Quite simply the best restaurant for traditional fish and chips. Everything about this plaice (😉) is excellent!

I superb hot and cooked to order Cod and Chips. The batter is light and crisp and fish hot and tasty. The chips were great too. Be warned they do not take contactless payment, this is clearly stated on the door as you enter. Service from all the waiting staff was super friendly and fast. I found it noisy on Friday evening as it was busy, but don't let that put you off.

I'm a long term customer, and McDermotts is brilliant everytime! A well established independent business with a strong local reputation, and an important presence in the local community. Customers are always greeted and assisted by the same team of friendly & helpful ladies behind the counter. Along with the kitchen staff, the staffing team are always very efficient and service is prompt. The whole venue and kitchen is always exceptionally clean. They have worked hard to ensure prices remain reasonable despite cost increases. The quality of the food is always great and exceptional. Please be aware that this estalishment is closed on certain days, and generally opening hours are earlier in the evening. This venue has a corresponding restaurant attached operating it the evening alongside the takeaway. They also offer takeway Lunchtime specials on busier days. They accept card payments with a minunim spend of £10. However, there is also a free cash point immediately next door at the Co-Op supermarket if needed. There is plentiful free parking at all times of the day immediately outside. I look forward to returning again soon.

BEST fish & chips in the area. Very quick service and friendly staff. All freshly prepared and they usually run out of fish as they are soooo popular. Ample seating indoors and parking onsite too. We had cod & chips - generous portions.

Embarrassing and has gone down hill. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a fish and chip take away for dinner. My husband went to order and after receiving the order he originally thought they'd forgotten the chips because of the size of the bag. No, there was a small amount of chips underneath, no where near enough to justify the price, or even serve as a portion. He then decided to add a large chips to the order to make up the chips. These were then put into a small bag, weighed (embarrassing) then a few chips were taken out, these were £3.50. What a rip off. We used to come here often for the great quality and portion size but haven't been in a few years after moving. The first clue should have been that there was nobody else in the shop. There used to be queue at opening time. The picture with the sausage was the 'large chips'. Way overpriced, avoid the disappointment

Only had cod or scampi available on menu ,cod was small and very oily leaving oily taste in mouth afterwards,sticky toffee pud was ok ,looked like they had got it from co-op next door , would rather go to my local shop more choice and better quality

Been getting our fish and chips here for years. Quality product and shop offers sit down as well as takeaway. Restaurant staff are attentive and helpful. It is so rare to see a fish and chip restaurant nowadays. This is one of the best!

We are currently on vacation and because of a trip to the town, we decided to eat in in this cute restaurant. Before we've eaten fish and chips pretty often but this fish and chips probably was one of the best we've ever eaten. Everything was fresh, starting from the fish to the chips and also the potato mash with peas and the salad. Even with a housemade dressing, same as the tartar sauce. We really only can recommend this place especially because of the food but also because of the amazing waitress we had. The next time we visit London we will for sure eat in again.

Simply the best fish and chips for miles around! Fresh, tasty fish in a delicate (non-greasy) batter, perfectly cooked chips. Service was brilliant: friendly, helpful, attentive and efficient. Definitely go there but make sure you get there early as it is VERY popular!

Wow! This Fish & Chip ship never fails to deliver. McDermott’s is now my only go to for delicious fish & chips. I sat in this time & the restaurant accommodates over 100 people I’d say. Plus they serve alcohol with your meal should you wish to indulge. Winner all round.

It’s 2022 and as I have mentioned before, this business STILL does not take contactless payment. FYI minimum card payment is £10 but with cod & chips costing £12 currently that rule is fairly easy to follow. Banks charge a business way more for processing cash than card/contactless so I don’t understand their logic at all.

I'm relatively new to the area, having moved here just over 6 months ago. I read all the reviews about McDermott's Fish & Chips as it's my local shop and I must say it surpassed my expectations. The chips are combination of soft and crunchy, always fresh and no old oil used as is the same for the fish which is I believe is always sustainable and the special or fish of the day is what was available at the fish market I presume. Always a queue but it goes down fairly quick. I wish the opening days and hours were extended as the opening hours are not your standard chip shop hours but I suppose it creates demand.

