The
bust
of
Ludvik
Zamenhof
was
installed
in
1959
in
the
courtyard
of
house
No.
3
on
Deribasovskaya
Street,
where
the
Esperantist
sculptor
Nikolai
Vasilyevich
Bazhenov
(the
author
of
the
bust
of
L.
Zamenhof)
lived.
This
is
the
world's
first
(and
so
far
only)
monument
to
the
creator
of
the
Esperanto
language.
In
those
years,
it
was
not
customary
to
install
sculptural
images
of
real
people
in
courtyards,
especially
since
the
Esperanto
language
was
actually
outlawed.
Therefore,
as
Odessa
legends
say,
Bazhenov
told
employees
of
certain
services
that
the
plaster
sculpture
was
an
image
of
his
father;
It
was
placed
on
the
lid
of
an
old
well
so
that
an
accident
would
not
occur:
the
ubiquitous
boys
could
get
into
the
well
and
fall...
Soon
everything
became
clear,
but
times
have
already
changed.
Enthusiasts
periodically
restored
the
monument,
because
gypsum
is
a
fragile
material.
