. The Diffen Missir Wot has a lentil base with a combination of onion, tomato, garlic, ginger and turmeric sauce and a blend of traditional spices. Definitely, a dish to think of in a future visit. Additionally, their Jebena coffee is unlike any brew you may have tasted. The coffee is served with an aromatic incense that expands the flavor. There's a rich, acidic taste that makes Jebena a bold brew. Overall, Family Ethiopian is a restaurant that will remain on our list of places to go. It's not everyday you can go to a restaurant and feel like your eating as a guest at someone's home! If you're an adventurous eater, then I highly recommend giving yourself the chance to enjoy great and healthy food!

Had a lot of Ethiopian food in a lot of different cities in the US. This is one with the best. Food is rich w flavor, if you don’t like Family Ethiopian, you don’t like this cuisine! Get whatever you like, it won’t matter, all the dishes were delicious. Sit back and enjoy a meal and a conversation with those you came with, this is what food was meant to be.

first time trying Ethiopian food and the servers were so nice, willing to explain the menu and give recommendations. Got the meat and veggie family platter and it was so good, it is also super affordable. Will definitely return to try other menu items!

First time eating Ethiopian cuisine. My daughter and I love the food. The red spicy chicken reminds me of Indonesian chicken rendang. The beef cube was flavorful. The vegetables were all tasty. They remind me of Indian vegetables. Awesome dark coffee served with smoky incense burnt on a hot coal instead of candle. Great experience!

Myself and one other person shared the Family Meat and Veggies Special. It came with 4 meat items (pre-set) and 4 veggies options of your choosing. It could definitely feed 3-4 people. One of the meat items had lamb which we don't like, but we were able to substitute in another veggie option. Everything was delicious! Once we ordered, the food came out quickly. We also ordered hot tea after the meal. The service was great. The servers were super friendly and attentive without being overbearing. All of the seating is inside. It's a smaller place, but they do a great job of getting people in as quickly as possible without rushing those who are there.

Their platters are large enough to feed 2-3 persons so if you're with someone, I would recommend you order that to sample what's available. The restaurant is family owned and they make you feel at home. The server asked patrons in the restaurant if they had Ethiopian food before which I thought was a nice gesture to help guests try new foods. The food itself was delicious, definitely a fan of the injera bread (slightly sour and fluffy bread as it is a fermented food). Would revisit this place in the future.

We ordered takeout of the Family Meat and Veggie Sampler tonight to eat in our hotel room. It was amazing! The flavors of each of the many dishes were distinct and we couldn’t determine which one we loved the best. The injira was spongy and flavorful. So good! Can’t wait to come back to town and order again.