This is a top fish & chip shop however on this one off visit the cod & chips were not up to their usual high standard

If you buy fish and chips elsewhere , be prepared to throw most of it away...... Mcdermotts is the place to get quality fish and chips every day,every month, every season....expectations meet.

An excellent place to sit down and eat. Superb service, Loads of parking get there early as it gets very busy. By far the best fish and chips on planet earth. Chip portions should be bigger, a chip shop worth travelling too.

Food is excellent, Service is excellent. Cleanliness is excellent. The portion size and price is not excellent. £15.80 for an adult size cod and chips, then another £1.80 for mushy peas. Best part of £20 quid for a chippy dinner. It is rather steep in my opinion. Add in a drink and a dessert and you're not far off £80 for a family of 4 for dinner. Definitely not a place to visit on the regular.

This has been my favourite fish and chips for many years, plus amazing quality control, 100% satisfaction on every visits, they never disappoint me. From the photos, their chips might look pale and under cooked to some people, but they are perfectly cooked, try it once at least, you can tell they are different from the others. McDermott really know how to make the best fish and chips.

Very good fish and chips light crispy batter soft fresh flaky fish decent portion size chips crispy fluffy and not greasy. Very busy from opening until closing but fast streamlined service in and out in under five minutes prices on the higher side but fair and not overpriced considering - personally I drive just over 3 miles and past 3 other fish and chip shops to specifically come here - wish they open another branch or two locally

This is a great place to get your fish and chips fix. The service was very quick, seeing as it was a Friday. I had plaice and it was very nice, the batter was perfect. The chips were also good, crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside and they weren't oily; you could tell that they change the oil regularly. Definitely will be back soon😊

The first time we came here in October 2022, it was probably the best cod and chips I've ever had. Absolutely perfect fish, light crunchy batter and wonderfully cooked, and the chips were amazing. The staff were so friendly and helpful too, and the restaurant is very neat and clean. We visited again today and it was just the same experience. Very impressed!

We went to McDermotts this evening for fish & chips. I had my son with me and after waiting for 30 minutes after ordering, I went to pay only to find out that they do not take contactless, only cash or card. I tried getting cash back & finding a bank account in the area but to no avail. I eventually managed to find enough money in the car for my son’s food but was incredibly frustrated that this was not clearly written on the door and that I was almost left waiting for so long without being able to provide dinner for my son on a Friday evening. Not what a full time working single parent needs on a Friday night. What struck me was that they did not seem to care or try to find a solution. I will not be coming back and do not recommend this place.

The food and service was very good. The ambiance was spoilt by the high noise level of other patrons talking loud even while eating.

Nice fish and chips. Service score lost because of not taking card payments. It's 2023 and people pay using Apple Pay and Google Pay. I do not even carry bank cards with me.

Warm welcome at the door. Seated quickly in a well decorated area. Drinks order taken right away and then the food order. Prices a little steep but the food, service and ambience were excellent so, as they say, you get what you pay for.

Menu prices are about 50% more expensive than advertised on their website an £18 order cost £31 fish was nice but large chips were just a normal sized portion and tasted old way too much money for the quality the same food is around £23 in nearby take away

King of Fish !!!!! Honestly, if you have NEVER eaten at this incredible Fish restaurant, you haven't lived. I have recently eaten at "The Pilot" a reputed Fish restaurant in Dungeness. It just couldn't compare to McDermotts. Like New York, they should re-name it twice !!!!!

Delicious fish and chips with baguettes, gherkins and pickled onions in a side dish. Just as delicious deserts. Friendly helpful staff. A very short wait for the food to be presented and it was hot and fresh.

We drive 30 minutes to get our fish and chips, it is well worth it. We have been coming for about 5 years and it's product is constantly excellent. Give it a try.

