A nice piece of history. I enjoyed walking around the buildings and grounds. The staff are great and do a good job showing how things were. It is humbling to see what these men went through for our freedoms. It is also great that the Cantonment is literally at the National Purple Heart museum. So you can park and check out two great museums at once.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed our visit. The staff were in full costume and were great at sharing lots of historical information. A couple of our favorite things were watching the blacksmith make a nail that we got to keep, and seeing a guy fire a musket.

Part of the rich Revolutionary War history in Newburgh, combine a trip here with a trip to Washington's HQ and Knotts homestead for an enjoyable teaching experience for your kids or visitors. You can really appreciate the hardship faced by soldiers in the winter. If you have time, visit the nearby Purple Heart Museum.

The adjacent Purple Heart Museum is closed Mondays, so I toured the grounds of the Cantonment.

Amazing staff in extremely accurate costumes. They will do 18th century blacksmithing, cooking, and medical demonstrations plus musket firings and occasional cannon firings. Plus it's FREE! Beautiful, secluded grounds away from the main road with walking paths. A few good exhibits in the visitor's center on everyday life during the Revolutionary War and artillery. They are colocated with the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, which is also free and has a wonderful exhibit and documentary film. Strongly recommended. Be sure to check out their events. The Memorial Day event is especially moving.

Though they were closed for the season, I can't wait to come back and experience all that is here. History relived! 1776 by David McCullough helped me to truly appreciate what these folks were fighting for. What sacred ground.. .