Fish and chips simply perfect. I asked for a gluten free battery which is fine for me as I'm intolerant. They are cooked in the same fryer as other products containing gluten and you can only get it in the restaurant. So delicious!

Not sure what's happening with the chip portions these days, this is the second or third time I have hardly had any chips. I love this place but if they do not give a decent amount of chips next time I will go elsewhere. The prices have gone up since lockdown but the portion has got smaller. Sort it out or you will lose custom.

This is the best fish and chips by far however last night was very disappointing the chips have been changed we noticed this as soon as the plate was put down they looked different and tasted different to the point we never ate them when approached by staff we was told they are the new season potatoes ! Which they only use late at night to me they looked like and tested like frozen chips as they was a dry as ever ! The waitress was very apologetic about this and kept apologizing she could not take the cost of the chips off bill as they come with the fish !! Really the management should have come out and addressed the problem we have been going to this fish and chip shop for years along with most of there customers management take note we know what to expect when we order cod and chips you know how to deliver so why would you change what’s working Next time you use something different it’s important you inform you customers as we do know when it’s not the same

Outstanding fish and chips only choice was Cod. Although they had other fish choices on the menu the sound is very loud in the restaurant not a sit and talking venue. Eat and go.

I've been looking for the name of this wonderful restaurant for 6 years (since my trip to England). Finally I noticed the menu from my photo I took, haha! The food was amazing. It was my first time trying fish and chips and I was amazed!!! The fish melted in my mouth. I have never had such fresh fish. And mushy peas were a game changer!! I really hope to come back and bring my husband! And he doesn't even like fish but I know he will enjoy this!

Was recommended to this restaurant. Service was very good staff very attentive and polite. Fish was very good but chips too dry, also my partner she does not eat fish so had pie and chips. Chips also very dry but the pie was horrible, didn't look as though it had been cooked . The pastry was very dry it was hard to cut into and the filling was tasteless and not much of it. She did not want to make a fuss as we were being treated to the for looking after this person when he was I'll. He loves the restaurant, but we wont be going back. They need to sort out catering for vegetarians more.

One of the (if not the) best Fish and chips shops going. Also have a brilliant system for ensuring you don't queue too long for Friday night's treat. Queue looked huge when we arrived but we were back in the car with our order within 10 minutes!

This is definitely the best place for fish and chips. Don't be put off by the queue, they have got service really well organised and you rarely have to wait more than 5 minutes. Would highly recommend

When did their fish and small chips get so big? . .I know it's been a while since I tasted their fantastic yummy offerings,but the fish was still so tasty,the batter crispy and the chips chunky and just how they should be from a decent chippy! . . Your always welcomed with a smile and a pleasant greeting,and each order is cooked fresh whilst you wait. . They also have a restaurant next door,where you can sit and eat in a pleasant friendly atmosphere. . This is a place I highly recommend you try,someone I knew used to come and eat there when they were out and they lived in blackheath!! . . .

A history of delicious fish and chips! BUT What’s happened to the chips in the last 3 weeks?? instead of the lovely tasty, crispy on the outside chips, the last two visits have produced rubbery chips with no flavour and no crispness at all. Please look at your supplier! The haddock and cod were their usual delicious standard.

This really is one of the best fish and chips I have ever had. It really is lovely. The restaurant itself is also very nice. Well worth a visit. I decided to treat myself to fish and chips on a Friday after work. The queues are long but their system is faultless - they definitely know how to run their takeaway. I ordered cod and chips and both were excellent. I personally would have preferred crispier chips which is the usual with them but it was a busy Friday night, so they can be forgiven. I think a weekday fish and chips is probably better than a busy Friday or Saturday night.

Visiting friends in London they suggested fish and chips from a place the other side of Croydon to them. A little bit skeptical that they would survive the trip home we set off and arrived at a very busy establishment. Order placed for three cod and two chips (warned by my host that the chip portions were large). In quick time hot fish and chips were ready and bagged up. We set off at a dash (within the law of course) and arrived home, unpacked our hot delights and tucked in. They were as fresh as when packed and oh my..... Delicious!
